Our problem is the increasing death rate in New Zealand due to speeding accident on the
motorway. These accidents does not only causes financial expenses, but also effecting other
people safety on the road. So we come out with a solution, to make a more accurate and
more efficient speed sensor to prevent speeding to occur.
3. BUSINESS SECTION
3.1 Vision
Our vision is to create the most accurate and efficient technologies to save lifes on the road.
3.2 Industry Analysis: Traffic Speed Sensor Industry.

Buyer power: High Our buyers are most likely to be the countries’
government, insurance company (such as AA in
New Zealand) and police department (New

Supplier power: Low There are many supplier in the industry that is
suitable for our systems, such as Measurement
Specialties, Wavetronix and Stalker(rival).
Threat of new entrants: Low The threat of new entrants will be low because of
the high start up cost and difficulties in signing
agreement with suppliers and traffic law
enforcement.

Threat of substitutes: High There are many substitutes such as roadside
speed cameras, radar speed guns, LIDAR speed
gun and even community speed watch (UK Speed
Camera Types, 2014). Furthermore, there are also
apps for traffic enforcement such as i Speedcam
Australia & New Zealand.
Rivalry among existing
competitors:
High There a fair amount of competitor in the industry
such as Stalker Traffic Speed Sensor by Stalker
Intelligent Technologies and Speedspike by the
UK. Both of these systems has the similar
functionalities to our systems and has been well
established in the industry.
Overall attractiveness of the industry: The industry has high buyer power, because there
are many other company that sell similar product in the market. Additionally, both rivalry
among existing competitors and threat of substitutes are high, because there are more
advanced speed cameras been developed in the traffic industry. Furthermore, there are
many supplier that sell sensor and component in the industry such as Noptel, which sell
sensors that suitable in harsh environment, small in size and able to accurately measure
high speed (Noptel,n.d). Ultimately, it is a fairly attractive industry.
3.3 Customers and Their Needs
Our customer are the countries’ government and traffic law enforcement primarily. They
need a system that is accurate and efficient in capturing high speed drivers on the
motorway. Furthermore, it must be able to accurately record the speed and identify the
drivers that are speeding.
3.4 The Product and Service
Our solution is to place our sensors on the start and end of the motorway. Once the vehicle
pass the starting point the system will start to calculate the time and distance travelled till 3

the vehicle reach the end. The data collected will be transfer to our system for speed
calculation process (by calculating distance/time). In the process of calculation, if the driver
went over the speed limit, the systems will automatically send the information to the law
enforcement and issue a speeding ticket to the driver.
3.5 Suppliers and Partners
Our supplier will be company that produce traffic or speed sensor and also system that are
able to store data and process them. For example, Measurement Specialties that provide
high quality sensor such as the Piezoelectric Traffic Sensors and Fiber Optic Traffic Sensors
(Measurement Specialities, n.d). Also, we would like to partner with the government to get
funding for our business to provide safety measures on motorway.
3.6 Strategy: Focused High Cost.
The Porter’s Generic Strategies that we are using is focused high cost, because this product
is generally for government and law enforcement to prevent speeding. Furthermore, the
cost of installing high-tech sensors and systems on the motorway will be high.
3.7 Value Chain Activity: Procurement
The most important value chain activity for this business is procurement. We need to be
able to get the best equipments and up to date systems with a good price in order to stay
competitive in this industry that focused on technological advance.
3.8 Business Processes:
In business operate process model, the business first need to received order from the customer and take into analysis (with information from past customer feedback on the product) to provide the right product for the customer. Then we will need to make a purchases requisition to buy the inventory needed (with information from ERP system) to make the final product. The inventory will then receive from supplier and take into quality and performance assurance to ensure the right standard. After the inventory has passed the assurance test, it will be deliver to and install for the customer. Furthermore, after customer make payment, any technical difficulties on the product will be cover by the customer help centre. Also, information on the customer feedback and problems will be take into CRM system and used in the next customer order analysis.

In this model, the Market supplier research department is very important in the business
process and related to my value chain activity (procurement). It provide information on
which supplier we should choose in order to stay competitive in price and quality.

3.9 Functionalities
3.9.1. BUSINESS PROCESS 1:
(Inventory Ordering System) Measure the amount of inventory require for customer order and send order to supplier.

(Market Supplier Research Department) Finding the best supplier in the market to gain competitiveness in price and quality.
(Research and development department) To find improvement in the systems and increase efficiency.
3.10 Systems
3.10.1. TRANSACTION PROCESSING SYSTEMS – When the business require a customer order,
it transfer the order into a order processing system (customer need analyses). Additionally,
the business also transfer information of the purchases requisition into inventory ordering
system for restock and order fulfillment.
3.10.2. DECISION SUPPORT SYSTEM – In choosing the supplier, we have information transfer
from the ERP, Research and development department and Market supplier research
department to assist on decision making. This also related to our vision, because we want to
provide accurate and efficient systems and we need the right suppliers.
3.10.3. CUSTOMER RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS – The business take customer
feedback and product problems and store it in the CRM data warehouse. So in future
customer need analyses the business is able to improve their product through those
information from the data warehouse.

CONCLUSION
Ultimately, the business is to provide a product that will reduce the rate of accidents on
motorway by discouraging speeding. The product uses information technology to increase
efficiency and accuratecy, through computer systems to measure the driver speed and
directly tranfer the information to respondent with no delay in between. It is also much
more effective way than using traditional speed camera to prevent speeding accident and
also save lifes.
