From the Rabbi

The Blessings of SpringFrom a certain point of view, Judaism reveals its true beauty when it

helps us to celebrate transitions. Havdallah (the ritual that concludes Shabbat) fills me with a sense of peace and uplift as I look to the week ahead. Similarly, at Passover I feel a new relief as our liturgy shifts from acknowledging the winter winds and rains to blessing the spring-time dew.

As we move deeper into May, our community is celebrating another moment of transition. Shavu’ot (or Shavu’us, as I grew up calling it) con-cludes the omer period – a span of seven weeks beginning at Passover. At the end of counting these 49 days, we gather to remember the giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai. This festival marks our ancestors’ transfor-mation from a loose aggregate of clans to a people. No longer were the people Israelites, connected by the bonds of blood and tradition. Now they became Jews – held in covenant to each other and to their Creator.

This springtime holiday has a special resonance for our temple fam-ily. The festival marks the season when many of our members return to the Berkshires from their winter sojourns. While there’s no official blessing for this occasion, it’s a time of great joy for our community. I feel a special sense of wholeness as I see friends and companions who are returning to our home in the Berkshires.

The confluence of Shavu’ot and the return of our members would have been enough for us (dayeinu!), but there are many more reasons to celebrate this new month. Our Yom Ha-Atzme’ut (Israel Independence Day) festivities are always a beautiful moment for us. Even more, I hope that you will join me in welcoming Tamara Wolfson, our cantorial intern, when she makes her first visit to our community for the Sabbath beginning May 12. Also this month, I invite you to join in our Con-firmation Shabbat as we honor the hard work of our confirmands on Friday, May 19.

With all of these blessings, I look forward to seeing you soon! May this month bring us uplift and expansiveness, the inspiration of com-munity and much joy!

President’s Message

Some of you may have enjoyed the first season of a new television show, This is Us. I find it to be a rather compelling and emotional drama,

which intertwines several story lines. With legacy, love, and family at its core, the show embeds the characters in life 40+ years earlier with the lives of people in the present. That’s all I will say, as I don’t want to be a spoiler and give away the premise or the content. But, I think it is clever; and I am hooked.

How does this show relate in any way to my message to you? Well, I have been finding myself wishing that I could have been around temple, say, 40 years ago. I would have loved to witness the life of our growing congregation at that time. How did people feel about assuming leadership roles? What was the inspiration to become a temple leader? How were we considering our legacy as a way to sustain our future?

‘HOW,’ will be my questions to the pillars of this temple, about a lot of things. Gratefully, I can ask some of these dear people in our temple family; gratefully, I can research a beautiful array of archives. It is time for me again, which has been my hope and desire to do, to widen the query among all in our temple community, so that our past and the circumstances of our ‘now,’ may inform our best leadership. More on this idea next month.

WHY am I wondering a lot about HOW? Well, it is that time again to nominate new leaders to our Board, Management Team and Committees. Actually, we are a month late in this process given some other critical temple needs these days, such as security; such as supporting a congregation that has experienced a

great deal of loss. As I consider that WE, like our

sister congregations across the country, lead and operate with fewer available people to meet all of our essential and desired needs. I have noticed that we are actually realizing our temple leadership model as one that is much more cooperative (leading with people) rather than from a consumer based model (leading to people). And, indeed within the texture of our beautiful worship, study, education, programs and events; even with our Board and Management Team and burgeoning committees and people taking responsibility to oversee and to do a great many things for our temple and our congregation, we require several more people to partner in our leadership efforts. As I have said time and again, given our ever-changing demographics, capacity, and resources - the financial and the human - leadership must now be in the hands of the many, not the few!

So, dear congregation, when members of our Management Team, Board and Nominating Committee ring/buzz your phone to request your place as a leader in the life of this temple, please wholeheartedly consider this as an honor and blessing, and then say,”Hineni - Here I Am!” When you do, you too may act on the legacy of our leaders to care for this congregation for the present and the future of this temple. You will share your talents and best efforts with an amazing group of people, and you too may get hooked! Our leadership must succeed as a lasting tribute to the life of this congregation. After all, for the best part of 150 years, TAA has been, and must continue evermore, to be US! L’Shalom,Debora Cole-DuffyPresident

4 ~ Temple Anshe Amunim ~ May, 2017

Hi, everyone! I’m Tamara Wolfson, a rising fifth-year cantorial student at HUC, and I’m so excited to meet all of you soon!

A little bit about me: I grew up in Scars-dale, NY and attended a Conservative syna-gogue called Temple Israel Center of White Plains where I caught the Jewish music bug. But outside of temple, music was always my first love. I learned to play piano when I was 5, and was singing as soon as I could talk! My grandfather worked with Broadway actors and actresses for a living, so a love of music and performance was in my blood. I was very involved with piano, voice, and theater for as long as I can remember. In fact, I attended a performing arts camp called Belvoir Terrace in Lenox, MA and fell in love with arts in the Berkshires at a young age, too — so this feels a bit like I’m coming home!

Growing up, I was always drawn to Juda-ism through music. It was how I connected to God, to the words in the prayer book, and to my Jewish community. While I was raised Conservative, I discovered Reform Judaism in college and it truly opened up a new world for me! I love merging my two Jewish tradi-tions in every service I lead, bringing together both the ancient and modern to create a mu-sical, meaningful prayer experience. I think it is so important to find a good balance be-tween the old and the new, especially when it comes to Jewish music!

I can’t wait to sing and pray with the in-credible community here at Anshe Amunim and to learn more about the songs, prayers, and experiences that bring you meaning. I’m looking forward to an amazing year!

Seth Rogovoy to Discuss Bob Dylan’s Jewish Influences

Seth Rogovoy, termed “American Jewry’s greatest Dylan scholar” by Religious News Service, will present a multimedia program exploring the Jewish influences in the life and work of a Nobel Prize-winner whose name is familiar to all: “The Kabbalah of Bob Dylan,” at Congregation Knesset Israel (16 Colt Rd.) on Monday, May 22, at 7pm. The event is co-sponsored by Congregation Knesset Israel and Temple Anshe Amunim.

With the aid of audio clips, video, still images, and textual comparisons, Seth Rogovoy, author of Bob Dylan: Prophet Mystic Poet (Scribner, 2009), will illustrate how Bob Dylan’s songwriting has always been profoundly rooted in Jewish writings, including the Torah, the Prophets, the Talmud, and mysticism, fusing these inspirations into a genre of “rock ’n’ roll mi-drash.” Along the way, the program will examine the Minnesota-born folksinger’s deeply religious and cultural upbringing, his commitment to Jewish practice and causes, and his long connection to Chabad.

Seth Rogovoy is a familiar name to Berkshire readers and public radio listeners. For 16 years he was a music critic and arts writer at the Berk-shire Eagle; he was the founding editor of Berkshire Living magazine; and his weekly cultural commentary has been heard on WAMC North-east Public Radio Network for two decades.

Seth is also an expert on klezmer, having penned “The Essential Klezmer: A Music Lover’s Guide to Jewish Roots and Soul Music” (Al-gonquin, 2000), the all-time, best-selling guide to the music. He was awarded the 2016 Simon Rockower Award from the American Jewish Press Association for excellence in arts and criticism for his portrait of musician Leonard Cohen, published in the April/May 2015 issue of Ha-dassah Magazine.

Seth is a contributing editor to the English edition of The Forward, for which he has written for more than 25 years. His work has been published in Haaretz (Israel), Jewish Press (U.K.), Jewish Quarterly (U.K.), Boston Phoenix, and others. He is the programming consultant for the Yiddish Book Center in Amherst, where he curates the annual Yidstock: Festival of New Yiddish Music. Seth’s Friday weekly cultural commentary can be heard on WAMC Northeast Public Radio Network on Midday Magazine. He also publishes daily and weekly newsletters in his online magazine of cultural and critical news and observations, “The Rogovoy Report”.

Guitar players can bring their instruments to “jam” with Seth on Bob Dylan songs at the conclusion of his presentation. Light refreshments and beverages will be served. Seth’s books will be available for purchase after the program.

Tickets are $18 and can be purchased online at www.knessetisrael.org; reserved at Knesset Israel’s main office during business hours; called in with credit card at (413) 445-4872 x. 10; mailed to 16 Colt Road, Pittsfield, MA 01201 with enclosed check made to Knesset Israel.

We have friends in sunny Arizona!Thank you to Bill Gordon, who sent in a generous gift to support PFTY. He writes that, as a former advisor to the youth group, it does his heart good to see that our youth are participating in Temple activities and that PFTY is alive and well! Maximus, aka “Max,” is his therapy dog and they visit a local hospital ever week to put a smile on the patients’ faces. Looking at this photo, we’re smiling too!

Archivist NeededJim Overmyer, one of the original members of the Rabbi

Harold and Audrey Salzmann Archives team, is stepping down from his position of documents archivist as of June 30. One or more individuals are being sought for this part-time work.

The Salzmann Archives contain documents about the worship services, religious school, and administrative and financial aspects of the temple dating back to the 1950s. In addition, the Archives hold nineteenth century minutes books and ledgers from the congregation’s earliest days, including minutes of the congregation’s founding in 1869. The Rhoda and Phil Kaminstein are in charge of an exten-sive photo collection, which includes many pictures of re-ligious school classes and various temple social occasions. Again, there are some photos of the temple’s earlier days.

A large portion of the sorting and cataloging of docu-ments has been done at this point, although the Archives are continually receiving new items. Primary duties for the document archivists are to finish processing the unarchived materials, handle new items, use the resources to assist the temple administration and committees in preparing for events, and help temple members and descendants of past members in tracking family histories. The entire Archives team also assembles periodic historical photo and memo-rabilia displays for the temple lobby.

Interested archivists should contact the temple adminis-tration. Jim Overmyer and the Kaminsteins are available to answer questions.

The Federation Mitzvah Day at Laurel LakeOn Sunday, April 2, Berta Cole, one of many happy Kindred at Lau-rel Lake residents, loved listening to enrico Lamet sing with oper-atic flair, hearing Jorden Senzel skillfully play “Ode to Joy” on the tuba, and being greeted by a long-time temple friend Jane Shiyah with her therapy dog, Inky. Thank you to all the volunteers from our temple family: enrico and Cookie Lamet; Jorden, ethan and Rich-ard Senzel; Helaine Rose and her family; and Deb Cole-Duffy and Jim Duffy for joining all the volunteers with the Jewish Federation of the Berkshires. Special thanks to JFB Volunteer Coordinator, Susan Frisch Lehrer, and Executive Director, Dara Kaufman, and JFB staff and board members for making it all possible! Flower ar-ranging, happy day card making, chatting, visiting with two therapy dogs, enjoying delicious refreshments and music abounded. The experience was truly magical - a mitzvah for the Laurel Lake resi-dents, a mitzvah for all!!
