FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK | Very Rev. André-Joseph LaCasse, O.P.

Twelve Reasons from the Teachings of the

Church: Spending One Hour With Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament

The Monstrance and Tabor Stand of Angels holding up Jesus at the Dominican House of Studies, Washington, D.C.

1. You are greatly needed! “The Church and the world have a great need of Eucharistic Adoration.” Pope St. John Paul II, Dominicae Cenae

2. This is a personal invitation to you from Jesus. “Jesus waits for us in the Sacrament of Love.” Pope St. John Paul II, Dominicae Cenae

3. Jesus is counting on you because the Eucharist is the center of life. “Every member of the Church must be vigilant in seeing that the sacrament of Love shall be at the center of the life of the people of God so that through all the manifestations of worship due Him shall be given back ‘love for love’ and truly become the life of our souls.” Pope St. John Paul II, Redeemer of Man

4. Your hour with Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament will repair for evils of the world and bring about peace on earth. “Let us be generous with our time in going to meet Jesus and ready to make reparation for the great evils of the world. Let your adoration never cease.” Pope St. John Paul II, Dominicae Cenae

5. Day and night Jesus dwells in the Blessed Sacrament because you are the most important person in the world to Him. “Christ is reserved in our churches as the spiritual center of the heart of the community, the universal Church and all humanity, since within the veil of the species, Christ is contained, the Invisible Heart of the Church, the Redeemer of the world, the center of all hearts, by Him all things are and of whom we exist.” Pope Paul VI, Mysterium Fidei.

6. Jesus wants you to do more than to go to Mass on Sunday. “Our communal worship at Mass must go together with our personal worship of Jesus in Eucharistic adoration in order that our love may be complete.” Pope St. John Paul II, Redeemer of Man

7. You grow spiritually with each moment you spend with Jesus! “Our essential commitment in life is to preserve and advance constantly in Eucharistic life and

Eucharistic piety and to grow spiritually in the climate of the Holy Eucharist.” Pope St. John Paul II, Redeemer of Man

8. The best time you spend on earth is with Jesus, your Best Friend, in the Blessed Sacrament. “How great is the value of conversation with Christ in the Blessed Sacrament, for there is nothing more consoling on earth, nothing more efficacious for advancing along the road of holiness!” Pope Paul VI, Mysterium Fidei.

9. Just as you cannot be exposed to the sun without receiving its rays, neither can you come to Jesus exposed in the Blessed Sacrament without receiving the Divine Rays of His Grace, His love, His peace. “Christ is truly the Emmanuel, that is, God with us, day and night. He is in our midst. He dwells with us full of grace and truth, He restores morality, nourishes virtue, consoles the afflicted, strengthens the weak.” Pope Paul VI, Mysterium Fidei.

10. If Jesus were physically visible in church, everyone would run to welcome Him, but He remains hidden in the Sacred Hosts under the appearance of Bread because He is calling us to faith, that we may come to Him in humility. “The Blessed Sacrament is the Living Heart of each of our churches and it is our very sweet duty to honor and adore the Blessed Host, which our eyes see, the Incarnate Word, Who they cannot see.” Pope Paul VI, Credo of the People of God.

11. With Transforming mercy, Jesus makes our heart one with His. “He proposes His own example to those who come to Him, that all may learn to be like Himself, gentle and humble of heart, and to seek not their own interest but those of God.” Pope Paul VI, Mysterium Fidei.

12. If the Pope himself would give you a special invitation to visit him in the Vatican, this honor would be nothing in comparison to the honor and dignity that Jesus Himself bestows upon you with the Invitation of spending one hour with Him in the Blessed Sacrament. “The Divine Eucharist bestows upon the Christian people incomparable dignity.” Pope Paul VI, Mysterium Fidei.

HOLY TEACHING

Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 7, 2019Pope St. John Paul II – Vita Consecrata §64

(The Consecration of Saint Nicholas, Paolo Veronese, Date: 1562)

The mission of the consecrated life, as well as the vitality of Institutes, undoubtedly depend on the faithful commitment with which consecrated persons respond to their vocation. But they have a future to the extent that still other men and women generously welcome the Lord’s call. The problem of vocations is a real challenge which directly concerns the various Institutes but also involves the whole Church. [We] must have confidence in the Lord Jesus, who continues to call men and women to follow Him. [Those called] must entrust themselves to the Holy Spirit, who inspires and bestows the charisms of the consecrated life. Therefore, while we rejoice in the action of the Spirit, who rejuvenates the Bride of Christ by enabling the consecrated life to flourish in many nations, we must also pray unceasingly to the Lord of the harvest, that He will send workers to His Church in order to meet the needs of the new evangelization (cf. Mt 9:37-38). Besides promoting prayer for vocations, it is essential to act, by means of explicit presentation and appropriate catechesis, with a view to encouraging in those called to the consecrated life that free, willing and generous response which carries into effect the grace of vocation. The invitation of Jesus, “Come and see” (Jn 1:39), is the golden rule of pastoral work for promoting vocations, even today. Following the example of founders and foundresses, this work aims at presenting the attraction of the person of the Lord Jesus and the beauty of the total gift of self for the sake of the Gospel. A primary responsibility of all consecrated men and women is therefore to propose with courage, by word and example, the ideal of the following of Christ, and then to support the response to the Spirit’s action in the heart of those who are called. After the enthusiasm of the first meeting with Christ, there comes the constant struggle of everyday life, a struggle which turns a vocation into a tale of friendship with the Lord. In view of this, the pastoral work of promoting vocations should make use of suitable help, such as spiritual direction, in order to nourish that personal response of love of the Lord which is the necessary condition for becoming disciples and apostles of His Kingdom. Moreover, […] the task of promoting vocations should increasingly express a joint commitment of the whole Church. It calls for the active collaboration of pastors, religious, families and teachers, as required in something which forms an integral part of the overall pastoral plan of every particular Church. […] The effective cooperation of the whole People of God, with the support of Providence, cannot help but give rise to an abundance of divine gifts. Christian solidarity should abound in meeting the needs of vocational formation. […] The most authentic way to support the Spirit’s action is for Institutes to invest their best resources generously in vocational work, especially by their serious involvement in working with youth.

Guidelines for Requesting Mass Intentions at St. Gertrude ChurchThe practice of offering Masses for others – living or deceased – is a long-standing tradition in the Catholic Church. We find not only the origins of this practice dating to the early Church but we also clearly recognize its importance as it is usually considered that special graces are obtained for whom the Mass is said. When we face the death of someone, even a person who is not Catholic, to have a Mass offered for the repose of his soul and to offer our prayers are more beneficial and comforting than any other sympathy card or bouquet of flowers. To have a Mass offered on the occasion of a birthday, anniversary or special need is appropriate, beneficial and appreciated.

According to Canon Law, we are required to fulfill intentions within a year. This practice of requesting Masses is so popular at St. Gertrude Parish that Masses offered in the Church are scheduled out many months in advance. We have enacted the following guidelines to allow as many parishioners and friends as possible to offer intentions.

Please read the following guidelines carefully:1. We have two options as to where the Mass may be offered:

• Church: The intention is assigned a specific time and date and will be printed in the bulletin the week prior.• Dominican Friars: These are not public Masses and will be said by one of the friars in the order they are received. They are

generally said within the next few months. If the friars receive an intention for a large number of Masses they may send some of the intentions to the Dominican Mission Office for distribution to other Dominican priests who will be able to celebrate these Masses within the year.

2. Masses in the Church can be scheduled up to 51 weeks from the current date. This will allow for family members to request a first anniversary Mass for the recently deceased who have their funerals at St. Gertrude.

3. We can only accept one intention per household per month to be offered in the Church. This limitation does not apply to Dominican Friar Masses.

4. We cannot have more than one request for the same intention in the same week in the Church.5. Requests are honored on a first-come, first-served basis. 6. A $5 stipend, as determined by the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, is to accompany each Mass request. You may give more if you wish.

However, no one will be denied an intention because of inability to pay.7. There may be only one name per intention. This is according to Canon Law. Exceptions may be for a husband and wife or an entire

family.8. No Mass requests will be taken over the telephone at the Parish Office. We prefer intentions to be requested by stopping in the Parish

Office during business hours. If that is not possible, requests and stipends may be mailed in and will be scheduled when received. Please be sure to include your contact information with your request.

9. Mass intentions cannot be scheduled for the three days of the Sacred Triduum: Holy Thursday, Good Friday or Holy Saturday. Mass intentions will not be accepted for the following dates: Christmas Eve, Christmas, Easter, All Souls Day (Nov. 2), St. Gertrude’s Feast Day (Nov. 16), Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day and Thanksgiving. These Mass intentions will be for the general intentions of our priests and parishioners.

10. Mass Intentions will not be rescheduled if a verbal announcement was not heard during Mass. The priest is under the strict obligation to remember the person for whom the Mass is being offered and it is presumed that the priest will offer the Mass as requested. The intention is a spiritual act and its verbal publication neither adds nor subtracts from its validity.

11. One Mass every Sunday and holiday must be scheduled for the intentions of our parishioners known as “Pro Populo” (For the People) as required by Canon Law. A Dominican Requiem Mass intention is also celebrated each week.
