EditorialShaping a vibrant future through the arts

A flying bus and fish on stilts greet visitors at the Keppel Centre for Art Education. With its whimsical installations and interactive programmes, the Centre is an integral part of the National Gallery Singapore, Singapore’s newest visual arts institution. Serving as a natural complement to the museum’s art galleries, the Centre is the region’s first art education facility designed to expose young visitors to the arts (see story on pages 22 to 25).

Artist Sandra Lee drew inspiration from the Gallery’s unrivalled collection of Southeast Asian artworks in creating the fantastical forest of the Art Playscape, one of the four spaces of the Centre. Two other spaces, the Project Gallery and Children’s Museum, reinforce the Centre’s role as a conduit for art appreciation and learning by allowing young visitors to step into the shoes of an artist or curator, and create or curate their own art pieces.

The link between art and education may not always be obvious, but there is increasing awareness of the importance of art education in developing a vibrant society and culture. Through art appreciation, individuals learn to sharpen their critical perception, heighten their social awareness and expand their capacity for self-expression. Art allows children to explore and discover their world – be it through sensing the texture of modelling clay on their fingers, or revelling at the mystery of paint colours blending.

Keppel has been a long-standing supporter of the arts. Through the years, we have grown with the arts organisations that we supported in their pioneering days, including Singapore Symphony Orchestra, Singapore Dance Theatre and Singapore Lyric Opera. Overseas, in countries like Brazil, support for the arts is an important component of our efforts to nurture communities wherever we operate.

Keppel has also focused on developing audiences for the arts. Keppel Nights, a programme in partnership with Esplanade – Theatres On the Bay, gives students from heartland schools access to world-class performances, inspiring them to dream big (see story on page 41).

Conceived with interactivity at the forefront, the Keppel Centre for Art Education will evolve through constant engagement with its young visitors. The Centre’s Project Gallery is designed to be filled with works by visitors reflecting on the theme of ‘Homes of the Future’.

Many more discoveries will take place once the Centre opens its doors with the rest of the Gallery on 24 November 2015. In line with its aim to be a Gallery for the people, Singaporeans and permanent residents will enjoy free entry.

Trained under the ‘Best Friends of the Gallery’ programme, many Keppel Volunteers helped to facilitate activities for students invited to trial the Centre in October. The volunteers will continue to support the Centre after it opens to the public. Their participation demonstrates Keppel’s belief in going beyond monetary contributions to engage people in its community efforts.

As the Centre develops in fascinating ways to meet the needs of its young visitors, so too will Keppel continue to grow with the communities in which we operate. Through our support of the arts and other community initiatives, we will shape a vibrant future for all.

4 Sustaining Growth

Steady returnsKeppel REIT Management, the Manager of Keppel REIT, r e p o r t e d a h i g h e r distributable income of $54.4 million for 3Q 2015 and $163.2 mil l ion for the year-to-date 2015, registering a 4.6% and 1.8% increase from their corresponding periods in 2014 respectively. Quarter-on-quarter, the Manager also achieved sustained leve l s of d i s t r ibutab le income.

The improved distributable income was due largely to better performance from Ocean Financial Centre, Bugis Junction Towers and 8 Chifley Square in Sydney.

The Manager has declared a Distribution per Unit (DPU) of 1.70 cents for 3Q 2015, which translates to an annual ised distr ibution yield of 7.2%.

During the quarter, the Manager increased its fixed-rate loans to over 70%, which will insulate against interest rate fluctuations and at the same time allow for operational and financial flexibilities.

The Manager’s disciplined c a p i t a l m a n a g e m e n t approach saw Keppel REIT’s average cost of debt remain constant at 2.5%, with interest coverage ratio at a healthy 4.4 times.

In keeping with ongoing efforts to reduce volatility and provide greater certainty over future income distributions, the Manager has also hedged almost 100% of distribution payment from Australia up till 1Q 2016.

Keppel REIT’s weighted average term to maturity remained stable at 3.6 years. The Manager continued to maintain low refinancing obl igat ions as at end-September 2015, with close to 100% of Keppel REIT’s total borrowings not due for repayment till 2017.

To-date , the Manager has concluded a total of 82 leases or approximately 1.1 million sf of office space, with approximately 43% or 470,000 sf (34 leases)

committed in 3Q 2015. This brought overall portfolio occupancy to 98.5% as at 3Q 2015.

The Manager continued its lease management efforts to retain and secure tenants. These efforts saw a high tenant retention rate of 90% for its Singapore assets in 3Q 2015. The Manager has also completed 100% of all leases due for review and almost all leases due for renewal in 2015. With this, approximately 70% of total leases are not due for renewal till 2018 and beyond.

Despite the challenging leasing market sentiments, the Manager has achieved a positive rent reversion averaging 16% for office

leases signed, renewed and reviewed to-date.

The Manager also continues to mainta in a hea l thy weighted average lease expiry of approximately 8.5 years and 6 years for its top 10 tenants and overall portfolio respectively.

Looking ahead, market conditions are expected to be challenging due to the upcoming office supply over the next two years and possible rising interest rate environment. The Manager will intensify its tenant retention and engagement efforts to support occupancy and rental rates, while maintaining a well-staggered lease expiry profi le for sustainable and resilient returns. keppelite

Higher distributable income for Keppel DC REITKeppel DC REIT posted a creditable set of results with the release of its 3Q earnings on 15 October 2015.

For 3Q 2015, net property income of $21.4 million was

marginally lower than the IPO forecast due to higher property tax expenses as well as foreign exchange losses from the depreciation of certain foreign currencies. This was partially offset by

the rental contributions from Intellicentre 2.

Distributable income for the same quarter was 2.2% higher than projected, at $14.5 million due to realisation of hedging gains and lower interest expenses due to the interest rate swaps entered. Keppel DC REIT, which declares distributions on a half-yearly basis, said the next distribution to be paid out would be for the six months to 31 December 2015.

During the quarter, the REIT successfully completed

the sale and leaseback transaction of Intellicentre 2 in Sydney, Australia, which increased its portfolio to nine quality data centre properties. The 20-year t r i p l e - n e t l e a s e o f Intellicentre 2 also extended the REIT’s portfolio Weighted Average Lease Expiry to 8 .9 yea r s , enhanc ing income stream stability. P o r t f o l i o o c c u p a n c y r a t e r e g i s t e r e d a n improvement at 95.1% as at 30 September 2015, with seven of the nine assets at full occupancy. keppeliteKeppel DC REIT’s maiden latest acquisition, Intellicentre 2 in Sydney, Australia, extended Keppel

Sharpening focus Keppel Telecommunications & Transportation (Keppel T&T), reported its 3Q financial results on 20 October 2015.

Keppel T&T reported a 17.1 % fall in 3Q 2015 net profit to $15.3 million, from $18.5 million one year ago. Net profit for the nine months ended September 2015 was at $47.0 million, a 2.5% decrease from $48.2 million a year ago. This was largely due to the absence of contributions from the two data centres

that were d ivested to Keppel DC REIT in December last year.

The warehouse at Tampines Logistics Park commenced operations in 2Q 2015 and has achieved an occupancy

of more than 60% with commitments of over 70%.

The Data Centre Division has maintained near-full occupancy at its facilities. Fit-out works for customers at Almere Data Centre 2 in the Netherlands have progressed as planned and operations have commenced.

During the quarter, the division also announced plans develop its fourth data centre in Singapore, Keppel Datahub 3. keppelite

Earnings per unit improved to 0.11 cents for the quarter from a loss per unit of 0.10 cents a year ago.

Green championsENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIPOcean Financial Centre and Marina Bay Financial Centre (MBFC) were among six buildings to be awarded the Water Efficient Building Gold certification by PUB, Singapore’s national water agency, on 2 October 2015 . Bug i s Junc t i on Towers received the Silver Certification.

Mr Toh Wah San, Executive V i ce P re s i den t , A s se t Management, Keppel REIT Management, said, “We recognise that sustainability makes good bus ine s s sense. In keeping with our proactive approach towards environmental management and protection, we spare no effort in incorporating

sustainable initiatives in our properties where feasible. The certifications from PUB are testament to our efforts and will spur us in our sustainability journey.”

Ocean Financial Centre is an eco-icon with a myriad of innovative green features. These inc lude rooftop g a rd e n s t h a t h a r v e s t rainwater for irrigation, cooling towers that recycle condensate water and water-efficient tap fittings, all of which contribute towards overall savings of 42 million litres of water annually –enough to fill 17 Olympic-sized swimming pools.

The building also boasts one of the world’s largest vertical green walls, the size of

which is equivalent to eight tennis courts. The green wall features an automatic drip irrigation system to ensure minimal maintenance.

At the MBFC integrated d e v e l o p m e n t w h i c h Keppe l RE IT co-owns , the management ensures e ff i c i en t wate r usage with advanced water-leak detection and monitoring systems. Technical staff are trained to monitor water consumption and analyse the data collected. Tenants are also educated on water saving measures through circulars and seminars conducted by water efficiency management consultants.

Separately, Ocean Financial Centre was lauded for its

efficient energy management at the ASEAN Energy Awards 2015 held in conjunction with the 33rd ASEAN Ministers on Energy Meeting in Kuala Lumpur, Ma lays i a , on 6 October 2015. The building was named the winner in the ‘Large Green Building’ category. The annual awards aim to promote regional cooperation on projects relating to energy efficiency and sustainability.

the ‘Excellence in Energy Management’ category from Guest-of-Honour Dr Amy Khor, Senior Minister of State for the Environment and Water Resources, at the awards ceremony held during the National Energy Efficiency Conference on 6 October 2015.

Organised by the National Environment Agency, the Economic Development Board and the Energy Market Authority, the awards aim to foster a culture of sustained energy efficiency improvement in industry and encourage companies to adop t a p roac t i v e approach towards energy management.

Since 2010, Keppel DHCS has pledged to improve its energy efficiency and reduce its carbon intensity emissions by 16% from 2020 business-as-usual levels.

To achieve this, the company outlined a 10-year road map to enhance energy efficiency, focusing on three main areas – process optimisation, management of energy use and asset optimisation.

Some of the key highlights of its initiatives include putting in resources to test and evaluate energy-efficient technology, as wel l as implementing smart controls such as real-time forecasting, process s imulation and optimisation.

Since 2010, Keppel DHCS has achieved a total energy saving of 14,283 MWh. This translates to a reduction of about 8,577 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.

Seizing opportunities in Latin AmericaDespite challenges faced by some cities in Latin America, long te rm inves tment opportunities in the region remain. Several countries have implemented energy reforms which, coupled with further developments in infrastructure, will be needed

This was the consensus by business leaders and

Strengthening Tianjin tiesSeveral agreements were inked between Singapore and China to broaden and deepen their partnership in the Sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco-City (Sino-Singapore Eco-City).

MEETING OF MINDSThe 12th China-Singapore Joint Council for Bilateral C o o p e r a t i o n ( J C B C ) meeting, as well as the eighth T ianj in Eco-City Jo int Steer ing Counci l (JSC) Meeting were both recently held in Singapore on 13 October 2015. The high-level political platform was co-chaired by Singapore’s Deputy Prime Minister and Coordinating Minister for National Security, Mr Teo Chee Hean and China’s Vice Premier Mr Zhang Gaoli.

BOOSTING RMB TRADEAt the JCBC meet ing, Singapore and China agreed on new initiatives which

would broaden the cross-border Renminbi (RMB) channels between the two countries.

During the meeting, it was announced that the existing cross-border RMB initiatives between Singapore and China-Singapore Suzhou Industrial Park (SIP) as well as the Sino-Singapore Eco-City would be expanded to beyond the two projects to the rest of Suzhou and Tianjin. The move would not only give more financing options to corporations and businesses in those cities, but also provide financial institutions and investors in Singapore additional avenues

to deploy their growing RMB liquidity in Singapore.

In addit ion, qual i fy ing privately-owned banks in the Sino-Singapore Eco-City would be allowed to borrow from Singapore-based banks. This would lend support to the development of privately-owned banks in the city and allow such banks in the city to establish commercial relationships with banks in Singapore.

These developments follow an announcement made during the previous JCBC meeting held in October 2013, where measures allowing cross-border flows

of RMB for SIP and the Sino-Singapore Eco-City were inked, thus encouraging the two important bilateral projects to play a bigger role in pilot cross-border RMB operations.

RENEWING RELATIONSThe Keppel Group took the opportunity to renew its friendly ties with Tianjin when government leaders visited Singapore for the JSC meeting in October 2015.

The projects are part of the three-year work plan to prepare for the city’s 10th anniversary in 2018.

Both countries, with a wealth of successful experience in urban planning, construction and management to draw from, will allow the Sino-Singapore Eco-City to trial, implement and showcase models of susta inab le development through the four projects. COUNTERING HAZEAs a countermeasure to the recurrent haze over the last few years, a comprehensive b u s i n e s s c o n t i n u i t y management (BCM) plan for the Group was developed in 2013. The resurgence of the haze in September 2015 saw these plans being implemented expeditiously by the business units.

B e s i d e s i n t r o d u c i n g safeguards for susceptible employees, especially those

with chronic lung and heart diseases, the pregnant and elderly, business units have also implemented measures for staff involved in outdoor work, such as additional indoor rest breaks, provision of N95 masks, and a pause on crane lifting, vessel and vehicle operations during poor visibility conditions. Some staff have also been redeployed indoors amid an overal l reduction in non-essent ia l outdoor activities.

In addition, carbon filters have been installed within air-conditioning units in off i ces , bu i ld ings and plants to reduce pollutant levels. The frequency of a i r - c o n d i t i o n i n g ma in tenance has a l so been increased, and some

building entrances have been shut to reduce the flow of pollutants indoors.

A n o n g o i n g i m p a c t assessment of the haze and the effects of increased amounts of air pollutants and dust particles on productivity, business operations and equipment efficiency is also being carried out.

Regular updates on the haze s i tuat ion and PSI levels to employees are maintained through email alerts, announcements, and toolbox meetings.

Led by Keppel Corporation Chairman Dr Lee Boon Yang, board directors and management from across the Group enjoyed a sneak preview of the Centre on 1 October 2015. Speaking at the preview event, Dr Lee said, “At Keppel, we adopt a long term view to nurture communit ies. We have supported many arts groups and programmes over the years as we believe that the arts and culture have an important place in everyone’s lives. In supporting the arts, we promote avenues for expression and enrich the lives of Singaporeans.

For the inaugural 2015 to 2016 instalment, the Gallery invited four artists to develop thought-provoking interpretations of the theme of “home”.

ART CORRIDOR‘ Vo y a g e ’ b y a r t i s t Twardzik-Ching Chor Leng is a large-scale, colourful puzzle artwork inspired by Singapore’s waterways. Acrylic sheets of different colours were layered to create a topographical relief.

Visitors can interact with the artwork by sliding acrylic chips along the maze of pathways, learning about the interplay of colours, patterns and rhythms while finding the shortest and longest routes to complete the puzzle.

ART PLAYSCAPE‘ A d v e n t u re s o f t h e Enchanted Forest ’ i s a f a n t a s t i c a l w o r l d created by artist Sandra Lee where visitors can explore a beautiful forest w i th a mag ica l t ree house and labyr inth. Visitors will encounter animal characters who are lost and need help to find their way home. Through adventure trails, visitors uncover hidden stories, mysteries and surprises. In creating this storybook world, Lee drew inspiration from the flora, fauna and motifs in Southeast Asian art.

‘Home-a-Sapiens’ by artist Tan Wee Lit at the Project Gallery

PROJECT GALLERY Artist Tan Wee Lit’s ‘Home-a-Sapiens’ inspires visitors to imagine and design their own homes of the future, while considering the innovative adaptations that can be made to our living arrangements to protect our natural environment. Through a variety of hands-on activities, visitors can create their own responses, which they are then welcome to display in the Project Gallery.

CHILDREN’S MUSEUMMilenko Prvacki’s ‘Visual Dictionary’ recreates his own studio environment, allowing visitors to gain insight into the Cultural Medal l ion winner’s creative process.

T h ro u g h e x p e r i e n t i a l learning and role-play, young visitors will learn to select artworks, write labels and conduct exhibition tours for their peers. Visitors can

correspond directly with the artist by leaving a postcard in a special mailbox.

As Milenko puts it, what is important is “for kids…to play, to use any method, to use any material and put them together, create art

and enjoy. I always tell them, there is no good or bad art. All art is good for you.”

SPECIAL DISPLAYSAs part of its special display programme, the Centre features works by two artists, a panoramic cityscape

Spurring Innovations

Creative evolutionTo encourage a culture of innovation and process e x c e l l e n c e , K e p p e l Infrastructure first launched its Pi Movement initiative on 2 January 2014. The ongoing initiative provides a platform for employees to showcase their ideas through innovative projects. The inaugural edition culminated in an awards ceremony on 28 August 2015 in conjunction with Keppel Infrastructure’s dinner and dance, where nine top teams were recognised for efforts in improving business processes, work methods, products and services. Keppelite showcases two of the Gold+ Pi Award winning projects below.

KEPPEL MERLIMAU COGENOne of the innovat ion projects that garnered the highest Gold+ Pi Award was ‘Automatic Blowdown Control’, a project by a team from Keppel Merlimau Cogen (KMC).

Under normal operating conditions, the quality of water used to generate steam for the steam turbines at the KMC plant has to be maintained at a certain level. To achieve this, a portion of the water is deliberately discarded – a process known as ‘blowdown’.

Minimising blowdown rates reduces the consumption of raw water and chemicals, the cost of treating used water, and also improves plant efficiency from reduced heat loss in the water-to-steam cycle.

Previously, the blowdown rate was controlled using manual valves and based on daily analyses of the water chemistry by maintenance staff, which may lack precision. In response, the team introduced the ‘Automatic Blowdown Control’ fully automated system which measures the water chemistry and computes the precise amount of water that should be discarded.

Since its implementation, the innovation has minimised water losses at the plant, and yielded savings in operating costs and improved operational efficiency.

DOMESTIC SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT CENTREAnother project that won a Gold+ Pi Award was ‘Sand Storm Rider’ by a team from the Domestic Solid Waste Management Centre (DSWMC) in Qatar.

Steam produced by boilers at DSWMC Waste-to-Energy

Plant (WTEP) drives a turbine to generate electricity. After passing through the turbine, the steam condenses as it flows through cooling f ins of the Air Cooled Condenser (ACC) before being recirculated back to the boiler as feedwater.

Over time, performance of the ACC is affected by accumulation of dust and sand on its cooling fins and has to be cleaned regularly. The previous practice of manually cleaning the fins using a hand-held lance is labour intensive and time consuming.

Since the introduction of the mechanised skid, the cleaning process for the Domestic Solid Waste Management Centre’s Air Cooled Condenser is a lot more efficient and effective

To boost the efficacy of the cleaning process, the team designed a mechanised cleaning skid that reduces manpower requirements by more than 10 times and quadruples the efficacy.

Project team leader William Solomon, Manager (WTEP Operations) of DSWMC, shared, “Through th is innovation, waste throughput at the plant has been boosted by more than 6,000 tonnes per year. The new cleaning system also helps us substantially el iminate manual work activities, thereby reducing safety risks.” keppelite

Sharing of Tianjin experience

Keppe l i s focused on b u i l d i n g s u s t a i n a b l e communities. At the 15th Keppel Young Leaders’ Leadersh ip Ser ies ta lk on 15 Oc tobe r 2015 , Mr Ho Tong Yen, GM o f G r o u p C o r p o r a t e Communications, Keppel C o r p o r a t i o n , s h a r e d h i s e xpe r i ence i n the development of the Sino-S ingapore T ianj in Eco-City (Sino-Singapore Eco-City). Before his current appointment, Mr Ho was CEO of the Sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco-City Investment and Development Co. , Ltd. (SSTEC), the master developer of the city, from 2011 to June 2015.

MEETING THE NEEDS OF AN URBANISING WORLDThe Sino-Singapore Eco-City is a landmark bilateral project between the governments of Singapore and China to develop a pract ical , repl icable and scalable model for sustainable city development.

M a n y b u s i n e s s u n i t s across the Keppel Group are involved in the city’s development, including residential and commercial projects by Keppel Land, Keppe l DHCS’ D i s t r i c t Heating and Cooling Plant, Keppel Telecommunications & Transportation’s Integrated Log i s t i c s D i s t r i bu t i on

Centre, and several joint ventures between Keppel I n f ra s t ruc tu re and i t s Chinese partners, which provide infrastructure and environmental management services.

Starting from barren saline and alkal ine wasteland i n 2 0 0 8 , t h e S i n o -Singapore Eco-City has been transformed into an emerging green city with more than 30,000 residents and 2 ,500 reg i s t e red companies.

The project has received good recognition for its efforts to promote sustainable urbanization and has been named China’s first National G r e e n D e v e l o p m e n t Demonstration Zone.

OVERCOMING CHALLENGESMr Ho noted that there were many challenges which had to be overcome along the way, including the difficulty of bringing the first residents to a Greenfield site, and the property market cooling measures imposed by the Chinese authorities from 2011 to 2014. Despite the difficulties, Keppelites

soldiered on. Over time, the start-up area matured. With the growing range of amenities in the city and progressive relaxation of cooling measures, the city has become an increasingly attractive proposition for residents and companies.

Mr Ho added that the project has helped to strengthen relations between China and Singapore, and put Singapore and Keppel on the “world map of eco-cities”. Keppel’s experience in developing the Sino-Singapore Eco-City has further strengthened its brand advantage and capabilities in sustainable urbanisation.

Mr Ho also shared with the young leaders h i s observations on operating in China, including negotiating wi th Ch inese off i c ia l s and business partners, and the importance of being sensitive to cultural differences. He encouraged young Keppelites to seize opportunities for overseas postings to step out of their comfort zones and expand their horizons. keppelite

Public-spirited starIn November 2014, the Embassy of Singapore in Brasilia contacted Mrs Betty Mok, an Administrator at BrasFELS shipyard, for help. A Singaporean had taken ill on a flight, and had been brought to a hospital in Rio de Janeiro for emergency services. The Embassy needed someone, preferably a fellow countryman, to provide him with the necessary support.

The gentle, petite Betty immediately responded. Providing keen attention and care, she was a pillar of support to the patient and his family, during his time in the Rio de Janeiro hospital which lasted for about a month.

During this period, she was also the contact point be tween the Embassy and the patient, providing the Embassy with regular updates on his health status and needs. For her selfless acts, Betty was conferred the PS21 Star Customer Award by M r Te o C h e e H e a n , Singapore’s Deputy Prime Minister (DPM), Coordinating M in i s t e r fo r Na t i ona l Security, and Minister in charge of the Civil Service at this year’s Public Service Awards Ceremony, held on 15 October.

Highlighting Betty in his

speech, DPM Teo said, “She helped the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) assist a Singaporean who had fallen seriously ill during a long f l ight, and was hospitalised in Rio de Janeiro. The nearest S ingapore Embassy, located in Brasilia, which is about 1,000 km from Rio de Janeiro, reached out to its contacts in the Rio de Janeiro region to see if anyone could provide urgent help. Responding without hesitation to the Embassy’s call was Betty, who, on several occasions, travel led two hours by car to Rio to check on the hospitalised Singaporean’s condition. She also provided

The PS21 Star Customer Award recognises members of the public who have made significant and positive contributions to public service delivery.

Congratulating Betty on the award, Ms Chin Siew Fei, Head of Mission and Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy, said, “Over the past few years, you have been extremely helpful to the Embassy, in particular, i n render ing consu la r assistance to Singaporeans. We sincerely appreciate your help especially since we do not have a presence in Rio. Although you are not an Embassy staff, you have gone out of your way to assist a fellow Singaporean and his family.”

Keppelites Around the World

It was not easy at first, but Ralph Chen (pictured with his wife) quickly adapted to life in Guangdong province and now helps fellow Keppelites adjust too

Growing up in Singapore, Ralph Chen, CFO at Keppel Logistics Foshan always knew that he wanted to pursue a career overseas. “We’re told that people are Singapore’s best asset. I believe that wholeheartedly. When I was young, I thought one o f t he s t ronges t competitive advantages we Singaporeans had was our mobil i ty,” said the 34-year-old.

It was little surprise then, that Ralph sought a career with overseas opportunities shortly after graduating from university. He was posted to China in 2010 with an agriculture and fast moving consumer goods company, where he faced a steep learning curve picking up the language.

“The first year was very tough. I was from an English-s p e a k i n g b a c k g ro u n d and had to adapt to an e n v i r o n m e n t w h e r e Mandarin was the dominant language – even for business documents! I t fe lt l ike university exams all over again, familiarising myself with accounting terms in Mandarin,” laughed Ralph. “But eventually you learn, and you adapt. That’s how you get ahead.”

Global citizenFive years on, Ralph is more conf ident in h i s command of the language. Hav ing jo ined Keppe l Logistics in 2013, Ralph now leads a team of more than 30 f inancial staff and shuttles across the company’s subsidiaries in Shenzhen and Hong Kong.

He switches effortlessly b e t w e e n E n g l i s h a n d Mandarin while performing management and finance f u n c t i o n s f o r K e p p e l Te lecommunicat ions & Transportation and its river port investments in China.

He shared, “Adapting to a new environment is never easy. Having experienced it myself, I now help secondees and management associates settle in too.

“ A l t h o u g h m y t e a m c o m p r i s e s a m i x o f Singaporeans and local Chinese, we all manage to bond over a distinctly Singaporean past ime – eating!

“Singapore food is not hard to find in Guangdong as the province is pretty cosmopolitan. Due to the loca l ingred ients used though, you don’t quite get the same taste of home.”

Displaying Keppel’s core value of agility and the Can-Do! spirit, the self-professed

(geek) took matters into his own hands and taught himself how to cook in order to satisfy h i s c rav ings fo r loca l Singaporean cuisine.

With financial knowledge and culinary skills to boot,

Ralph remains modest. “I mostly cook for gatherings with friends and colleagues. Out of all the reviews I’ve received so far, the biggest fan of my cooking is still my wife. She rates my food 7/10,” he laughed. keppelite
