INSTRUCTIONAL MEDIA PRODUCTION MANAGEMENT

INSTRUCTIONAL MEDIA PRODUCTION IS THE PROCESS OF BRINGING TO LIFE THE INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGNER’S PLANS AND SPECIFICATIONS.

An instructional designer conducts the necessary analyses, develops the goal and objectives, specifies the activities, and determines the

appropriate evaluation procedures through media

that will provide the instruction support.

THE PRODUCTION PROCESS

3 PHASES IN MEDIA PROJECT PRE-PRODUCTION => PLANNING PHASES, WHEN THE

TEAMS LOOK AT WHAT NEEDS TO BE ACCOMPLISHED AND DECIDES HOW TO MAKE IT HAPPEN.

PRODUCTION => INVOLVES DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT, WHEN THE PLANS ARE PUT INTO ACTION AND THE FINAL PRODUCT IS COMPLETED.

POST-PRODUCTION => INCLUDES DISTRIBUTION, INTEGRATION, AND ARCIVING OF THE PRODUCT, WHEN THE PRODUCT ITS FORMATTED FOR DISTRIBUTION.

ORGANIZING A PRODUCTION TEAM

3 ESSENTIAL COMPONENTS OF PRODUCTION TEAM

MANAGEMENT => THE ORGANIZATIONAL ASPECT OF THE PRODUCTION.

DIRECTION => THE GUIDING FORCE THAT SUGGEST HOW THE RESOURCES AVAILABLE WILL BE USED TO CREATE THE FINISHED PRODUCT.

ARTIST => THE INDIVIDUALS WHO APPLY THEIR CREATIVE SKILLS TO THE PRODUCT.

THE MOST IMPORTANT ROLE IN ANY PRODUCTION PROJECT IS

THE CLIENT.

CLIENT IS THE PERSON WHO HAS REQUESTED THE PRODUCT, AND THE CLIENT’S SATISFACTION IS IN LARGE PART A MEASURE OF THE PROJECT’S SUCCESS.

PRODUCTION MANAGEMENT

PRODUCTION MANAGEMENT PARAMETERS INCLUDE A TIMEFRAME AND A GIVEN SET OF

AVAILABLE RESOURCES (INCLUDING ACCESS TO TOOLS, THE SKILL OF PRODUCTION TEAM MEMBERS, AND MONEY)

MANAGEMENT INCLUDES MAINTAINING COMMUNICATION AMONG PROJECT’S PARTICIPANTS AND STAKEHOLDERS.

THE GOAL IS TO COMPLETE A PROJECT THAT IS OF THE HIGHEST QUALITY “ON TIME AND UNDER BUDGET”.

IT NEEDS CAREFUL PLANNING, ORGANIZATION, SUPERVISION TO KEEP A PRODUCTION PROJECT ON TASK.

PLANNING FOR SUCCESS:THE PRODUCTION CALENDAR

A PRODUCTION CALENDAR ESTABLISHES WHEN THE SPECIFIC TASKS ARE TO BE COMPLETED AND OFTEN INCLUDES NOTES ON WHO IS SPECIFICALLY RESPONSIBLE FOR THE COMPLETION OF EACH TASK. IT IS A COMBINATION OF MILESTONE AND DROP-DEAD DATES

MILESTONES ARE THE DATES WHEN IMPORTANT ACTIVITIES ARE TO BE ACCOMPLISHED.

DROP-DEAD DATES ARE WHEN THE SPECIFIC TASK MUST BE COMPLETED.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED :

TO BEGIN WITH THE FINISHED PROJECT DEADLINE DATE AND WORK BACKWARD FROM THERE TO ESTABLISH THE OTHER DEADLINES AND MILESTONES THAT COMPRISE THE ENTIRE PRODUCTION CYCLE.

STORYBOARDS ARE BIG BOARD ON WHICH POSTED ROUGH SKETCHES THAT VISUALLY “TELL A STORY.”

EXPERT REVIEW, IS SOLICITING INPUT FROM A PERSON OR PERSONS WITH A GREAT DEAL OF EXPERIENCE WITH THE TYPE OF INSTRUCTION MEDIA UNDER DEVELOPMENT.

PEER REVIEW, OTHER PRODUCERS AND/OR INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGNERS MAY BE ASKED TO REVIEW THE PRODUCT.

USABILITY TESTING, CONSISTS OF EVALUATING THE PRODUCT BY OBSERVING IT IN ACTION WITH POTTENTIAL END USERS.

FINAL THOUGHTS

IT IS IMPORTANT TO KEEP IN MIND THAT ALL ASPECTS OF PRODUCTION MANAGEMENT AND EVALUATION SHOULD CONTRIBUTE TO THE SUCCESS OF THE PROJECT.

IF ANY SUPPORTING ACTIVITY CREATES MORE PROBLEMS THAN IT SOLVES, IT MAY BE NECESSARY TO MODIFY THE EXISTING ACTIVITY OR CREATE A NEW ONE TO REPLACE IT.
