My granddad name is Pop, and my 3 ½ year-old grandson is Liam. He is with us – without his parents or his sister – for a special week of camp. The city boy who lives in Winston-Salem, NC is going to experience various things in the country in Oconee County that he is not able to do in the city. So we will feed cows, ride a tractor, and other fun things that Pop can come up with during the week. We are off to a great start. To fill in the gaps between the country experiences, Liam’s grandmother bought several workbooks for him to use. One of them is already a favorite. It is helping him to learn his letters and to write out these letters. The method is simple – there are several forms of the letters on the page and he traces them with a pencil. Other pages in another book have mazes for him to trace – all helping with the skills of holding a pencil and shaping the marks on a page that we know as writing. So, if the week turns out to be very rainy and we don’t get to all of the farm animals, at least he will have a big head start on writing the alphabet! Last Sunday I preached about what it means for First Baptist Church to be a Discipling Church. I thought about that as I was working with Liam on tracing his letters. When Jesus said, “If you continue in my word you are truly my disciples” (John 8:31) he was calling all of his followers to come close to him and to begin to trace our lives after the forms that he has given us in his Word. It is this repetition of obedience – tracing our lives after the form of Jesus – that we begin to learn the alphabet of grace. This Sunday we turn our attention to being a “Glorifying Church.” Worship is how we glorify God in our lives. Using the great experience of Isaiah as told in Isaiah 6:1-8, we will explore the meaning of worship and ways that we can meet God when we gather together for worship. Eugene Peterson said it well. “Worship does not satisfy our hunger for God; it whets our appetite.” I hope that your experience of worship at First Baptist does not satisfy all of your hungers for God, but instead whets your appetite and keeps you coming back in search of the nourishing food of the gospel. I hope that worship whets your appetite to trace your life to look like Jesus. David Hull

First Thoughts

9:40-10:40 AM Bible Study All Ages

This is the week for PopCamp at my house.

David Hull
