In the Greek language of the New Testament, the same root word is found in words that we translate to be “grace,” “gift,” and “thanks.” The word in the Greek is charis. Grace is the wonderful gift that we receive which we do not deserve. The hymn says it well – it is truly “Amazing Grace.” Remember, that the same word for grace is the word for gift. We have two hands, as Billy Graham would say, one to receive undeserved grace with deep gratitude and the other hand to give generously because grace is so amazing. These two hands are not to be “cisterns for hoarding” but are to be “channels for sharing.” Christian Counselor David Seamands reflected on this very thing as he wrote about receiving and giving: Many years ago I was driven to the conclusion that the two major causes of most emotional problems among evangelical Christians are these: the failure to understand, receive, and live out God’s unconditional grace and forgiveness; and the failure to give out that unconditional love, forgiveness, and grace to other people. . . We read, we hear, we believe a good theology of grace. But that’s not the way we live. The good news of the Gospel of grace has not penetrated the level of our emotions. When we live our lives with one of our hands tied behind our backs, we cannot be all that God wants us to be. We are not emotionally healthy because our lives are out of balance. Too many Christians are not using both “hands” in the life of faith. Our gratitude for God’s grace can shape us to be generous. As the Apostle Paul challenged us in 2 Corinthians 8:7, “excel in this grace of giving.” I encourage you to let each day call forth praise and worship for the abundant generosity of God’s grace, and then return to God our tithes and offerings, our time and talents so that the good news of God’s grace can be shared through the ministries and missions of First Baptist Church. It is easy to grow complacent in our giving to God. That is especially true during an interim season in a church. Join the chorus of other church members who say “I Believe in the ministry and mission of First Baptist Church.” Using both of our hands for the Kingdom of God, let’s “excel in the grace of giving.” Are you a cistern or a channel? First Thoughts

I love what Billy Graham said about stewardship. “God has given us two hands – one to receive with and the other to give with. We are not cisterns made for hoarding; we are channels made for sharing.” Let’s think about that for a moment as we explore the theme of generosity.

These two hands are not to be “cisterns for hoarding” but are to be “channels for sharing.”

Christian Counselor David Seamands reflected on this very thing as he wrote about receiving and giving: Many years ago I was driven to the conclusion that the two major causes of most emotional problems among evangelical Christians are these: the failure to understand, receive, and live out God’s unconditional grace and forgiveness; and the failure to give out that unconditional love, forgiveness, and grace to other people. .

Welcome Jacob Waldrip! Jacob Waldrip is coming to FBC Augusta to serve as a Ministerial Resident. He and his wife, Brittani, are

moving from Greenville, SC, where they have worked at the Frazee Center, a non-profit after-school program for under-resourced youth and children. Jacob is a May 2016 graduate of the McAfee School of Theology at Mercer University and a 2013 graduate of Furman University, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Religion. Jacob is originally from Chester, SC, where his father, Rev. Clay Waldrip, has served as pastor of FBC Chester for 25 years. His mother teaches school in Chester, and he has an older sister, Rebecca, and a younger brother, Matthew. Jacob has a passion to see the local church engage the whole gospel and as a result, seek to effect change in people’s lives, local communities, and the world through following and sharing Christ. As a ministerial resident, and given our interim needs, roughly half of this position will be in support of youth ministry. Beyond this commitment, Jacob will assist in young adult ministry, pastoral care, and missional outreach.

“Sharing Your Story”Our summer study, “Telling Tales Out of School - Literally!” continues Wednesday, June 8. The question we will consider is “Who taught you to pray?” Please come with a story about learning to pray.I believe sharing our stories is important. One obvious reason is that it helps people get to know each other better. It has been interesting over just a few sessions that people are already learning how much they have in common. They are connecting with each other and with people and places they discover they know in common.I also like story sharing as an easy way to give a testimony. That idea in itself can be rather intimidating. For me, it brings to mind memories of thinking I had to stand up in front of Sunday night church and share my testimony in order to be a good disciple. Maybe receiving each others’ stories and sharing our own around the table can lead us to deep places where we are willing to ask and answer, “What’s God doing in your life right now?” That’s an important question for each of us to consider and learn from daily as well as share with a friend who might need to hear it. See you Wednesday! Yours kindly, Chip Reeves

IMPORTANT NOTICE - Deacons’ Meeting Rescheduled to June 6

The Deacons’ Meeting originally scheduled for Monday, June 13 has been moved up one week to Monday, June 6. The change is necessary due to scheduling conflicts with Interim Senior Pastor, Jim Walls and Moderator, Larry Fletcher, both of whom will be out-of-town at Youth Camp the week of June 13. Because Dr. Walls and Mr. Fletcher must both be present for new business to be brought at the June meeting, it was deemed necessary to reschedule the meeting. Please note, also, that the next Church in Conference has been rescheduled from Sunday, June 19 to Sunday, June 26.

The Church Nominating Committee is soliciting nominations from church members for a Trustee to serve a seven year term starting in 2017. If you have a nomination, please submit the person’s name with a brief resume of the individual’s qualifications to serve as a Trustee. Submit this information in writing to Lavinia Polatty at the Church Office or by email to Doug Clepper, Nomination Committee Chair, at [email protected]. The Nomination Committee will start the selection process for a Trustee in August to be presented to the Church in December.

Korean Children’s Choir! This 200 member choir will be performing at Bell Auditorium Tuesday, June 28 @ 7 PM. A limited number of free tickets are available at the FBC Church Office. It is the first time this Choir has included Augusta in their yearly concert itinerary and promises to be a truly outstanding concert.

Our Church in Prayer

Come, let us sing for joy to the Lord; let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation. Let us come before him with the thanksgiving and extol him with music and song. For the Lord is the great God... Psalm 95:1-3a“I tell you, (Jesus) replied, if my followers are silent, the very stones will cry out.” Luke 19:40Suggested Prayer Points:* Praise God for saving you from your sin through the shed blood of Jesus.* Ask for a greater passion to be “an imitator of Christ.”* Seek to acknowledge the Lord in all your ways.* Give thanksgiving for the wide range of excellent worship music at our church.* Pray that the glory of God will be reflected always in the worship offered by His people at First Baptist Augusta.Reflect: Those who recognize the glory of God cannot keep silent about His love.
