Intrigue of Arts And Crafts Home Plans with our Podcast Guests Bruce Goodman and Leisa Collins
Front Porch Ideas and More
We interview Bruce Goodman and Leisa Collins, experts in Arts and Crafts
home designs. To Bruce and Leisa, Arts and Crafts homes are more than just
architecture; they actually exude a lifestyle:
“We've had many conversations while walking through bungalow
neighborhoods. You just walk by and suddenly you hear: “oh, come on up
here” and the next thing you know you are having tea on the porch with
them and it is just the most open, engaging community. They are really
living the arts and craft life style…” - Leisa

The Arts and Crafts
Movement signifies
simple refined aesthetics
and functional designs,
things that went along
with simple living.
Arts and Crafts artisans
believed in using their
hands and building their
own products to last a
lifetime. Construction
materials consisted of
locally available wood,
stone, brick, etc.
High quality craftsmanship is key to Arts and Crafts
homes. Everything is compactly designed around the
central area where the dining rooms, bedrooms,
kitchens are surrounding the central living area. They
all have grand type porch areas around them.
Bungalow porches typically have exposed
rafters, wide eaves, tapered columns on
pedestals, and significant depth for
socializing.

Other features of Arts and Craft homes are that they have passage
ways that go right through the house for ventilation so you could
open all the windows, the doors, and have screens on them
perhaps.
It would keep the house ventilated and also very open and inviting
but would be comfortable to live in as well.

Design features such as
breakfast nooks, kitchen
countertops, and built-ins are
derived from the Arts and
Crafts style homes.

house trim, double porch
columns, and stone
pedestals on this

home.
The layout allows for flow-
through ventilation and
easy traffic patterns.
