Capture children’s imaginations with stories of the Arctic people. The Arctic Stories Project is a themed approach to the curriculum, following the

unique work of educational philosopher Kieran Egan, who believes “...we make sense of things commonly in story forms; ours is a largely story-shaped world.”

In Arctic Stories, knowledge is given meaning. In learning about people who are historically, socially and culturally distant to us, an emotional engagement is encouraged in children as they follow the Arctic Stories narratives. The resources in this pack provide a cross-curricular scheme for KS2 and 3 with a focus on Geography, Science, English and ICT. The activities encourage a variety of teaching approaches to suit a variety of learning styles – from Visual, to Audio to Kinaesthetic.

Pupils work collaboratively through three narratives; ‘The People of the Deer,’ The Whaler’s Story’ and ‘The Polar Bear’s Story,’ in an interactive, multimedia experience. A CD of stories for listening supplement the work sheets, and a genuine Eskimo tale The Gifts of Kaila storybook is provided for children to read either during or outside lessons.

Full of thoughtful activities, such as: asking pupils to create their own Wikipedia ‘online museum’ and inviting pupils to unlock the secret of ‘The People of the Deer’, this pack’s imaginative approach is designed to develop active and experiential learning in children whilst also promoting the notion of being a Global Citizen.

Learn how to count in both English and Inuit in Michael Arvaarluk Kusuglak’s My Arctic 1,2,3 or let Peter Cumming’s enchanting tale of Leah and Nanook the young polar bear carry you away to Arctic fantasy in Out on the Ice in the Middle of the Bay. Other resources include:

“Arctic Stories engages children enabling them to challenge themselves to achieve across the curriculum whilst allowing them to explore the impact of human actions on the past and future of the planet.”- Anna Bolt, Deputy Head and Year 6 teacher, Llangyfelach Primary School, Swansea

“Arctic Stories has been so successful in our school that we have restructured our schemes of work to ensure Year 5 are using the pack during inspection week next year.”- Ann Lloyd, Head Teacher, Glynncollen Primary School, Swansea

The Arctic adventures do not have to end when you finish the Arctic Stories Project. The Arctic is a vast space with plenty more to explore! Discover other cold, snowy places in the Arctic and Antarctic, and learn more about animals that inhabit them.
