Introduction We have studied woodland in form

four but we have no chance to carry out investigations to apply our knowledge, we decided to make use of the course of Caritas Chan Chun Ha Field Studies Centre in Cheung Chau in order to deepen our interest in Geography.

Objectives of our study

. To study woodland structure.

. To analyze the relationship

between woodland micro-climate, vegetation and soil in a woodland ecosystem.

Analysis of data and data processing

Micro-climate:According to the data we collected: 22.6 -23.3 , 55%-60.5% (humidity), 302,000,000-℃740,000,000 lux (light intensity) , 0-9 s/m (wind speed)

It belonged to cool weather, there were less sunlight, not very wet and wind speed was low.

Page 19: Introduction We have studied woodland in form four but we have no chance to carry out investigations to apply our knowledge, we decided to make use of

Height of plants:According to the data we collected: Average height of tree: 8.728mLayer of tree: 7-14mAverage height of shrubs and saplings: 0.833m

Layer of shrubs and saplings:0.15-1.74mAverage crown width: 8m

The woodland may consist of 3 layers: young tree layer, shrubs and undergrowth.

Page 20: Introduction We have studied woodland in form four but we have no chance to carry out investigations to apply our knowledge, we decided to make use of

Average coverage:7.2%There is little undergrowth.

Only 2 species of insect were found without any other animals.

The biodiversity was low.

According to the reference:6.72% of soil water content 10.03% of organic matter6.5 pH11.6 ppm of nitrateyellowish red soil

It meant there was insufficient nutrient in the soil.

Page 22: Introduction We have studied woodland in form four but we have no chance to carry out investigations to apply our knowledge, we decided to make use of

Results and DiscussionWhy was there less amount of undergrowth? The lower humidity, the lower the water content

was. Also, the lower the temperature, the lower the decomposition was, thus the nutrient of the underground plant was insufficient.

In addition, sunlight was trapped and blocked by young tree layers so the amount of undergrowth was relatively less.

Page 23: Introduction We have studied woodland in form four but we have no chance to carry out investigations to apply our knowledge, we decided to make use of

Results and DiscussionWhy was there insufficient nutrient? There was no rain in those days. Sunlight was trapped by high tree layers, causing

low temperature to lower the decomposition of litter.

The texture of soil cannot store water well. The rate that the plant uptake nutrient was high.

Therefore, the water content and the amount of nitrate in the soil was low.

Page 24: Introduction We have studied woodland in form four but we have no chance to carry out investigations to apply our knowledge, we decided to make use of

Results and DiscussionWhy were there only 2 species? There were only trees, bamboo and shrubs with no

fruits which means there is no enough food for even small animals.

Also, there was near the study center, animals may be sensitive to people.

Decomposition was low, nutrient for plant was not enough, food from plant might not enough, it might not support the food chain which included small animals.

Conclusion

As the temperature, relative humidity, light intensity was so important to the growth of plant, maintaining the balance of micro-climate was crucial to woodland and the wildlife there.

Therefore, we should protect our wildlife through taking account these elements.

Recommendation

The location of woodland is near the study centre, if it can be far away from human activities, the investigation of our study will be much more accurate and it can show the reality of wildlife and woodland.
