Share the Love! Part 2 - February 9Children of all ages and their families are invited to make homemade valentines for all of the residents of Melrose Meadows Senior Living in Iowa City.

Heart Shaped Paper Animals - February 16Make special animal valentines! Use your imagination to create animal critters using paper hearts!

Snow Poppers! - February 23These snow poppers are a great boredom buster for the winter ahead. Kids will love having indoor snowball fights, all while keeping warm inside.

Special Storytimes:Storytime: The Snowy DaySaturday, February 1, 10:30am - 11:00am, Storytime RoomIn honor of Black History Month, join us for a storytime celebration of the classic children's book The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats. Published in 1962, The Snowy Day was the first mainstream picture book to feature an African-American protagonist. We'll read the book and enjoy some songs and rhymes celebrating the wonder of snow, plus watch a short film and even have an indoor snowball fight!

Preschool Stories & More: Tippi ToesThursday, February 6, 10:30am - 11:00am, Meeting Room AToday a special guest from Tippi Toes will offer a unique program of dance and creative movement. Tippi Toes provides children with a fun, positive and nurturing environment so they are able to experience the joys of dance, self-expression and movement. Classes are specifically designed to develop motor skills and body awareness while enhancing each child’s self-esteem.

Black History Short Film FestSaturday, February 8, 11:00am - 12:00pm, Storytime RoomAfter our special family storytime honoring black culture and history, we will host a Black History Month Short Film Fest featuring several important stories that have been made into animated features, including Voice of Freedom : Fannie Lou Hamer, Spirit of the Civil Rights Movement, Trombone Shorty, The Snowy Day, and more! Stop in for one short film or stay for them all. Popcorn will be served!

More than Just a GameTuesday, February 11, 12:00pm - 1:00pm, Meeting Room AIowa’s athletes have long impacted their teams, communities, and the sports they played, but African Americans did so while facing off against more than just the opposing team. They fought for the right to equal treatment on and off the field. Highlighting people such as Iowan and Olympian Thomas Hill, Drake University athlete Johnny Bright and his affect on the football helmet, and members of the Buxton Wonders, Iowa’s Negro Leagues team, this program is perfect for sports enthusiasts, history buffs, and the general public.

We will have all of the creative supplies needed and a bit of information about the residents to help you make a custom valentine from the heart that will be sure to make someone's Valentine's Day extra special this year!

After School Lego ClubTuesday, February 11 & 25, 4:00pm - 5:00pm, Storytime RoomLego Club is intended for school age kids, but younger siblings are allowed to tag along, we will have Duplos available as well as regular legos and baseboards. Each meeting will have a new optional creation theme, but builders can ignore the theme if they choose and build whatever they feel like. At the end of Lego Club, builders have the option to share with the group what they made.

Orchestra Iowa: Pied PiperThursday, February 13, 10:30am - 11:00am, Meeting Room AJoin Orchestra Iowa’s talented chamber ensembles as they introduce preschool-aged children to the instruments of the orchestra! Focused on fun and learning, Pied Piper Concerts offer children the opportunity to enjoy an up-close and personal chamber concert. This week we will be learning about the percussion section and sampling music performed by a percussion ensemble.

After School MinecraftThursday, February 13 & 27, 3:00pm - 4:30pm, Digital Media LabBuild peacefully in creative mode or fight to stay alive in survival mode. All abilities are welcome and group play is encouraged. This event is for all school age children (grades K-6). Registration required.

Special Access Browsing - Winter FunSaturday, February 15, 9:00am - 10:00am, Storytime Room, Teen Center, Children's RoomOn selected days, the Library will open one hour early for individuals with autism and their families to enjoy the library together in a neutral environment. We will be celebrating Winter today. We will have a winter themed party, including storytime, crafts, dancing, and a snowball fight! The Teen Room will be open for teens to play computer and video games. Therapy animals will also be on hand to wander through the library giving support and friendship. The library will also use natural lighting throughout the library to accommodate those with light sensitivity.

Winter Reading Finishers Hot Cocoa PartySaturday, February 15, 1:00pm - 4:00pm, Meeting Room ACongratulations on finishing the Winter Reading Program! You are all llAMAZING Readers! Finishers, please join us for a hot cocoa party, we will have crafts, a movie and a few surprises! For ages 3-12 who participated and finished the Reading is Llamazing Winter Reading Program. Please see the Children's Desk for questions.

Totally Tweens:Just for 3rd-6th graders!Put Your Stamp On It!Thursday, February 6, 3:00pm - 4:00pm, Storytime RoomUse your creativity to design and carve your own custom stamp! Using printmaking techniques, you'll then use your stamp to create a unique and decorative journal. Take your stamp and journal home after this workshop for writing or drawing! Amy Childress from the University of Iowa Center for the Book will guide us in exploring book arts through this project.

ScienTweensWednesday, February 19, 4:00pm - 5:00pm, Storytime RoomDon't just learn science - DO science with the Iowa City Science Booster Club! This monthly hands-on program for tweens gives you a chance to use cool scientific equipment to discover and explore the world around you. Learn about a different scientific concept or phenomenon each month and have your mind blown by fascinating facts.

Comics & Cookies: New KidThursday, February 20, 3:30pm - 4:30pm, Storytime RoomTweens are invited to a monthly meet-up to read and discuss graphic novels. We'll be talking about old favorites, reading new titles, and doing occasional activities around them. Plus, cookies will be served! Seventh grader Jordan Banks loves nothing more than drawing cartoons about his life. But instead of sending him to the art school of his dreams, his parents enroll him in a prestigious private school known for its academics, where Jordan is one of the few kids of color in his entire grade.
