Specific responsibilities of the Technical Director include:Grid Storage Management: To maintain an overarching view of the work in the storage areas in order to: Advise the project on issues and risks; to ensure that an appropriate set of milestones and metrics are developed against which this area can be monitored; to ensure that appropriate operational support is provided to the community; to facilitate sensible plans for maintenance and development of storage technologies; to review quarterly reports and ensure that they are received by the project manager. This area presently covers the DPM, DCache and CASTOR technologies but a weather eye should be kept on others such as STORM that may be deployed in the UK. The related posts directly funded by GridPP3 are Post C5: DPM Service support (Edinburgh) and Post C4/C6: Castor/DCache support (RAL). Grid Data Management: To maintain an overarching view of the work in the area of Data Management in order to: Advise the project on issues and risks; to ensure that an appropriate set of milestones and metrics are developed against which this area can be monitored; to ensure that appropriate operational support is provided to the community; to facilitate sensible plans for maintenance and development of Grid Data Management services within the constraints of the effort available but within the wider context of possible complementary work in ScotGrid; to review quarterly reports and ensure that they are received by the project manager. The related posts in this area are Posts C1 (Data Management Support, Glasgow) and NC31 (Metadata Transition, Glasgow). Grid Information and Monitoring: To ensure that the limited effort in this area is sensibly targeted at (a) providing support for R-GMA for the period it is required and (b) supporting and facilitating any transition to replacement technologies. The related post is Post C7 (R-GMA support, RAL). Workload Management Systems: To maintain an overview of the WLMS work at Imperial, consisting of WLMS release testing and RB logging, to advise the project on issues and risks; to ensure that an appropriate set of milestones and metrics are developed against which this area can be monitored; to ensure that appropriate operational support is provided to the community; to facilitate sensible plans for maintenance and development of WLMS services within the UK; to review quarterly reports and ensure that they are received by the project manager. The related posts in this area are Posts C15 (WLMS support - rather ill defined) and C19 (RB logging and WLMS support: this is 50% FTE until Mar 09).

Security: To maintain an overview of the Security work funded by GridPP3 in order to advise the project on issues and risk; to ensure that an appropriate set of milestones and metrics are developed against which these areas can be monitored; to ensure that appropriate operational support is provided to the community; to review the quarterly reports and ensure that they are received by the Project Manager. The related posts are: Post C20 (Operational Security at RAL); Post C21 (GridSite development); Post C22 (GridSite); Post NC28 (VOMS service at Manchester); Post C25 (Dave Kelsey – International liaison).

Networking: To maintain an overview of the Network issues in order to advice the project on issues and risks; to ensure that an appropriate set of milestones and metrics are developed against which this area can be monitored; to ensure that appropriate operational support is provided to the community; to review quarterly reports and ensure that they are received by the project manager. The related post in this area is Post C26 (Tasker).

To be discussed are who maintains the overview of the GOC posts (D7 to D10) and the 50% FTE Technical Documentation post: At first glance these too would report via the Technical Director. At second glance they’re not (yet).
