The world of Hackett

Darren Hill Managing Director Retail & Hospitality, ISG

ISG is proud to be the preferred contractor for the delivery of Hackett’s stores worldwide. As one of our key customers, we have developed an excellent relationship with Hackett and we look forward to continuing this as they expand their international presence. Our work with the retailer is a shining example of our commitment to, and the strength of, our working relationship with our customers.

One of the things that differentiates ISG is its renowned ability to manage large-scale schemes while also remaining focused on detailing, final touches and exquisite finishes – all fundamental elements of the Hackett brand. Our unique international footprint also allows us to focus on global portfolios as well as individual stores.

This book was first conceived at a time when we were delivering two flagship Hackett stores on opposite sides of the world – London and Singapore. With ISG offices in both locations and a mobile, international team dedicated to brilliant delivery, we have documented the journey from conception to final completion.

I am proud of both what has been achieved in delivering Hackett’s international portfolio of stores and our continuing relationship with one of the world’s leading fashion houses.

Established in 1979 by the charismatic Jeremy Hackett and Ashley Lloyd-Jennings, this London-based luxury menswear label is a very British affair. With its origins rooted in suiting and fine sportswear, Hackett has masculine appeal with a classic twist.

Hackett offers a sophisticated selection of clothing to men and boys, as well as tailoring, barbering, and shoe shining services. Their distinguished, elegant and unique English style is reflected in the design of Hackett’s stores.

The story of how Hackett was formed is almost as extraordinary as the brand itself. In 1979, Jeremy Hackett and Ashley Lloyd-Jennings set up a stall in Portobello, London selling second-hand traditional British men’s clothing. A couple of years later, they opened their first store on the New Kings Road, which saw them working with traditional manufacturers on new clothes. Their aim was to attract the sons of the archetypal Savile Row customer.

The 80s saw gradual expansion into Continental Europe, especially Spain. Since then, Hackett has continued to expand internationally and now operates in nearly 100 stores across many geographies, including Europe, Latin America, Asia, and the Middle East.

One of ISG’s most recent appointments for Hackett was the award-winning shop fit of their largest store to date, located on London’s Regent Street. The main objectives of the project were to provide a stunning, quintessentially British flagship store and a unique customer experience, which was successfully conveyed through the award-winning design.

The Regent Street store evokes the experience of walking into Jeremy Hackett’s English home – complete with antique pieces, vintage furniture, taxidermy, and an industrial steel staircase. The children’s department has a magical and theatrical ambience to it. It includes Aston Martin racing cars scaled for children and a large decorative tree which will be adapted with the seasons. For the more mature customers, a new gin bar by Beefeater 24 with a working stone fireplace has been created.

The flagship store is testament to the retailer’s talented design team and success as a premium fashion brand. Hackett continues to offer the customer a truly unique, exciting and inspiring shopping experience through their characteristically British stores.

Delivering consistency

Through close attention to detail, understanding the customers’ expectations and adopting a collaborative approach with retailers, ISG consistently delivers high quality projects - In order to achieve this we provide carefully detailed logistics plans and programmes to ensure the projects are completed on time and on budget – with exceptional levels of service.

The Team

ISG has built a dedicated core team for Hackett London that has evolved and grown over the years as the working partnership strengthened and the portfolio expanded. The core team is expert at consistently delivering Hackett stores to a high standard due to their understanding of the retailer, brand and expectations.

A signature of the Hackett brand is the use of bespoke joinery throughout its stores. ISG utilises an in-house joinery workshop in South England to provide the retailer with traditional, custom-made products such as cabinets, tabling, lighting and large-scale windows. It is standard practice at ISG to educate all new joinery employees in the Hackett brand, resulting in an experienced joinery team that understands that attention to detail is key to delivering successfully and consistently for the retailer.

The core ISG team for Hackett is based in the United Kingdom; however it delivers for the retailer all over the world. This ensures consistency of quality and delivery regardless of the location. In 2013 the team was flown to Singapore to assist in the successful delivery of the impressive Marina Bay Sands store. The joinery had to be adapted in the UK in order to use the materials available in Asia. However the skilled team ensured the end product still looked the same. ISG’s ability to deliver the brand consistently across the world was demonstrated well in Singapore, as well as many other locations, and is highly regarded by the retailer.

Logistics and programming

At ISG, we invest time to understand Hackett’s plans and expectations for each store. ISG’s approach to consistent delivery of each project on time and on budget is summarised below:

ISG is experienced at delivering projects on very tight programmes while still guaranteeing the agreed completion date. Hackett, Regent Street was delivered over a fast-track, 13-week programme.

ISG creates simple solutions to complex problems. On previous Hackett projects we implemented separate day and night teams to increase the amount of hours on site, which enabled a swifter project turnaround.

ISG ensures minimal disruption while working in live trading stores. By zoning the works through carefully planned phasing, we allow the store to maximise its sales and continue to trade as normal. Hackett, Sloane Street and Covent Garden are great examples of projects where ISG delivered in a discreet manner, with great sensitivity to the retailer, their customers and neighbours.

Through carefully considered programming, ISG is able to mobilise it’s core team in the most effective way. We worked with Hackett to develop overlapping programmes for the simultaneous delivery of the Spitalfields, Edinburgh and Covent Garden stores.

An interview with Michael Carey, the Director of Creative Services and Store Development, discussing the Regent Street store project and the relationship ISG and Hackett now hold.

No detail is too small

“We want the customer to have an emotional experience as they walk through the store.”

ISG: How is Hackett’s design intent reflected through the store environment?

Hackett’s brand identity includes a residential concept. When our customers step inside our stores we want them to feel as though they are walking into Jeremy Hackett’s house.

Architectural detail is of paramount importance. We have lots of metalwork, joinery, baseboards, and skirting. It is a lot of coordination between all the different elements within the design intent.

ISG: How do you want your customers to feel when they are shopping in your store?

We want the customer to have an emotional experience as they walk through the store and feel as comfortable as they would in their own homes. We like our collections to sit within their own environment in each room, which is why we style our rooms differently. The childrenswear room is playful, whimsical and tongue-in-cheek, whereas the Mayfair and Aston Martin rooms have a completely different look and feel. It’s important that our customers linger and take in the experience each space provides.

The detailing of our schemes is very important. We put a lot of investment and thought into the design intent, and our schemes are heavily joinery based. We hope that our customers understand that the quality of our shop fit relates to the quality of our products and brand. For a

long time, our stores looked the same and they didn’t really change. Now we constantly look at ways to move the concept along so that it reflects modern times.

ISG: What challenges does Hackett present to contractors such as ISG?

Programme and cost are often the biggest challenges of any scheme. We have to deliver a store within a certain timeframe, and there are sometimes factors that hinder this. The lease may not be signed, we may not have approval from the city, or there may be budget constraints or site discoveries. The challenge is finding a way around these issues to deliver the store on time and on budget.

ISG: How does ISG help you overcome these issues?

We have a great relationship with ISG. We have worked together on a lot of projects, so they understand our expectations. Having someone on board that gets our brand and site operations, like Leigh Jones, is fantastic. If there is a coordination issue he will fix it right away. We don’t have to produce another drawing or have a meeting about it. ISG understands the detailing, and that is very important to us. We enjoy collaborating with them. If we do not have the experience to execute an idea, they will try to find a way to deliver it.

“The detailing of our schemes is very important. We put a lot of investment and thought into the design intent, and our schemes are heavily joinery based.”

ISG: In terms of ideas that ISG has brought to the table, can you think of a specific project where there was a challenge that ISG helped you overcome?

The delivery of Hackett Regent Street was very challenging as it had a very tight programme. ISG came up with the great solution of having a night and day team that could work longer shifts, to achieve the design intent. The engineering of the staircase was a challenge in itself. To achieve final programme we began works, even though we didn’t have city approval or final sign off. ISG was great; it helped us understand the risks involved so we could make decisions to keep the programme moving.

“ISG was great; it helped us understand the risks involved so we could make decisions to keep the programme moving.”

ISG: How important is it that ISG acts as a partner in terms of your brand stewardship?

It is very important. The delivery of our store in Singapore was very successful due to the fact that ISG in Asia had delivered a project for us before. Having the UK local team fly out to help the Singapore team with coordination issues was fantastic.

ISG: What would be your message to new employees joining ISG?

It’s all in the detail.

“Having the UK local team fly out to help the Singapore team with coordination issues was fantastic.”

Brand stewardship

“We have a great relationship with ISG. We have worked together on numerous projects, so they understand our expectations. Having someone on board who understands our brand and site operations is fantastic.”Michael Carey Hackett Director of Creative Services and Store Development

ISG helps bring brands to life through constructed spaces. Retailers turn to us for expert advice in consistent brand management when designing and delivering their stores locally and internationally.

Hackett London’s brand identity is quintessentially British, yet each store is tailored to its location. Every store incorporates unique elements that articulate the culture of the country and the Hackett brand. At the Sloane Street store in London, ISG created a ‘gentleman’s area’ which included a barber shop for personal grooming and bespoke tailoring services. Within the Edinburgh store a library was incorporated at the rear of the premises. The room blends different elements that reflect a mix of nature, literature and clothing. Yet it is the Regent Street store that truly communicates the experience of walking into Jeremy Hackett’s English home through the incorporation of antique pieces, vintage furniture, and taxidermy. Such pieces are integral to the brand identity and enhancement of this elegant atmosphere.

At the Regent Street store, Hackett and ISG explored the articulation of the brand further by giving each room a different feel. The children’s department has a truly theatrical and magical ambience which is enhanced by a commanding decorative tree at its center designed by the team from the Harry Potter films. The Beefeater 24 gin bar, complete with granite worktops, antique brass grills and a working stone fireplace is adjacent to the tailoring service department, and both encourage a relaxing atmosphere and an oasis of calm from the bustling high street below. This flagship store is testament to Hackett’s success as a premium fashion retailer and ISG’s ability to communicate their brand.

Customer service

The relationship between ISG and Hackett has grown over time. Trust has been built between customer and shopfitter and the teams work very well together. Hackett engages ISG to develop it’s design and seek advice on feasibility. In turn, ISG ensures time and resources are always made available to accommodate the retailer’s requests, no matter how big or small. This may mean assisting with a local supply chain problem on a public holiday, or flying the ISG joinery team to Singapore to ensure that the brand is articulated consistently. Going the extra mile to assist the customer is key to building working relationships that improve the customer experience.

“When a partner intrinsically understands your business and target market, the relationship becomes far more fruitful. It opens up exciting opportunities to add value and fully utilises the local market knowledge and experience of this partner. This is why we value our relationship with ISG so highly. ISG is agile, informed and passionate about our portfolio wherever they are engaged around the world.”

Customer service

Understanding customer’s requirements

As a luxury retailer, emphasis is placed on delivering quality for Hackett London. It is important to create highly resilient retail spaces that showcase the retailer’s product range, while offering a unique shopping experience for it’s customers. The key factors the ISG delivery team consider for each project is:

Delivering the scheme to budget – using an integrated design and procurement process. This delivers competitively procured packages in very tight timescales, quickly achieving value and cost certainty.

Meeting programme – guaranteeing project completion to the set date and providing workable alternatives, such as zoning and phasing works, to enable trading to continue while the project is delivered.

Attention to detail – ensuring consistent quality is delivered throughout each and every store.

Ensuring business continuity for all – utilising a logistics strategy to avoid causing any disruption to the store and neighbouring businesses, including deliveries and waste removal.

Communicating as one – creating a tight-knit team to understand and implement Hackett’s design concept.

Using an innovative approach to all aspects of construction – focusing on solutions and ideas from procurement to engaging with the end users.

Building an exemplar project for Hackett each and every time – using a resilient construction programme that guarantees quality.

Delivering Absolute Completion – a structured approach to ensure that all aspects of the project are actioned and signed off to the highest standard with the consulting team.

Dedication to detail is a core ISG value. We take care over our work and focus on every detail in order to drive exceptional quality.Over 100 pieces of joinery produced in-house

Joinery is a main component of Hackett London’s store design and is consistent from store-to-store. As a longstanding customer, ISG is familiar with Hackett’s joinery requirements and produces a number of items as standard across their projects.

Typically, over 100 pieces are manufactured in-house at ISG’s joinery facility in South England. The Regent Street store includes the bespoke production of a table fitted with an iPad for the children’s department area as well as a number of large–scale mirrors - specially antiqued in-house. The team also created components for Hackett’s Gin Bar, featuring granite worktops and antique brass grills. In addition, tailor units were produced for the Mayfair suiting area.

ISG followed the design process from concept to completion, and worked closely with Hackett to develop the design intent. From the drawings supplied by Hackett’s design team, ISG advised on feasibility and the setting out of a number of furniture pieces using computer-aided design.

One of the most challenging factors identified within the design was the construction of the store’s staircase. This bespoke feature is the focalpoint of the Regent Street store and provides customers with direct access to the three retail floors.

Hackett approached the ISG team with the design concept for the staircase. The impressive three-storey structure was designed to have an impact on the retail customer, with an industrial look and decorative elements including ‘Hackett’ etched within the risers. Its complex details required specialist contractors with the capability and experience to achieve the required result safely within the structural limitations of the building.

ISG engaged the services of an experienced steelwork contractor. Their senior design engineer collaborated with ISG and Hackett’s head designer to discuss the design intent, and what could be realistically achieved. Both design teams reviewed various scenarios to the agreed budget and discovered new ideas for further development.

The functionality of the design interface, fixing within the joinery panels and bespoke items were other important elements taken into consideration. ISG produced the initial designs using the latest 3D modelling software. This provided views of the staircase from different angles, which would otherwise be difficult to grasp in 2D.

The complex delivery of a bespoke staircase

Page 17: ISG and Hackett: an award-winning combination/media/files/brochures/... · Hackett London is a luxury men’s clothing brand founded in 1979 by Jeremy Hackett and Ashley Lloyd-Jennings

Following regular collaborative meetings with Hackett, the final concept was taken forward. A structural engineer was appointed to advise on the structural aspects and made necessary adjustments to negate vibration and swaying that is common with such a large structure.

Once all the structural calculations were approved the designs were finalised, agreed and put into manufacture. The project’s already tight programme became even more challenging as new techniques were required to create some of the fabricated stair items. The site installation was also a challenge due to the sheer size of the

staircase and its central position within the busy site. This was overcome by good planning and by phasing the installation. All heavy lifting was planned for specific times of the day to prevent disruption to the site.

The decorative nature of the handrail follows a traditional wreathed style, which is not widely produced due to the intense labour it demands. ISG sourced a stair rail specialist based in Scotland that uses modern equipment to retain traditional skills. An engineer was sent to survey the stair during the installation period and measurements were taken using state-of-the-art

GPS equipment to transfer the handrail shape into a 3D image.

This information was then programmed into their 5 axis CNC machinery that shaped the timber to the exact measurements taken from the site. It also profiled the outer face to Hackett’s bespoke design. Once complete, the installation engineers fitted the handrail to the metalwork rails and it was hand-stained and polished to the required finish. This created a seamless and continuous handrail from the top to the bottom of the staircase.

The added value

Working with a shopfitter that is familiar with Hackett’s brand ensures consistency throughout the design and fit out process. Hackett trusts ISG to develop the design and advise on its feasibility as demonstrated with the staircase in the Regent Street store.

With every store delivered, ISG strives to ensure that the final result not only exceeds Hackett’s original expectations but is also within budget. We are passionate about our work and seeing Hackett’s concept designs realised through the constructed retail space. The continued appointment of ISG by Hackett is testament to the working relationship that has been formed and we continue to work on projects together all over the world.

ISG and Hackett: see the people behind the success story

Scan the QR code to the right to view a video detailing the unique relationship between Hackett and ISG.

In October 2013, Hackett partnered with ISG for the fit out of the brand’s latest flagship and their largest store to date, on Regent Street in London. This store is one of the most impressive and imposing outlets on one of the city’s leading retail destinations. This unique and innovative project secured two wins at the National Association of Shopfitters (NAS) Design Partnership Awards in 2014, winning both ‘The Synecore Ltd Retail Award’ and the top honour of ‘Grande Prix’ winner award.

Regent Street store case study

With the opportunity to redefine its presence on one of London’s best-known high streets, Hackett devised a new store concept that encapsulated its brand spirit. ISG provided the retailer with a unique shopping experience for their customers, as well as a comfortable working environment for its staff.

This store is one of the most impressive and imposing outlets on one of the city’s leading retail destinations.
