Welcome to Issue23 of The Wishaw HUB. Are you aware that we’re fast approaching our first birthday? I was shocked to notice this too and clearly proves that time does seem to fly when you’re having fun. On Friday the 20th of August we launched our publication; giving our community the opportunity to have their positive voices heard over and above the regular doom and
gloom that seems to dominate our national and local press. When I look back at that first issue, I remember quoting someone who said “Are you sure you can find a positive story in Wish’ae?”. And now, almost a year later, with
an inbox full of stories that people want to share, not only do I get to boast about how easy it was to find positivity, but also that we now have stories flooding in from all our surrounding towns and villages who have also embraced The Wishaw HUB as their publication and voice!
No longer do the unsung heroes find their stories either being ignored by other newspapers or squeezed in whenever it’s a quiet news week. We are YOUR paper and I’d just like to thank everyone for their support.
This week, why not check out the new thrift shop that’s opened in Shotts, Sandra’s Bits ‘n’ Bobs, raising funds for CHAS, the various charity nights held in the Camby Club and the photograph of a mini-tornado spotted above Allanton in Shotts.
Now, back to the plans for our first birthday party! Enjoy the read.

LANARKSHIRE’S community Macmillan
nursing team has paid tribute to the generosity of cancer patients and their families who have helped improve the lives of others.
Thanks to big-hearted donations, the Macmillan team have been able to purchase additional equipment worth more than £7000 – including portable nebulisers and pressure relieving mattresses. This kit ensures patients who have life-limiting illnesses can be made more comfortable when in their own homes.
Jan Smith, Macmillan nurse
coordinator for Lanarkshire, said: “We’re very grateful for all the donations we receive which can be used to benefit patients with cancer who are being cared for in the community. The portable nebulisers and press relieving mattresses can make a big difference to people and being able to buy them means we can deliver them quickly to patients, rather than having to order them in.
“On behalf of the Lanarkshire Macmillan nursing team I’d like to thank everyone who has made these donations and to let
them know they’ve made a difference to the lives of people with cancer.”
Jan continued: “Patients who have to spend a lot of time in bed are prone to pressure sores, but these mattresses can help prevent these sores and so avoid further pain and discomfort. Because they can be placed on top of a normal bed they also enable the patient to continue to share their own bed with their partners which is also very important to people. The portable nebulisers make a huge difference to patients with breathing difficulties as
they can use these themselves to administer their medicines at home rather than having to wait to see a nurse or go to a healthcare facility.”
The Macmillan nursing team, which is based at Udston Hospital, covers the whole of Lanarkshire.
Thanks to the kind donations made by cancer patients and their families the team has been able to purchase 15 portable nebulisers, 30 mattresses, three portable suction machines and one specialise nebuliser, worth £3000, for patients with head and neck cancer.
Rotary Club Updateby Willie Talbot
Rotarian Paul Begley was a last minute replacement speaker at last Thursdays meeting of the Rotary Club of Motherwell
& Wishaw. Paul let members know of his experiences on his recent cruise
on the Queen Mary 2 from New York to Southampton. This was Paul's first cruise and he certainly enjoyed it to the extent that he and his wife have agreed to embark on another cruise in the near future.
Paul also spoke on the forthcoming Pigeon Derby which would be held over the next 6 weeks and he reminded his fellow Rotarians of his need for prizes for the weekly Pigeon draw. Rotarian Des Donnelly was the winner of the weekly bonus ball.
Cecil Bar Mixed Darts Charity Doubles
The New Cecil Bar is holding a mixed darts charity doubles fun day on Saturday 30th July in aid of Yorkhill Hospital.
Local shops are donating items to be used as raffle prizes on the night as well as the aim of the evening being to purchase a “Tree of Hope” supplied by Mr Andrew Roddie of B3 Signs at a cost of £1,500. When the tree is erected it will continue to generate money for years to come.
Doors open at 11am and to enter the darts tournament costs £5 per person, however all further donations are welcome with every penny donated going to the charity.
Everyone is welcome to join in the fun or feel free to sponsor a player. It is hoped that with the help of the local shops and the Wishaw Community, the fundraising target will be achievable and both Real Radio and The Wishaw HUB will cover the event itself.

Fun Day at Belhaven Parkbridges and basket swings.
Whether you are 3 or 13 years old there is something there to challenging you and there is even a dinosaur skeleton.
Having consulted with local children and the Friends of Belhaven Park group, the newly completed new outdoor play and high activity facility was unveiled by Councillor Love who said ““It’s great to have such a big play facility in the town park to go along side the other park improvements of recent years. It’s just what the children and families of Wishaw needed.”
Alongside the facilities provided by North Lanarkshire Council, the joining of forces from Central Wishaw and Coltness Community Council’s also provided bouncy castles, inflatable assault courses and many interesting stalls for the local children to have their faces painted, make giant bubbles and take part in various arts and crafts as well as parachute games.
Councillor Sam Love was keen to highlight that an extra £50,000 investment
from Waste Recycling Environmental (WREN) fund meant the council achieved such a large new play area within Belhaven.
Managing director of WREN, Peter Cox said: “The Belhaven Park play area will provide a fantastic space for local people to get outdoors and have some fun. We are delighted to support North Lanarkshire council to make this happen.”

Cold Cot Donated To Wishaw General
A COUPLE who suffered the unimaginable pain of their
first child being born stillborn hope their gift to Wishaw General’s maternity unit can help others in a similar situation.
Gavin and Kirstie Moir presented the unit with a cold cot – which helps preserve stillborn babies to provide families more time to spend with their lost children.
In February 2010 Kirstie gave birth to a stillborn baby boy, Fraser Alexander Moir. Thankfully the Bellshill couple recently celebrated the birth of their baby son Euan but they wanted to do something to help those who have to suffer a stillborn birth.
Gavin said: “The cot is something we hope is never used but unfortunately we know that is unlikely. The cot will allow parents of stillborn babies to have more
time to say goodbye. Kirstie said: “Gavin and I felt our world had fallen apart when we realised our wee boy would never go home with us and live life like we had dreamed. Unfortunately as there were some complications with my labour, Fraser was delivered six days after we knew his wee heart was no longer beating. This had a dramatic effect on his body and skin meaning that when he was exposed to our world and the heat in the hospital, we didn't get much time to hold our wee angel.
“We didn’t want other parents in similar circumstances to have this limited time with their babies and so decided to raise funds, with the support of national Stillbirth and Neonatal Death Charity, SANDS, in order to purchase a cold cot for Wishaw’s maternity unit in Fraser’s memory.” Gavin and Kirstie raised
more than £3000 for the cold cot through a charity night they held in Motherwell. Gavin said: “I’d like to thank all our friends, families and local businesses who supported us and donated prizes to allow us to raise this money.”
Wishaw General’s maternity unit’s nursery nurse June Miller made drapes for the cot and on behalf of all the staff women’s services manager Evelyn Frame thanked Gavin and Kirstie. Evelyn said: “I also hope the cot is something that we never have to use but we are very grateful for this donation.
The sad reality is stillbirths do happen and cold cots give families the opportunity to spend as much time as possible with their babies. On behalf of everyone in the unit I would like to thank Gavin and Kirstie for their kind donation.”
Charity Night In Aid Of SANDS and Wishaw GeneralLocal girl Kelly Alexander held a charity night
on Friday 15th July in the Cambusnethan Club in aid of Ward 24 at Wishaw General Hospital and Stillbirth and Neonatal Death charity, SANDS.
Following the loss of her niece Mia McNally 1 year ago, her family got together to raise money and awareness for this worthwhile cause.
With a well attended event of over 150 people enjoyed the live bands, DJ and numerous raffles prizes, brave males were also subjected to sponsored waxings that raised a grand total of over £1,500.
Kelly told The Wishaw HUB “The subject of stillbirth and cot death always seems such a taboo subject that most people shy away from it, so we’re doing our best to raise both money and awareness. I’d like to pass on a huge debt of gratitude to the shops in Wishaw and Carluke for the wondering raffle prize donations and to everyone who attended on the night helping us raise so much money which will be split between SANDS and Ward 24 at Wishaw General”

New Shotts Charity Shop Supports CHASShotts welcomed the launch
of a new charity thrift shop to the main street as “Sandra’s Bits ‘n’ Bobs” opened on Station Road.
Started by local woman Tricia Allison in memory of her mother-in-law Sandra, Tricia hopes to raise funds by donating 30% of all profits made to the Children’s Hospice Association Scotland, CHAS.
Selling second hand clothing, bric-a-brac, jewellery and furniture, the shop already has grand plans for expansion and extending their range and
hopes to start selling electrical goods later in the year.
Tricia told The Wishaw HUB “I’ve always been keen to help charitable groups and I’m immensely proud to be able to help the younger generation via CHAS. I’d just like to thank the community for embracing the shop, what it stands for and thank everyone for their continued support”.
CHAS run two children’s hospices in Scotland, Rachel House in Kinross and Robin House in Balloch and they support over 250 families per
year. All services are free and are funded mainly through the generosity of the many supporters who help the charity to raise over £6 million needed each year to provide these vital hospice services.
Nicola Gunn, CHAS Fundraiser for West of Scotland said “We would like to say a huge thank you to Tricia for choosing to support CHAS through her shop Sandra’s Bits ‘n’ Bobs. The 30% of sales that Sandra has chosen to donate will make such a big difference here at CHAS and will help us
to keep on providing the best possible care to the children and families who use our services. We really hope the community of Shotts get behind Sandra and pop down to grab a bargain!”
The shop is only going to be manned by volunteers, so if you would like to contribute please contact Tricia direct. She would also like to welcome any donations in the form of stock which can also be collected direct from your home. For further information, please call 07591 805 304.
Mini-Tornado Spotted Over Shotts
The early stages of a tornado forming were caught on camera by local girl Carrie Walker
above Allanton in Shotts. Having been spotted from her Piper’s Course home window in Shotts by boyfriend Jon Jon Watt around 5.45pm on Monday 11th July, he asked Carrie to capture it on camera.
Surprisingly Britain is quite a hotspot with around 100 tornadoes touching down in the UK every year, although only around 20 to 30 are nor-mally reported with most going unnoticed as they lack the severity of the “twisters” experienced by the United States.
Jon Jon, who originally spotted the cloud formation told The Wishaw HUB “I’m a great fan of all the tornado spotting programmes on the TV, so gathered something was brewing with all the dark clouds against the lighter clouds in the background, but couldn’t quite believe what I was seeing when the funnel started to drop. It lasted around 3 or 4 minutes, but by the time we grabbed the camera the funnel had begun to rise back into the clouds and before we knew it, it was gone. Thankfully we managed to catch the tail end on camera and a few friends on Facebook also com-mented they saw too”.
Photographer Carrie told The Wishaw HUB “I was absolutely amazed - I’d never seen anything quite like it before”.
“Road Injuries Down 69%” Claim North Lanarkshire CouncilAccording to figures
released by North Lanarkshire Council, personal injury accidents on our towns roads are down by 69% following improvements made at 25 of the worst locations in the region.
Following 3 years of monitoring, work has been carried out to improve road safety; as a result of this work, the number of personal injury accidents has reduced from 178 to 55. And in a number of other locations, where road safety works have been completed but the three year monitoring time is not yet finished, are also showing similar reductions in accidents.
Wishaw’s Stewarton Street at Greenhead Road, Main Street at Belhaven Terrace, Kirk Road at Greenhead Road and Waverley Road at Ryde Road have all been treated as accident cluster sites.
North Lanarkshire council claim this could be saving up
to 16 times the money spent dealing with post accident incidents, including health services, roads, police and insurance services.
"This is excellent news for pedestrians and drivers in North Lanarkshire," said Councillor James Coyle, Convener of Planning and Transportation. "Community safety is one of our key priorities and these figures show our work is delivering real results. I would also like to thank the public who have contributed significantly to these results by acting responsibly when they are travelling and helped reduce the number of people injured on our roads by 69%.”
From this accident database, the council identified 12 sites with the highest number of injury accidents between January 2008 and December 2010. These sites will now be prioritised for work to help improve road safety.

Ravenscraig Zumbathon to Raise Money for SamaritansFollowing the success of the Zumbathon
in the Park 2011 organised by Nicole Hill, covered in the previous edition of The Wishaw HUB, fellow Zumba fitness instructor Emma Dunlop is organising a similar mass Zumbathon dance event in Ravenscraig Sports Facility in September that will be sponsored by suicide prevention group ‘Choose Life’.
The event on Sunday 11th September will help raise funds for The Samaritans and will feature Zumba instructors from all over Scotland and promises to be an exciting Latin themed dance party.
Timed to coincide with the final day of Suicide Prevention Week in Scotland, The Samaritans is a confidential emotional support service for anyone in the UK and Ireland. The service is available 24 hours
a day for people who are experiencing feelings of distress or despair, including those which may lead to suicide.
Around 2 people take their own lives every day in Scotland. In 2009, 746 people died by suicide, and it is the leading cause of death in 18-34 year olds. North Lanarkshire had the 4th highest suicide rate in Scotland in 2009, with approximately one person every week taking their own life.
Organiser Emma Dunlop told The Wishaw HUB “It is through the Zumba Fitness program that promotes health, wellbeing and community, that we can raise awareness and challenge the stigma of suicide and mental health. We are very passionate about the cause and are so excited about organising a positive and
enlightening event- exercise, keeping fit, being well, speaking with others, meeting new people, working together and being creative can give someone a very valid reason to live life fully, and a Zumbathon charity event in my opinion is the way to communicate this message. Although suicide can be a sad subject, it is very real and we want to inject the word 'suicide' into our vocabulary so that we can all start helping the people closest to us who may be struggling.”
Registration will take place from 10.30am on the day with the first dances commencing at 11am (Age 16 and over). For further information, or to purchase tickets priced at £10 each, please contact Emma Dunlop at [email protected]
Mecca Bingo Raise £1,300 for Marie CurieWishaw’s Mecca Bingo
staff Belinda Holmes and Jason Lawson organised a well attended fundraiser in The Camby Club on the 1st July in aid of Mecca Bingo UK’s chosen charity Marie Curie.
Local businesses, bingo staff, family and friends all helped out by donating raffles prizes with the grand prize being a 40inch Flat Screen TV purchased using door sale revenue and raising a grand total of over £1,300 pounds for the charity which provide end of life care to terminally ill patients in their own homes, or in one of their nine hospices in the UK.
“Not only was this a great way to raise money for Marie Curie, but it’s also a great way to get people in the community together” Belinda told The Wishaw HUB “I’m really appreciative to the local shops and staff who donated prizes and to all customers, family and friends for turning up on the night and supporting a wonderful cause. I’d also like to thank Julie, Gennelle
and Adele for their fantastic help on the night”.
Karen Milne, Community Fundraiser for Marie Curie was keen to pass on her thanks and said “We’re delighted that Mecca Bingo Wishaw had such a successful evening;
our sincere thanks and gratitude go to everyone who was involved. It costs about £20 per hour to care for a Lanarkshire patient in their own home, so this money will provide many hours of nursing care to local patients and their
families.””Mecca Bingo run various
fund raisers throughout the year including bake sales, bring and buy’s and the famous Shuggies Huggies where customers are able to purchase a ‘Hug from Shug’ for £1.

John Pentland – Drop the charge for volunteeringMotherwell and Wishaw MSP John Pentland is calling on
the Scottish Government to show their commitment to volunteering by dropping charges that have been introduced for Disclosure Scotland checks.
Until recently, all volunteers could get their disclosure checks done for free through the Central Registered Body in Scotland (CRBS). However, since the Protecting Vulnerable Groups Scheme (PVG) was introduced, only people working with vulnerable groups are eligible for free checks, and everybody else must pay £25 or more.
John Pentland said “For organisations who regularly recruit large numbers of volunteers, £25 a time can add up to a large bill. One local organisation which supplies transport using volunteer drivers for cancer patients is now having to find the extra money on top of the big hike in fuel charges.
“If they want to encourage people to volunteer, the Scottish Government should drop these charges now. I have written to the Cabinet Secretary Kenny MacAskill, asking him to reconsider and make the checks free for all volunteers.”

NEWMAINS……Past and PresentIn the next few issues of the Wishaw Hub, we are going to be running a special feature
entitled “…Past and Present” where we will be looking closely at local towns and villages in Lanarkshire to highlight why these places are the real HUB of Lanarkshire
We hope to show that in days gone by, the Main Street of any town was ‘the hub’ of the community. It was the place where we would all go to shop, where we picked up some cakes from the local baker, and sourced juicy steaks for dinner from the local butcher. The Main Street was the local business directory – where everything you needed was easily found. Sadly however, the impact of large shopping malls and supermarkets has undoubtedly affected our ‘Main Street’ so it is vitally important in any community that we do not lose our Main Street.
To kick-off we have selected Newmains as the first of many local areas. The Village of Newmains, arguably a town in its own right, was formerly a mining community. Initially built
by Lord Belhaven in the 19th century to house the workers of his nearby Coltness Ironworks, Newmains was actually built as a ‘dry’ town, and Lord Belhaven’s clean-cut, sober workers were known as some of the most productive in the Glasgow Iron and Steel Company.
In 1882-4, Frances Groome’s Ordnance Gazetteer of Scotland described Newmains like this: “Newmains, a small town in Cainbusnethan parish, Lanarkshire, on the cross-railway from Morningside to Holytown, adjacent to the Coltness Ironworks, 2 miles ENE of Wishaw, and 6 by railway SE of Holytown. Standing amid a rich mineral tract, and inhabited chiefly by miners and ironworkers, it has a post office, with money order, savings’ bank, and telegraph
departments, a railway station, the Coltness memorial quoad sacra church (1878), St Bridget’s Roman Catholic church (1871; 300 sittings), a Roman Catholic school, and an elegant edifice, erected by the Coltness Ironworks Company at a cost of £3000, to serve as both a school and a chapel of ease. ...”The village had a bus depot of the McKindless Group from 1987 until its closure in February 2010. An open-cast coal mine is still located at nearby Morningside. And the Coltness works survived until 2004 as a railway sleeper manufacturing facility for Tarmac.
Newmains has had a local football team since the 1800’s, the current Newmains United Community Football Club play in the Central Division Two of the Scottish Junior
Football Association. Formed in 2006 their home ground is at Victoria Park, Overtown Road, Newmains, with a capacity of 2,300. Historically, there have been
several teams playing in Newmains, such as Newmains Thistle, Newmains Shamrock, Newmains Rovers, Newmains, Newmains Victoria, Newmains Juniors. Newmains Thistle became the first ever Junior League champions in 1891-92.
Two notable figures who reached international stardom and hailed from Newmains include a famous Scottish footballer, Andrew Nesbit Wilson (1896–1973) and world famous Chemist Dr I Allan Brownlie (1922-2008) . Newmains is served by three primary schools, Newmains Primary and Nursery, St Brigid’s Primary, and Morningside Primary. Then of course there is the local Newmains Library, Newmains & District Community
Centre, Newmains Health Centre and a dentists surgery.
Like other Main Streets, Newmains Main Street is relied upon by many of the local residents for the services on hand. The array of shops include butchers, hairdressing salons, hotfood takeaways, restaurants, greengrocers, newsagents, a coffee shop, solicitors, a bookmaker, pet shop
and a local gym.So please, show support for
your local Main Street and help in keeping the community vibrant.

FOCUS RS –CAN IT REALLY SHIFT ?Ford have long had the pedigree
of producing some fast ‘normal’ cars. If you look back through their history, Ford provided us with some real gems. Take the Escort RS2000 and Fiesta RS1800 of the 1990s for example as little more than warmed-up versions of existing models. Subtle changes in and around the cars differentiated them from the normal ones, but that was about it…. Back in 2002 when Ford launched the first Focus RS, they were launching to the world something slightly different Focus. The new Focus RS was a limited-run, thoroughly re-engineered, driver-focused machine. This new-generation Focus RS appears to follow in much the same vein; whether physically with its wider tracks and bespoke bodywork, or on paper with 300bhp and a 163mph top speed, right now the new Focus RS is the hottest of hatches. PerformanceWith a 300bhp 2.5-litre five-cylinder engine under the bonnet, the RS's power output certainly hasn't been capped. The RS practically explodes off the mark, hitting 62mph in just 5.7 seconds and it doesn't give up the ghost until it reaches 163mph. Giving it just the sort of performance that you would expect from a high
performance Ford. • Quality&ReliabilityThe RS combines good-quality materials with solid build. The basic mechanicals are well proven and have all been strengthened to cope with the car's mammoth power. The Focus is generally a reliable car with no major issues having been reported and the RS should be no different. • Safety&SecurityElectronic stability control is standard, along with driver and passenger front airbags, side curtain 'bags and seatbelt pre-tensioners, all of which earn the same five-star Euro NCAP crash test rating as the rest of the Focus range. The RS also has Ford's Passive Anti-Theft System immobilizer and remote central locking with perimeter alarm. • BehindTheWheelThe RS has carbonfibre panels, three dashboard-mounted dials and a leather-clad RS steering wheel. The most eye-catching items, however, are the Recaro sports seats, which feature side supports trimmed to match the bodywork. The seats provide fantastic support for your ribcage and are wide enough at the shoulder to give plenty of freedom when you're sawing away at the wheel.• Space&PracticalityThe slim-backed Recaros make it
relatively easy for passengers to slide into the rear of the RS. Also, the roominess and versatility that's such an essential part of the standard Focus hasn't been compromised. The boot is just as big, too, and the rear seats still split and fold. • EquipmentPretty much everything you'd expect is standard, including: air-conditioning, a six CD player with DAB radio, keyless ignition with starter button, an alarm and a heated windscreen. Everything you need to get you from A to B quickly. However, if you want some extra comfort, you can upgrade with a £1500 luxury pack, which adds climate control and a DVD navigation system with seven-inch touchscreen.OnTheRoadAt town speeds, and sometimes at sub-50mph speeds on really poor B-roads, the ride is firm, but the damping is excellent and with speed the ride calms down significantly. And when the roads get really tough the body control is absolutely first rate.Overall, the RS should be an easy car to live with, the refined engine and tall sixth gear making light work of long-distance cruising.Runningcosts (group 19 insurance) could be more of an issue, although the RS returned a
respectable average of 24.8mpg (better than the ST); that can easily drop to single figures, though. A 62-litre tank helps boost the range. ConclusionCosting over £25,000, it is a lot to pay for a Focus. Although to others it’s exceptional value, considering the performance on offer and the depth of chassis engineering, especially next to an Impreza STi or Evo X. What’s more, strong demand and tight (if not limited) supply should keep residuals strong.

THE BEST JOB IN THE WORLD…EVERImagine a job where you get paid lots of money for doing very, very little. A job where no matter how badly youperform, you still get paid. And if you continue to under- perform, it’s your boss who gets blamed and sacked, and not you.Imagine a job where you can be banned from driving, caught using drugs, or arrested for duffing up someone in a pub, and your employer will stick by you no matter what. They’ll even let you come to work wearing an electronic tag.Imagine a job where no matter how much of a scumbag you are, people will forgive you and treat you like you’re thebest thing since toilet paper. Yes folks, I’m talking about footballers. They really, really sicken me. Not just with their weekly wages which exceed the gross national product of Greece, or their constant crimes which seem to pass with impunity.I’m fed up with them not trying
a leg on the park, cheating the fans, and still getting paid for it.If I behaved like them, I’d be selling the Big Issue, or in Barlinne. They protest that their £20k per week isn’t
enough, but never say “Here’s some of my wages back for that stupid penalty I conceded that cost us the game”.It’s time FIFA clamped down on these spoilt children. Capped their wages, established a code of conduct for them, and IQ tested them before allowing them to kick a ball. Most of all, their managers should be given the power to sack them for being rubbish. Suddenly they’d
be accountable and would have to face up to reality. Then the world as we know it would be a better place.
GANGSTERSI read a report that criminal gangs are suffering a shortage of weapons, and as a result have to borrow off each other. I can just imagine the conversations: “Hi Jeff, could I please borrow your pistol for a wee job I have on?”“No. You still haven’t returned my rifle yet, and when you gave me back my shotgun the barrel was missing”Does this mean that the police are winning the war on gun crime? I certainly hope so. I spoke to an American friend about the matter, and his solution on gun crime is that we should all be armed, now. When I asked for an explanation, he replied “We don’t get many stabbings in the US”. Yes, that’s because they have guns instead you maniac. If a ned pulls a knife on me, I can shout “Look, free Buckfast!”, and make a run for
it whilst he is distracted. If he has a gun, I’d best run in a zig-zag formation and hope for the best. Gun laws save lives. End of.
TWITTERIf you are unaware of what Twitter is, it is a website which simply asks the question “What are you doing?”You can then update it with your movements as often as you
please. There is a word for someone who wants to know your movements all the time. And
that word is “Stalker”.Therefore folks I implore you, do not go on this site and follow lives of celebrities. Your own life is far more important. And please don’t set up your own Twitter site. It will only disappoint you when nobody cares what you’re doing.
BACK AFTER A LONGABSENCEJust before the last edition of Q’s Views was published, it was announced that Lada would be manufacturing cars once more.Had the news got to me before The Hub went to print, I would have had an absolute field day.If you don’t remember Ladas or simply haven’t heard of them, let me explain. The Lada Riva
was a Russian built car of the 1980’s, and could be compared to iconic cars of that era such
as the Golf GTi or Ford Escort XR3i.Yes, compared to such iconic cars it was an absolute shed. Whilst the GTi or XR3i could go from 0-60mph in 10 seconds, the Lada could manage 0-10mph in 60 seconds. If you remember this car, you’ll remember how bad it was, and that jakies would often get alongside Lada drivers at traffic lights and shout abuse at them. What you may not know is that the owner of a Lada dealership got wise to this, and drove around in a Lada Riva with a Cosworth engine hidden underneath the bonnet. The jakies would get alongside him and dish out abuse, only to be astonished when the lights
turned to green and a car wth 1960’s technology beat them in a drag race. The very next day they’d get themselves down to his dealership to enquire about trading in their pimped up rides for what they thought was an affordable Russian supercar.I still giggle when I think of gullible jakies in their Lada Rivas trying to challenge GTi drivers to a race. Or the time my
neighbour reported that his Lada had been stolen, and the police refused to believe him.

TrappedIt was a cold, but dry afternoon. I was standing all alone in an empty car park that lay next to a deep, dark river. I could hear the strong waves pounding against the big rocks that sat by the shore. I was shivering, my toes were frozen and my nose was red. I ran towards an arched door that led into a gigantic castle hall. The place looked like it hadn’t been used for hundreds of years, suddenly I heard a loud bang, the big arched door had closed, and I was trapped inside all alone. The walls were damp and the carpet was curled up from the edges because it hadn’t been walked on for so long it had lost all of its life. My heart was pounding so hard it felt like it was going to fall out of my stomach.I tried to shout for help but every time I called no one answered, I could hear faint hooting noises in the distance
which scared me even more. I saw a large wooden cupboard sitting in one of the corners, I quickly skimmed through many ideas of what could be in the cupboard, I couldn’t think of anything positive only negative thoughts. I eventually opened one of the large wooden doors. The handle was cold and rusty. As I opened the door I could hear my conscious saying ‘stop don’t do it’ but that didn’t stop me. I yanked open the door and found a golden, it was glowing and shining so bright I could barely open my eyes to see it. I grabbed the key and ran toward the big door. The key
started dragging me across the dusty carpet until it jumped out of my hand and pushed itself into the key hole. The door had slammed open. At first I screamed so loud my eardrums were going to burst but then I saw my family standing at the door waiting for me, my heart was back at its normal speed and I had a great big smile on my face. I got up and went over to everyone to give them a great big hug. My family took me down to the car park then we all went home. It had been one crazy day and I was sure that I wouldn’t be caught dead near this castle ever again.

We are on the prowl to find Lanarkshire’s dodgy parkers but we need your help!Unfortunately, we cannot do this campaign on our own – so please send in your dodgy parking pictures to [email protected]. Does one of your colleagues suffer from dodgyparkingitis? If so, take a picture of the evidence and send it to us! Don’t worry, all identities will be protected and vehicle registrations blanked out. This is all in the name of good fun, and in no way are we personally attacking any individual or group.

Shotts Bon Accord 2 – Rangers 3
continued on page 15
Heavy rain had been forecast all week for the
Sunday afternoon but the sun was splitting the pavement when the John Boyack Testimonial kicked off at 2pm.
Contrary to widespread expectations, Rangers had brought some players with first-team experience and there would be little chance of the Bon Accord repeating Penicuik’s 2-0 victory the previous day, also against a Rangers XI.
There was a bright start to the match with both sets of players eager to show what they can do but when the dust settled it was Rangers who took the lead in the 22nd minute with a strong strike from Hemmings. Johnny Murdoch, on his debut for Shotts, had already saved well on two or three occasions so Shotts couldn’t say they weren’t warned.Hemmings blasted in a second
11 minutes later but Tam Hanlon then saw his vicious 35-yard shot just finger-tipped on to the bar by Grant Adam in the Rangers goal.
Stewart Ralston, standing in for manager Tony McInally, made four changes for the second half and Shotts were optically better for long periods. Allan McKenzie and Mark Duffy got Shotts back level with a deadly accuracy which bodes well for the upcoming games in the Sectional League Cup.Ralston gave John Boyack his first chance to play alongside both his brothers in a ‘competitive’ match when he brought on Steven and Peter to play out the last 20 minutes. Both showed bags of energy and commitment but the winning goal eluded all three only to appear at the other end as Fleck knocked the ball past Craig Brown who had come on
