SARGODHA HUB LAUNCH PARTY

THE WISHAWFANS OF

Hi guys, and thanks for lifting the 14th Edition of

Wishaw Hub newspaper. As you all know, the

Wishaw Hub has arranged a massive Red Nose Day Street Party with the Cafe Shabab (Newmains) in their restaurant car park, all in the hope of hitting our target of £5000 for Comic Relief, and incidentally, this day has fallen on the same day we publish this the14th Edition of the Wishaw Hub.

As always, in true Wishaw Hub style, we promise to have massive coverage of this event to capture all the frolics and festivities of the day, and all the best photos will be published in the next Wishaw Hub edition!

This brings me to the news of the hour...the Sargodha Hub Launch Party!

It is great to dream. Great dreams can lead to great expectations, from which great things may sometimes develop. Yet...a great achievement is very much a rarity these days, and to experience it when you least expect it makes it doubly special.

Transgressing international borders is no small feat, yet a great dream can inspire one to do the impossible. The Sargodha Hub is one such dream, it has miraculously materialised within a few months of its inception and

proves that great things DO happen!

The pictures captured here are a testament to all, that Positive News is not just a crazy Scottish idea, but very much an international phenomenon.

When we first approached the relevant Pakistani governmental media body in the hopes of attaining a license to print news, they thought we were yet another fish in the pond looking to publicise all the negative and depressing stories that engulf us...they could not have been more wrong!

Our aim in Pakistan is the same as what we've always preached...no more shock n' awe stories of broken helpless people, no more bad news about the violence that is made out to surround us, and no more horror stories that make people fell like staying in-doors. Instead, our philosophy and belief is that positive news stories are everywhere and believe it or not, more good things happen in this world than bad. Were this not the case then we would all be hugely unhappy and anti-depressants would be in every home!

Good positive stories hugely outnumber bad ones. Our 'independent' research entitled "REAL LIFE" has lead to the discovery that for every one negative story there are

five million positive stories, and that's no word of a lie!

Think about it, we all have a few legitimate reasons to be unhappy and sad, yet we have thousands of reasons to feel great and positive about ourselves, about our families, and about what we have in our lives.

So, it is a 'no brainer' and high-time our peers realised that concentrating on the negative leads to more negativity. When we all look to highlighting the good things achieved by our fellow human beings then you notice people happy in their communities instead of feeling alienated.

So our ethos is simple, we shall continue searching out the good stories in our local towns and give them the importance and significance they deserve above the few negative stories that occur.

All three current Hub publications have came into being at the height of the recession, and we have no intention of stopping now! The

Hub Publishing Group hopes to be a testament to all people around the world that, like in the Hollywood movie 'Monsters Inc', the day will come when it will be a unanimous belief that good news is more powerful than bad news!

The dream of a happier world cannot be dismissed by negative news, maybe the manifestation of the idea can be destroyed, but not the idea itself!

And here it is for all to see, we at the Hub Publishing Group

have chosen a path where we will spread the good news everywhere we go, and we will see it through...one country at a time!

RegardsSaj Sabri

Brave dad transforms daughter's life by donating kidneyAbrave dad donated his

kidney then raised £1400 by climbing Ben Nevis to help other patients requiring dialysis at Monklands Hospital.

Lanarkshire man Tom Cameron, 50, went through the operation for daughter Lyndsay, 28, who had been receiving dialysis at the renal unit at Monklands for two-and-a-half years.

And selfless Tom then decided to help the other patients who require dialysis at the unit by climbing the UK’s highest peak.

Tom, from the Calderbank area of Airdrie, said: “Her two brothers and step-mum had tests to see who was a possible match for a transplant.

“Although her brother Stuart and Step-mum Mary were possible matches, I was determined to do it as I’m her dad.

“I was very ill after the operation but it’s all been worth it to see the difference to Lyndsay’s life.

“I also wanted to do something to help others who are waiting for transplants and to thank everyone at the Monklands Renal unit so I am delighted we raised so much money.”

Lyndsay explained how her life had been changed by her

dad’s decision.She said: “Since I was

born I have had kidney problems and was in and out of Yorkhill Hospital. When I was 23 I started getting a lot of infections.

“When I was 24 I needed dialysis and three days each week I’d come into Monklands for up to four hours for the treatment.

“I kept up my job as a waitress in the Tudor Hotel in Coatbridge but I could only manage two days a week.

“In 2007 I went into Gartnaval Hospital for an operation to get a new bladder, as that’s what was causing the infections and I was then put on the transplant list.”

Lyndsay added: “I can’t thank my dad enough for what he did. I’ll need to take medication for the rest of my life to keep my new kidney working but it’s a small price to pay.

“Last year I went on my first holiday. I can now enjoy myself on nights out and I feel as if I have got my life back.”

Prior to Lyndsay’s transplant she required regular dialysis at Monklands Hospital and she was delighted to be able to hand over

a cheque and would like to thank all the staff

She said: “Everyone in the renal unit at Monklands were great and tried to keep our spirits up which is really important.

“The Lanarkshire Kidney Patients’ Association played a huge part and would take us away for day trips where you could go and forget about dialysis.

“We’d go out for lunch and tea and it helped you make friends meeting with people who are in similar situations to yourself.

She added: “But my dad

climbing Ben Nevis and all the support from his friends and donating this money to the Monklands renal unit, and wish them all the best in keeping up their great work.”

Sadie Shields, committee member of the Lanarkshire Kidney Patients’ Association, said: “Our funds are used to help the patients, take them on trips, hire buses, provide funds to patients who need help, and give them vouchers at Christmas.

“This £1400 is a massive boost for us and can be assured that it is the patients who will benefit from this.”

From left, Sadie Shields, dialysis patient Pauline Burton, and Tom and Lyndsay Cameron. Frankie McConville, 32,

from Wishaw had the rare opportunity of meeting rock legend Liam Gallagher who personally invited Frankie to his hotel in Glasgow earlier this month.

Frankie had queued for three hours waiting for the opening of Liam Gallagher's new designer clothes store 'Pretty Green' in Glasgow and was actually the first person in the queue. However, as it happened, the police erected a blockade on the roadside where the queue was causing another queue to form. Unfortunately, for our Frankie, the new queue got in first and he didn’t.

He couldn't control his frustration and decided to write into Pretty Green and express how he had been

unable to enter the store and meet his hero for the opening.

He described himself and lo' and behold, the staff remembered seeing our Frankie in the queue.

One thing led to another, and Frankie was asked to come to a secret location and met Liam 'mano a mano' for a good twenty minute chat! How's that for a bit of good luck?

Frankie said: “He was a cool guy. We chatted about his days in Oasis and about his new band Beady Eye and I asked him the reason for opening his new shop in Glasgow.”

He added: “I also managed to get a few autographs and he even gave me a complimentary ticket to see his new band perform at The Barrowland. He is a top guy!”

At last Thursdays meeting of the Rotary Club

of Motherwell & Wishaw Junior Vice President Ian Carrol chaired the evenings proceedings which would take the form of a school public speaking presentation.

International convenor John McDonald announced that the first of this years book stalls would be held in the Motherwell precinct on 16/4/11.

Due to circumstances outwith their control the two pupils from St Aidens High School could not attend the meeting and it was left to the two senior pupils from Dalziel High School to entertain the members and their guests.

The pupils were introduced by Karen Lawrie the principal teacher of English at Dalziel. The first speaker was Daniel Frew, a fifth year pupil who

was the individual winner in this years inter house public speaking at Dalziel.

His speech was headed "Deprived of a Sibling" and he went on to give a very entertaining and amusing account of being an only child.

Next up was sixth year prefect Catriona Walker whose talk was titled "An Exotic Mediterranean Paradise!".

Each summer Catriona’s family would travel "overseas". as she was told as she was growing up. Their destination a sun drenched island and apart from the sun it was Millport that Catriona referred to as "an ice cube in the Firth of Clyde".

She had the members laughing out loud. Rotarian John Arthur thanked the pupils and proposed a suitable vote of thanks.

This weeks meeting will be a joint meeting with the members from the Rotary Club of Hamilton and the speaker will be Margaret Dobbie.

An osteoporosis awareness day is being held at

Hairmyres Hospital on Monday 21 March.

The event is for patients, relatives, carers, staff and members of the public.

Wendy Feeney, lead nurse specialist for fractures and osteoporosis at NHS Lanarkshire, said: “Osteoporosis is a silent condition. One in two women and one in five men over the age of 50 will break a bone primarily as a result of osteoporosis.

“However, there are ways

to minimise the risk of osteoporotic fractures such as a healthy diet, ensuring you get enough calcium and vitamin D each day, weight bearing exercise, stopping smoking and moderating your alcohol intake.”

She added: “Steps can also be taken to reduce the risk of falls in the older age groups such as moving objects that you could trip over, regular eye tests and wearing good fitting footwear.”

The event at Hairmyres Hospital will be held in the reception area from 9.30am to 4pm.

Hospital holds event to minimise the risk of the ’silent condition’

Most of Scotland will not look at the 6th December

2010 with fond memories as most of us were stuck in snow blizzards in cars across the country. However some students from Motherwell College will look back on this day as perhaps the most influential day in their music career.

The Foundry Music Lab in Motherwell is where the practical side of the NQ Rock and Pop and HNC/D music courses at Motherwell College are delivered.

When the students were told at 9.30am that it would be best to stay put until the conditions and roads improve, they perceived a long day ahead.

Although it just so happened the legendary Wet Wet Wet bass guitarist and songwriter, Graeme Clark was in the studio next door recording his debut solo album – ‘MR UNDERSTANDING’.

To raise sprits Graeme offered to speak to the marooned students and gave an hour and a half of his time talking in depth about his career and the secrets behind writing hit songs.

This in-depth chat and fascinating account into the career of one of Scotland’s most successful musicians has become a huge influence to

Motherwell College students. And when Graeme promised

to come back and hear the progression and recording of the students work the students were delighted and set to work straight away.

Thursday 3rd February 2011 Graeme kept his word. While mixing and adding the finishing touches to his solo album in the Foundry Music Lab , he took some time out to hear some of the songs that the students had written as part of their coursework.

Graeme said ‘I really enjoyed engaging with the students. I

heard some great music from the bands that the students had formed. I felt a good energy from everyone and their desire for learning about their craft was completely refreshing and reminded me a bit of myself in my younger days. ‘For me, this experience enabled me to put some of my musical thoughts and philosophies out there and as a songwriter its always beneficial to re-access, re-evaluate and analyse what you are trying to do, so by simply sharing this with the students. I found it a really rewarding experience.’

GIANT HEART NEEDED FOR DILLION

Central Scotland MSP Alex Neil has welcomed the final stage in the process to scrap pre-

scription charges saying that “it is the end to a tax on ill-health”.

The Scottish Parliament’s Health Committee voted to approve the passage of the legislation which will result in prescriptions for all patients

in Scotland being free from April 1. This contrasts to prescriptions charges in England which is cur-rently set at £7.40 per item.

Since this Scottish Government took office in 2007 it has gradually phased out prescription charges, which were then set at £6.85, with cur-rent fees at £3 per item.

Mr Neil said:“I am absolutely delighted

that prescription charges will be phased out completely. This is a momentous occasion marking the culmination of four years’ work in gradually reducing the burden on Monklands patients paying for prescriptions. It is the end to a tax on ill-health.

“The Scottish Government has gradually reduced the cost of prescriptions since 2007 and in doing so has helped large numbers of patients, particularly those with long-term conditions and who require a number of prescription items.

"At times of economic dif-ficulty, the last people we should be penalising are the sick. We want to move towards restoring the NHS to its founding princi-ples: healthcare that's free at the point of delivery and based on clinical need, not the ability to pay.

"I am delighted that those opposing our plans were not successful, it means that people suffering from conditions like asthma can continue their treat-ment without having to worry about whether they can afford it.”

Makeover Project – Forward for JesusOrgan restoration no longer a pipe dream thanks to Heritage Lottery Funding

The congregation of Dalziel St Andrews Parish Church in Motherwell can look

forward to organ music again filling the church as they celebrate a grant of £50,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) to restore their historic and nationally important Walcker Pipe Organ. The restoration is part of the Church’s Makeover Project – Forward for Jesus.

The organ was installed in the Grade “B” Listed Church building in 1900 and remains in original condition having been well maintained over its long life. The passage of time, however, has taken its toll and a complete restoration is now required.

The advice received from Gerhard Walcker, of the German based manufacturers, and other experts in this specialist field, is that the organ is very well worth restoring and, when back to full use, can be used to support and uplift worship at DStA for many years to come.

The office-bearers and congregation have been faced with the daunting task of raising the substantial budget to take forward this work with an estimate of over £100,000 drawn up for the work which will be required to bring the organ back into use. Many fund raising events have been carried out over the past year, and more are in the pipeline.

The organ was installed in 1900 with very generous help from Lady Hamilton with the Hamilton family then worshiping at DStA. One of the feature stained glass windows in the sanctuary is dedicated to Lady Hamilton and the Hamilton family.

The present day successors to Lady Hamilton, Rt. Hon. Lord Hamilton of Dalzell and Rt. Hon. Lord Hamilton of Epsom have both been in touch with the congregation and forwarded generous cheques in support of the appeal to have the organ restored.

Recognition of the importance of the

instrument was emphasised when the London based British Institute of Organ Studies awarded the organ their Certificate Grade 1 “in recognition of it being an outstanding instrument by G.F.Walcker 1900, in original condition.

” The organ is now listed in the Institute’s Register of Historic Pipe Organ’s “ ..as being an instrument of importance to the national heritage and one deserving careful preservation for the benefit of future generations.” The Institute confirm that this is the first pipe organ in Scotland to be awarded this certificate.

Expressions of support have also been received by the congregation from local M.P. Frank Roy and M.S.P. Lord MacConnell as well as from the Motherwell Heritage Society.

Hamilton Presbytery and the General Trustees of the Church of Scotland have been very supportive of the complete Makeover Project and have authorised a search for grant assistance to help secure the funds needed by the congregation.

Now, thanks to wonderful support from Heritage Lottery Fund Scotland (HLF), added to the support announced last year by North Lanarkshire Council’s Councillor Pentland on behalf of the Environmental Key Fund (£30,000), the Property Convener at the church can begin the process of securing a specialist contractor to carry out the work of restoration.

An application was made to HLF under the “Your Heritage” programme which has a ceiling grant award of £50,000. There is a great deal of competition for the scarce resources which HLF is able to distribute but they have been most generous in awarding the maximum grant for this special organ restoration scheme.

A specialist Consultant, Mr James MacKenzie of Glasgow, has been guiding the office-bearers as they take forward the scheme

of restoration. An essential part of the Heritage Lottery

Grant relates to education of all as regards the importance of this local heritage item.

Special events are planned over the next few months to address this challenge with a start being made by inclusion of details of the organ on the church’s web-site. The younger members of the congregation will be fully involved in the restoration scheme as will local schools.

Director of Music at the church, Mr Eric Geddes said, “We have missed the very special sound of the pipe organ in our praise over the past year and we all now look forward to the return to full use of the organ as an integral part of our worship at Dalziel St Andrews Parish Church.”

The Parish Minister, Rev Derek Hughes paid tribute to all in the congregation who continue to work so very hard in raising funds for the overall Project including the organ restoration. He added, ”Our Director of Music continues to lead the praise very well indeed with the electronic instrument available to him but we all look forward to the time when we can lift our voices in praise and do so with the wonderful help from the pipe organ.

We are so very grateful for the support internally within the congregation and also from those outwith DStA. Diane, Philippa and the staff at the Heritage Lottery Fund Scotland have been so helpful and supportive, as have the local staff David and Ellen at the Environmental Key Fund.”

Colin McLean, Head of the Heritage Lottery Fund in Scotland, said: “We are delighted to be able to help preserve this wonderful example of a Walcker organ.

Its marvellous sound will once again bring enjoyment to the local community through worship and recitals for many years to come.”

Continued from Front Pagesaid the venue had been caught off-guard at the attraction posed by these talented kids.

Whilst making her thank-you speech at the end of Saturday’s performance, Lorna seemed quite emotional, especially in mentioning the setback at the start of this year. Overhead pipes burst in their storage unit ruining nearly sixteen years worth of props, scenery and costumes.

Lorna expressed her heartache by admitting, “it was like losing sixteen years of memories!”

However, every cloud surely does have a silver lining, as a certain restaurant in Hamilton generously donated £1000 to the Ups & Downs club upon learning of their loss. The staff at McDonald’s Restaurant (Hamilton Palace Grounds) boosted the Ups & Downs club members’ spirits by a massive cash boost, and with renewed enthusiasm, and damn-right hard work, the entire 72-strong cast was re-costumed, despite all odds.

Lorna said: “It would seem that ‘impossible’ is just not in the Costume Team’s vocabulary!”

With a waiting list the length of the Royal Mile, the

Ups & Downs Theatre Group’s membership is highly sought after by many parents with children suffering from Down’s Syndrome.

Occurring at random in about one in 700 births, children with Down’s are born with an extra chromosome in every cell of their body.

Yet, despite appearances, these amazing children are like all people, remarkable and unique, with their own range of abilities and personal qualities. And like everyone else, they too require support praise, encouragement and respect. Like you and I, they need opportunities, not limitations.

The Ups & Downs Theatre Group has achieved the impossible, and ‘hats-off’ to all the people involved in the club, especially the production team, David Black, Maureen Anderson, and Leanne Ramage.

The performances of all the children in “TAKE 16” and the memorable performance of a certain Eliza (Joanne Toner) was truly captivating!

It’s no wonder that, in the Ups & Downs Theatre group, the kids passion and talent for music, theatre and dance has seen them succeed in setting aside stereotypes and setting a very high standard of performance for all to aspire to.

It has been yet another fantastic two heats (Heats 3 & 4) bringing us even closer to the nail-biting semi-finals of Lanarkshire’s Battle of the Bands competition at Wishaw’s Commercial Bar/Hotel.The bands are getting ever harder to judge now, which seems a bit strange, as it’s still the first heats. However, the

answer may be that the judges’ ears are getting ‘worn in’ a tad bit due to all the heavy rock solos! We’ve had classic rock bands right through to Ceilidh, fused with electronic sounds, and then of course, no Battle of

the Bands would be complete without some heavy metal/hard rock. This too was delivered in true rock-style. We all must admit, this competition has truly delivered it all, and there’s

still more to come! So, why not join us all at the Commercial every Thursday night for the next six weeks, and live the rock-dream with

our bands that will be battling it through the night to become the ultimate Rock Gods! SEE YOU THERE!

So Mother’s Day is upon us yet again. Have you ever wondered why we have Mother’s Day? Where exactly does Mother’s Day come from? Well rumor has it that back in the 17th Century a clerical decree was made in England that broadened the celebration of Lenten Sunday to include real mothers. This was officially titled Mothering Day and became over time an especially compassionate holiday toward the working classes. This is because during Lenten Sunday, servants and trade workers were given permission to travel back to their home towns to visit their families. Mothering Day was also welcome because it meant a one-day break from the fasting and penance of Lent. As a result families across this country enjoyed a massive feast on a par with Christmas dinner, only in this instance mother was the guest of honour and presented Mothers with cakes and flowers. Traditionally Simnel cakes were baked, giving

Mothering Day its other popular name Simnel Sunday. Traditionally, children give the gifts of flowers and chocolates to their mothers on this day, however, here is our top 3 other idea’s for you to spoil your mother with:Afternoon Tea at The Caledonian Hotel EdinburghEnjoy the Caley Afternoon Tea in the splendour and comfort of the Pompadour Restaurant whilst overlooking Edinburgh Castle and Princes Street. The modern Mother’s Day is celebrated on various days

in many parts of the world, most commonly in March, April or May as a day to honour mothers and motherhood.

In the UK it follows the old traditions of Mothering Sundday, celebrated in March and April. It is thought the day emerged from a custom of mother worship in ancient Greece, which kept a festival to Cybele, a great mother of Greek gods.

This festival was held around the Vernal Equinox around Asia Minor and eventually in Rome itself from the Ides of March (15 March) to 18 March. The ancient Romans also had another holiday, Matronalia, that was dedicated to Juno, though mothers were usually given gifts on this day.

In Europe there were several long standing traditions where a specific Sunday was set aside to honour motherhood and mothers such as Mothering Sunday. Mothering Sunday celebrations are part of the liturgical calendar in several Christian denominations, including Anglicans, and in the Catholic calendar is marked as Laetare Sunday, the fourth Sunday in Lent to honour the Virgin Mary and your "mother" church (the main church of the area).

Children and young people who were "in service" (servants in richer households) were given a day off on that date so they could visit their families (or, originally, return to their "mother church). The children would pick wild flowers along the way to place them in the church or to give them to their mothers as gifts.

One of the early calls to celebrate Mother's Day in the United States was the "Mother's Day Proclamation" by Julia Ward Howe. Written in 1870, it was a pacifist reaction to the carnage of the American Civil War and the Franco-Prussian War. The Proclamation was tied to Howe's feminist belief that women had a responsibility to shape their societies at the political level

International Women's Day was celebrated for the first time in 28 February 1909, in the US, by which time Anna Jarvis had already begun her national campaign in the US. It is now celebrated in many countries on March 8.

In 1912, Anna Jarvis trademarked the phrases "second Sunday in May" and "Mother's Day", and created the Mother's Day International Association.

She was specific about the location of the apostrophe;

it was to be a singular possessive, for each

family to honour their mother, not a

plural possessive commemorating all mothers in

the world.This is also the

spelling used by U.S. President Woodrow

Wilson in the law making the holiday official in the U.S., by the U.S. Congress on bills, and by other U.S. presidents on their declarations.

Common usage in English language also dictates that the ostensibly singular possessive "Mother's Day" is the preferred spelling, although "Mothers' Day"

(plural possessive) is not unheard of.As the US holiday was adopted by

other countries and cultures, the date was changed to fit already existing celebrations honouring motherhood, like Mothering Sunday in the UK or the Orthodox celebration of Jesus in the temple in Greece.

In some countries it was changed to dates that were significant to the majority religion, like the Virgin Mary day in Catholic countries, or the birthday of the daughter of the Prophet Muhammad in Islamic countries.

Other countries changed it to historical dates, like Bolivia using the date of a certain battle where women participated in the fighting.

So don’t forget that card, flowers and/or restaurant treat for your Mum, because they are all the best mothers in the world.

COLONEL GADDAFI David Cameron has told

Colonel Gaddafi- “Stand down, nobody wants you in power”. Isn’t the pot calling the kettle black David?

Sorry, I couldn’t resist it!

CHARLIE SHEEN Charlie Sheen’s latest

antics are appalling, and must be acutely embarrassing to his dad Martin, who seems like an awfully nice fellow.

He seems to fancy himself as a genius, but he can’t even fulfil the simplest job in the world- stay clean and sober

for the duration of filming one episode of “Two-And-A-Half Men” (for which he gets several million dollars). Even my mate Spanner could manage that.

Did you know that in 1997 he

made an awful film in Glasgow called “Postmortem”? He is credited on the film as Charles Sheen, but it doesn’t give any credence to a film so bad that it makes even the most pointless film look like Citizen Kane.

It’s on YouTube if you want a giggle; there is a classic scene where you see Charlie Sheen and a large group of coppers running down Buchanan Street to catch a serial killer, and you can actually see where the crowd has been cordoned off. You can actually see people waving at the camera!

When he was in Glasgow making the film, his antics made the front page of a tabloid newspaper, and several people who’d been with him when he threatened members of the public and bought illegal substances made some money off their stories. The next day, the man who sold him the drugs sold his story, made some money…then went to prison as he’d pretty much signed a confession and put it in the

paper!

A PLEA TO WEDDING SERVICE PROVIDERS

In a previous edition of Q’s Views, I had a pop at a wedding shop who gave my fiancée a load of cheek. I also mentioned the forthcoming Royal Wedding, which I reckon the public are somewhat underwhelmed about (even though they may get a day off work, or at the very least have a quiet day).

The reason I think people are underwhelmed has nothing to do with a dislike of Prince William, but the fact that weddings are getting out of control. I believe when some firms hear the word “Wedding”, it translates as “Please fleece me out of as much money as you can”.

I am told of some shops in the EU who charge €25 simply for the privilege of trying on a wedding dress. If they start doing that in the UK, some of the fussier women I know

could be bankrupt within a month.

So if you are a person who provides anything for a wedding- flowers, catering, music, outfits- please be reasonable. Nobody objects to you making a profit, but adding a high mark up to your services just because it’s for a wedding isn’t right.AND FINALLY

Yours Truly is appearing at the “Tall Tales Oscars” this Saturday as part of the Aye Write Festival at the Mitchell Library, in Glasgow.

Details can be found on this link - www.ayewrite.com

Last year I finished second, and even managed to tell a story that didn’t involved Airdrie. You should come along; it is a very enjoyable night out, and there’s a live band playing in Bon Accord (the pub next door) after the show.

Thousands across the UK took their first positive step towards being smoke free to mark No Smoking Day on Wednesday 9 March.

For anyone thinking of joining them, NHS Lanarkshire’s Stop Smoking Service offers them the best chance of success.

Nancy Docherty, NHS Lanarkshire Stop Smoking

Service Manager, said: “The theme of this year’s No Smoking Day is ‘Time to quit’. But the truth is that with the

Stop Smoking Service – any time is the right

time. We are here 52 weeks a year

to help you make one of the biggest changes to your health

by stopping smoking.“We provide

a combination of advice from trained

nurse advisors, group support and free nicotine replacement therapy. Research shows this approach is the most successful way to stop. It is more than four times as effective as going it alone.”

For more information about the help on offer call NHS Lanarkshire Stop Smoking Service on 08452 17 77 07 or text ‘Advice’ 81066.

Here are some of the stop smoking initiatives happening throughout Lanarkshire this month: Workplace groups in Airdrie and Cumbernauld in Social Work Services and Housing; Stop smoking event in Cumbernauld College; Stop smoking resources for staff at Coatbridge College; Over 50s

event in Cumbernauld; Stop smoking group running in Croy Miners Club; Workplace groups at Tesco and Kwik Fit in Bellshill; Group within Motherwell Football Club which involves young people

attending with their parents; Stop smoking youth group in Holytown; No Smoking Day resources distributed to all schools in Hamilton, Blantyre, Larkhall and Clydesdale; No smoking stand at Rutherglen

Health Centre; Working with Cambuslang and Rutherglen Community Health Imitative to support smokers in Burnhill; No Smoking Day stands at Hairmyres, Wishaw General and Monklands Hospitals; and

Surveying hospital inpatients to ask if they know help is at hand to support them to stop smoking or to cope with nicotine withdrawal symptoms they may experience while they are an inpatient.

The Community garden in Gowkthrapple was first created in 2002. The purpose was to give the residents a focal point during the summermonths and to provide a safe environment for the local children to play.

Unfortunately over the last few years, the interest and ownership of the gardens has lessened which has resulted in deterioration to anywork that had been previously carried out.

Now that spring is upon us, the Housing & Social Work department in conjunction with the local primary, high schools and MotherwellCollege plan on reviving the gardens. There are 2 areas that will be concentrated within the gardens, one being a feature with flowers and

shrubbery and the other creation of allotments.

Once this is completed we will be looking for the participation of all residents in the area to help keep the gardens up to standard and to take ownership.

If you are currently a resident within Gowkthrapple and would like to discuss any ideas for the Community Gardens please contact Gowkthrapple Neighbourhood Office on (01698) 403570.

My Kilbowie Trip"Those who are in primary 6 or below still have to experience the joy of going to Kilbowie. Going to Kilbowie is amazing. There are many activities, canoeing, kayaking, skiing, gorge walking, safari and much more, but one of the best things is being away from home with your friends, everyday is another adventure because you learn something new and different in every activity. I recently went to Kilbowie and I really enjoyed it, I made friends with people from the other schools and learned lots of new things, for example I learned how to ski and canoe. The activities can be challenging and scary sometimes, like the night line, you’d wear a blind fold and follow a rope that goes through tunnels, mud, around trees and between branches, to top that off it’s in the forest. I found it really fun and exciting. I think Kilbowie is just an amazing experience." by S. Jabeen

In the competitive market of ‘coupe 4 doors’ you have

a mighty impressive lineup. You have the Mercedes CLS, Volkwasgen’s Passat CC, BMWs 5 series Gran Turismo, Porsche’s Panamera to name but a few.

Audi have two offers in the form of the A5 and A7 Sportbacks… The question is; are they any good?

The Audi A5 Sportback is the luxury car that really stands up to scrutiny. It’s fast, it’s comfortable and it’s spacious. It has boy racer qualities as well as high safety ratings and great reliability. It outstrips other Audis on fuel economy and space but are they

worth the extra money? Let’s take a closer look!Performance

The A5 boasts a top speed of 155 miles per hour and makes it from 0-60 in just 6.3 seconds on average. It is also carrying some impressive new technology like the S Tronic transmission which combines the good qualities of manual and automatic gear boxes. The S Tronic’s duel clutch control allows for gear changes in just 0.2 seconds and stops any interruption to power flow to the engine. Audi offer a choice of petrol of diesel engines while maintaining good fuel efficiency

and a sporty performance. The A5 uses subtle Stop Start technology to conserve fuel while the car is stopped and in neutral. It cuts the engine during this period of rest but the engine is quickly restarted as soon as the clutch is pressed. This can be easily disabled if it proves inconvenient to the driver but appears to be a barely noticeable money saver. Ride and Handling

The A5 is long and wide (4711mm by 2020mm) which can be a problem for parking in urban situations. It is also high which adds headroom and makes for high and easily accessible doors.

The car only has four seats, which will prove problematic for that extra 0.4 of a child the very average family have, but they are wide and well spaced making for a luxurious drive.

The A5 also offers adjustable steering and throttle response. This technology can be set to auto, which modifies the system to the optimum depending on driving conditions, or to individual, which is available with satellite navigation and allow the driver to customise the dynamics. Safety and security

The A5 comes with a range of airbags, driver and passenger as well as front side and side protection.

At the other end of the spectrum the Audi comes equipped with a first aid kit for bumps and scrapes on days out.

To keep the car secure there are locking wheel bolts as well as an intelligent key and anti-theft system.

ToysTo assist with parking the A5

has an electromechanical parking break and a rear acoustic parking system which should make up for the difficulty made by the length and width of the Audi.

There is also a colour driver’s information system and an adjustable steering column to make for a comfortable drive.

With the A5 it really is a case of spending money to save money. It is more reliable than other Audis and it costs a lot less to run than the average luxury car but the initial price is high.

It does provide good value for money. The only thing is that it is a lot of money.

Fuel Price Round Up

by Heather Palmer

Our school is organising a prom for our year, during summer. I have my eyes set on this girl. She just broke up a relationship, so I know she is available. The problem is I know that someone else is interested in her too. I would love to ask her out to the prom, but I am worried that she says no. It would really shatter my confidence. What should I do?

Maya says:That’s nice you haven’t just

jumped into it and asked her out right away. It’s good to give a girl some space after a break up. However, you can’t leave it too long if the other ‘interested’ party is thinking the same thing.

If she likes you she will say so, but if she is undecided just give her time. Don’t let the chance of her saying no put you off.

Everyone likes to be told they are liked. If she acts in an immature way about it, ask yourself, do you really want to date her?

Anyway, why don’t you try dropping some hints and see if she is interested, and then just ask her. What you got to lose really… good luck.

I’m an idiot!Having split up with my ex

a few months ago I thought we were going to work things out as we were still meeting up and talking everyday and things looked like they might be getting back on track.

We spent Valentines night together and another night two

days later. I thought that the relationship was starting to piece itself back together. But he suddenly stopped talking to me and when I confronted him about this he said he felt that it was easier. He did not want to lead me on anymore. I asked him outright if he was seeing somebody else, he said he wasn't.

A week later I asked him again. I just knew that he was keeping something from me and this time he admitted he was texting somebody else but wouldn't tell me who it was. Then he confessed it was somebody else we worked with but that I would be the first to know if it went any further.

I was so angry and so hurt that I couldn't bring myself to speak to him, so I didn't. I had my suspicions as to who it was and I was annoyed with her as well and livid that she was meant to be a friend and had done this to me.

He didn’t phone me, so I ignored him at work, which he seemed OK with. I knew something was up. I later discovered he was going out with this other girl at work - I went ballistic.

Anyway, I later calmed down, but I couldn’t bear seeing them together at work. I kept texting him about the pain he had put me through. He also kept putting different messages on my facebook. I have since then hid my wall from him. I am worried now that my childish behaviour might get me into

trouble at work if they tell the boss. I haven't done anything at work, but I’m just scared. Should I apologise?

Maya says:I understand how you feel it’s

a tough situation to be in. You were hurt and angry and felt that they were rubbing your nose in it. I think you've done the right thing by hiding your wall from them. Now you need to delete and block them both so you won't be tempted to look at their stuff on facebook. It won't help you and in a way you will be torturing yourself by doing that.

I don't think they can take it further and involve your workplace as nothing has happened there and what you do in your private time is your own business.

I personally don't think you should apologise to them but that of course is up to you. Try and avoid them if you can until this has all blown over, although I understand that it might be difficult if you work with them. Just be strong and it will all pass over.Good luck

Formula 1 finally gets under the way at the end of this

month at Melbourne, Australia following the postponement of the Bahrain Grand Prix due to the political situation there.

Paul Di Resta becomes Scotland’s latest F1 hopeful, making his Grand Prix debut for Force India. Di Resta is no stranger to F1 or Force India as the 24-year-old served as the team’s test & reserve driver before being promoted to a full-time driver and affording him the opportunity to familiarise himself with the car during practice sessions at several Grand Prix weekends last season. The 24-year-old Scot, will be hoping to build on his success in F3 where he beat then team-mate Sebastian Vettel to the title back in 2006 and in the German Touring Car series DTM, where Di Resta finished runner-up in 2008 and

won the championship in 2010 at his fourth attempt.

Narain Karthikeyan secured a return to F1 with Hispania. Karthikeyan, was India’s first F1 driver when he debuted back in 2005 with Jordan. Vitantonio Liuzzi joins the new look line-up following his departure from Force India.

As always there are a number of rule changes for the paddock to contend with, notably the re-inclusion of the controversial Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS) that debuted back in 2009 and the switch to Pirelli tyres following departure of Bridgestone from the sport. Ferrari looked to be the strongest in pre-season testing and although I wouldn’t completely rule out McLaren and Mercedes, at this stage it seems as if the Italian outfit, along with Red Bull are going to be the teams to beat.

Yet again Master Ronnie White’s KIXUDO fighting system showed its success at the recent IAKSA Open in Broxburn picking up nu-merous awards in 1st, 2nd and 3rd places.

Ronnie commented “I am absolutley delighted. This simply shows the effectivness of the free flowing system I have devised, KIXUDO is a really fast-paced kickboxing system, it also incorporates various locks and grappling moves.” For more info call Ronnie 07870216909

Forth delivered a 92 minute sucker punch scrambling the

ball home from a corner kick for a late equaliser to snatch a point when a win for the home side looked certain. Wishaw however have only themselves to blame for failing to convert the chances which came their way earlier in the game.

The match had started with a major scare for the home side as Forth raced up the park and Gordon Murphy’s rocket shot rebounding from the post with

Gallagher well beaten. J Mcbride then had two clear

chances to put Wishaw ahead, first missing narrowly from a J P McBride layoff then minutes later heading over, with the goal at his mercy. In 10minutes Wishaw were unfortunate not to get a penalty when J PMcBride was pulled down but the home sides protests were waved away. In 27 minutes J McBride made up for his earlier misses, sliding the ball home from a Dias cross from the right to give the home side

the lead. The second half offered little

in the way of creative football with both sides struggling on the heavy pitch and passes constantly going astray. Coffey ran clear midway through the half but was adjudged to be off-side. The home side brought on Devanney and McIntyre to bolster the defence and looked to be content to play the game out until Joe Ferguson secured the late equaliser.
