Letter To The Editor

The recent “Design the unofficial poster for Pop

Out To Play 13th July 2011” has been an absolute success, due to the support that was given from the Woodside Street community both parents & children alike.

Organiser, David Watson of 70 Woodside Tower, Motherwell, contacted various known organisations & associates within the community & made requests for some assistance towards the unofficial pop out to play day as well as giving a full run down of how the event came about etc. In particular, drawing

attention to the fact that Woodside Street is being seen as an ‘independent project’ in support of the younger generation of Woodside Street area of Flemington Motherwell.

Within 3 days, the first pledges of support were received, followed by others in a rapid succession over the following week. Initially this started as £150 being shared between 3 prizes. Donations were very kindly supplied by Lanark ROCA Branch Cold War Veterans ‘Ex-Services’, a giant jar of sweets donated by ‘Sweet Shop Stop’ of Brandon Street, Hamilton and Mr Ian Melville of

Ink Spot Hamilton very kindly donated the prizes of arts & crafts material along with very generous support by all the staff at Ink Spot afterwards.

Donations were divided into the various age categories of entrants with the independent judges commenting that the standard was very hard to judge.

The winners were as follows ... Abbie Florence, Range Street, Sophie Braesyde, Woodside Tower. Charlotte Carter, Glen Court, Sophie Walker (Dickson) Woodside Tower, C.J lLgunas, Woodside Tower with each prize winner received an A2 plastic wallet filled with up to £100 worth of arts & crafts material as supplied by Ink Spot Hamilton.

A financial donation made for the sweets was donated to the ‘Cystic Fibrosis Charity’ on behalf of the Woodside Street children to the staff member of Ink Spot Hamilton who’s son has Cystic Fibrosis.

The official opening of the “Pop Out To Play Day” has been arranged & confirmed for the 13th of July between 1pm and 3pm at Woodside Street play area (between Woodside & Glen Towers).

A time capsule is also being considered to coincide with 2012 being HRH Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee containing images of the official opening & other photographs to record the event. The time capsule would be marked with a brass plate and be opened 10years from now.

Woodside Street Play Area Update

HUNGAMA FESTIVALStrathclyde Park played host

to Scotland’s Hungama festival on 3rd July at M&D’s Theme Park, celebrating a fusion of Scottish and Asian culture in what was one of the hottest days of the year so far.

Thousands of visitors witnessed local music talent, magicians and dancers with the headline act of the day being established London British-Indian singer, Juggy D, who wowed the crowd and even invited up his own backing dancers in the form of young children from the crowd.

As well as the music talent on display, there was a wide array of stalls to tempt even the most sensible of shoppers offering hidden gems and treasured trinkets to be snapped up and kept as a memento of the day alongside various vendors selling culinary delights.

The event also raised funds for its charity partner The Well Foundation who help provide safe drinking water to some of the 1.1 billion people who lack access to clean water.

Pizza Fonte is a Wishaw-based take-away and home delivery pizza company specializing in authentic gourmet Italian pizzas. They fired up their wood burning pizza oven in March this year, a first for the local area, and they plan on sticking to their philosophy, described by co-owner Alan Cardwell as, “no gimmicks, just fresh ingredients cooked and combined in the traditional manner.”

Pizza Fonte believe there are three crucial things about real Italian food, simplicity, great ingredients and traditional methods, and they are passionate about staying true to this authentic culinary character.

Cardwell continues, “Our strategy right from the start was to test the concept of truly authentic Italian pizza in Lanarkshire, where people know us and where we knew we would get honest feedback. We banked on people understanding the difference in flavour and texture that only the wood–fired oven gives the products. The overwhelming feedback has been that we have a winner, especially in terms of product taste and quality – which was the most important factor to us.”

Listening to customer feedback has also recently led to the addition of pasta to the menu, various new Italian starters, and most recently, several meal deals. Meal deals feature offers for couples, families and children e.g., The Family deal: 2 mains, 2 starters & 2 kids’ pizzas for £20.

Another crucial component of their enterprise is their user-friendly and secure online ordering system at www.pizzafonte.co.uk, which even allows customers to place orders in advance.

Pizza Fonte operates as a home delivery service, delivering to within 4 miles of their location in Wishaw and including Motherwell, Overtown, Law and Carluke. Visit the website, call 01698 371 591 or stop by 4 Netherton Rd, Wishaw, ML2 0EQ.

Zumbathon Held In Strathclyde ParkOver 200 people turned out

for a massive ‘Zumbathon’ in Strathclyde Park on Sunday 3rd July.Entitled “Zumbathon in the Park 2011”, over £1,400 was raised for good causes MacMillan Cancer Support and Kidney Research UK and featured Zumba instructors from all over Scotland who brought along members of their own class.

At £10 a ticket, everyone entering received the Zumba dance tuition, energy supplement and a special gift in the form of a bottled water delivered by Mathew from ‘Butlers In The Buff’, much to the delight of the ladies. Zumba dancers were able to

take advantage of the onsite Beautician Lola and a Bowen Therapist offering taster sessions, with a percentage of the money going to the chosen charities.

Organiser Nicole Hill told The Wishaw HUB “It was fantastic to see so many people turn out on a scorcher of a day for such a good cause. I’d like to say thanks to my family for supporting me with the running of the event and everyone else that made it such a special event on the day. I am already looking forward to organising next years event; Zumbathon In The Park 2012”

Angela McCormack, Fundraising Manager for

Macmillan Cancer Support in Lanarkshire spoke highly of the team behind the event saying “I would like to sincerely thank Nicole, her family and her friends for organising the Zumbathon to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support and Kidney Research. This is a special year for Macmillan as it’s our centenary year and we really appreciate the fundraising efforts of people like Nicole which helps us provide much-needed emotional, practical, medical and financial support to people affected by cancer.

Last month Motherwell College raised a

fantastic £8,500 in aid of the Teenage Cancer Trust. The money was raised following a special charity dinner and auction and other fund raising events at the College.

The dinner which was hosted by Bill Barclay and Forbes Gauld saw students from the College’s Hospitality and Professional Cookery department produce a stunning four-course meal for 140 guests in the College kitchens.

Guests enjoyed cocktails and canapés on arrival, with live music provided by the College’s Rock and Pop students.

Following dinner, guests were invited to dig deep into their pockets to bid for a range of auction prizes donated by local and national businesses, including a flying lesson, a firefighter day with Strathclyde fire rescue and a round of golf at Gleneagles with Lynn Kenny.

Other fundraising activity included the sale of cupcakes, a sponsored walk and recycling of crafts by students of the Support for Learning Department.

The Teenage Cancer Trust provides specialist units that offer teenagers and young adults a place to meet new friends and get support from people facing similar challenges. Teenage Cancer Trust aspires to provide every young person with cancer the opportunity to access one of their specialist units. Everything about the units has been designed to give teenagers the very best chance of a positive outcome.

David Fairweather, Director of Curriculum and Academic Planning at Motherwell College said:“We are really pleased that we were able to raise such a fabulous sum of money for such a worthwhile cause, especially as 70% of our student population falls within the age group of those who benefit from

the Teenage Cancer Trust. I would also like to thank all the suppliers, guests, students and staff who contributed to making our fundraising activities so successful.”

Christine Jason, Head of Fundraising for Teenage cancer Trust (Scotland and Northern Ireland) said: “Teenage Cancer Trust are delighted to benefit from the very successful dinner and other imaginative fundraising activities which the staff and students of Motherwell College have organised. It is a pleasure to work with such an

enthusiastic and creative team.

“Every week, six teenagers or young adults are diagnosed with cancer. With the support of organisations like Motherwell College we can make a real difference to their lives. We would welcome the opportunity to work with other colleges and universities, particularly through our Education programme can be provided, free of charge to schools, colleges and universities across Scotland. For further information see www.teenagecancertrust.org.”

You never said "I'm leaving"You never said goodbye

You were gone before we knew itand only God Knew why.

In Life we loved you dearly. In death we love you still.

In our hearts you hold a place, that no one could ever fill.

You left us peaceful memories, your love is still our guide,

and though we can not see you, you are always at our side.

Our family chain is brokenand nothing seems the same.

But as God calls us one by one,the Chain will link again.

Armed Forces Flag Flies for Heroes in North LanarkshireVeterans of the armed forces

joined North Lanarkshire Council Provost Tom Curley and Deputy Lieutenant of Lanarkshire Brian Miller to unveil a special flag ahead of armed forces day which took place on Saturday 25 June.

The flag unfurling was attended by veterans from the Cameronian Regiment, Royal Marines, Royal Air Force, Royal Engineers Cumbernauld (124), Highland Light Infantry and representatives from other forces who have served in places such as North Africa, Cyprus, Italy and many others corners of the globe.

‘Fly a flag for our armed forces’ day helps North Lanarkshire communities recognise the challenges faced by our service personnel all over the world. Those serving

often endure testing and dangerous circumstances and, the raising of the ceremonial flag helps to acknowledge their dedication and professionalism.

Depute Provost Jim Robertson had the privilege of being Armed Forces champion for Lanarkshire and has assisted in marking this year’s ceremony. He said:” Armed Forces Day provides an annual opportunity for people to show support for the men and women of the forces, their families, veterans and the cadet forces and is an important occasion here in North Lanarkshire.”

Provost Curley who unveiled the flag, said: “I was delighted to unveil the special flag to honour our past, present and future servicemen and women. “Britain’s armed forces have played such a vital role in many

well documented campaigns, but more importantly have helped to bring freedom, safety and security for many people around the world.

“Support for the armed services has always been strong in North Lanarkshire and all those who attended appreciated the opportunity to recognise the important contribution made by our armed forces.

“Following the flag ceremony, I had the pleasure of speaking too many of the veterans and young cadets at a civic function held in their honour.

“Our thoughts are also with all those who are currently involved in operations across the world, and we are proud to acknowledge the job they are doing.”

Provost Tom Curley and the Depute Lieutenant Brian Miller join veterans unveiling the Armed Forces day flag outside the Civic Centre, Motherwell. Piper – Greg Stewart. Flag bearers – (Red) John McConnell, Lanarkshire Royal Engineers and (Blue) William McFall United Services Club and veteran William Roy.

UNCLE JOHN’S CHEST HEART & STROKE SCOTLAND CHAMPIONSChest Heart & Stroke

Scotland would like to pass on their thanks to London Marathon runners Craig & Elise Thomson, who have raised £5,630 to date for the charity. This has been achieved through a variety of fundraising activities including The Great Scottish Run last year, an 80’s disco and bag packing.

They chose this charity in honour of their uncle, Wishaw man John Nelson, who has heart failure. Thanks to the tremendous treatment from Wishaw General and The Golden Jubilee, John is enjoying life once again.

John would also like to send his heart filled thanks to Craig & Elise for all their hard work and organisation, not to forget all the training for both events.

Sign Up To Organ Donation Register To Give Others Second Chance At LifeGerard Falsey says his life has been transformed

after receiving a new lung. The 29-year-old, from Hamilton, had been on the organ donation register for 19 months and had become so ill he had to be fed by tube and needed a wheelchair to get about. Now, however, Gerard, who attended St Anne’s Primary and Holy Cross High in Hamilton, is enjoying regaining his independence and his life.

He said: “It’s the wee things that other people take for granted that I’ve really appreciated. I struggled to breathe, had to be fed through a tube, couldn’t walk and found it really hard to even wash and dress myself.“I’ve had some setbacks since my transplant in February and my body is still a bit weak but it’s hard to explain how amazing I feel just being able to go a walk round Strathclyde Park, socialise with my friends and not be dependent on anyone for simple tasks. My life has been transformed. I’m still building my strength and it’s still early days but I’m looking forward to getting back to reality, getting a job, driving again, being healthy and doing things like playing football with my friends.”Gerard was born five weeks prematurely and had problems with his lungs, which collapsed often, had frequent infections and asthma. His right lung never developed and although his left lung was able to compensate and allow him to lead a relatively active and normal life until his mid 20s, he knew he had to be careful not to overdo things.

By 2006, however, Gerard’s health started to deteriorate and on nine occasions Gerard’s hopes were dashed when he was informed a suitable match had been found only for the organ to then be deemed too

weak to be transplanted. Finally in February this year it was 10th time lucky for Gerard and he now returns to the Freeman Hospital every second week for a check up plus regularly attends the chest clinic at Hairmyres Hospital, which he has been attending for about 15 years.Gerard wants to encourage everyone to sign up for the organ donation register. He said: “It’s hard for some people to get their head round what it means to sign up for the register but they need to think about the difference it can make. It’s not just the person that receives the organ that has their life transformed, it’s their whole family.

“I’ve been given a second chance at life and I’d encourage everyone sign up and help improve the chances of other lives being saved.”To add your name to the NHS Organ Donor Register ring 0300 123 23 23 or visit www.organdonation.nhs.uk

COMMONWEALTH GAMESI see that the head of Glasgow’s 2014 Commonwealth Games has had to step down after accepting “offer” from a “potential supplier” which he failed to declare.

It’s not all bad for him though- he could get himself a job with FIFA?

I hate FIFA, I really do. They’re more corrupt than the mafia. At least the mafia don’t try and influence where the World Cup is hosted, and without them we wouldn’t have cool films such as The Godfather and Goodfellas.

AND FINALLYAre you planning to visit the newly opened Transport Museum in Glasgow?

Do you, like me, think

it is the best museum in the whole universe? Well do me a favour. You know the big bucket they have at the front door that says “Donations”? Put some money in.

Yes I know Glasgow’s museums are free, but if you enjoy yourself make a wee donation. It’s a bit like tipping in a restaurant, except in this instance your donation will ensure the museum’s future, and allow you to visit your favourite museums again and again.

Incidentally, when they moved from the Kelvin Hall to the Riverside, how did they get the big trams out?

MARVIN’S NEW PAD

Marvin from “The Scheme” has not

only got himself an agent, but a new £300,000 house.

I would love to have seen the faces of his new neighbours as they saw him arrive with his “agent” in tow. They can wipe about £100,000 of the value of their property now.

It is pretty sickening though, that most of us

would have to work for years to buy a house like that, yet he simply gets filmed acting like a complete dumpling and gets moved higher up the

housing list than Kate Middleton. He makes Big Brother contestants look like rocket scientists.

Plus, who on earth would “book” him via his agent, and what for. I can picture it now- ‘It’s ok guys, don’t bother phoning Chris Evans

or Terry Wogan- I’ve managed to get us Marvin off “The Scheme”’.

I read about Marvin’s new house in an article with the headline “Through The Keyhole”. Now I would pay to see Lloyd Grossman hosting that- ‘What’s this on the coffee table? Why it’s an ASBO’

FESTIVALSDid anybody see Glasvegas on the Glastonbury highlights? Does anyone else think singer James Allan really overdid it with that song? Type it into Youtube and

you’ll see what I mean.

Speaking of music festivals, did you hear about the paramedic who wanted to get into the Isle of Wight Festival to see Kasabian, so he stole a police uniform and sneaked in?

Surely his paramedic uniform would have been just as effective? Although during his time as a copper, he managed to break up a fight between some jakies and help arrest them. Most of us would pay to do that.

THE M74The M74 has opened at a cost of £692m. Critics are quick to point out that it equates to a cost of £138.4m per mile.

If you were to equate the cost in footballing

nicely. Heat up the oil and fry spoonfuls of the batter till it’s nice and brown. You can fry 12-15 pakoras at a time depending on your pan. I find a wok very good for frying samosas and pakoras. The oil can be strained and used again. You can use the same oil 3-4 times to fry the pakoras. Once the oil becomes cloudy, discard it.

Hello. I hope everyone was enjoying the

fantastic weather we have been having in last few days.

Amazing isn’t it? The summer holidays have just begun, but still so much is happening. I was at the Hungama Festival at Strathclyde Park on Sunday 3rd of July and the place was packed with everyone having a great time, including myself

There were loads of great bands playing and we even had some people plucked from the crowd to come and sing for everyone on the stage. The Wishaw HUB were there to cover it all and took many pictures which you’ll find on page 2. Now back to the real stuff, this week we have a picture of Chelsea Simpson who’s possibly one of our youngest readers, I have a couple of riddles from Alexandra Baxter (age 10) which are very good and I hope that you are all willing to give a little time to try and work it out. I also have a list of tips that you may need

when it’s your first year in a new school or class, if any of them help be sure to send in your comments. Enjoy!

One more thing if you wish to send in any of your stories, pictures, drawings or poems feel free to email me them to [email protected] or you can post them to The Wishaw HUB, 209 Main Street, Wishaw, ML2 7NE.

Stay focused, do not get distracted7. Don’t hang about with people who are a bad influence on you8. Work hard9. Have confidence in yourself, you can’t take any big steps if you’re not

ready for it10. Don’t take any big decision without thinking about it; you don’t want to land in a big mess

If you follow these tips you will be safe, make a good impression and will have a high standard of work. When you look back at all the things you have done, you’ll feel proud of what you have accomplished and I assure you everything will be absolutely fine if you stick

Kayaking Courses Provide Cool Summer FunFancy a great way to

keep the kids active this summer? Well, take advantage of the fantastic kayaking lessons on offer at Strathclyde Park and Broadwood Loch over the school holidays. The programme is for kids aged between 8 and 11 years old and will teach them all about kayaking techniques, paddling junior racing kayaks and competing in regattas which are supported by the Scottish Canoe Association. The lessons let kids use first class facilities in a safe and fun environment.Russell Daniels, Scotland’s only canoeing development officer is running the programme for North Lanarkshire Leisure over the school holiday period. “Water sports are great for kids, particularly as the temperatures heat up over the holidays. Our kayaking courses are all about youngsters enjoying themselves and are designed for those of all abilities.

“My focus is to ensure that kids pick up the basics, have fun and get the chance to compete at a higher level if they wish.”The courses cost £40 per person, which includes certification fees, and there will be further opportunities to carry on kayaking at no extra cost once the course has finished.

With Strathclyde Park being used as a key venue for the International Children’s Games this summer, kayaking provides a great chance for kids to get fit and active ahead of the games. For further information and booking please contact: Strathclyde Park on 01698 402060 or [email protected]

COUNCIL BACKS FREE SWIMS

Aquatec in Motherwell is just one of the locations youths can enjoy a free swim.

Summer has officially arrived with the school’s

breaking for the holidays and North Lanarkshire Council is backing plans in conjunction with North Lanarkshire Leisure (NLL) to continue the highly popular Free Swim programme.

For the youngsters across North Lanarkshire, it is goggles and rubber rings at the ready as the Free Swim Scheme provides a fun solution to that inevitable summertime boredom, whilst at the same time also providing the opportunity to learn how to swim.

Free Swim, originally introduced in 2001 as part of a council initiative offering daytime activities for youths across North Lanarkshire during the school holidays and has been highly popular.

The Free Swim initiative operates within all NLL facilities and runs right through summer up until

Friday 12th August. It not only runs during summer but also during the October and Easter holidays. Currently all swimming pools are preparing for the scheme in order to be ready for the busy summer hit.

Despite being highly popular with both parents and youths, the Free Swim Scheme has recently come under threat due to cuts made, thus resulting in kids being charged for their swim.

Thankfully, the problem looks likely to have been resolved with the backing of North Lanarkshire Council. NLL will be able to continue the initiative for those youths who are resident in North Lanarkshire. To gain a deeper insight into the situation The HUB met with Cllr Jim McCabe, leader of North Lanarkshire Council.

What became clear was, that although there have been some cuts made, “It is important that we continue

with the free swim concept as it gives children under 16 the opportunity to swim under a supervised situation that removes all possible dangers.” “When the weather is good, youths want to play in water and that was a driving force behind the Free Swim initiative” he said. “The Free Swim has enable youths to swim but in a safe environment.”

Since the scheme has been introduced, there has been no related accidents and has attracted 1.7 million free swims, ultimately proving its success and sustainability.

In order to facilitate the Free Swim initiative, it looks likely that dry side activities will incur a small cost per session. However, adults mainly use the dry side activities.

Originally, across North Lanarkshire, dry side activities were free of charge but in light

of budget restraints have been notched up to a meagre £1 per session, somehow seeming incomparable to other prices of up-to £10 per session.

Talking to The HUB, North Lanarkshire Leisure Chief Executive, Blane Dodds, said; “As we are facing challenges in our economic times, we are delighted to be able to continue working in partnership with North Lanarkshire Council to provide this scheme to our children in North Lanarkshire.”

He continued; “There are many benefits the kids gain from the free swim initiative and on top of this, the parents are given a sense of comfort in knowing that their kids are in a safe environment.”

Dodds also praised the dry side and outdoor activities that were available for members of the public at only £1 per session. He said that they were “delighted that these opportunities were on offer.”

The Council Leader also informed us of a brand new

scheme due to be introduced for the October session, where a new card will be brought out strictly for North Lanarkshire youths only, meaning people coming from different locations will be forced to pay the full price.

McCabe has shown his outstanding support to the North Lanarkshire community by working together with NLL in order to stand up for these vital schemes that can fundamentally make a huge impact on children’s lives and wellbeing.

The scheme runs from Monday to Friday every week between 10am to 4pm and is available within the following complexes: Kilsyth Sports Centre, John Smith Sports Centre, Sir Matt Busby Sports Complex, Aquatec, Wishaw Sports Centre, Shotts Sports Centre, Tryst Sports Centre and The Time Capsule.

Age restrictions do apply, and it is compulsory that an adult accompanies any child under 8.

SUDOKU

This week I am going to concentrate on one of the basic fundamentals of the game. The grip is the only point of contact we have with the club, therefore it has to be held correctly to give maximum consistency to your game. I am going to show 2 poor grips and describe the problems they would cause.

Looking at the arrows that i have drawn on my hands, you can see that they point more towards my left shoulder, this is known as a WEAK GRIP. A weak grip will tend to open the clubface through impact with the ball, this will lead to shots going to the right and usually short in distance.

Looking at the arrows i have drawn on my hands you can see that they point further to the right than my right shoulder, this is known as a STRONG GRIP. A strong grip will tend to close the clubface through impact with the ball, this will lead to shots going to the left and sometimes longer in distance.

Create a V shape between your thumb and index finger on your left hand and make it point towards your right shoulder with 2-3 knuckles showing, join your right hand and create a similar V also pointing towards your right shoulder. This will help the clubface to be delivered straight (square) to the ball, and will result in straighter shots and better distance control.

VENICE BEACH 2In our last issue we spoke to Pro, Natural

Bodybuilder Mick Battersby. We continue our interview at his gym, Advance Bodies and Conditioning in New Stevenston.

Kal “Hi Mick.”

Mick “Hi Kal. Great to have you back.”

Kal “Did you like the last article?”

Mick “Yes, it was fantastic apart from displaying John Wilson’s (AKA Sauce’s) before and after photos above my name. I have been the talk of the town and I have had my fair share of digs and the rest.”

Kal “Sorry, we’ve put that right for this issue. So what’s new?”

Mick “Some of our members recently participated in the Scottish Nationals in Perth last month. Five entered, all done exceptionally well and we had two second places and two third places. Martin Greene and Graham Ross both qualified for the British Finals to take place in the S.E.C.C. in September.”

Kal “That is a tremendous achievement!”

Mick “Yes Kal, we have had success all around, not all of our patrons train to this calibre, but for those who wish to attain a vascular physique, a six pack or even want to go pro, we have the knowledge and experience here at Advance to get you there. The majority of our clientele are everyday people, like you Kal, who have made

a decision to change their bodies, to improve their health and that is where we can help. Our membership includes free dietary advice or personal plans or one to one training and is only £25. How many gyms offer that service and have our results? We have a large demand from our older patrons and cater specialist training routines for them and in addition, we have a large female clientele and can target key areas like ‘legs, bums and tums’. Again we specify exercises and above all the diet where nutritional planning is vitally important. All I ask for is 8 weeks with a nutritional diet plan and a customised exercise plan and I guarantee you the physique you want.

Mick continued “A client and now personal friend Amanda Boyle came to us concerned about her weight. With our guidance and her will power, she lost a total of 18kg and is now one of the fittest members we have. It’s not just weight loss, but fitness is very important too and her photos speak for themselves.”
