Chi ldren’s Hub

Page 2: The Wishaw HUB - Issue 12

Hi and welcome to the 12th Edition of the Wishaw Hub.

We have been very busy in preparing this issue...a lot more than our usual busy that is, and this is due to the advancements we are making within the Hub Publishing group.

Firstly, I am very proud to announce the launch of our brand new 'Children's Hub' section, featuring our new Junior Editor, Miss Sannah Sabri. Currently a primary school pupil, Sannah has shown great creative potential, both as an artist and as a budding editor. It was only a few weeks ago that we received an email from her asking whether she could contribute to the Wishaw Hub paper for children her own age, and in her own words, she asked if we had a 'Children's Hub'.

One thing led to another, and Sannah finally made a personal appearance with a finished Children's Hub along with Editor's comments and an article to jump-start the section! I must admit, we were all very

much awe-struck, and are extremely delighted to have her leading the way for kids her age!

The good news doesn't end there though, as I am also very proud to finally announce the imminent launch of our first International Hub publication, entitled The Sargodha Hub, in Pakistan. Our Pakistani partners have worked night and day to make the deadline, and the Official Launch Party in Pakistan will be attended by myself and other Hub colleagues on March 11th 2011.

Pakistan is our first International country to join the Hub Publishing portfolio, and since Pakistan has never had a full English paper which prints ONLY positive news, the Sargodha Hub has been eagerly anticipated for many months now and should prove a huge success!

The new Wishaw Hub Corporate Office will soon be opening in Wishaw, and as promised it will host a dedicated Photo Studio for those special

pics:). I will of course keep you updated with its developments.

A great feature in this issue has came from Harthill's primary pupils at Alexander Peden who have been instrumental in going Green by working towards their first Eco Flag, and Ravenscraig Regional Sports Centre recently hosted Lanarkshire's Badminton competition which was a great success.

The Blue Light Disco was also a talking point as it had a Scottish theme after Rabbie Burns, and spectators saw the guest speaker address the haggis...BRILLIANT!

Finally, I am glad to welcome our newest recruits to join the Hub Group; Garry Thomas (former Editor of the Glaswegian) who will assist in the editorial function across the Hub group; Tommy Cochrane (former freelance photographer) who will work as a photographer/journalist between the Hub publications; Melissa Brady who has joined

our admin department, and our youngest recruit, Miss Sannah Sabri (currently a Primary School pupil) who filled the self-made position of Junior Editor. I wish to personally welcome them all on board and wish them all the very best.

And once again, a BIG thanks to all our Wishaw Hub Fans, keep sending us your good news stories and pics, and we will endeavour to print them all.

Warmest Regards

Saj Sabri LLB Hons, LLM, CCNA, Editor in Chief

My name is Sannah Sabri and I would like

to introduce myself as the new Junior Editor of the children’s section of the Wishaw Hub, entitled The Children’s Hub.

The idea is to let children in the area get a chance to take part in different areas to show off their talent such as writing, drawing, poetry, jokes and much more.

Every fort night we will choose a winner, they

will receive a prize for coming in either 1st or 2nd place you don’t have to be a wee Rabbi Burns or a Michaelangelo, just do your best and you don’t know you could be lucky. There is no particular age groups, just remember this is your page to discuss or write about what you feel is important.

If you feel something is not right and you want to be heard send in your messages and see if others

agree with what you have to say, don’t forget to send in your entries with your name, age and address because they just might pop up in our daily newspaper.

Send in your entries to [email protected] or post it to: The Wishaw Hub, 209 Main Street, Wishaw ML2 7NE

If I were Prime Minister, I would call my party the New Change Party

and I think I am ready to take this responsibility.I strongly believe that the qualities of a good leader should have is honesty and loyalty. They should be hard working for the people he or she represents and also for the country that they belong to.

Many politicians promise that they will be fair and honest, they promise to be hard working however it has been shown that this is not always the case. The areas I feel that are important are first the family. Mother and Father should try to bring up their children while teaching them to be honest, to give time to others and to care for family, friends, neighbours and the elderly. I feel that it is important that one parent should be able to spend time with their children

They should be able to give them a good upbringing and I will provide to those mother’s and father’s who will raise their children up to the age of seven. The parents should give them

good lessons and how to be a good person.

It is important that we raise our children in a happy and safe environment so that they become happy and kind grown-ups.

I feel that too much attention is given to the television and video games resulting in children lacking good communication skills. Therefore I would also encourage the banning of violent video games and would promote a subject which would bring different people together instead of making them part.

Over time I feel as this has been lost and that is why I feel a lot of teenagers who are getting into trouble with the police and ending up in social care home or even in prison.

It is also important that we give help to the teachers in primary school and this should continue to secondary school.I believe that education is very important and that all Scottish school leavers should be able to go to university for free. I also feel that it

is important and that we should have a free health service and this should mean free.

In Scotland we have lots of natural resources and alot of natural beauty . I feel that there are alot of oppertunities for us to create jobs and be able to provide a good wage for our workers.I would charge a fair amount of tax which would result in a very good health service and would help to provide a good police and fire service. In Scotland the biggest cause of disease is due to drinking and smoking. We would raise the taxes on these items considerably and then use the money to educate people about drink and then help them to stop smoking this would result in less income for the goverment in taxes. However, we would have a far smaller bill for our health services overall this would result in a fitter and more healthier population If you vote for me I promise and will show you this is achievable and that will do better because of it.Thank you - Prime Minister Sannah

Alexander Primary achieve Green Eco Flag

Alexander Primary School, Harthill, is working towards

achieving their first Green Eco flag. Each class has been involved in a number of Eco activities involving Litter Picking, Waste Minimisation, Energy, Health and Wellbeing. Primary 1 looked at recycling materials and then they made farm animals from them. Primary 5 discussed how to save energy and then made energy saving light bulb boxes. Primary 6 discussed energy and electricity and designed a circuit to make light bulbs glow. Each class also took part in a whole school

Litter Picking event - a record was kept of how much litter was picked up and collected. The children participated in a ‘Hip Hop Your Heart’, activity which is part of an educational health programme run by Chest, Heart and Stroke Scotland. We will hear in due course the amount that the children raised. An Eco Theatre group visited the school. Each class learned about the ‘Isle of Eigg’ and the theatre group explored the ideas and issues of how to save energy. The school is now applying for its first Eco flag.

The pupils enjoy a visit by an Eco Theatre Group and participate in a ‘Hip Hop Your Heart’ activity while all pupils took part in the Litter Picking event

Zumbathon Fitness instructors are usually motivated people and Pauline

Boyd from Wishaw is a little more motivated than most. She has organised a “Zumbathon” to raise money for the Stroke Association. Sadly, due to a stroke, Pauline lost her Grandmother Eleanor Hayton, just before Christmas. Pauline told the Hub, “I was very close to my Gran and felt it was fitting to do something in her memory which will hopefully benefit others.”

Every year an estimated 150,000 people in the UK have a stroke. About a third are likely to die within the first 10 days. With prompt medical intervention, a third are likely to make a recovery within one month and the remaining are likely to be left disabled and needing rehabilitation.Stroke has a greater disability impact than any other medical condition. In the UK alone, a quarter of a million people are living with long-term disabilities as a

result of a stroke. The Stroke Association is the only UK wide charity solely concerned with combating stroke in people of all ages. They fund research into prevention, treatment and better methods of rehabilitation which help stroke patients and their families directly through its ‘Life After Stroke Services’. These include: Information; Advice and Support; Communication Support; and Life After Stroke grants.

They also campaign, educate and inform to increase knowledge of stroke at all levels of society and act as a voice for every person affected by stroke.

This level of support, as Pauline knows, takes a lot of money and Pauline, who teaches Zumba at Overton Community Centre on Friday nights at 7.30pm and Netherton Community Centre on Tuesdays at 10.30am, wants to use her skills and her network of “Zumba” instructors to help raise around £2000 for The Stroke Association.

Do you think you’ve got what it takes to referee at the very top level? Can

you make those tough decisions that could change the outcome of a crucial match? Are you brave enough to become a referee?

Lanarkshire Referees’ Association is always on the lookout for men and women who want to take up refereeing.

And the next chance to get involved comes next week when the new entrants class kicks off at the Strathclyde Hilton Hotel, Bellshill, on February 21 at 7pm.

With almost 200 members, the association is represented at all levels of the game with officials from the Champions League all the way down to youth football.

Euan Norris, Association President and himself a Category 1/FIFA Referee, said: “Refereeing today offers a fantastic career opportunity. We have young referees coming through the ranks with a bright future ahead of them, one which could see them travel the world and referee at some of the famous venues in European football.

We are part of a team in Lanarkshire and in addition to our on-field activities, we have a healthy social calendar, giving our family and friends a chance to get involved.

There are so many benefits to becoming a referee at the moment and I urge anyone who is thinking about it to come along and take up the challenge.

For further information on becoming a referee, or to register your interest for the next class, contact secretary John Beaton by email at [email protected]

HOW DO YOU FANCY BEING A REFEREE?

Motherwell College students have been busy

raising money as part of their Business Enterprise module. The students had come up with their own ideas on how to raise the money and were able to nominate which charities they would like to help.

NQ Business studies managed to raise £376.71 for their charity - Ronald McDonald House by selling bath bombs and NQ Introduction to Law raised £579.50 for Lanarkshire based SAVI (Sexual Assault Victims Initiative).

Again a number of members were accompanied by

guests at last Thursdays meeting of the Motherwell & Wishaw Rotary Club.

International Convenor John McDonald gave details of the forthcoming book stalls which are to be held in April and September. All book donations of books can be handed to Rotarian David McLeod. The

Senior Vice President gave members an update on the District Conference that would be held in Stockport in November.

Rotarian Norman McDonald was this weeks winner of the bonus ball. President John McGeary introduced the guest speaker Robert Nimmo, a retired Wishaw businessman, whose talk was based on his

experiences when he walked the Great Wall of China in 2002

This was a charity walk in aid of the St Andrew's Hospice and Robert and his fellow walkers raised the amazing sum of £209,000. Robert led us on his journey with some delightful stories and lots of humorous incidents. Rotarian Jim Watson gave a suitable response in his vote of thanks.

Alexander Brown from Wishaw recently celebrated his 80th Birthday with his closest

friends and family and generously donated his entire Birthday money, of £1000, to CHSS. More than 90 friends and family members attended the local Masonic Hall on 8 January despite the extreme snow fall.

Alex and his wife Cathy were not wishing to receive any gifts but their friends from the Carrick Club persuaded them to reconsider, and as Alex is a heart patient himself, the C.H.S.S (Chest, Heart & Stroke Scotland Charity) was a natural choice.Alex's generosity didn't go unnoticed though, the Chief Executive of C.H.S.S Mr David Clark, personally called at Alex's house to receive the generous cheque. He was accompanied by Alison Campbell, Lanarkshire's co-ordinator for Heart Failure Support, (courtesy of C.H.S.S) and Alex's appointed nurse, Ms Julie Brown, a Heart Failure Nurse Specialist from Wishaw General Hospital. Alex's wife Cathy went out of her way to set up this meeting and invited The Wishaw Hub to cover yet another positive local story. Not only that, Cathy also prepared a special buffet for everyone

including sandwiches, tea, coffee and biscuits. David Clark has been working with C.H.S.S for 18 years

now and learning of Alex's donation was important enough to warrant his personal attendance. Both David and Alison were

very happy to receive the 'larger than life' cheque which Cathy managed to get from the local bank.

Alex's nurse of three years, Julie Brown, considers herself almost family now, and she mentioned that despite Alex's age, he is in very good health and reminds her of a young Sean Connery when dressed in his kilt.

Alex and Cathy are hoping to celebrate their Diamond Wedding Anniversary in a few years time, and Alex laughingly mentioned that the C.H.S.S can expect another generous donation to mark this momentous occasion!

OVER a hundred competitors from 27 different schools took

part in this year’s Lanarkshire Area Schools’ Badminton Association (LASBA) Secondary Championships. The championships took place at the new Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility with pupils from both North and South Lanarkshire schools entering. Players who lost their first round matches were able to take part in consolation events; with the winners receiving medals. Monday night’s finals provided some thrilling badminton. They included boys’ and girls’ singles, boys’ and girls’ level doubles and mixed doubles for all of the age groups from the under 13s right through to the under 19s. In total, 37 players from 11 different schools competed in the 20 finals. All finalists, together with many others who reached the later stages of the tournament, have been invited to go forward and represent Lanarkshire in the Scottish Secondary Schools’ National

Championships at Perth in May. Jim Logue, Chairman of North Lanarkshire Leisure, said: “I was impressed by the high standard of play and sportsmanship on display, which is a credit to the players and their schools alike. “It’s the first time that LASBA have held their Championships in Ravenscraig, which will be used as the badminton venue for the

International Children’s Gamed (ICG) in August. “The LABSA team will be involved in running the ICG badminton events so it was useful for them to have a trial run at the new sports facility. “The general feeling of players was that the

facility was the best that they had ever played in. Even the teachers and parents/friends who came to support the children left in awe. “Special thanks must go to our sponsors Airdrie Savings Bank and Ashaway Sports. And also to the Ravenscraig staff and the LASBA committee who worked tirelessly all weekend to make the 2011 Championships such a great success.” Trophies were presented to the winners and runners-up by representatives of North Lanarkshire Council, North Lanarkshire Leisure, Airdrie Savings Bank (sponsors), BADMINTONscotland, and the Scottish Schools Badminton Association, together with Jamie Neill and Keith Turnbull, the current Scottish Gents Doubles Champions, who are both from Lanarkshire. The championships were held over the weekend 29 and 30 January 2011 and the finals took place on Monday, 31 January.

BURNS THEME AT BLUE LIGHT DISCOThe Blue Light Disco initiative

was introduced to North Lanarkshire in early 2008 and has been built upon by strong partnerships within the locality area to improve and enhance opportunities for young people. It provides a safe environment for young people to enjoy themselves and gain access information and support from a variety of local partners. The locality team within Bellshill and surrounding districts is a prime example of partnership working at its best due to the unique variety of different agencies involved and the commitment they bring to improve the lives of young people within the district. The partnership is assisted by both statutory bodies and the voluntary sector and the details of the main driving force include: NHS Lanarkshire; Strathclyde Police; Bellshill & Mossend YMCA; Community Learning & Development; Action For Children, Young Carers; North Lanarkshire, Bellshill & District Youth and Community Forums; Bellshill & District Crime Prevention Panel; Strathclyde Fire & Rescue; North Lanarkshire Leisure and Side Kicx. The disco was held on Saturday 29 January, after being initially planned for December. The disco was given a Burns theme and the staff at the disco all wore tartan ¬- two pipers and a guest speaker addressed the haggis. Tesco

Bellshill contributed towards the evening by gifting a large haggis and Iron-bru. It also contributed towards great prizes which included an Ipod Touch, Digital Camera and a Mobile Smartphone. Bellshill & District Community Forum contributed by financially supporting the prizes as well as the event. The disco was a huge success more than 300 young people enjoying the party atmosphere. Other activities included massages, hand therapy, nail therapy and of course dance. There were also many information stalls which included Strathclyde Fire and Rescue, NHS Lanarkshire and Strathclyde Police. Local MP for the area, Tom Clarke came along in support and presented a cheque for Cash for Kids which was raised by the young people at previous discos and totalled £500. The young people also managed to collect nearly one hundred pounds on the night that will go towards charities in the future. The address to the haggis was well enacted by local speaked Kenny Matthews and went down a treat and brought a wee touch of the Burns spirit to the evening. Kenny contributed his payment of £50 to the Marie Curie Hospice in Glasgow were his mother is being treated. Tom Clark, MP for Coatbridge, Chryston & Bellshill said: “I was delighted to be asked along to

the disco on Saturday night and overwhelmed by the support the disco gets from the local people and partners. The young people really enjoyed the night and they are already looking forward to the next disco. “I am in support of this local initiative and even more so now as it is showing a real impact on youth related incidents in the area. A reduction of well over half the number of youth related incidents are reported to police on the nights the discos are running.” He added: “This is an excellent example of good partnership working.” Colin McFarlane, Association Manager of the YMCA in Bellshill & Mossend said: “I am involved with the Blue Light Disco along with the other partners and have worked on the project along with the team at the YMCA for a number of years now. The discos just seem to be getting better and better and we are now attracting over 300 young people. “I have worked on these types of projects for much of my career and would say that the Blue Light Disco is getting it just right by engaging with a large amount of young people. I am delighted at the success of the discos and look forward to the next one”.

Kirk James Charity Night With Orbiston Neighbourhood Centre

A big crowd turned out on Friday 21st January to

see Kirk James top the bill at a fundraising night for the Orbiston Neighbourhood Centre. Kirk is one of Scotland's top male vocal performers and was

joined by some special guests for an evening of songs and entertainment. The show took place at The Orb pub and helped to raise over £400! The Neighbourhood Centre often shares news about funding and grants received, but people

don't realise that they have to raise their own funds as well! A huge thanks to Kirk who entertained everyone with his range of songs. Kirk is pictured with some of the Centre's volunteers and supporters who turned out to enjoy the show.

A Golden Year for Young Pipers

A group of young musicians from across North Lanarkshire had

their success over the last twelve months recognised with a night in their honour on Wednesday 2 February. Depute Provost James Robertson hosted the evening at Kildonan Street, Coatbridge to mark the group’s remarkable achievements during the year. It started by winning the Novice Juvenile Grade at the British Pipe Band Championships and later

in the year they won the European Championships. The band was also awarded fourth place at the World Championships in Glasgow Green and went on to win a further four competitions. They won the British Championships on Saturday 26th June in Annan, seeing off challenges from 18 other bands. The band is made up of 23 pupils from primary 7 to sixth year. Depute Provost Robertson said: “We are extremely proud of their

achievements. The band has been together for five years which, as pipe bands go, means they are still in their infancy. “Piping and drumming is now embedded in our schools and over 150 young people now receive instruction on a weekly basis. What they have managed to achieve in such a relatively short space of time is remarkable and I am sure they will continue to go from strength to strength in the future.”

Depute Provost Robertson presents a commemorative glass plaque to Pipe Major Ross Cowan.

In the next few issues of the Wishaw Hub, we are going to be running a special feature entitled “…Past and Present” where we

will be looking closely at local towns and villages in Lanarkshire to highlight why these places are the real HUB of Lanarkshire

We hope to show that in days gone by, the Main Street of any town was ‘the hub’ of the community. It was the place where we would all go to shop, where we picked up some cakes from the local baker, and sourced juicy steaks for dinner from the local butcher. The Main Street was the local business directory – where everything you needed was easily found. Sadly however, the impact of large shopping malls and supermarkets has undoubtedly affected our ‘Main Street’ so it is vitally important in any community that we do not lose our Main Street.

To kick-off we have selected Newmains as the first of many local areas. The Village of Newmains, arguably a town in its own right, was formerly a mining community. Initially built by Lord Belhaven in the 19th century to house the workers of his nearby Coltness Ironworks, Newmains was actually built as a ‘dry’ town, and Lord Belhaven’s clean-cut, sober workers were known as some of the most productive in the Glasgow Iron and Steel Company.

In 1882-4, Frances Groome’s Ordnance Gazetteer of Scotland

described Newmains like this: “Newmains, a small town in Cainbusnethan parish, Lanarkshire, on the cross-railway from Morningside to Holytown, adjacent to the Coltness Ironworks, 2 miles ENE of Wishaw, and 6 by railway SE of Holytown. Standing amid a rich mineral tract, and inhabited chiefly by miners and ironworkers, it has a post office, with money order, savings’ bank, and telegraph departments, a railway station, the Coltness memorial quoad sacra church (1878), St Bridget’s Roman

Catholic church (1871; 300 sittings), a Roman Catholic school, and an elegant edifice, erected by the Coltness Ironworks Company at a cost of £3000, to serve as both a school and a chapel of ease. ...”The village had a bus depot of the McKindless Group from 1987 until its closure in February 2010. An open-cast coal mine is still located at nearby Morningside. And the Coltness works survived until 2004 as a railway sleeper manufacturing facility for Tarmac.

Newmains has had a local

football team since the 1800’s, the current Newmains United Community Football Club play in the Central Division Two of the Scottish Junior Football Association. Formed in 2006 their home ground is at Victoria Park, Overtown Road, Newmains, with a capacity of 2,300.

Historically, there have been several teams playing in Newmains, such as Newmains Thistle, Newmains Shamrock, Newmains Rovers, Newmains, Newmains Victoria, Newmains Juniors. Newmains Thistle became the first ever Junior League champions in 1891-92.

Two notable figures who

reached international stardom and hailed from Newmains include a famous Scottish footballer, Andrew Nesbit Wilson (1896–1973) and world famous Chemist Dr I Allan Brownlie (1922-2008) . Newmains is served by three primary schools, Newmains Primary and Nursery, St Brigid’s Primary, and Morningside Primary. Then of course there is the local Newmains Library, Newmains & District Community Centre, Newmains Health Centre and a dentists surgery.

Like other Main Streets, Newmains Main Street is relied upon by many of the local residents for the services on hand. The array of shops include butchers, hairdressing salons, hotfood takeaways, restaurants, greengrocers, newsagents, a coffee shop, solicitors, a bookmaker, pet shop and a local gym.

So please, show support for your local Main Street and help in keeping the community vibrant.

Your Stars...Aries Mar 20 - Apr 20 Taurus 20 Apr - 20 May Gemini 21 May - 21 Jun Cancer 22 Jun - 22 Jul Leo 23 Jul - 22 Aug Virgo 23 Aug - 22 Sep

Libra 23 Sep - 23 Oct Scorpio 24 Oct - 21 Nov Sagittarius 22 Nov - 21 Dec Capricorn 22 Dec - 19 Jan Aquarius 20 Jan - 18 Feb Pisces 19 Feb - 20 Mar

Cupid seems to have a thing about you right now. Nevertheless there will be those who’ll try to stop you in your tracks, if only to remind you of your duties and responsibilities. While you may be tempted to give them a piece of your mind, it’s probably best to get too wound up but rather take the rough with the smooth and keep plugging away

Are you prepared to follow your dream? Of course there is the erotic fantasy thing, and the desire to escape from it all through sensual self-indulgence, drugs and rock and roll. But with the Sun and Neptune coming together in the career zone of your solar chart, you need to keep your ears open since an opportunity to make your creative skills pay off is indicated.

There’s nothing wrong with working hard and there’s no use wondering too much whether you’re wasting your time on this or that. Right now it’s best just to get on with things. Tying up loose ends and finishing unfinished business will create the necessary space to seize the new opportunities on the way.

You may be a bit of a reluctant hero or heroine right now and so have trouble sitting still as a certain amount of limelight and recognition comes your way. With Venus in your opposite sign of Capricorn, others may tell you you’re looking even more adorable than usual although you may have certain anxieties that the attention you’re receiving has less to do with what you have to offer and more to do with how cute you are.

By nature you’re one of most honourable souls in the zodiac but right now it might be very tempting to be uncharacteristically economical with the truth to make the most of a promising financial or commercial opportunity. Others probably don’t appreciate how hard you’ve been working and while you may be all smiles and pleasantries, underneath your powder-puff and greasepaint you’re a little bit fed up with having to toe the line to get what you want.

These are peculiar times to be a Virgo. You’ve more fans and admirers than a Hollywood starlet and may have stopped blushing as others throw themselves at your feet. Not that you’ve got it all your own way but you’ve got some positive, interesting and maybe at times a little too exciting astrological activity going on around you.

As you try to balance the competing demands of home and loved ones this week, it looks like loved ones are going to win out. Flexing financial muscles won’t win anyone any favours but you could have your work cut out sustaining a velvet glove approach when you’d rather show your steely side.

Other people seem to hold all the important cards right now and some loved ones are behaving a bit goofy. Even your friends, who’ve been quite helpful of late, are somehow harder to get hold of. Some kind of confusion or misunderstanding, probably of a financial nature, could undermine a domestic or property matter that won’t seem to go away.

With Jupiter, your planetary ruler, romping through Aries, this should be a very favourable time for expressing yourself and having fun. Nevertheless, don’t forget the little details. You may feel you’re going over old ground but it’s important to tie up loose ends and do important paperwork. This will create the right foundations to enable you to take a big leap forward layer.

You’re usually so self-sufficient and self-contained that it can give you the willies to put yourself out on a limb for someone who may be a little unpredictable at the best of times. Nevertheless, while you sometimes exude a holier than thou exterior, astrologically speaking, you can be as randy as an old goat when stirred.

With so much powerful planetary activity in Aquarius, your Sun sign, this is set to be a busy time for you and you’re likely to be in demand. There’s nothing unusual about that but with Mercury and Neptune conjunct this week, you should feel inspired by an opportunity to share your vision with others and put your ideas across.

While shopping may be one way to take your focus off the ball of spaghetti that represents your choices right now, and a new outfit will come in handy, you really don’t need a new wardrobe. It’s at times like these you should travel light, especially with the Sun, Mars and Mercury with Neptune in Aquarius and the most strategic and sensitive area of your solar chart, while Jupiter, your planetary ruler moves through Aries, you’ll be too busy to reflect upon the life you’ll soon be leaving behind.

BASEBALLER WITH A CONSCIENCEBaseballer Gil Meche handed back $12m in wages to his team Kansas City Royals on the grounds that he “didn’t deserve it” and he’d “already made millions from them”.Fair play to him for his honesty. But imagine Scottish footballers started behaving in such a manner (i.e- handing back money they didn’t deserve). They’d be selling the Big Issue in no time.

GRAFFITI IN GLASGOWAs I walked through Glasgow city centre recently, I noticed a large sign in an empty shop window that said “BILL POSTERS WILL BE PROSECUTED”. Somebody had written below it “BILL POSTERS IS INNOCENT”.The next day someone wrote below it “BILL POSTERS IS NOT INNOCENT; HE STOLE MY CAT AND I WANT JUSTICE”.Only in Glasgow could people write this kind of stuff. It’s the best Glasgow graffiti I’ve read since “Rangers Is Gay”.

COLD CALLERSDespite the sticker on my front door clearly stating “No Cold Callers/Salespeople”, 2 fools clearly thought that by stating they worked for the government, they could bypass this. MPs

also “work for the government”, and quite frankly I wouldn’t want them on my doorstep either.Maybe it was because I was bored, but I let them in. They explained that they were here to ensure I got a “loft insulation grant” and wanted to carry out a “detailed examination” of my loft to see if I was eligible. The “detailed examination” simply involved one of them sticking his head into my loft and saying “Aye mate, you need new insulation”. Next thing I know, they produced an estimate for the work, which mysteriously they wanted me to sign. They assured me that it wasn’t a contract, even though it had the words “THIS IS A CONTRACT” written sneakily on the back of it.At this point they were forced to admit that they were indeed salespeople. One of them sensibly left my house, ashamed of himself. The other decided to take a bold stance and said; “I’m not leaving here until I’ve made a sale,” he said“That’s fine,” I calmly replied, walking

towards my front door “I’m locking YOU, in!”He quickly followed his mate out of the door, muttering something about me being “a nutter” under his breath. The moral to the story folks is this - beware cold callers. You didn’t invite them onto your property, you had no interest in buying their product, so treat them with caution. I have no objection to people trying to earn a living, but when they ignore signs on my front door stating that I do not want to buy, try and dupe me into signing a contract, then refuse to leave- they get it in Q’s Views.

AND FINALLYI think that Valentines Day is simply a conspiracy between Interflora and Hallmark to ensure that they make lots of money in the gap between Christmas and Easter whilst making single people feel 2 feet high. I am also at a loss as to what St Valentine had to do with love and romance, and why these companies feel the need to cash in on it. St Peter was a fisherman, so I am surprised that fish and chip shops haven’t tried to cash in on this fact. St Matthew was a tax collector, so I am delighted that the Inland Revenue haven’t tried to cash in on this fact. And of course, Jesus Christ was a carpenter, so IKEA could have an absolute field day with this one!But if you the reader can use The HUB

to publish a special message to your other half on Valentines Day, then there’s no way I’m leaving my fiancée out of it (especially when I write for the paper). Therefore, I’d like to wish my gorgeous and lovely fiancée Claire a Happy Valentines day. And yes Claire, I will get you a card too.

Chana Masala (Spicy Chickpeas) with Spinach

Chana masala with spinach is a vegetarian variation of a traditional and popular Indian food dish. If you don't have all the spices on hand, its OK to omit one of them without too much trouble, but don't omit more than two or you will have a completely different (and bland!) dish on your hands. For a heartier chana masala, toss in some tofu with the chickpeas and serve over rice.Prep Time: 5 minutesCook Time: 20 minutesTotal Time: 25 minutes

Do you think it's OK to go after a girl who's two years older than you are?

AAge is just a number. I am sure you have heard that many

times. Being at high school it can sometimes be much more difficult. I am sure if the tables were turned and it was a 15 year old girl wanting to date a 17 year old boy, people would see no problem with that. What you will find is that when you become adults this age difference becomes trivial. For now however, you need to know how this girl feels about you. From the sound of it she does sound interested, but you cannot be too sure. If you are mistaken, then this whole thing could blow up on your face. Kids can be cruel and we all know it.Best thing is to try find out what she feels about you. If the feeling is the same then go for it, and don’t let the age be an issue. I am sure there are plenty of guys who will be jealous. Be strong and good luck.

the silliest thing, I don’t even remember what it was about. We haven’t talked since. It has been two weeks now and I really miss

her. What should I do?

A There is only one way to solve this, talk to her. Whatever the

argument was about, I am sure if you apologise enough, tell her how much you miss her and that you regret what happened, she will forgive you. If you're too nervous to pick up the phone, perhaps you could send her a little present or a special card and ask her if you can have a chat. Remember, if she is a good friend she will want to get your friendship back on track as much as you do.

on running away. I don’t know what I am supposed to do or say to her. Please help.

A You need to make her realise the consequences of running

away. The risks she could be taking and the dangers of sleeping rough. The parents really need to be engaged about this and everyone must try and resolve the problems and realise a positive outcome.

In our motoring coverage this issue, we felt it was only fitting to pay

tribute to the 2009 car of the year (as voted by Auto Express) – the new Ford Fiesta. The Ford Fiesta is a car that you could argue is the modern day equivalent to the VW Beatle – you see them everywhere. When people think about a small car, they automatically think Fiesta. It may have the same compact footprint but the all-new Fiesta, has improved space, better specification, greater safety and really smart Kinetic styling. Small car buyers these days want the looks, the feel and the specification of a larger car, but in a smaller package and at lower prices. Prices start at around £11,000 for the

Fiesta Studio, rising to over £15,000 for the Fiesta Titanium Individual. Like all car manufacturers these days, there is a long list of extra cost options that accompany the range, whilst not necessarily needed, they will push the prices higher. Like most Fords, there are many variants to select from and these are made up of three and five-door versions and sales are traditionally split 50/50 between the two body styles. Fiesta engines There are revised or new four petrol and two diesel engine options. The petrol engines are expected to be the main sellers, 1.25-litre 60PS and 82PS units plus the 1.4-litre 96PS engine and the all-new 1.6-litre 120PS power plant. The TDCi diesel engines are 1.4-litre

68PS and a 1.6-litre 90PS units. In addition there are the three and five-door 1.6-litre TDCi ECOnetic thrifty fuel and CO2 saving variants. Manual and automatic transmissions are also in the line-up. Not all engines are offered with each specification. Design and practicality Lighter in weight but stronger and with a stiffer body, the new Fiesta feels and looks a much improved car. The overall styling whether it is three or five-door with its rising waistline giving it an aerodynamic wedge shape with a mixture of Kinetic muscular and angular styling lines makes the new Fiesta look larger than the previous version even though the overall length is more or less the same at 3,958mm. A nice combination of textures and materials and a upper centre console Ford is very proud off. It takes on the design of a mobile phone and all the functions are quite logical once you have taken a few minutes to find your way around the system. On the down-side the folding rear seats do not quite fold flat, the back of the rear seats is metal rather than having a carpet covering and there is

no front passenger’s side roof grab handle. The boot capacity is a reasonable at 295-litres. If you choose to have the car with a puncture repair kit or 281-litres with the no cost option spare wheel fitted. With the rear seat folded, there is up to 979-litres of cargo space. Driving Effectively, there are two types of Fiesta – a standard set-up with more compliant suspension and speed-sensitive steering, and the firmer set-up on the Zetec S, which has consistently weightier steering. Both set-ups are superb, but our preference is for the standard car. The suspension is soft enough to smooth out lumpy roads – even the worst bumps in town can do nothing to upset it – yet the car is still wonderfully agile and involving.

It is a family business - the statement is in fact very true. Rival kickboxing club

set up in 2007 by father Stuart Allan for his world title holder sons, the dynamic duo, Sam Allan and younger brother Scott. Between them they have collected an incredible fifteen world titles - eat your heart out!

INTERVIEW WITH SCOTT ALLANKal: “Well Scott that is some record. My jaws dropped and my dentures are lying by your feet, can you kick them over? Where shall I begin. OK, at what age did you start your training?”Scott: “Well Kal, I was about three and my mother claims I was holding on to the sofa, a dummy still in my mouth and trying to do kicks.”Kal: “That’s incredible! I think I was potty training then, but I suppose kicks are good. What was your first MA and where did you train?Scott: “Allanton Welfare Hall and it is always been kick boxing for me Kal.”Kal: “Is there a belt grading in kick boxing Scott?”Scott: “Aye, same as in any other MA Kal.”Kal: “At what age did you feel you had natural talent for kick boxing?”Scott: (after some thought) “Well, three Kal? Ha-ha.”Kal: “OK Scott, some big questions. At what age did you win your first title, where and when?”Scott: “Ah, let me phone my dad. When was it?” (Scott on the phone to his father). “Dad says in 2001. Let me ask your mum he says. Dad says he’ll be down in 20minutes.”Kal: “OK, so the big man’s coming down here, brilliant, right. What’s your most important title Scott?”Scott: “To me Kal they are all important (all 11 world titles) but my most cherished title is my WKA Pro-am Bantamweight title which I won in April 2009 in the Zico Bar, Wishaw, against Mateuoz Rajewski from Poland.”Kal: “Excellent. What impact did this have on you?”Scott: “I was in the Daily Record and The Sun newspapers, two pages in each one. It was a definite life changing time.”Kal: “So, what is for the future, I don’t think that there are any titles left for you.”Scott: “Well Kal, I am fully pro now and I am undefeated in my career so far, oh yeah, and I am only 18, so there’s years to go yet.”Kal: “Any advice for young wanna-be champions?”

Scott: “Yes. As rivals we are World Champions, trained by World Champions. Currently we have three World Champions: Amy Boyle aged 9; Callum McGregor aged 11; and Callum Reynold also aged 11.”Kal: “Amazing. Cheers Scott.”

INTERVIEW WITH SAM ALLANKal: “As the big brother you must be proud of your younger brother’s achievements. Do you feel you were an inspiration to him?” Sam: “Aye, Kal totally. I taught him everything he knows, but somewhere along the way he made up some of his own moves. On occasion I have taken a couple of his moves and I have also won a few World titles myself, well, why break the mould. Haha. “Nah Kal, we both compete but in different weight divisions so sometimes you can have more competitions at a certain weight, but in no way does it make it easier. “I still train very hard every day, we all do, usually six days, sometimes three times a day, we break up the training, some weights, then running steady midday, then maybe spar in the evening.”Kal: “What about your diet, anything special?”Sam: “I like the odd pizza and beer sometimes. In general when I’m not fighting but if I have a fight coming up I am super strict. I have got it down to a science, it becomes religious.”Kal: “Sam, how many World Titles have you got and what one are you most proud of?”Sam: “Four World Titles, Pro-am 67KG (Welterweight) 4th December 2009 – Knock Out, Round 2, Ronan McSeveney.”Kal: “I am also told you are an extremely talented footballer, care to comment?”Sam: “Well, I played with a few big clubs but in my heart it was always Kickboxing for me.”Kal: “I see you have an event coming up? “ Sam: “Yes, it is on the 26th February at Dalziel Park Hotel, Motherwell. It’s my pro-debut, fighting at 67kg Welterweight. It’s going to be dynamite.”Kal: “You mean like fireworks and shooting stars?”Sam: “Aye Kal. Stars alright, it’s what the other boy will be seeing looking up from the canvas, defeat, stars.”We both laugh.Kal: “Finally Sam, three questions for you. First, who is your inspiration?Sam: “My inspiration has got to be my hard working family when I was growing up.

If you want something you need to work hard for it and that inspired me to win and achieve what I have. Obviously when growing up I was also watching Bruce Lee, Jean Claud Van Dam and other movie stars that also inspired me.”Kal: “Your father has been a vital part of where you are today, just to highlight his importance can you tell me what role he has played and to what capacity he has been involved with in your training?”Sam: “My dad has been vital, taking timeout of work and taking us to places to train like Paisley, Dundee, Perth, Glasgow, all over the country. He has always made sure we have a gym to train at to become the best fighters possible.”Kal: “Who is training you for your upcoming fight? Sam: “My trainer for my professional career is Jan Cree. Jan has been there and done it winning Pro-Scottish, British, Commonwealth, Euro and World titles. “I believe he is the man that will help me do the same, helping me achieve my dreams and goals to become Pro World Champ. There you go guys. This is proof that with single minded focus, ambition, hard-work and the desire to be the best you can become the best. You can become the world’s champion many times over and when you have two world champions in the same family and so young too, that has to be admired and applauded. Hats off to you guys especially for Mr Stuart Allan, without your continued love and support for your sons they would not be where they are today.

Welcome back to the latest edition of the golf hub, recently we have just seen the completion of the desert swing, good to see Tiger Woods

making an appearance in Dubai. His final round was tarnished with a spitting offence that he seen him having to pay a fine and apologise to the public. As a big fan of Tiger I hope this is the only blip in his season and he can concentrate on some terrific golf. This years winner at the desert classic was big hitting Alvaro Quiros who really had a bit of everything in his four rounds, on day one he had a triple bogey 8 and in the final round he had a hole in one. Quiros pictured with his trophy.

Following on from the success of the DI9 iron, Wilson introduce their new DI11 to the market.

Wishaw made it three wins out of three against their local rivals

this season but this was a far from easy victory against a hard working Newmains side who battled right to the final whistle. With both sides desperate for competitive action, not having played since 20 November and Victoria Park being declared unplayable, the match was played on the 3G pitch at Sir Matt Busby Sports Centre, Bellshill. The ‘visitors’ were first to show, a quick lob by JP McBride finding Coffey in the clear but the ball bounced awkwardly and MacAlpine was on hand to clear the danger. In 12 minutes Fitzpatrick hit the bar for Wishaw from a free kick. Not to be outdone, Duddy’s shot did likewise for Newmains in 18 minutes after Jas McBride was caught in possession. Newmains’ McCormack was booked for a foul on Meechan just on the half hour mark. Stevenson was unfortunate not to open the scoring after a fine run in from the right but his acute shot somehow stayed out when a goal looked certain, so at half-time, still no score. The deadlock was finally broken 10 minutes into the second half when a JP McBride pass released Grant down the right before his lofted cross was

headed home by Coffey.Wishaw almost pulled of an identical move two minutes later but this time McAlpine was alert to the danger. With Wishaw threatening to take control Newmains’ Murray levelled the scores with an outstanding spinning strike from 30yards that smashed the ball wide of Gallagher.Coffey put Wishaw ahead again in 72 minutes before JP Mcbride appeared

to put the match beyond the home side in 77 minutes with a deceptive half volley. To their credit Newmains continued to push forward, Rafferty pulling one back in 86 minutes from a corner to set up a nervous last few minutes with Wishaw content to run the clock down to secure the points.Newmains – McAlpine, Hurlls, Roy, McCormack, Krivokapic, Murdoch,
