Welcome back to Term 4. I hope that the holiday break was a restful time for all and importantly I hope that the break enabled everyone the opportunity to recharge the batteries in preparation for a busy Term 4.TRANSCRIPT
Dear Members of the St Patrick‘s Family, Welcome back to Term 4. I hope that the holiday break was a restful time for all and importantly I hope that the break enabled everyone the opportunity to recharge the batteries in preparation for a busy Term 4. Over the next few weeks there are a significant number of important events taking place that will involve many people within the St. Patrick‘s College Community. These events include:-
Co-curricular Photo Day
2012 Orientation Night
Track and Field Spirit Assembly
Year 5 Camp
2012 Orientation Testing Day
Staff Retreat
Verification Day
AIC Track and Field Carnival
Showcase
Parents and Friends Jazz and Shiraz afternoon
Year 11 Leadership Retreat This is just a sample of what is ahead during Term 4. With this in mind it is imperative that everyone starts from Day 1 and that the students approach their studies from Week 1. My thanks to the staff, parents and students who were involved in a range of activities over the holidays. All events went well and a good time was had by all. I also welcome back Ms Katie Spencer and Mr Geoff Samuels, who were on leave last term. In a previous edition of the Calling I introduced the new Charter to the St. Patrick‘s College Community and indicated that during the course of the year I would provide further details about the Charter and importantly its intents. Central to the Charter are four Touchstones of Catholic Schools in the Edmund Rice Tradition. They are:-
Liberating Education
Gospel Spirituality
Inclusive Community
Justice and Solidarity Over the coming weeks I will provide some further details surrounding each of the Touchstones. This week I will examine Liberating Education. I wish everyone the best for the upcoming term, in particular our Year 12 students who begin their final term at St. Patrick‘s College. Have a great week. God Bless
Dr Michael Carroll College Principal
6 October 2011 No. 30
We open hearts and minds, through quality teaching and learning experiences so that through critical reflection and engagement each person is hope filled and free to build a better world for all. To allow for this to occur, St. Patrick‘s College is called to:
Encourage all members of the school community to work to the best of their abilities to realise their potential and strive for equity and success.
Serve the needs of each person through authentic relevant and creative learning and teaching experiences.
Provide a learning culture within a safe and healthy environment that enables students to experience success.
Provide a holistic education integrating faith with culture and learning.
Give priority to the allocation of resources to provide for students with particular needs.
Enable students to experience and value a critical awareness of justice and peace issues.
Welcome back to everyone to Term 4. The year has flown with so much activity and I hope everyone had the chance
to have some quality time with friends and family over the holidays. We welcomed back Mrs Travers, Ms Spencer
and Mr Samuels this week from their leave last term. We also have four new young men join our student body this
week – Jordan Butler, Ruben Sullivan, Shaun Bezzina and Vince Bezzina. I hope they have a very successful journey
at St Pat‘s. Our four Year 11 students who have been on exchange to USA and Canada – Joshua Smith, Liam
Anderson, Liam Hannant and Tom Huth – returned to school this week, full of excitement and stories aplenty.
Two staff members have been having medical treatment over the holidays. Br Col is back in hospital and Mrs Cotton
has been having a series of treatment. We certainly hold both in our prayers and thoughts and wish them all the
best for a successful recovery.
Term four is the shortest of the year but certainly not less in importance. The Year 12s only have about 15 lessons
left in each subject and the other year levels do not have too many more lessons in each of their subjects. It is really
important that every student makes the most of this term to finish the year as best as they can. Parents can help by
sitting down with their son and working out some goals for this term. It is great to aim for something and to work out
some actions to try to achieve them. The process is a very positive one for our young men. We should all be encour-
aging our boys to make the most of every lesson they have left this term, to avoid distractions and to work consist-
ently. How well we finish this term will have a significant impact on the start of next year in so many aspects.
Welcome back to Term 4. I hope everyone had a relaxing break and used the time to spend with family and
friends.
Years 5, 6 and 7 ORIENTATION EVENING will be held next Monday evening 10 October. This is the first official function for over 160 families new to St Patrick‘s and hence a very important occasion in our College calendar. All current Year 11 students are invited to attend to assist with the orientation of the younger students. Current Year 6 and 7 students are NOT required to attend the evening. We also need parents to assist with the evening and I ask
any parent who is able to help to contact Mrs. Sandra Fowlie in the Student Office (3631 9070).
Leadership 2012 – The Process of Leadership selection for 2012 has commenced. Staff and students are in the pro-cess of nominating and selecting the College leaders this week. The process for the selection of House Leaders will occur over the next few weeks. All Year 11 students will attend a compulsory Leadership Retreat from Monday, 24 October, to Tuesday, 25 October. On Wednesday 26 October the Year 11 students will spend the day with their
House Deans in a formation program that will see them plan for their role as leaders of their respective Houses.
AIC Track and Field – Good luck to all our athletes who are competing in the AIC Track and Field events over the next week. All Year 8 to12 students are travelling to QSAC on Tuesday 18 October to support our athletes. It is expected that all Year 8 -12 students will attend school in full College uniform on that Tuesday and positively sup-port our athletes. Students will be transported to QSAC by bus and will return by 3.00pm. Food is expensive at SAF so I encourage students to bring their own food and drink. School hats will also be beneficial for the morning sun at
the stadium. This is a special events day and any student absent will require to present a Medical Certificate.
Year 11 Formation Program Term 4: Over the next few weeks all Year 11 students will participate in a series of talks provided by Drug Arm, SEAT (Spinal Injuries Association) and the Queensland Police Services. The talks will hopefully create an awareness of the impact of Drugs and the risk factors associated with them, underage drinking and the associated violence that can occur and the legal complications that are associated with this type of behav-
iour. Any question please do not hesitate to call.

Welcome back to all students in what is likely to be a busy final term. It is pleasing to report that students returned
from the break refreshed and have worked well throughout this first week.
Year 12 students face an important few weeks. In most subject areas there will only be one assessment task remain-
ing. Consequently, it is unlikely that students at this stage could experience substantial movement from one level of
achievement to another. However, a strong finish on these final pieces is extremely important. It is important to re-
member that in terms of OP calculations, it is not just the actual Level of Achievement which counts, but where the stu-
dent is placed in the rank order for each subject. A strong performance on final pieces of assessment will contribute
to students finishing as high on the rank order as possible.
Although final exams are still some time away, it is prudent to commence any preparation as early as possible. A
strong finish to the year is desirable for students in all year levels. It is the College‘s expectation that students attend
school until the final day. If students leave early, it is not feasible for them to complete exams before the scheduled
date.
Could I ask all parents to go through the term 4 assignment calendar with their sons. Overall, the submission of as-
signments in 2011 has been quite good. The numbers of students who are being given Academic detentions for late
work continues to decrease. I do appreciate the support of all parents in assisting the teaching staff in their expecta-
tion that students are aware of assignment deadlines whether for final copies or drafts.
The College 1 to 1 laptop program continues to develop, with more and more units of work being released in an
electronic format. One area which has slipped over the course of the year is the care and storage of the netbooks.
Students and parents are reminded that when the computers are not being used they must be stored either in the stu-
dents locker or bag. Boys are now in the habit of leaving the computers sitting on tables, on top of lockers, or on the
ground. They are quite expensive, costing approximately $900 to replace. Unfortunately, if they are damaged or
stolen, as a result of not being stored correctly, the College will have no option but to ask for the money to be
reimbursed.
Good luck to all students in the final term.

This morning I had the great pleasure and privilege of visiting the Magoffin family. I met Carmen Magoffin, wife of Peter Magoffin, an old boy of St Patrick‘s who unexpectedly and sadly passed away during the holiday period. Pe-ter‘s son-in-law, Matthew Spatuzzo, is also an old boy and Peter‘s grandson, Will Freidman, is a current Year 8
O‘Rourke student.
The reason I was invited to Carmen‘s house was the incredibly generous gift left by Peter to our Paddies Van. Peter‘s family asked for donations to the Paddies Van in lieu of flowers at Peter‘s funeral, and today, Carmen handed me
$1000 to go towards our important ministry to those in our community doing it tough.
I didn‘t know Peter, but in my short time over a coffee this morning, I understood that I should not have been surprised by Peter‘s or Carmen‘s generosity. Carmen clearly is a lady of deep faith, and Peter sounds like a bloke whose com-pany that I and many others would have thoroughly enjoyed. I heard about a man who clearly loved his family, loved a good time, didn‘t mind a quiet punt and felt a desire to support those in need. He was a regular volunteer for the Paddies Van, and Anthony Ryan, who began the Paddies Van and is a past Assistant Principal Mission of St Patrick‘s,
remembers Peter as a man very generous with his time, and someone who loved a chat.
The experience of meeting Peter‘s family has reminded me of the wonderful work that the Paddies Van does. It has reminded me of the great benefit of the Paddies Van for not only those marginalised in our society through financial disadvantage or mental illness, but also for our students, staff and wider community. Truly, spending time with the pa-trons of the Paddies Van is a transformational experience. It is humbling and confronting, and makes the volunteer look far more deeply at the concept of dignity than a dictionary definition can give. It is simply an education like no other. Experiencing the Paddies Van is simultaneously grounded in absolute reality and a deep sense of spirituality. It is an expression of our faith, in action. Speaking to Peter‘s family taught me that Peter understood this, and when he
took his grandson with him, he was sharing a gift and an education.
Can I take this opportunity to encourage our community to once again get behind the Paddies Van – students, staff and parents. It is simple. Give Helen Righetti a call on 36319014 or email [email protected], or simply pop in to the Student Office. Currently, we are particularly looking for Year 8, 9 and 10 boys to help with cooking a barbie at Decker Park on Tuesday mornings and providing a meal for young children at Humpybong State School on
a Thursday morning. Make a difference today.
On behalf of St Patrick‘s, the Paddies Van volunteers and patrons, I would like to pass on our condolences to the Ma-
goffin family and sincerely thank them for this very generous gift. It will certainly be put to very good use.
On a final note, another way you can support the Paddies Van as well as some other extremely good causes is to come along to Doomben on Saturday for the annual Mimiki Race Day. For more information, see www.mimikifoundation.org.au. It will be a great day, and something tells me Peter Magoffin may have enjoyed it as
well. If you have any sure things, feel free to send them through to me!
Have a great week.

Australian Catholic Bishops Social Justice Sunday Statement – 25th September
“Building Bridges, Not Walls: Prisons and the Justice System”
Prayer written by a Prison Chaplain
God our Creator, We acknowledge the ancestors and original owners of this land, a land of wealth and freedom, far horizons, mountains, forest and shining sand. Maker and spirit of earth and all creation, let your love possess our land and may we share in faith and friendship, the gifts unmeasured from your land. We pray for all the imprisoned, those on the inside, whose confinement is obvious and those on the out-side, whose imprisonment is subtler. We reach out in grace knowing that human divisions are false, that we are not the innocent praying for the guilty or the right praying for the wrong, but people praying for people, the hurt remembering the hurt, the failure reaching out in love too the failure in a single community. We remember those who seek to change difficult life stories, midwives of hope and agents of grace. We remember and pray for the victims of crime on the outside, knowing that we do not have the luxury of black and white, the simple answer or the easy question. We remember and pray for the countless victims on the inside, casualties of uneven playing fields and difficult starts, dreamless futures and nightmare pasts. We remember the whole criminal justice system and its process, those caught up in it, those on every side and in every moment of it. We pray a blessing on all those who enter prison. We pray a blessing on all those who wait on the outside. We pray a blessing on the world community. Teach us to deal with each other with compassion. Keep all of us ever mindful of your law of love so that we may temper justice with mercy, exercise control with compassion. May our motives and our actions conform to your will and fulfil your purposes all the days of this life so that we may share in the life to come. Amen

need a little help to do this.
As a host of a top ranked iTunes Self-Help podcast, Scott has learned a few things about getting people off the
sofa and moving, which is exactly how ‗Face Your Passion‘ was invited to present in Australia. The LIVE Workshop
will be in Sydney but you can log onto the website to find out more details.
In January of 2011, Rodney Appleby became a graduate of the online version of ‗Face Your Passion‘, found himself inspired to help young people and decided to team up with Mr. Smith to make it happen. The result? Profits from the Face Your Passion Live Workshops will be donated by MTM In Oz to support Rodney Appleby in a charity bike ride for Hands Across The Water.
