FETEThere has been a buzz and really positive energy around the school this week as we reflect upon the success of the Fete. It was a magnificent day with so much to do and see. Everywhere I looked there were excited squeals of laughter whether it be from the rides, dunk the teacher, chocolate bed or winning a prize from the cent auction. The crowds were thoroughly entertained by the students throughout the day, reminding us of the amazingly talented students that we have in our school.
To everyone who volunteered their time to make this community event so successful – thank you!!! Your time and efforts are truly appreciated. To the P & F Organising Committee (Amanda Ryan, Jess Russell, Nicole Ainger, Jeff Bauman, Kyelie Baxter, Nikki Beaver, Matthew Gisler & Jessica Gisler) our heartfelt thanks goes out to all of you. You should feel very proud of what you have achieved.

MOTHER’S DAYHappy Mother’s Day to all the Mums in our community. I hope your children spoiled you last Sunday. There aren’t words to say thank you to the Mums for all that they do. Once again thank you to the P & F for organising the Mother’s Day stall. Some amazing gifts for Mum.
NAPLANThe annual NAPLAN tests were conducted last week. The students took these tests within their stride. These tests give us good general feedback and we can look at trends, areas of strength and areas for growth to further support the work that is being done day in and day out. Parents are reminded that they are only one assessment tool that we

Next week, students from around the College will receive information about a program/activity called the Refu.Me challenge. This challenge is organised by the Australian Lutheran World Service. The challenge is designed to raise
use to gauge student results and report to parents. These coupled with portfolios, conferences and report cards form part of a comprehensive reporting program.
100% HOPE CHOIRRecently the staff and students were thoroughly entertained by a Ugandan Choir. 100% Hope is a charity organisation in Uganda that is giving education and hope to underprivileged children. If you would like to know more about the work and potentially contribute to their work, please follow the link to their website. http://www.100-hope.org/
ACTIVE SCHOOL TRAVELAs part of the initiative to improve car park congestion, parents and children are invited to walk to school with Mr Schumacher on Tuesday mornings. We will meet in Martin Sheils Park (across the road from The Plantation Café) and walk to school. Parents are encouraged to walk with their children too. Please do not drop your children off at the park unattended. We will depart the park at 7:45 am. I look forward to seeing you there and together reduce congestion and increase our steps for the day. On Friday, 31 May we will have a special assembly to officially launch Active School Travel. Tuesday, 4 June will be our active school
travel day with lots of prizes for those who use some of the alternate ways to get to school. These include – walking to school, riding bikes, catching a bus or car-pooling.
NOMINATE A TEACHERAt St Andrews we have many outstanding teachers in our College and Early Learning Centre. Why not take the time to recognise these teachers by nominating them now for the 2019 TEACHX Awards, formerly the Excellence in Teaching Awards. TEACHX celebrates excellence in teaching and promotes the important work of registered teachers across all schooling sectors and early learning centres in Queensland. Nominees will have their profile featured on the Queensland College of Teachers’ Teacher Stories website.
Winners will be announced at an evening ceremony in Brisbane on Thursday 24 October, on the eve of World Teachers’ Day in Queensland. Nominations close Friday 26 July.

Sport NewsHINTERLAND CROSS COUNTRYCongratulations to all students who competed at the Hinterland Cross Country last week. We had over 20 Junior School students compete. A special mention to Mia Leyland who placed third in the 10 Years Girls 2km event. This was Mia’s first year at Cross Country so this is an outstanding result. Georgia Whale and Mia Leyland will be competing at the Regionals trials in a few weeks and we wish them all the best.

awareness/empathy for refugee issues and to raise funds in order to send refugee children to school.
Students will be given a Refu.Me “passport” which outlines 1 of 10 challenges that they can choose to be involved in. Some of the challenges will take place at school. Some are better suited to take place at home. We will be encouraging all students to undertake their challenge in Week 8. Between then and now, students are to seek sponsorship to fulfil their challenge. I am conscious that there are a multitude of programs/initiatives that seek your financial support, so we will be asking students to raise sponsorship from people outside of their immediate family.
Jesus once remarked, “the poor you will always have with you.” This comment was not a discouraging comment, as in, “give up now – you will never succeed” – but rather, “keep on keeping on because this is an area that always needs work and attention.”
When I consider the plight of refugees around the world, I know this is an area that needs our work and attention. Whatever money we can raise through this program will give refugee students a chance to further themselves in a way not normally possible. I love that this program is not simply about the money – it also provides students a taste of what living as a refugee would be like.
Thanks in advance for your help and support of this program. Remember to encourage your child/children to seek sponsorship from people outside of your immediate family.

THE IMPORTANCE OF PLAYThere are many articles, websites and parenting gurus who espouse the benefits of play for our children and our International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme also has a lot to say about the role of play in children’s development and learning. The IBO website states the following:
• Play is essential for young children’s cognitive, social, emotional, physical and brain development.
• Through play, children construct meaning and define themselves as members of a learning community.
Through play we are giving children an opportunity to develop the key skills (approaches to learning) that they will need now and later in life. The foundational skills of resolving conflict, respecting others, accepting responsibility, risk-taking and safety, codes of behaviour, thinking, questioning, observing, motor skills, spatial awareness, etc can all be developed through play.
On Thursday 23 May we are celebrating play and being under 8. Please see the attached flyer for more information.
Parents and younger siblings. are most welcome to join our afternoon of play and celebration.

From Mini Musos, Semitones through to The Saints, children were singing, dancing, acting and making music in front of appreciative audiences.
