Hi Everyone,

August brings with it the Annual Bush Ball, this year’s event will be at Oolloo Station and is set to be a great night/evening. If you are

able to make it, please come along and support the club so we can make it a night to remember.

We are coming to the end of the Dry Season, but I must say it has felt like one of the best Dry Season’s I can remember for con-

sistent cooler weather. As usual, no-one can say with certainty just when we may see some rain, on one hand, the rural area could

definitely do with some rain to top up water supplies, however it is always good to stretch out the dry as much as possible.

It would be good to see some trips advertised to fill in September through to the end of the year, so if you have a free weekend and

are keen to head out for a local get away, please be in contact so we can get a trip arranged. I will be looking at running a couple of

day or weekend trips in the coming months, but others would also be encouraged.

We still have some vacancies on important Committee Positions. If anyone can put their hand up to assist with the Secretary posi-

tion, it would be greatly appreciated. If you can make it along to most general meetings, as well as Committee meetings to take

minutes, as well as monitor the secretary email, then you be greatly contributing to the running of the club. Hopefully we can fill

this position soon.

We will be coming up to the AGM in the coming months also, which means a new Committee will be elected, you will see an email

come out running through all the committee positions and their duties. I ask all members to give some serious thought to putting

their hand up to join the Committee. I can honestly say that with a Full Committee, none of the rolls are very onerous, attending 1x

Committee Meeting per month and assisting with monitoring of emails, or assisting with back ground tasks is all the additional work

that is required. So please have a think and nominate for a position on the Committee at the next AGM. A full Committee is really

important for a great Club to thrive.

Membership renewals are now overdue, I notice there are still several outstanding. If you are keen to remain financial members

(which we would all love to see), then please head over to the club website and renew your membership now.

Another thing to keep in our minds is 2021 being the Clubs 50th Birthday. We will be looking at having a great Celebration, a couple

of extended trips organized during the year, along with special memorabilia merchandise etc to help recognize this amazing mile-

stone of the club.

Have fun and get dirty,

Stuart Wright

Oolloo Station Trip Report

Participants:

Stuart, Kylie, Trinity and Scarlett Wright

Kat Wessling and Eric Boyle

Dawn and Daniel Richardson

Friday 26th

July

We woke up got the last few things that we needed and then we started to drive to Noonamah to see everyone. Dad

filled up with fuel and after a radio check we were on the road at 9.10am. We stopped at Adelaide River for a quick pit

stop and then we continued on at 10.50am. We arrived at Oolloo Station and looked around for a camp site. We found

one on the edge of the Billabong under some trees. From here I could see lots of birds, ducks, pelicans and plovers. I

had fun using Kat’s bird app to figure out what the birds were. We set up camp and had lunch then sat around and

talked for a while. Mary and Richard, who were also camping here with some other friends came by for a chat. We went

to have a look at the camp kitchen and other facilities.

After this we lit the fire so that we had coals to cook our dinner. Us kids went fishing in the billabong. Someone caught

a Barra but not us. We cooked our spuds on the fire and enjoyed looking at the stars while we were sitting around the

campfire eating dinner. Dad brought some ice creams which he shared for dessert. After dinner it got cool so we (Trin

and Scarlett) got ready for bed and went to read for a while. The adults sat around the fire and talked and drank for a

while longer before they went to bed.

Saturday 27th

July

We got up and we all cooked our breakfasts. All camps cooked bacon and eggs for breakfast. After we had eaten we

did our dishes. Mid morning we all jumped in our cars and drove to Butterfly Gorge. The car park was crowded. So

once we had found somewhere to park we walked into the Gorge. Part of the walk we had to walk across some water. I

was tall enough so my shorts didn’t get wet but Scarlett had to get wet shorts. We had to take our shoes off to cross the

water and the sand on the other side was really hot. Lots of people were swimming in the Gorge. We walked back out

and decided to drive to Crystal Falls (Cascades). Dad led the way because he knew where to go. We got to crystal

Falls and ate our lunch at the car. After lunch we walked down to the river. Daniel and Dawn walked up the river to

have a fish and the rest of us sat in water at the falls and had a drink. There were plenty of people camped on the edge

of the river.

On our way back to camp we called into the Douglas Daly Tourist park where we went to the toilet and the boys bought some more beer. Back to camp and we stopped up at the homestead. Here we stayed for happy hour and had some food and drinks. While Kat, Dawn and Mum discussed ideas for the Bush Ball us kids had fun learning how to crack a whip, had a ride in a tractor and helped put some feed out to attract the cows into the stock yards. After this we headed back to camp to cook dinner. We lit a camp fire to sit around

Page 20: Issue 7 — AUGUST 2019 Darwin Branch Established 1971 · Page 27 August GM Minutes Special Features Page 10 Club History by Derek McCarthy Page 15 Members Rig by Jason Colquhoun

and here we sat to eat our dinner. We had ice cream for dessert again and looked in the Billabong with a torch to see if

we could see any croc eyes. By this time it was getting late so we headed to bed.

Sunday 28th

July

Us kids got up before Mum and Dad and we got dressed and we walked up to the homestead. We were able to go for

a ride around the property in the Station owners’ buggy. They let us each have a turn driving the buggy. They also

took us down to the river and took us for a ride in their boat. When we had finished we walked back to camp, to find

that Mum and Dad had packed up while we had been busy all morning and we had missed out on the pancakes for

breakfast. Once pack up was completed we directed everyone on how to get to the river and we went for a look. Back

to camp and hooked up the trailers. We stopped by the homestead to say thank you and goodbye. While the adults

were chatting we relaxed in the hammock and practiced our whip cracking skills again.

From here we drove to Adelaide River where we stopped for a late lunch. It was really busy here. Once we had eaten

we said goodbye to everyone and we headed for home.

It was a very fun weekend for us kids and a nice relaxing weekend for the adults.

July is done and dusted and with the last day of the month, it seems the humidity is creeping in. For the Saturday the 20 th of July how-ever, the dry season turned it on for the Social catch up lunch at Lola’s Pergola. One of Darwin’s quirkier establishments, the venue offered a relaxed atmosphere waterside with chilled music, and great company. Kylie, Eric and I had the pleasure of catching up with long time members, John and Shan, new members Gina, Rodney, and the opportunity for all of us to get to know Anita and share with her, a little about our club. Burgers and salads all around, we had the chance to chat about up coming trips (I may have spruiked the Bush Ball like I had shares in it) and easily lost a couple of hours relaxing by the water. Thanks to all who joined us, was a lovely lunch with great company.

August’s social is the Bush Ball @ Oolloo Station – see below for details and should you require more info, please get in contact.

September the social crew have planned an evening at the Deck chair cinema for Friday 6th September – 7:30 pm. Tickets are availa-ble via

Trip Leader’s Guide for Short Trips Leading trips is an important task that club members undertake. This guide has been developed to help

trip leaders understand the responsibilities of a trip leader. Contact the Tripping-up Coordinator with any

queries.

Initial Interest & Trip Coordination

· Contact Tripping-up coordinator ([email protected]) or any member of the tripping-up commit-

tee if you are interested in running a trip.

· Discuss the trip concept and location, if previous trips have been run in this area and if there are any

electronic maps, trip summary sheets or other useful information.

· Check whether preparation is required for trip (eg permits, keys, advance recon). Your committee

member will assist you in this requirement.

· Fill in the on-line Trip Proposal Form (http://www.tlccdarwin.com.au/trips.html). This will automatically

email the Tripping Coordinator who will then ensure an email is sent out to all club members with trip de-

tails:

* Meeting time, date, place duration

* Trip destination

* Trip grade and description

* Vehicle requirements

* Trip Leader contact name, phone number, email

* What to bring (eg overnight gear, recovery equipment etc)

Meeting Point and Departure

· Meeting times and location should be organised at a convenient location for people travelling from dif-

ferent locations and a time to suit the amount of travel/trip involved (usual locations include Reidy’s Lur-

es for east-bound (Arnhem Hwy) trips and McDonalds Coolalinga or Noonamah United for southbound

trips)

· Give briefing at start of trip as per the Trip Briefing (next page)

· Fill in the trip form including names and vehicle registrations of participants; you may elect to ask indi-

viduals on arrival at the meeting point to complete the form for you. A clipboard is useful for this.

· Ask for a nomination to write a trip report and ask them to submit their report to editor

([email protected]) by the following weekend.

· Remind and encourage people who are taking photos that the club has both Photobucket and

Facebook sites to upload photos for all to share.

· Arrange for someone to record GPS track of trip and send to the Information Manager

([email protected]) by the following weekend.

Completion and Return

· Contact the Tripping-up Coordinator to advise safe arrival home

· Complete the Post Trip form (http://www.tlccdarwin.com.au/post_trip_report.html) which will

then be emailed automatically to the Secretary ([email protected])

Page 25: Issue 7 — AUGUST 2019 Darwin Branch Established 1971 · Page 27 August GM Minutes Special Features Page 10 Club History by Derek McCarthy Page 15 Members Rig by Jason Colquhoun

Ready to Go?

Trip Grading

A grading system of Levels 1-5 is used to assist members in de-ciding which trips they would en-joy and which grade suits the drivers experience and ability. This system of grading is a guide only and may change due to weather conditions. The trip leader should be consulted in such circumstances.

Grade 1

Very easy with little if any 4X4 involvement. Will usually consist of a scenic tour or an easy trip to a camp and/or towing unlike-ly.

Grade 2

A relatively moderate 4X4 trip with winching and/or towing un-likely

Grade 3

A medium 4X4 trip which requires cautions whilst driving. Winching and/or towing should not be re-quired.

Grade 4

A moderately difficult 4X4 trip with some winching and/or towing al-most a certainty.

Grade 5

An extremely difficult 4X4 trip. Participants must be experi-enced at travelling over difficult terrain. Winching and/or towing will definitely be required and participants must have all their own recovery equipment.

Remember to lock and unlock your hubs!

Your vehicle should be fitted with towing points, painted yellow front and rear.

Before the trip

Obtain maps. If possible recce the trip and ask someone who has done it before.

On the day

Conduct a trip briefing, nominate scribe for the trip report., arrange convoy positions including Tail End Charlie.

Trip Briefing

Check all present, introduce your-self, new members, visitors, etc. Describe trip in general and de-scribe any difficult or specific points in detail and planned stops.

Important

If you have suggested trips or would like to lead a trip, please see the trip coordinator at the next general meeting. These are held on the first Wednesday of every month.

Convoy procedures

Trip leader to appoint “Tail End Charlie” and UHF Channel 10. Observe road rules at all times. Leave at least 4 vehicle lengths between you and the vehicle in front. All vehicles are responsible for the following vehicle at turn offs, road crossings, and negotiat-ing obstacles.

Always maintain convoy position, except in unavoidable circum-stances. No vehicle is to pass the Trip Leader unless in an emer-gency. Vehicles leaving a 4WD convoy for any reason must in-form the Trip Leader and “Tail End Charlie.”

When winches or snatch straps are being used, all per-sons are to stand well clear of cables and straps (at least 1.5 lengths, total cables and straps in use, in all directions is recom-mended), or remain in own ve-hicle. If you require the vehicle in front to stop, use radio, switch lights on and off or use horn.

All drivers are responsible for their passengers at all times. Visitors on club trips are the re-sponsibility of the people who invited them, but the Trip Leader should make sure that all visitors are conversant with these con-voy procedures.

All vehicles must carry their own recovery equipment, con-sistent with the grade of the trip, which should consist of towing rope, strap, winch or turfor etc., and shovel.

Trip Leader may make any other conditions for his particular trip at his own discretion. He must in-form all participants of his inten-tions before leaving.
