Issue of the Week – Climate Change
UK storms: 'There is worse to come‘. Feb 2014
Burning fossil fuels causes pollution which leads to
global warming.
Global warming is melting the ice caps. This leads to sea level
rise. Many scientists believe this could be responsible for the increase in coastal flooding
events.
Warmer air (due to global warming) can carry more moisture.
This could be why levels of rainfall have increased
and caused floods.

Is climate change to blame for the UK’s recent storms?
UK storms and floods5,800 homes flooded since December
Over 130,000 homes lost power112mph wind gusts recorded
319mm rain fallen in Thames Valley since mid-December Wettest January since 1776
Should we pay to protect homes in the UK, even though they will keep flooding because of
climate change?
Should we pay to protect the town or
countryside?
In the Commons, Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin said £61m would be spent to help repair the damage - but Labour said at least £118m was needed for rail repairs alone.
