1SRO, Indian Space Research Organization is the primary agency under the

department of space(established in 1972) for executing space programmes. This expo

included various missions of ISRO such as sounding rockets, remote sensing satellites,

INSAT, geostationary satellites and polar satellites. Starting from Aryabhatta to the

recent Chandrayaan 1 and RISAT1 satellites, ISRO had demonstrated its capability to

build and launch its own launch vehicles and satellites. After placing the Indian tricolor

onto the moon, ISRO is now looking towards probing the unexplored frontiers of MARS

and the SUN. ISRO has also set its size on the development of a heavy lift boost, GSLV

MK-111. A variety of Rohini sounding rockets that had been developed for conducting

scientific and technological experiments, were exhibited. In addition to this, models of

PSLV and GSLV were displayed. PSLV can launch 1700 kg class remote sensing

satellites into a 620 km polar Sun Synchronous Orbit. GSLV is capable of launching

2000kg class satellites into Geosynchronous Transfer Orbits (GTO).The models of

geostationary satellites of India such as INSAT series,2E,3B,3D etc which were very

innovative to our students. GSLV MARK-111, to place 4000kg class satellites in GTO,

is under development. INSAT, Indian National Satellite System is a multipurpose

satellite system for telecommunications, television broadcasting, meteorological,

disaster warning and search and rescue. Also the Indian Remote Sensing Satellite such

as IRS -1C, IRS- P3, IRS -1D etc offered space –based data in range of spectral bands,

spatial resolutions and swaths.

Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant is a nuclear power station in Koodankulam in

the Tirunelveli district of the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The plant's first reactor

is the first Pressurised Water Reactor (PWR) belonging to the Light Water

Reactor (LWR) category in India, and the 21st nuclear power reactor in the country.

Various charts and models depicting the reactors, safety measurements etc were on

Page 13: ISTE-GEC Chapter - ANNUAL REPORT · 2017. 2. 9. · Nithin P V, Nikhil Thomas and Praveen Pradeep of our college upheld the name of ... 10 Jomy Varghese . 8 11 Anju S. 12 Sarang P

display. The officials were always there to explain all about the functioning of the

reactors. The plant uses the advanced version of Russian-developed PWR nuclear

technology called VVER. VVER stands for Vodo-Vodyanoi Energetichesky Reactor,

which means Water-Water Power Reactor. The VVER technology has completed more

than 1,500 reactor-years of operating time. The KNPP is installed with AES-92 (or V-

466 model), the latest version of the third generation VVER-1000, that offers greater

safety and longer lifespan. The AES-92 design features a combination of active and

passive safety solutions. It retains the traditional active safety provisions, such as the

use of neutron absorbing control rods to control the reactivity. The passive safety

system incorporated in the design relies on natural factors, such as pressure

differentials, gravity or natural convection to ensure protection against malfunction of the

reactor during emergency situations.

5. BASIC C PROGRAMMING WORKSHOP

The ISTE students’ chapter of GEC, Thrissur has always presented something new

and helpful for the students. And this time, it was the first year students who benefitted

from the two day workshop on C PROGRAMMING held on 19th and 20th of October

2013. The intention was to make the students, especially those who hadn’t studied

computer science in the higher secondary level, familiar with the basics of C

Programming.

The first step was to collect the names of the interested students by making them

register their names online prior to the workshop. About 135 students registered and a

fee of Rs.50/- was collected. On the first day, the participants were addressed by Prof.

C P Sunilkumar, Chairman ISTE Chapter Thrissur, and student convener Sujith A K

(S7 CE) gave a small introduction about ISTE and its objectives to the participants.

A theory class was organized on the first day and we had some students of computer

science department willing to render their help. Sreelal, Vijeenrosh P W and Rajeev S of

S7 CSE, JitheshVijayakumar and Albince Paliakkara of S5 CSE, who are well

experienced in the field of coding websites and programming softwares, took classes

about the fundamentals of C PROGRAMMING which turned out to be a real help for

beginners. The classes began at 9.30 AM and came to an end by 4 PM. On the second

day of the workshop the participants had a practical session where they could test their

knowledge by trying out the programs given to them in the computer lab. Varun Mulloli

of S7 CSE and Abhay Krishnan of S3 CSE and many students from S5, S3 and also

S1S2 of various departments came forward to help the participants in the lab and to

clear their doubts. At the end of the practical session the participants gained a basic

idea about the fundamentals of C and programming logic which would be an asset to

them throughout their academic years and also when they pursue a profession.

6. DEBATE ON “INDIA’S MISSION TO MARS, MANGALYAN, A

BANE OR BOON”

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - India's first mission to Mars left Earth's orbit early on 5th

November 2013, clearing a critical hurdle in its journey to the red planet and overtaking

the efforts in space of rival Asian giant China. The mission is a "technology

demonstrator" project aiming to develop the technologies required for design, planning,

management and operations of an interplanetary mission. The success of the

spacecraft, scheduled to orbit Mars by next September, would carry India into a small

club, which includes the United States, Europe and Russia, whose probes have orbited

or landed on Mars.

A debate was conducted on November 5, whether India’s mission to Mars- the

“Mangalyan” would be a bane or a boon. Views were presented to support both sides. A

Page 18: ISTE-GEC Chapter - ANNUAL REPORT · 2017. 2. 9. · Nithin P V, Nikhil Thomas and Praveen Pradeep of our college upheld the name of ... 10 Jomy Varghese . 8 11 Anju S. 12 Sarang P

18

total of 58 students participated in the debate and Binoy B B, Assistant Professor,

Department of EEE was the moderator. On the beginning, the participants were

addressed by Dr. P R Shalij, Secretary, ISTE Kerala, gave a small introduction about

ISTE and its objectives to the participants

Students attending the debate

One of the students participating in the debate pointed out that the $72 million mission

has a trip of more than 400 million miles (643.7 million kilometers) ahead of it. The

probe will fly halfway around the sun while moving out toward the orbit of Mars,

intercepting the Red Planet Sept. 24 for another major rocket maneuver to place itself

into orbit. If the probe arrives successfully, India's space agency will become the fourth

entity to have a mission to reach Mars. The United States, Russia and the European

Space Agency have already done it. Though $72 million sounds stunningly a large

amount, it is just actually one tenth the amount that NASA has spent on its new mission.

Contradicting the above point said a student that if such a large had been made

Page 19: ISTE-GEC Chapter - ANNUAL REPORT · 2017. 2. 9. · Nithin P V, Nikhil Thomas and Praveen Pradeep of our college upheld the name of ... 10 Jomy Varghese . 8 11 Anju S. 12 Sarang P

19

available to enable such an unsure project, clearly it could have been made available to

meet the hundred other important needs of the country.

Another pointed out that the Mars probe will study the planet's surface and mineral

composition, besides sniffing the atmosphere for methane, a chemical strongly tied to

life on Earth. However, NASA mission Curiosity did not find significant amounts of the

gas in recent tests. Yet again, this is just a possibility.

The next point in support was said by a student as -It was decided to launch this Mars

probe on the PSLV (Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle), removing the risk of launching on

India's larger failure-prone Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle, which could have

put the mission immediately on the path to Mars. On the other hand we had another

student countering the above said that the probe repeatedly passed through Earth's Van

Allen radiation belts. Apparently, Indian officials mitigated the threat by beefing up the

craft's computers with radiation shielding. And it meant the probe had to carry more

propellant, leaving less room for scientific instruments and decreasing the fuel left over

to survey Mars once it arrives there. So the Indian mission carries about 33 pounds, or

15 kilograms, of scientific instrumentation which is actually not so safe.

It is India’s first interplanetary mission and, if successful, ISRO would become the fourth

in space agency to reach Mars, after the Soviet space program, NASA, and European

Space Agency !!!

7. WHETHER THE KOODAMKULAM NUCLEAR POWER PLANT

PROJECT SHOULD BE ENCOURAGED OR NOT? – A DEBATE

As a part of activities of Indian Society for Technical Education GEC Chapter, a debate

was conducted in Government Engineering College, Thrissur on 10th January 2014 .The

topic was “Whether the Koodamkulam Nuclear Power plant should be encouraged or

not?”. A total of 53 students participated in the debate and Binoy B B, Assistant

Professor, Department of EEE was the moderator. On the beginning, the participants

Page 20: ISTE-GEC Chapter - ANNUAL REPORT · 2017. 2. 9. · Nithin P V, Nikhil Thomas and Praveen Pradeep of our college upheld the name of ... 10 Jomy Varghese . 8 11 Anju S. 12 Sarang P

20

were addressed by Prof. C P Sunilkumar, Chairaman, ISTE Thrissur Chapter, gave a

small introduction about ISTE and its objectives to the participants

Students attending the debate

The main argument raised against the opening of Koodamkulam Nuclear Power plant

was about the nuclear hazards that are likely to happen. The power plant will turn out to

be another Fukushima if a natural calamity such as a Tsunami occurs. Other

environment problems are also expected if the project is on. The nuclear wastes

produced in the power plant are also another threat to human as well as environment.

The increase in energy demand stand as a strong reason which in turn supports the

Nuclear power plant. Nuclear power is a sustainable energy source which reduces

carbon emissions and can increase energy security if its use supplants a dependence

on fossil fuels. The cost of nuclear power is lower than that of either fossil fuels or

Page 21: ISTE-GEC Chapter - ANNUAL REPORT · 2017. 2. 9. · Nithin P V, Nikhil Thomas and Praveen Pradeep of our college upheld the name of ... 10 Jomy Varghese . 8 11 Anju S. 12 Sarang P

21

renewable. The proponents argue that the risk of storing nuclear wastes is small and

can be further reduced by using latest technology in newer reactors.

These were the main points raised in favour and against the Koodamkulam Nuclear

plant. The debate was a healthy one. Moderator concluded the debate by restating the

points raised in the debate.

8. KURUKSHETRA’14 – THE DEBATE COMPETITION

ISTE Students’ Chapter of GEC Thrissur, organized yet another interesting activity,

KURUKSHETRA ’14, a debate competition. The competition was carried out in two

levels. A preliminary round was conducted in which every student got a chance to

participate. Two questions, one technical level and another general level, were given in

each class and everyone was asked to write about it in ten minutes. Then the best of

the answers were selected and those students got a chance to participate in the final

round. About 40 students participated for the event.

Moderator of the debate addressing the participants

22

On January 16th 2014, the final round of debate was conducted in the auditorium from

2 to 5 pm. Prior to the competition a talk was also organized. A faculty from Kingfisher

Training Academy, Thrissur, Mr. Davis Padical, delivered an enlightening speech about

IELTS. After the talk, the final round began and the topic of debate was MANAGEMENT

STUDIES OR TECHNICAL COURSE, WHICH ONE OPENS UP A BETTER PATH TO

BOOST ONE’S CAREER? The participants were divided into two groups. While one

group pointed out the benefits of technical courses, the other group was equally

determined to prove the merits of management studies. Sanjay Gopal (S6 CSE)

moderated the debate.

Amit Upadhyay (S8 PE) and Mr. Davis Padical did a brilliant job as judges. After a

brilliant display of ideas and concepts by the participants, Govind Menon (S1S2 ME)

was selected as the best performer and Mrudul N (S8 ME) as second best. Prof. C. P.

Sunil Kumar, Chairman ISTE GEC Chapter distributed the cash prizes and felicitated

the occasion.

9. VISIT TO AKASHAVANI

Our Students Chapter organized yet another informational experience for the

final year electrical and electronics engineering students, a one-day visit to Akashavani,

Thrissur on 24th February 2014. The team of about 30 students, guided by ISTE

Students’ Chapter Faculty Advisor Binoy B B and Asst. Prof. Uma Shyamkumar of the

FM station

On reaching the studio, the team was first taken to the recording studio. A recording

studio is a facility for sound recording and mixing. Ideally both the recording and

monitoring spaces are specially designed by an acoustician to achieve optimum

acoustic properties (acoustic isolation or diffusion or absorption of reflected sound that

could otherwise interfere with the sound heard by the listener). Recording studios are

carefully designed around the principles of room acoustics to create a set of spaces with

Page 25: ISTE-GEC Chapter - ANNUAL REPORT · 2017. 2. 9. · Nithin P V, Nikhil Thomas and Praveen Pradeep of our college upheld the name of ... 10 Jomy Varghese . 8 11 Anju S. 12 Sarang P

25

the acoustical properties required for recording sound with precision and accuracy.

Equipments found in a recording studio are:

Mixing console

Multi-track recorder

Microphones

Reference monitors, which are loudspeakers with a flat frequency response

Keyboard

Acoustic drum kit

Then the team was informed about the networking topology used in the station.

Radio circuits inherently possess a broadcast network topology. After that they were

shown the fm transmitter which was confined to the size of a room. The transmitting

antenna is the crucial part of the system. Preferred type of antenna is affected by

several factors, but mostly by transmitting site. The middle of the area is covered. It is

an omni-directional antenna which transmits equally all ways, while outside the

coverage area the signal is beamed in with a directional antenna. There is also a GPS

based clock for synchronizing time at all stations throughout India.

11. SEMINAR ON “WHAT AFTER ENGINEERING?”

It has become a trend among Malayalees to follow the path travelled by everyone.

This is evident in the fields of engineering. Every engineer who passes out of a college

pursue the same career, a software engineer. ISTE Student’s Chapter hosted a seminar

for the final year students of GEC, Thrissur that opened diverse opportunities in various

fields on 4th March 2014.

The Chopras Career Academy, Ernakulam is a renowned institute and it was an

honour for us when Mr. Nishaf Hassan, SCM Hub Director agreed to host a seminar for

the final year students on the topic “What after Engineering?” .the seminar was very

informative a useful as it brought into discussion, the various career opportunities an

engineer can pursue apart from IT Job. About 75 students attended the programme.

There are hundreds of industries in both public and private sectors that recruit

engineers. It just takes a moment’s thought to make a huge difference in our lives. For

example a job in KSEB or BSNL wouldn’t make you experience the pressures and

tensions of an IT job. At the end of the one hour talk, the students walked out of the hall

with a new found freedom and determination that came from the knowledge that they

are not bound to follow the so called convention and join a software company.

13. CAREER GUIDANCE CLASS

Pre-final year engineering students have always been facing the dilemma, “what after

engineering?” And they are always presented with two answers, either get placed in a

good IT company or go for higher studies such as M.Tech/MS. But ISTE Chapter of

GECT, organized a two hour talk on 12th March 2014 which was helpful in diverting the

students’ direction of thought about their career.

A team from Petrocil Engineers and Consultants Pvt Ltd headed by Rashad, came to

our campus. They are a professionally managed multi-dimensional Engineering

consultancy with specialists in Process, Instrumentation, Mechanical, Pipeline, Civil and

Electrical disciplines. Asst. Prof. Jiji K S presided over the programme. The talk was

very informative as it enlightened our students about the wide range of opportunities for

Electrical engineers in the field of Refineries/Petrochemical and other chemical

industries. Electrical engineers always have an important place in all stages of an oil

refinery plant, both on shore and off shore. Also, this company offers crash courses for

students to bridge the gap between what they learn inside the campus and how they are

expected to apply that in a real time job. It can be assured that this two hour talk made

the students ponder about their careers and see the opportunities offered to them in a

different perspective.

14. LUMINO’14

The ISTE Students’ Chapter of GEC, Thrissur conducted another colourful event

LUMINO ’14- THREE HURDLES, ONE RIDE TO GLORY, on 25th March 2014.

Receiving about 40 registrations and total of 200 students, the event turned out to be a

huge success.

LUMINO ’14 consisted of three rounds in which students were to participate

in teams of 2 to 4. The first round was TREASURE HUNT and the attractive part about

it was the teams entered the hunt directly without any aptitude test. Ten teams qualified

the first round and reached the second. The second round, JUNK ART tested the

creative skills of the participants as they were asked to make up a useful household

item out of a number of junk materials. It did compel our participants to think in new and

different perspectives as they have never done before and the results were marvelous.

The final round was designed for four teams. And in the final round, AD-ZAP, the teams

had to prepare and present an advertisement for a given product. Thus the three rounds

tested the technical, innovative and managerial skills of the participants.

16. EARTH HOUR

A program was conducted in the Seminar Hall of Civil Department of our college

on 28th of March 2014 in order to highlight the consequences of excess use of electricity

Students attending the seminar

Mr Manoj highlighted the importance of saving electricity. He stressed that only

50% of the requirement is met by the electricity production in Kerala. The state has the

highest share of domestic consumption. Hence ‘Earth Hour’ would be an ideal solution

for the present scenario. ‘Earth Hour’ is observed every year on the last Saturday in the

month of March. He explained that ‘Earth Hour’ can be observed by turning off all

electrical appliances for one hour during peak hours (i.e. 6.00pm to 10.00pm).He said

that “Switch off your lights on Saturday 29th March from 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm to be part

of the world's largest voluntary action for the environment!”. Observing ‘Earth Hour’ not

only reduces power consumption but also helps to check global warming which is a

threat to the entire planet. In Kerala, hydel projects are mostly used instead of thermal

for generation of electricity, moreover hydel electricity generation is pollution free and

environment friendly. He insisted using 5-star power rated appliances as it reduces

energy consumption. He mentioned the necessity of using alternative sources of energy

like solar, wind etc instead of conventional sources. Around 70 students attended the

session.

Mr Manoj provided an eye-opening lecture on the necessity of control of power

consumption in the state and the crisis faced by KSEB. The students found it very

informative and thanked Mr Manoj for spending his valuable time.
