Programme Outline & AimsThe main aim of this programme is to prepare those whose �rstlanguage is not English, but who have a good generalknowledge of English, for examination leading to a HigherCerti�cate in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) which isrecognised internationally.

The programme aims to:• Review and consolidate basic grammar points and introduce

students to more advanced grammatical conceptsappropriate to their level

• Improve pro�ciency in written skills with special focus onwritten communication for business and academic purposes

• Further develop oral (speaking) competency by focusing onpronunciation, presentation skills, register (the use ofappropriate terminology), vocabulary expansion andgrammatical accuracy.

• Enhance listening skills using state-of-the-art technology and materials which focus on issues of national, international andcultural interest (news items, documentaries, �lms, etc.).

• Increase the students’ awareness of Irish culture, politics andhistory to give them a better understanding of Ireland & theIrish way of life

Career OpportunitiesSuccessful completion of this course at the highest level (UpperIntermediate/Advanced) meets the English competency entryrequirements for entry onto other programmes at ITT Dublin.

Entry RequirementsThis course is designed for those with a working knowledge ofwritten and spoken English who wish to improve their languageskills and gain a formal quali�cation. The classes are delivered at3 levels (Lower Intermediate, Intermediate and HigherIntermediate/Advanced). Before attending the �rst class, allapplicants will complete a placement assessment to identify theircurrent level of English. The test will enable the Institute to placestudents in the correct class for progression of their languageskills.

The course provides general preparation and guidance forstudents who wish to sit either the IELTS exam in AcademicEnglish or the IELTS exam in General Training. More informationon [email protected]

The placement test consists of two components. The �rstcomponent comprises a grammar test (multiple choicequestions/answers - one hour in duration) and the secondcomponent is a short listening test (multiple choicequestions/answers - 15 minutes duration). Students will be informed of their results/level within a few daysand assigned their class.

Course ContentAt each level, the course will focus on improving existing skills inall four areas of language learning (reading, writing, listeningand speaking). Students will further develop their knowledge ofgrammar and learn to put rules into practice when speaking andwriting. Work on grammar is supported by functional writtentasks such as letter/e-mail writing, report writing, etc. Studentswill also apply this grammatical knowledge when engaging inspeaking activities (role-plays, interviews, general conversation,presentations, etc.). Emphasis will be placed on identifying andusing appropriate vocabulary and making the necessarydistinction between professional and idiomatic language.

Key areas of pronunciation will be addressed at the start of eachcourse to ensure that students communicate �uently andcompetently in both a social and/or professional context.

Students will engage in expanding vocabulary through readingtexts from a variety of up-to-date sources such as newspapers,magazines, advertisements and letters. Emphasis will be placedon expanding the students’ existing vocabulary through the useof synonym/antonym exercises, word games and matchingexercises. Writing exercises will concentrate on �uency, theemployment of an e�ective range of vocabulary, correctpunctuation and spelling.

Listening exercises will include topical documentaries and newsitems which will focus on local and international issues, Irishculture and politics, thus increasing students’ awareness ofIreland & its people.

Programme Outline & AimsThe overall aim of the programme is to enable learners todevelop, produce and evaluate complex and artistic culinaryproducts of the highest quality, underpinned with the applicationof advanced (state of the art) technology, within a commercialcontext.

Entry RequirementsIt is a requirement that students on the programme haveachieved a National Certi�cate in Professional Cookery, FETACaward (Level 6) or equivalent. It is also recommended thatapplicants have at least one year’s post quali�cation experience.

Candidates are chosen on basis of interview, to be held in ITTDublin. All applicants must have competence in spoken andwritten English (please see page 126).
