14th International Youth Forum of IFBDO/FIODSBouznika, Morocco

28th – 31st of August 2014

DAY ONE: Thursday 28th August Market

The forum started with the traditional Market where each country had the opportunity to present their various promotional objects that included marketing campaigns and merchandise. Some countries also took the opportunity to bring their local foods. Its country was able also the next days to present itself with videos, speeches and also interactive activities such as songs and dances. Through these actions each participant had the opportunity to learn how the other organisations promote the idea of blood donation and everything it is concerned the young blood donors. Also through this procedure, the participants could achieve better level of communication during the workshops.

DAY TWO: Friday, 29th August Opening session

The Forum started with the opening ceremony and the welcome speeches from M.me Malika Mazzine (Head of the Organizing Committee), Mr. Lahcen Rezzak (President of the Moroccan Federation of Blood Donors Organizations), Mr. Saad Belouafi (President of the Moroccan Youth Committee), Mr. Gianfranco Massaro (President of IFBDO/FIODS), Mr. Mohammed Benajiba (Director of National Transfusion Service), who gave a presentation on the situation of blood donation in Morocco, and Ms. Alice Simonetti (President of the IYC).

Workshop n.1: ”WHAT” - Denmark

It was introduced from three Danish volunteers, Anna, Julie and Malene, who made a presentation about how the following things works in Denmark. Different types of blood donations and what the blood is used forThe blood from a full blood donation, is centrifuged and then split in to three components, red blood cells (Erythrocytes), plasma and a buffycoat, witch is later used for making blood platelets (Thrombocytes). These components are all used to treat patients in different ways, ex. cancer patients, operations and

traumas. In some of the big hospitals, it is possible to make a special donation called Apheresis. You can do Apheresis if only one of the components are needed. Four types of Apheresis exist: Plasmapheresis (The donor is only giving plasma), Thrombopheresis (the donor is only giving blood platelets), Erythrocytapheresis (the donor is only giving red blood cells) and Leukapheresis (the donor is only giving white blood cells – not used very often). Donation of bone marrowo Some patients have a disease, where the bone marrow is very sick, ex. Blood cancer (Leukemia) and they need a completely new bone marrow to get better. If you are a blood donor, it is possible to take an extra blood test (while donating blood) and then register your tissue type in the bone marrow records. There are several thousand different tissue types, so sometimes it is difficult to match donor and patient. However, if this is successful, you can collect the bone marrow from the hipbone or collect it through the blood and then donate it to the patient. Organ donationEverybody in Denmark can donate an organ – you just have to sign up... it is possible to donate almost everything in your body (Heart, Lung, Kidney, Liver, Pancreas, Cornea, Skin, Bone Marrow, Blood, Hands, Leg, Bone, Small intestine etc.), but you can decide witch organs you will donate. A lot of people die waiting for an organ, and it is believed that the needs for organs will increase in the future. At the end of the workshop we teamed up in four work groups and discussed the following issues – the summary of the discussions are below each of the questions:1) What different types of blood donation do you have in your country?• The donation systems is very much like Denmark, ex.• Italy and Portugal = Full blood and all 4 types of Apheresis • Lebanon and Greece = Full blood, Thrombopheresis and very rare Plasmapheresis • Morocco = Full blood and Thrombopheresis 2) What organ donation system do you have?• Portugal = The same as in Denmark • Italy and Lebanon = You have to fill a schedule, but you cannot decide which organ you will

donate. In Lebanon the religion have a lot to say • Morocco = You can donate your kidney to some in your family and they have also liver

donations, but there religion and culture have a lot to say • Greece = Automatic organ donor when you turn 18 years old, but family decide when you are

dead. You can always say no to be an organ donor. 3) What are the pros/cons on the opt-in/opt-out systems? . 4) Suggestion on how to increase numbers of organ donors • There is a very big difference between the countries because of culture (religion) and family relations. Some have a fear that the organs will end up “at the black market”. We are almost agree at opt-out option will provide more donors. With the opt-in option, you are sure, that the donors are willing to give their organs. We do not think it is a good idea that the donors should have benefits (as medical benefits in Israel). You have to be a donor for other people NOT for yourself. They do not have enough information about organ donation in Greece – maybe it can be improved by awareness in schools or when you turn 18... We have many different opinions between countries and even in the same culture...

Workshop n. 2: WHEN & WHERE – LebanonThe next Working Session was presented from the Lebanese Delegation: When and Where to recruit Donors. It was presented by Donner Sang Compter's President (Yorgui Teyrouz) and Operations Manager (Abdo Saad). They explain the role of Social Media in raising awareness and promoting blood

donations.Social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram...) helped the NGO in creating its solid "Image and Identity" to its audience, through really cheap online marketing and promotion. Through them, DSC promoted the blood donation cause by creating some competition and interaction on the pages.Once this image was created, and the reach went to a higher number of followers, DSC benefited from this identity to fund its activities through the fundraisers that were well supported by big companies trying to enhance their "corporate social responsibilities" (CSR). To sum up we can conclude that: Having a "cooler" approach to young potential donors using the platforms of social media, and taking the donor experience to a much entertaining level, has helped DSC in not only recruiting first time donors, but in retaining them as regular ones.

DAY THREE: Saturday, 30th August

Workshop n. 3: “WHO” – Morocco

The hosting delegation from Morocco conducted a working session on “The role of volunteers as citizens and promoters”. First of all the presentation focused on the complex reality of blood donation in Morocco, and on its different donors’ associations, including some specific promotional initiatives and videos. After the presentation participants were given some food for thought with regard of the role of youth in the promotion of the gift of blood, especially by posing some related question to which the volunteers, divided into smaller groups, had to respond.

Workshop n. 4: “WHY” – ItalyThe Italian delegation prepared a seminar on motivation, explaining some general principles about this topic and then dealing with different levels of involvement of volunteers in a blood donors association. The first step was indeed the one of citizens becoming blood donors, then retained, periodic and associated donors; after this, the passage from being not only a blood donor but also an active volunteer within the association was analyzed, to conclude with volunteers who decide to become managers and member of the executive board of their organization.

Afterwards ach one of this step was further discussed in a different smaller group of participants, with the aim to suggest pros and cons of a particular level of commitment in a blood donors association, in addition to practical and useful guidelines on how to keep volunteers motivated.
