The Daniel Boone Hays House is located in the valley of the Femme Osage Creek about 4 1/2 miles west of Defiance, Missouri.
The "L"-plan, two-story, native stone house is approximately 42 x 52 feet in over-all dimensions. It faces east on a hillside site sloping downward from east to west, exposing the basement at the rear of the house.
The foundations are constructed of the same buff-colored stone found in the walls. The stones are largest and most regular on the primary (east) wall and at each corner. They are almost random ashlar on the north wall. The south and west walls are of intermediate quality stonework.
The southwest corner formed by the juncture of the front main block and the rear ell shelters a two-story screened-in porch, accessible from the yard by means of a six-foot high double-ramp (east and west) stone stairway. This porch has a built-in wooden stairway at its southwest corner for access to the second floor. A unique feature of this porch area is a stone basin built into the exterior southwest corner of the main block.
Under the screened porch one can enter the basement, which is only slightly lower than the grade of the surrounding yard on the downhill side of the site.
A side entranceway on the north wall opens just west of the junction of the ell. It is sheltered by a non-original, one-story, screened porch.
There are three chimneys—one centered on both north and south gable ends and a third on the north wall of the ell.
The primary, front, east entrance has a notable round-arch, monolithic lin tel. Other openings have flat, monolithic lintels.
Basement (at rear), first and second story windows have six-over-six light, double-hung sash. The attic has small casement windows. A dormer added to the rear ell's west roof slope has three double-hung sash windows—two with four-over-four lights flanking one with six-over-six light sash. Shutters are hung at several windows. Several elements of early shutter hardware are still in place on windows without shutters.
The present roof is corrugated sheet metal painted red.
The interior space is divided similarly into three rooms in the basement and first and second stories, except that a partition wall dividing the front block, first story into two rooms has been removed.
The attic area over the main block only was not examined.
Interior wood finish of dark, natural walnut woodwork occurs in the doors,
door and window frames, chair rails, baseboards and raised center paneling

has national significance as a well-preserved, early Missouri example of the eighteenth-century English "I" type housel adapted to its selected hillside site in a manner more common in Pennsylvania than to eastern Mis souri. 2
Superficially, the Hays House appears to be a fairly typical, two-story, pioneer farm dwelling, one room deep, with gable-end chimneys and a lean-to kitchen wing enclosing a two-story southwest porch. However, several features give it architectural distinction: buff-colored, irregular-coursed ashlar stonework; the (original) asymmetrical plan of the main rectangular block with off-center, arched-entrance doorway; the functional ad justment of the kitchen wing to the hillside. All these sug gest a continuity in Missouri of a medieval English folk tra dition rather than simply naive "Georgian" or "Federal."3
The house is significant historically as the residence of Daniel Boone Hays, son of the early settlers, William and Suzannah (Boone) Hays, and grandson of the famous pioneer Daniel Boone. By 1818 Daniel Boone Hays was paying taxes on the tract of land in the west half of the southeast quarter, Section 29, Range 2 E, Township 45 N, in the Femme Osage Valley, which he received from his father's estate.4 The house apparently dates from the late 1820's or early 1830's. County tax records reflect an in crease in value of the property between 1826 and 1836, from $200.00 to $800.00 valuation.5 During 1819-1859 Daniel Boone Hays operated a grist mill, saw mill and water mill on Femme Osage Creek near the house. 6
Daniel Boone Hays (1789-1866), born in Kentucky, immigrated with his pa rents, brothers and sisters to Upper Louisiana in 1799. A fearless Indian fighter, he was wounded twice as a volunteer in the War of 1812. The se cond wound from a rifle ball lodging in his knee caused him to limp perma nently. He accompanied General William Clark up the Missouri River to Fort Osage. In 1821 he was appointed constable of the Femme Osage Dis trict. 7
The Hays and Boone families were bound together by ties of friendship and marriage. Daniel Boone Hays' father, William Hays, was a friend and hunt-

of several window and doorway jambs. The window jambs are splayed open 10° toward the inner wall surface. The 26-inch-deep jambs of exterior doorways have vertical reed paneling. The doors are paneled in the "Cross and Bible" design.
The stairway from basement to second floor is enclosed in the rear ell be hind the north half of the front block's west wall.
The floors are covered with wide floor boarding held in place with square nails. Walls and ceilings are painted plaster.
The stone fireplaces have simple wood plank shelves. The monolithic stone lintels have arched soffits. The hearths are flagstone. Fireplaces occur in the basement kitchen and dining room, the first story rooms, and the second story front block rooms.
ALTERATIONS
Alterations, under the supervision of Beverly Nelson, a St. Louis architect,! were made in 1936-1940: 2
1. Insertion of a central, second story window in the east wall.
2. Removal of a first story, frame partition wall which divided the main block into two rooms.
3. Removal of a quarter-turn, boxed stairway in the southwest corner of the former north room of the main block. This stairway provided access to the second floor.
4. Removal of a basement-to-second floor stair located on the south wall of the ell.
5. Construction of the present stairway connecting basement, first and second floors.
6. Installation of the kitchen in the ell basement.
7. Conversion of two basement storage rooms to a utility room (north) and dining room (south).
8. Addition of closets and bathrooms.
9. Several changes in interior doorways.
10. Addition of the dormer window to enlarge the ell's second story room.

Reconstruction of the north screened porch.
Alteration of the southwest porch from a board-sheathed to a screened porch.
13. Installation of a heating system, electricity, and plumbing.
OTHER SITE FEATURES
The site includes a non-original caretaker's house approximately 600 feet southwest of the main house, a non-original (late 1930's) deep well house and pump 70 feet northwest of the main house, a barn 300 feet southeast of the main house, a family cemetery approximately 200 yards northwest of the house, and foundations of a former outbuilding (possibly a barn) approx imately 600 feet northeast of the house. Two millstones are presently loca ted in the yard just southwest of the house. A log cabin, formerly located near the gate north of the house, deteriorated completely. 3
PRESENT USE AND CONDITION
The Daniel Boone Hays House, originally a substantial country residence, is presently used as a week-end and vacation retreat. The property is a farm.
The level of maintenance is generally good. Several fireplace lintels are cracked. Some wall surfaces have peeling paint and crazed plaster.

HAYS, DANIEL BOONE, HOUSE (HAYS FARM)
ing companion of Daniel Boone. He married Boone's eldest daughter. William Hays traveled with Boone over the Wilderness Road into Kentucky. When Boone lost his Kentucky lands, William Hays and his family followed him to Upper Louisiana in 1799. Daniel Boone Hays continued these close ties and built his house about halfway between the houses of his uncles, Daniel Morgan Boone and Nathan Boone.8 His son, John Boone Hays, heir to the house and farm, lived there until his death in 1913. 9
This site is being nominated to the National Register of Historic Places because of 1) its importance as a well-preserved example of residential ar chitecture dating from the early development of St. Charles County, 2) its design relationship to the medieval English folk tradition, and 3} the local importance of the original owner-builder, Daniel Boone Hays.
