With the emerging labour shortage and talent gap affecting British Columbia, the role of Junior achievement (Ja) has never been more critical. our hands-on business education programs and open dialogue with students are creating the experienced workforce required by today’s employers.
In response to these labour issues, Junior achievement of British Columbia (JaBC) embarked on tremendous strategic growth this past year. We have expanded our reach into eight new school districts and developed a number of new delivery partnerships throughout BC. The hiring of new staff in the fraser Valley and nanaimo increased our visibility in those regions and helped develop new volunteer and funding resources.
JaBC has continued to build upon and forge strong relationships with the business community. earlier this year the Board of Directors formed a fundraising committee to develop a major gift campaign – an initiative vital to our long term success and sustainability. We introduced our new screening protocol for volunteers and invested more time in recruitment and recognition. In May 2008 we celebrated the third annual Business laureates of British Columbia Hall of fame. Thanks to the commitment of the Hall of fame Cabinet we have created a stronger link between the laureates and the Ja students, who aspire to follow in their footsteps.
Year after year, many of the young people who participate in our programs go on to win awards, to pursue post-secondary education, and to become successful entrepreneurs or small business owners. JaBC has an important responsibility to engage more young people and prepare them for the future. Together we can provide youth with the passion to be innovative members of our communities and the next generation of leaders in British Columbia.
Brian Phillips Jan Bell-IrvingChair, Board of Directors President & Ceo
The most important corporate resource over the next 20 years will be talent: smart, sophisticated business people who are technologically literate, globally astute, and operationally agile.
A Prosperous Community Starts with Today’s Youth
British Columbia is experiencing a labour shortage, but more critical is the talent gap among most students leaving high school. More and more young people are entering the workforce and expected to fulfill roles without the skills or knowledge of basic business.
For over fifty years, Junior Achievement of British Columbia (JABC) has been fulfilling a vital role in the education of BC’s youth and in the development and prosperity of our economy. There are few objectives more critical and practical in the school curriculum than teaching young people about how business operates and the necessary role it plays in the global economy, inspiring young minds to seek out more information and consider a career in business. JaBC provides this opportunity.

Mentoring the next Generation
“If we want to compete in the global marketplace we need to prepare our young people for the future. It is more important than ever that we, as business leaders, act as role models for the next generation and provide them with the knowledge and experience to succeed.”
-Business Laureate Jim Pattison, O.C., O.B.C., President, Managing Director, CEO & Chairman, The Jim Pattison Group
“The talent shortage is not only affecting BC, but the entire country. It is a natural process to steward young people so they can move up the corporate ladder, but the process is much more complicated than it was many years ago. We are a technology based society and business is moving very quickly. We need young people entering the workforce to be prepared before they walk though those doors.
We can all do our part to ensure the students have the skills to take over as our business leaders. every young person should have the opportunity to pursue a career in business and be encouraged to explore the benefits that it provides.” -Business Laureate Joseph Segal, C.M., O.B.C., C.B.H.F., O.ST.J., LL.D. (HON), President, Kingswood Capital Corporation

Powerful Partnerships
In 2006, JaBC received a two million dollar grant from the Ministry of small Business and Revenue and the Ministry of education. Their investment has enabled us to address the current talent and skills gap and expand our student reach throughout the province. The Provincial Government is a strong advocate of Junior Achievement and recognizes the benefits our business education programs provide to aspiring youth. Western economic Diversification Canada also sees Junior achievement as part of the solution to the skills gap and is currently supporting our efforts to better market our programs and increase alumni involvement. Through their investment, the federal Government is nurturing and inspiring the next generation of business leaders. We are very grateful for these partnerships and the powerful contribution they are making to ensure sustainability for future business in British Columbia.
“We want more students to have basic business and financial skills, and these school programs will give young people the knowledge and confidence they need to thrive in our fast paced world. Junior achievement’s programs will help train and inspire new generations of entrepreneurs, innovators and business leaders.”
-The Honourable Gordon Campbell,
Premier, British Columbia

educators are important partners in bringing Ja’s business education programs to students across BC. It is individual teachers who invite Ja programs and volunteers into their classrooms and provide the foundation for every successful Ja experience.
In early 2008, JABC asked a group of teachers experienced in hosting Ja programs to help us identify the matches between our programs and Ministry of education Curriculum. We will use this work to promote our programs to educators at all levels, by demonstrating the learning outcomes that Ja programs can help teachers achieve.
“The children have really enjoyed everything that they have done so far. The presenters have been fabulous and they really understood our kids and their limitations.
-Cheryl Evans, Business Basics Grade five host teacher, Discover School, Victoria BC
“I am so impressed with Junior achievement and what it offers to interested students. several of my students have continued to work with JA after graduation and I have witnessed the confidence, growth, and wonderful employment opportunities that have resulted.”

This year 950 volunteers brought the Ja experience to life in classrooms across BC. Thanks to their passion for business and contribution of time, we can ensure BC builds a solid foundation for its future economic prosperity.
our volunteers come from a variety of sources. Many companies that financially support JA also encourage their employees to volunteer. service clubs and associations rally to volunteer at schools in their communities, and corporations encourage their employees to volunteer during business hours.

above and Beyond
These days santhy Yeager usually refers to herself as a volunteer, and rightfully so. over the past year this retired banker has volunteered with Junior achievement in 15 classes within the okanagan region. santhy’s in-class programs included Business Basics, economics of staying in school, and Dollars with sense.
Her involvement didn’t end there. santhy also took the time to create a DVD of her students in action and presented it at a Rotary Club meeting last spring. Her enthusiasm and passion for Junior achievement resulted in at $1000 donation from the Kelowna sunrise Rotary Club.
If our sense of connection to each other is reflected through volunteerism, then RBC financial Group is truly connected to JaBC.
on november 14, 2007, 24 senior staff from RBC financial Group came together to share their knowledge and skills with nearly two hundred Grade ten students from around Greater Victoria. students gathered at the University of Victoria to take part in Ja’s economics of staying in school program, presented as a one day special event.
The team of RBC volunteers spent the full day working with students to help them better understand personal finances, budgeting, employment opportunities, and matching lifestyle choices to earning ability.

Partners Help Ja succeed
Kamloops in the spotlight
In 2007-08, JABC made special connections with a number of community organizations whose own missions aligned closely with ours. Some of these mutually beneficial relationships have developed into delivery partnerships, whereby the community organization helps us coordinate programs in locations that are geographically distant – places our staff can’t otherwise reach. our current delivery partnerships with Community futures in the sunshine Coast, Community futures in Prince Rupert , and Kiwanis enterprise Centre in Dawson Creek have enabled us to bring the Ja experience to many new groups of students in schools that have never had access to Ja programs before.
early in 2008, Junior Achievement was given the opportunity to participate in a public service announcement featuring grade five students from Kamloops Christian School. thanks to a partnership with Community Futures thompson Country, the pSA was aired on CFJC-tV Channel 10 the first weekend in March. the students, who participated in JA’s Business Basics: our Business World program were very candid in front of the camera when asked about their experiences. “I loved learning about how business works because it is so much fun.” said Ben. stacy overby, a volunteer from Community futures, who taught the program said, “The students were absolutely inspiring. It was entrepreneurialism at its best and it was very rewarding to see.”

Ja alumni association
Reaching More Diverse student audiences
JABC’s mandate is to serve a diverse range of students, reflecting the diversity of British Columbia itself. JA delivers programs in urban and rural locations, corporate and small business- based communities, to a wide range of student audiences from first nations to new immigrants and Youth-at-Risk. our Prince George region has made particular progress in reaching Youth-at-Risk, by partnering with like-minded community organizations. our partners in the north include Intersect Youth and Family Services, an accredited non-profit society providing voluntary counselling for youth under 18, and Future Cents, a program designed to help young people overcome multiple barriers. Both of these organizations offer full-time classes with teachers who rely heavily on their communities to contribute to the welfare of their youth, and both have welcomed Ja programs in the last year. With the assistance of local role models, Ja is helping more vulnerable students imagine themselves as successful adults, and smoothing their transition to the world of work.
since 1955 over a quarter of a million students have participated in Junior achievement of British Columbia. Today we hear from our alumni on a regular basis, from all over the world. The memories and experiences they share capture the very best of Junior Achievement’s exciting record of success. In 2007-2008 we launched the Ja alumni association and developed new strategies to engage our past achievers.
