Page 4: JA British Columbia 2010-11 Annual Report

This past year has been one of investment. We focused on our program plan articulated in 2010 and made progress on the three key issues which emerged from our possibility statements: sustainability, innovation and impact.

We have worked with partners, community experts and other JA Charters across the country to move forward on our agenda related to integrating technology into programs. We are exploring models and opportunities to enhance our programs and anticipate technology will be a viable enabler for us to reach out to more diverse student populations throughout the province. It will also provide new roles and opportunities for our volunteer mentors who are the very core of our programs.

Building a stronger volunteer program and providing tools and resources has been a priority. We have improved our training program and will establish a platform to offer online registration in the coming year. Not only will this offer better service for our volunteers, teachers, students and alumni but it will provide efficiencies that will allow us to direct our resources toward all our stakeholder groups.

For those of us involved with JA the staggering positive results from the recent Boston Consulting Group (BCG) Report come as no surprise (see more on the next page). We are grateful for the extraordinary gift of time members of BCG donated to Junior Achievement to work on this project. If verifies that our efforts and investments are truly yielding outstanding results.

We are at an exciting period in our 55 year history. We know the impact of JA programs is remarkable. The investments of the past year and our commitment to sustainability and innovation

will position us to meet the future.

We close, as we do every year, with pride in our accomplishments. Thank you to our teachers, volunteers, donors, alumni, staff and board for making this past year a stellar success. Together we are creating a positive difference in the lives of the students we reach and ultimately in the economic health of our province.

JA’s Impact

4

JLooking to understand the impact of Junior Achievement (JA)? Just ask any of the Canadian students who experience a JA program every year. With Junior Achievement’s education experiences offered to over 230,000 youth a year, the impact is undeniable. Yet for all of these stories of this extraordinary impact JA has had, it has been difficult to quantify until now. In January 2011, the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) released a landmark pro bono study that measured what Junior Achievement programs bring to participants, employers and society as a whole.

Junior Achievement makes a positive annual impact on Canada’s economy.

• By helping youth stay in school, encouraging entrepreneurship, and teaching financial literacy skills, JA Canada creates an annual return to society of $45 for every $1 spent

• Each year, $425 million can be attributed directly to the entrepreneurial activity of Achievers

Junior Achievement fills a gap in Canada’s education system.

• Over 75% of Achievers cite Junior Achievement as having a significant impact in developing their financial literacy and decision making skills

• JA Canada programs reach nearly a quarter-million Canadian students in more than 400 communities each year, and are delivered free-of-charge

Junior Achievement is a life changing event.

• Over 65% of Achievers indicate that participation in JA Canada programs had a significant impact on staying in school and enrolling in post-secondary education

• 70% of Achievers indicate that participation in a JA Canada program had a significant impact on their desire to be an entrepreneur

Junior Achievement graduates achieve higher levels of success.

• Achievers are 50% more likely to open their own business which leads to innovation, new jobs, and wealth creation

• Over 75% of Achievers say Junior Achievement was a critical driver of their work success

“Thank you to the Rix Family Foundation for helping to support my post-secondary education. This scholarship will substantially lessen the financial burden of my family and will also allow me to devote a greater amount of time to my studies and extracurricular activities. I will be attending Simon Fraser University this fall to pursue one of my greatest passions… business.”

ABC Business Challenge

January, 2011

Team “Panthers” from Vernon Secondary School strategize during the intense day of competition.

Team “Entre Tek” from Rockridge Secondary in West Vancouver, celebrate their first place win in the

Entrepreneurs Marketplace.

J8

The BC Business Challenge is a fast-paced competition where grade 11 and 12 students take on the role of high-tech executives in a global business simulation. Teams work against the clock to develop management strategies for their imaginary companies, analyzing financial reports and scrutinizing the actions of other companies in a futuristic marketplace.

Team “Lambrick” from Lambrick Park Secondary in Victoria accept their first place

award in the Executive Marketplace.

Page 10: JA British Columbia 2010-11 Annual Report

On November 23, 2010, Junior Achievement partnered with the Surrey School District’s Aboriginal Education Department to present an Aboriginal Conference for some 100 students from five Learning Centres. This one-day event featured JA’s “Economics for Success” program, and included a welcome from Chief Willard Cook of Semiahmoo First Nation and a keynote speech by Joe Kambeitz, Katzie First Nation.

J2010-2011 Program Highlights

In response to increasing demand for financial literacy education, JABC piloted a new and improved version of the “Dollars with Sense” program for grade eight students with great success in 2010-11. What started out as a small pilot of a handful of programs turned into 47 deliveries across the province, thanks to strong word of mouth from host teachers.

In January, JABC welcomed The Year of Science as a sponsor of our annual BC Business Challenge. As a representative of the Ministry, the Hon. Ida Chong spoke to the students about innovation, science and technology and how it plays an important role in career development.

AJ2010-2011 Program Highlights

In Kamloops, “Company Program” students at Sahali Secondary designed and sold reusable water bottles. Not only did they donate $2,300 of their profits to

the Royal Inland Hospital, but their proposal to create a school water filling station was forwarded to

the School Board. Their slogan “Rethink Your Drink” was so impressive, they were hired to create a slogan

for an Alberta auto body and collision company.

A major highlight for our programing in Northern BC was certainly the contribution of Community Futures delivery

partners in Vanderhoof, Smithers, Terrace and Prince Rupert, and the Kiwanis Enterprise Centre in Dawson Creek.

Together these five partners delivered 27 JA programs in their respective communities.

Victoria student Nazif Khedri, from Mount Douglas Secondary, participated in several JA programs in high

school, notably “Company Program” where he was recognized as one of the driving forces behind the

“Mount Doug Wear” student business that sold over 1,000 garments and grossed $26,000. Naz attended JA’s

Next Generation Leaders Forum in Ontario—which he described as a “life changing experience”.
