SUMMARY OF PROFESSIONAL SERVICE ACTIVITIES
Highlights of Dr. Weintraub’s national service leadership activities include serving as President of the American
Association of Public Health Dentistry, a two-year term as Board Member at Large for the American Association
for Dental Research and President of the Behavioral Sciences and Health Services Research Group of the
International Association for Dental Research, and President, Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine’s Alumni
Association. She served as an elected member of the American Public Health Association Oral Health Section’s,
Section Council and has chaired the Section’s nominations and Knutson award committees . She was appointed
and currently serves on the NIH National Advisory Dental and Craniofacial Research Council. She has served on
research training-related External Advisory Committees for the University of Michigan, the University of North
Carolina, and the Oregon Health Sciences University and expert work panels for the Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention and the American Dental Association. She was a member of the Data and Safety Monitoring
Board (DSMB) for a multi-center NIH-funded randomized clinical trial. (PI: Dr. Papas, Tufts School of Dental
Medicine.) She served as the Co-Chair representing dentistry (with Co-Chair Dr. Stein representing medicine) to
develop evidenced-based guidelines for health professionals, titled “Oral health during pregnancy and early
childhood” under the auspices of the California Dental Association Foundation in collaboration with the
American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, District IX. She is now on a similar task force for the
North Carolina Division of Public Health.
At UCSF, she served as the first Chair of the School of Dentistry’s Task Force on Women and Underrepresented
Minorities. The Task Force developed and prioritized an extensive list of recommendations to enhance the
School’s diversity and make it more welcoming. She was Chair of the Chancellor’s Advisory Committee on
Disability Issues, and Chair of the UCSF campus-wide Graduate Council that provides oversight and review for
all UCSF graduate programs. She was a member of the School of Dentistry’s Academic Planning and Budget
Committee and represent the dental school on the University Community Partnerships Council.
Some highlights of past activities include serving on the national committees to develop the national Healthy
People 2000 and 2010 oral health objectives. Dr. Weintraub was one of the scientific editors and contributing
authors for the first Surgeon General’s Report on Oral Health. She has been a frequent reviewer for NIDCR grant
proposals, currently serves on the NIDCR Council. She is currently serving on a national committee developing a
report on the future of dental education being funded by multiple organizations.
RESEARCH STATEMENT
Prior to her appointment as Dean at the UNC School of Dentistry, Dr. Weintraub was the recipient of the Lee
Hysan Chair in Oral Epidemiology and Dental Public Health, the UCSF School of Dentistry’s first endowed
chair. Her research has focused on the epidemiology and prevention of oral conditions and oral health disparities,
with an emphasis on conducting prevention-oriented clinical trials. Her patient and population-based research,
with applications to dental patients or the larger community, spans the continuum of epidemiology, clinical
research, and health policy.
She was the PI and Director of the NIH-funded Center to Address Disparities in Children’s Oral Health,
nicknamed CAN DO. The aims of this multidisciplinary Center are to understand, prevent and reduce oral health
disparities, with a special focus on preventing early childhood caries (ECC), a condition prevalent among young
49
children in many low-income racial/ethnic groups. The Center, initiated in 2001, initially included eight main
RO1 type projects, administrative, measurement and evaluation cores, an educational and training unit, and 11
pilot projects. “CAN DO 2” was funded in 2008 for another seven years for a total of $24.4 million, the largest
research grant in the history of UCSF School of Dentistry. This cycle includes a large randomized clinical trial
(RCT), administrative core, and a data coordinating center. The Center has community-based partnerships
including the San Francisco Department of Public Health, the San Ysidro Health Center, and Head Start Centers
in San Francisco, Berkeley, Albany, and Oakland, CA. Studies are also taking place in San Jose and rural
Mendota. (Please see the Center’s website for updated details: http://www.cando.ucsf.edu)
At UCSF, Dr. Weintraub directed and participated in several RCTs for caries prevention. One NIH-funded RCT
was conducted in conjunction with Planet Biotechnology, a company that developed monoclonal antibodies to the
bacteria primarily responsible for dental caries (anti-S. mutans) in plants (plantibodies). The trial’s purpose was to
determine the safety and efficacy of a plantibody applied topically to teeth in preventing S. mutans recolonization
on the tooth surfaces of adults. Another NIH-funded RCT tested the efficacy of parental oral health counseling
and fluoride varnish to prevent ECC. The favorable results provide the evidence-base for the use of fluoride
varnish for this purpose. Results also provide a rationale for preventive dental visits for very young children and
demonstrate the ability to successfully conduct research in community settings. She served as PI for both these
studies. Dr. Weintraub has also collaborated on three other caries prevention oriented studies; one RCT with Dr.
Ramos-Gomez tested interventions for both the mother and child to prevent early childhood caries; one RCT with
Dr. Featherstone, tested a new method of caries management and prevention using information obtained from
salivary biomarkers, and a third, with Dr. Eakle, examined salivary fluoride levels following use of fluoride
varnish and fluoride mouthrinse. She conducted a population-based epidemiologic study to assess the oral health
of Hispanic agricultural worker families in Mendota, a rural community in California’s Central Valley. In addition
to documenting their poor oral health, a key finding was the strong relationship between untreated caries in
mothers and their children, even after controlling for many other factors. Finally, Dr. Weintraub has been
responsible for engaging many UCSF investigators from outside the dental school with a wide range of expertise
(i.e., anthropology, health psychology, pediatrics, family and community medicine, and genomics) in clinical
research to improve oral health and reduce oral health disparities.
At UNC, Dr. Weintraub has been mentoring and providing consultation to faculty in the development of their
research grant proposals. She has initiated a process to bring together faculty interested in the relationship
between oral health and obstructive sleep apnea and other sleep disorders. She was the keynote speaker at the
school’s 2012 Dental Research and Review Day and has been a keynote speaker for similar events at other dental
schools. She is currently a co-investigator on an AHEC project with Dr. Lampiris to determine factors leading to
career choices of dentists practicing in safety net clinics in underserved areas.
