Education is the power to think clearly, the power to act well in the world’s workand the power to appreciate life. (Joseph Addison)

From The Principal :

Wow, 2014 has started off very fast.....and very cold! This month is busy for teachers as they finish up final assignments for the learning during Term 1 and write report cards of achievement. In addition, our first reports go home for the Kindergarten children and are followed by interviews throughout next week.

There is not a formal interview night for students in grades 1 to 5 however, if you have questions or concerns please do contact your child’s teacher. You may have a conversation about next steps either in person or over the phone. Your children are learning to become independent, critical thinkers; ready for the 21st century. We encourage you to talk with your child about their progress and to set goals for improvement.

Our Primary choir has begun practicing and we are looking forward to singing to an audience on February 13th. The theme of Fun and Friendship is curriculum related for our younger children and also encourages our Character education word for January: Empathy.Mrs. Graham and I are looking forward to seeing everyone February 13th in the Gym at 6:30!

Lastly, we are beginning to plan for next year and our Kindergarten registration is just a little over a week away. If you have neighbours who have children ready for Full Day Kindergarten please encourage them to call or drop into the school to make an appointment for registration. We are excited to be able

to offer a Welcome to Kindergarten event as well as some ‘Coffee with the Principal’ sessions combined with Timbertots to prepare families

for the upcoming change to Full Day Kindergarten. New families are always welcome at Trelawny!

WALK LIKE A PENGUIN

With the winter weather upon us, icy conditions can lead to slip and

falls that range from a simple bruised shin to an extremely serious injury. Traction on outdoor surfaces can change considerably when the weather conditions change. Those changes can in turn affect indoor surfaces as moisture is tracked in by pedestrian traffic.

You can reduce the chance of slipping and falling by doing the penguin shuffle:

Extend your arms out to your sides for balance (never walk with them in your coat pockets).

Point your feet out (penguins walk flat footed).

Keep your head up.

Slowly take short steps and concentrate on maintaining your balance.

Additionally, the shoes we wear can play a big part in preventing falls. The slickness of the soles and the type of heels worn should be evaluated during adverse weather

conditions to help avoid slips, trips, and falls. After all, have you ever seen a penguin wearing heels? Flat, textured soles of non-slip rubber soles offer far better traction. Also be sure to take an extra moment to ensure your shoelaces are tied correctly.

COMING IN FEBRUARY

The students in grades One, Two and Three are lovingly preparing for a concert on February 13th entitled Fun and Friendship, Stories and Song. This Valentine's celebration will feature a heartfelt musical chocolate box full of songs by the primary choir, instrumental work, games, dance and stories told by some special guests. We hope all of our adorable families can join us for this very special event!

Advice from Garfield Gini Newman

Garfield presented an informative learning evening for parents of Trelawny and Kindree while children enjoyed a fun movie. It was a great evening and it was good to see so many parents take the opportunity to learn more about education in the 21st century. Below are some tips that Garfield offered. We will provide more in upcoming Newsletters.

Ways to help nurture critical thinking in your child

Ensure your child has gathered sufficient background on the topic/issue before attempting to make an assessment or judgment.

Help your child identify the criteria they will use to base their assessment or judgment upon.

For instance, when you are ready to buy a car; what knowledge to you require and what criteria will you use to make a wise decision for you and your family?

LIBRARY NEWS

Blue Spruce & Silver Birch Reading Program

These programs are run by the Ontario Library Association in conjunction with schools and libraries. Students read new, high quality books by Canadian authors and they get to decide which one will receive the Blue Spruce or Silver Birch award. In the Blue Spruce program, primary students read 10 different picture books. For the Silver Birch Express and Silver Birch reading programs, junior students must read at least 5 of the 10 novels listed. After reading the books, students participate in a special voting day in April where they vote for the one that they feel is the best. These are wonderful programs as they help to promote Canadian authors and books, inspire a love of reading, and develop critical literacy skills.

I will be reading the Blue Spruce books to the primary students as they visit me each week in the library. We will keep track of each book as we go so that we are ready to vote in April. We are currently planning for how we will run the Silver Birch reading programs with the Grade 4 and 5 students, but it is hoped they will start reading their books in early February.

A big thank you to the School Council for providing the funding to purchase these sets of books!

FAMILY LITERACY DAY CHALLENGEMonday, January 27th

Family Literacy Day is celebrated each year on January 27th. It is a way for us to remember how important it is to spend time as a family carrying out literacy- or learning-related activities together. This year at Trelawny we will be celebrating Family

Literacy Day with a challenge. We are encouraging all students to spend only 15 minutes with their family completing a learning-related activity. Students will need to record their activity and the class that has the highest percentage of students participating will get a celebration with me in the library.More information about this event will be sent home at a later date..

Happy reading!Mrs. Lucic, Teacher Librarian
