From the pastor…
2015 has been an exciting year for Messiah.
We have welcomed great new staff people. A call committee worked diligently to find a new associate pastor. Messiah has benefitted from their hard work. I have been amazed at how well Pastor Liz has fit into our congregation and added to our life together already. Messiah has added a new full time Children’s
Minister position to build more bridges between our Preschool and the church. Michelle Miefert has joined our staff and her hard work and great ideas have made the transition smoother than I would have imagined. I am excited for the possibilities in 2016 that come from these new opportunities. We added a quarter time position to our staff, Jim Diehm, to assist Pastor Liz with Confirmation and Teen ministry. Jim has been a key volunteer leader in this ministry for years, so it is no surprise he is already invaluable since he has shouldered even more responsibility.
We also said goodbye to some wonderful leaders in 2015. Treasurer Ron Moder resigned after over two decades in that position. He has been a treasure for my ministry and for our congregation. While he is still just a phone call away at his home in Apple Valley, I miss him often. Mike Grimm was only on for a year as the Youth Minister, filling in when Pastor Thadd left. However, he did so well that many called to see if there was any way we could afford to keep him on staff. After seven years as Preschool Director, Pat Hazelwood left that position to pursue other vocational goals. She left Messiah’s preschool better than she found it, Christ centered, financially healthy, near capacity and well respected in our community. Our biggest staff change was also the toughest for me personally. The creation of the full time Children’s Minister position caused the elimination of the existing half time position that had been held by Alicia Keiber for twelve years. Alicia’s passion for our children will be missed. I look forward to the new ways that Alicia finds at Messiah to use her many talents.
2015 saw a lot of hard work by many volunteers to renew our sanctuary. As 2015 closes, the work is nearly done and we look forward to the dedication and celebration on January 31 at 4:30. When the project is completed, barring construction cost overruns it should all be paid for by the money we raised together. Our new Treasurer, Bev Prater, reported just this month that we had received $178,000, which is actually more money than initially pledged. I rejoice at the valuable gift to worship at Messiah for the coming generations that we made in 2015.
Who knows what 2016 will bring? It seems almost sinful to hope to be blessed as richly as we were in 2015, but God is good and God’s grace is abundant so it is only sinful to stop hoping. Finally, I give thanks for the brothers and sisters I have served beside and have been served by in 2015 and for nearly thirteen years. I count this congregation as my blessing, and her people as my family.
Peace, Pastor Karl

Dedication of our Renewed Sanctuary
It has taken almost five years for our sanctuary renewal to move from dream to reality. Renewing our sanctuary for another fifty years of meaningful worship is a great accomplishment. Something that has required so much time and wealth by our members deserves to be celebrated. We will do just that at 4:30 on Sunday, January 31. Our bishop, Suzanne Dillahunt will preside. Our Choirs and band will offer special music. Our brothers and sisters in Christ from St. Pius X will send their Senior Choir and Senior Pastor, Monsignor David Funk to our celebration. It will be a party. Afterward, we will gather for a meal together and to formally say thanks to all of the leaders who gave up significant time to make this big goal a reality. Mark your calendars today to come and celebrate the good things God is doing at Messiah.
Happy New Year!
The church has a tradition to welcome in the New Year. It is called Baptismal Renewal. On Sunday, January 10, Baptism of Our Lord Sunday, at all four services, we have created a very special ritual for baptismal renewal. Everyone that Sunday will be invited to come forward to the font, feel the waters wash over them again, hear a word of blessing, then eat the body of Christ given for us. Time will be made to confess our brokenness, letting go of those things that have kept us from God and a faithful life in the year past. Encouragement will be made to embrace new habits and opportunities that will lead us to realize the hope that God has always had for us. Come, be renewed in the waters by God and be led into the promise of God’s plan for us. Peace, Pastor Karl
You will notice we do not have the Prayer Calendar or Prayer of the
Month in the January newsletter. After years of dedicated service
Carolyn March has decided to let go of this ministry so she can do more
at her place of residence. If anyone would like to take this over, please let
the church office know. Thank you, Carolyn for a job well done.

A Friendly Reminder from the Offering Counting
Crew!
Please follow these suggestions when making contributions:
Always use your offering envelopes, indicating the appropriate amounts (regular/building
fund) in the spaces provided, and your name. This will ensure proper credit and distribution of your gift.
Using check marks in the regular/building fund blocks is not an indication of your intention. Never use tape,
staples, etc. on envelopes. If your contribution is for multiple Sundays, it is not necessary to use additional
envelopes and checks. Just use a single envelope and check indicating how you want the amount to be
distributed.
If you do not have envelopes, please call the church office – 866-4386.
When making contributions for flowers, candles, memorials, organ fund, etc., do not use a regular offering
envelope. Use a plain envelope or an envelope provided for that purpose and write a separate check – do not
combine your regular offering check with anything else. Thank you for your cooperation. Following these
guidelines will facilitate the counting and recording effort and will guarantee proper allocation.
The Messiah Messenger January 2016
Baptism of Our Lord Sunday One of the worship services that many of our members look forward to
every year is coming January 10 this year, Baptism of our Lord. In this
service, we all consider and celebrate our own baptism that calls us into
faith, gifts us with the Holy Spirit, and washes us clean for God. In the
service, special music and a ritual of repentance and recommitment are
moving reminders of God's promise to love us no matter what. There is no
better way to start the new year in worship. Invite friends to this service,
too, so they can experience the power of renewal offered in Christ.

CHASING THE COLD AWAY (Blankets for the HOMELESS)
Outreach will be collecting new or gently used blankets, comforters, and/

Many of the people we serve a meal to at First English are homeless and
sleeping on the streets. They are in need of a blanket to help keep off the
cold during these winter months.
There will be a box in the Welcome Center starting Sunday, January 10 thru January 31.
The need is great, so please consider gathering up those blankets that are no longer being used.
