Winter Sports Waiver

Snow means it’s the season for 4-H club sledding and skiing trips. There are two things you need to remember for proper insurance and risk management coverage (in addition to giving approval to clubs for the trips). One, have the club take out Special Activities coverage through American Income Life. The regular $1/yr/member coverage does not include downhill winter activities, but coverage is provided through the Special Activities program.

Two, participation in Downhill Winter Sports (downhill skiing, tobogganing, bobsledding, snow tubing, and Ice Skating) requires the use of an additional waiver. You can obtain the Winter Sports Waiver at http://www.extension.iastate.edu/4hfiles/RMIowa4HWinterSportsPermissionAgreement-Jan2010.pdf

Clubs will again have the opportunity to participate in the county 4-H fruit sales. This is an important fundraiser that helps support the Monona County 4-H program as well as support for clubs. Plans are very similar to last year. Sales will start January 18, with delivery in March. Watch for more details from your leader. It is important for all Monona County 4-H Clubs to participate in this major 4-H fund raiser.

Iowa Lifts Ban on Poultry Exhibitions

COUNTY NEWS

The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship today announced that the order canceling all live bird exhibitions at county fairs, the Iowa State Fair, livestock auction markets, swap meets, exotic sales and other gatherings of birds due to avian influenza will be lifted on January 1, 2016. "This is very good news and another sign that we continue to recover from this devastating animal health emergency. We know the ban on exhibitions caused some real challenges for those anticipating showing or selling birds, but we appreciate everyone cooperating as we worked to stop the disease and then allow the industry to recover," said Bill Northey, Iowa Secretary of Agriculture.

The Department issued the order prohibiting poultry exhibitions on May 21 in the midst of the outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI). The ban was put into place to minimize spread of HPAI and protect the state's domestic bird population. Lifting the poultry exhibition ban comes as a result of no new cases of HPAI in Iowa since June and the lifting of the final quarantine on December 1. Iowa is now considered free of HPAI. Total of 77 premises and 31.5 million birds were affected with the disease in Iowa. There are 35 commercial turkey flocks, 22 commercial egg production flocks, 13 pullet flocks, 1 chicken breeding flock, 1 mail order hatchery, and 5 backyard flocks.

Livestock Alternate Housing Requests

Livestock projects will be kept at the home of the exhibitor unless superintendents of that species grant permission to house livestock elsewhere. Requests must be made by filling out a request form at the extension office at the time projects are identified.

This does not relieve the 4-H’er of responsibility to care for his/her project. Spot check may be made to provide educational input and to inspect projects following prior notice.
