The park was established in 1873 on lands formerly belonging to the temple of Kan'ei-ji

Situated in the south of Ueno Park, the Shinobazu pond is divided in three sections, Lotus Pond because of the plants that completely cover its surface, Boat Pond from the rental boats it hosts, and Cormorant Pond which lies within the limits of the Ueno Zoo and takes its name from the birds that inhabit it

The pond has a circumference of about 2 km and a surface of about 1,100,000m2. At its center lies Benten Island on which stands the Bentendō temple dedicated to goddess Benzaiten.

Women hoping to become pregnant come here to ask for the goddess's mercy, and those whose wishes have been fulfilled return to pray for their child's good health and protection. Many leave behind dolls as symbols of their children

The National Museum of Western Art, in Tokyo, is the only work by Le Corbusier in the Far East

Page 37: Japan30 Tokyo2 Ueno

Kojiro Matsukata (1865-1950) was a Japanese industrialist who amassed a remarkable collection of Western art between 1916 and 1923, particularly paintings and sculptures of the French artist Auguste Rodin (in fact outside the museum one of several replicas of “The Thinker" is displayed. After the Second World War the collection was transferred to the French government. In 1956 Japan requested to France the return of these works, so the French government agreed on the condition that it was a French architect who developed the project of the building to house such works

Page 38: Japan30 Tokyo2 Ueno

The museum for the Matsukata collection was commissioned to the French Swiss architect Charles-Edouard Jeanneret-Gris (known as Le Corbusier), and the project was completed by three Japanese apprentices of his studio in Paris: Kunio Maekawa, Junzo Sakakura, and Takamasa Yoshizaka

Later, in addition to the Matsukata collection, the museum acquired other works, from the fifteenth to the twentieth centuries

The Thinker (French: Le Penseur) is a bronze sculpture by Auguste Rodinl. There are about 28 full size castings, in which the figure is about 186 centimetres high, though not all were made during Rodin's lifetime and under his supervision

most important public buildings in Japan. It is also in the

tentative list of World Heritage by UNESCO, at a request

made by the French government

The Golden Legend exhibition in Tokyo, was seen by the Bulgarian Ministry of Culture as a major success in the presentation of Bulgaria’s archaeological heritage abroad, after the recent exhibition in the Louvre Museum in Paris dedicated to Ancient Thrace, which was entitled “Thracian Kings’ Epic. Archaeological Discoveries in Bulgaria" (also translated as “The Saga of the Thracian Kings"; in French:L’Épopée des rois thraces Découvertes archéologiques en Bulgarie)
