RYLA GUEST SPEAKER – AN IMPRESSIVE CANDIDTE WHO MADE THE MOST OF HER

OPPORTUNITIES

Taylor Smith visited the club and proved to all why she was a great candidate for RYLA. Taylor, aneighbour of Rotarians, Sue and Peter Jarvis, spoke enthusiastically about her experiences at RYLA.

Having been a tentative starter, Taylor thoroughly enjoyed this Rotary event and has gone on to bigger

and better things after this. See later in this bulletin.

Hannah, our exchange student, is still looking for a good German joke!

Glenda and Hannah are still searching via iPads for a good German joke to tell at our Joker session!

Chris’s jokes are getting better all the time – according to some members.

Hannah’s moment this week described her excitement at finding out that an exchange student had

arrived to stay with her parents in Germany. Even better, Hannah will get to meet her when she goes

home as there will be a crossover in time. President Paul will also be meeting Hannah’s parents when he

travels to Germany – he will meet up with them at the pretty town of Cochem, a beautiful spot with

wineries near the Rhine and Marksburg Castle.

(Have been there many years ago – very

picturesque! Was noted by Alex that the shoes he

was wearing came from Germany.)

Glenda Wahlert was invited to read the Charge to Australia and did so very well.

Liz Mulvaney raised a toast to Rotary International and the Scottish Club of Glasgow where she was born.

YOUTH REPORT: Peter Jarvis

Thanked Taylor for her attendance. Hannah of to surfing school at Jerrabomberra soon.

William Hansen doing well in the US as or outward bound exchange student.

Taylor Smith’s Reflections:

Taylor studies physical training and coaching at UC. Completed a brain dominance test to gain an understanding of how different people think

Gained in confidence – developed a fearlessness

Set personal goals

Has achieved one already – sent of resume to several organisations and within an hour

was employed by the Ainslie Football Club as a massage therapist.

Was impressed by Matthew Davis’s (son of two Jerra Rotarians – Anne and David)

speech and how in 5 short months he has overcome huge adversity after experiencing

major trauma.

INTERNATIONAL REPORT – Robert Chilman

ROMAC presentation next week.

Latua – 11 year old girl – disfigured since birth – is a candidate for ROMAC thanks to Chilly’s hard work. Tonga club is on

board – family has filled out referral forms and it is now up to ROMAC administration – could take 6 – 9 months to get a

decision

Tonga trip has shown strong interest. Two types of assistance: on the trip (physical) before the trip (gathering school

items to take over)

GENERAL BUSINESS:

Cathy sadly reported that our ex-member John Husband has about a week to live and our thoughts go out to

both him and Penny. Chris Hunter to deliver a plant to Penny at home just to let her know that the Club is

aware of their plight and is thinking of them both.

Pam Spencer reminded all about the raffle books for district.

Roster to markets – please look and confirm dates.

Music Festival – 1 – 10 May. Planning to begin soon. Marquee may be available to house us.

Mega Swim – 2nd

May – same time but we will manage as will need less people at festival than last year,

Terry asked club members to note the passing of a fellow Rotarian, Kevin O’Connor in Queanbeyan due to

cancer.

SAD POST SCRIPT:

Very sadly, John passed away on Friday afternoon. The club delayed the delivery

of flowers until the Sunday afternoon and a lovely arrangement in yellow andwhite was delivered by Chris Hunter to Penny at their home in Mawson with a

card from the Jerra Rotary Club.

The following message is to all members:

“ Hallo everyone

We have made arrangements for Johnny's funeral. We would like to invite everyone to join us in

celebrating Johnny's life. It will be held on Friday 13 February 9am at Norwood Park

Crematorium Sandford Rd Mitchell ACT. It will be a simple, beautiful celebration which is what he

wanted.

It will be followed by a wake at Section 57 Mawson Club Heard St Mawson. We have Section 57 at

the Mawson Club from 10.00am until 12 noon (there is another wake after ours!!).

If anyone wishes to continue on after 12 noon we can move into the main bar. Johnny wanted us to

have a beer - crownies or grolsch!

In lieu of flowers, we are having a donation box for Clare Holland House - the hospice where

Johnny died, no pressure though!!

“Members are reminded that we have another "top drawer"; speaker arranged for our meeting onMonday 16 March, when we will be privileged to hear from the Governor-General of Australia, HisExcellency General the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove AK MC (retd). We are planning to alsoinvite members of the Commonwealth Club to attend this meeting, so there is likely to be acapacity crowd for the venue. Accordingly, we ask that members book early for this occasion,partly due to the demand for seats and due to the fact that we have to submit the names ofattendees to Government House prior to the end of the preceding week. So we will be closing offregistrations of members on Wednesday 11 March for this event.”

Paul reports: “Scuba diving the reef was brilliant and we also spent over an hour snorkelling. Plenty of time

by the pool, and also eating and drinking in between activities.”

THE FOOD! CHINESE TONIGHT!

There was again a change-up in the meal for the night. Club members enjoyed Chinese from The Jerra at the big shops- five very

tasty dishes. Thanks, Lizzie for the different menu – lovely meal enjoyed by all!

This week’s report comes from - Paul Robey

Saturday at the markets was a pleasant and fairly busy day forstallholders – business appears to be back to normal again after

the holidays. Anton Pemmer and stepson Liam, Bruce Miller and Paul Robey attended. Liamprovided very capable assistance at the ‘front desk’.

The Cookbook breakdown for a total of 3 books sold is $45 for Hall Rotary and $15 for JerraRotary. The $5 donation was from a grateful market customer who responded to a lost walletannouncement. Two other announcements were made – the first around 7.30am notifying theowner of a white Toyota Van (number plate provided) parked with the headlights on; thesecond around 11.30am for the owner of a white Toyota Van seeking assistance from anyonewith jumper leads!

Cookbook sales have tapered off significantly from the pre-Christmas volumes. These mayimprove a little with better signage at the front desk. So from this point on there is no need torun separate cash boxes. I could not locate the $100 cash float that we had set up for thecookbook sales and which is supposed to be kept in the cookbooks cashbox. It was therewhen I attended the markets on 10 January, so I am seeking the assistance of those whoattended the markets on the 17th, 24th and 31st January for any advice they may have onwhether the float was available on those days. (Ooops – think this was banked a couple ofweek’s ago by another group!! We decided it shouldn’t be left in the cash box! It is safe in thebank.) There are now reasonable supplies of the bags in the container, following Anton’s delivery oftwo more boxes on Saturday. Water sales of 32 bottles exceeded our normal top up supply ofone carton (24 bottles) – so these supplies need review and replacement. In any case, Isuggest that 2 cartons are purchased for next week’s markets.

A JOKE FOR YOU!

An Emergency Call Centre worker in Melbourne Vic, has been

fired, much to the dismay of her colleagues, who are

reportedly unhappy with her dismissal.

It seems a male caller dialled OOO from a mobile phone

stating,

"This is Jonathan Davis and I am very depressed. I am lying

here on a railway track. I am waiting for the train to come so

I can finally go to God."

Apparently, "Remain calm and stay on the line," was not

considered to be an appropriate response.

OUR HISTORY

In 1998 the Rotary Clubs of Queanbeyan and Queanbeyan West Rotary decided to sponsor a new Rotary Club based in Jerrabomberra. Bill Lilley,

John Snedden and Peter Jarvis from Queanbeyan West took on the joint roll of mentoring the development of the new club. (Peter Jarvis went on

to become our Charter President).

Advertising for potential members began in March 1998. After a successful campaign, the Club was chartered on 18 November 1998 with 26

members.

Initial meetings were held at the Jerrabomberra General Store—the venue was very good until we grew in numbers. We then moved to the

Jerrabomberra Community Centre for a few years, and we now meet at the Jerrabomberra Public School Staff Room, on Thursdays (6.15 for 6.30

pm).

(Charter) President Peter Jarvis ran competitions to select a name for our Club Newsletter and a design for the Club banner. There were some

good and some not so good suggestions. Pam Spencer suggested the winning bulletin name ‘Jerraganda’ and David Stevens was the successful

designer of our club banner. The design incorporated a goose and the windmill associated with the original entrance to the estate adjacent to the

Community Centre. Both the Jerraganda and the Club logo have evolved to keep pace with modern times.

We have always been, and continue to be, a vibrant and fun loving club providing valued community service, both locally and internationally. Our

motto is,

“Doing Good and Having Fun”
