    Weekly Headlines

Tonga RAWCS 2014 - Only 2 weeks to go

It has been a long time in the planning, but reality is setting in as we now

only have 2 weeks left until the departure of our RAWCS 2014 Tonga

team. RAWCS projects are an excellent way for Rotarians to contribute to

our community internationally, and our work to assist with the

refurbishment of the Lapaha Public School in Tonga, will be our clubs fifth

RAWCS project. The project team of 15, including seven members of the

Jerrabomberra club, met last Wednesday (3 September) to finalise the

planning and discuss logistics. The excitement was clear. While we have already assisted in renovating

the toilet block, the roofing and water tanks, we will now get to go hands-on with internal walls to build,

windows to fix and doors to replace. Plus of course, cleaning and painting and some hygiene

    education/training as well.

The team aim to set up a blog to report the trips progress, so watch out for more details.

Combined District Conference shaping up to be a great success

The list of speakers for the Combined District Conference in November has been finalised and presents a

great reflection of the Conference theme: Our Youth, Our Future. Many of the speakers are Rotary

alumni, past members of youth programs including Youth Exchange, and Ambassadorial Scholars. The

conference organisers have recently added Berry Rotarian Ken Hutt to the panel. Earlier this year, Ken

paraglided from Cho Oyu in Tibet, the sixth highest peak in the world. Although you may think he is

crazy, Ken is keen to raise funds to help Rotary eradicate polio, and his story will be one not to miss.

Remember, our District will be joined by District 9675 in this wonderful opportunity to meet in

fellowship, to exchange ideas and learn more about why Rotary looks to youth for the future. Sponsor

Ord Minnett has provided a wonderful incentive for registering; please see details included later in this

    edition of the Jerraganda.

President Paul would like to see a great turn out from our club. You are encouraged to go online and

register now, if you have not already done so.

    Hannah Update

It was cuddling baby wombats last

week, now itsback to reality with only

cats to cuddle. Hannah loves Bruce and

Lizs cat and cats also seem to like

Hannah as Anne and Davids cat

    Amadeus demonstrated; her making

    herself comfortable on Hannahs lap.

    This week was Septembers

    business week, with club

    directors reporting on plans

    for the month.

    The RAWCS team are ready

    for Tonga and reports

indicate all is on track for a

    great project.

News of the plans for the

    District Conference also

suggest we will have a very

    successful event in

    November.

The fun run and the wine

    tour are also covered this

    week, with plans shaping up

    well.

We have no recipe this week,

    sorry, but we can only

    provide what we receive in

    the way of contributions.

    We do however have a

caption competition thisweek so send in you captions

    and maybe win a prize.

    Enjoy.

    Meeting Number 8084 September 2014

    To

    Welcome:

President Paul opening the meeting by inviting PP Paul

to read the Charge and Jon to toast Rotary

International. President Paul then welcomed guest

Peter who had met Chilly at the Markets and come

    along to check us out.

Pres Paul also welcomed Colin and Cathy back from the holidays and

noted that even though David B was on LoA he was attending tonight.

Lizzie and Chris are on LOA.

    Business Reports

    Presidents Report

President Paul mentioned that the DG had written encouraging all to register for the District Conference. Pres Paul also

advised he had enjoyed attending the briefing meeting for the Tonga RAWCS project at Chillys on Wednesday 3rd

    and had been

impressed by the planning work Chilly had undertaken. In connection with the Tonga RAWCS project Pres Paul mentioned that

Chilly will be attending a Canberra East Rotary meeting next week to receive a cheque

for $2000 which that club has donated towards the RAWCS project.

In concluding his report Pres Paul asked Sue R to step up, and after getting Sue all

excited that she was about to receive something special, Pres Paul asked her to

present a new membership sponsor recognition pin to PP

Paul. These pins are an initiative of Past International

President Ron as a way of recognising members who

sponsor a new member into the club. PP Pauls recognition

was for bringing Rebecca into our fold.

    Secretarys Report

Glenn reminded Board members that the next Board meeting will be on Wednesday 10th

    .

    Treasurers Report

Jon advised that the handover of treasury duties from David B is in progress. David B mentioned that

although invoices for dues have not yet been issued, the dues for a single member are $284.00 per year

and the dues for a married person (who share a magazine) are $274.00 per year. The difference being a

    magazine subscription.

from other clubs and from some individuals had provided a reasonable sum of

    Joker

Our guest Peter drew the joker ticket D24 possessed by Sue

J who drew the 6 of Diamonds from the pack and the Joker

lived for another day. The joker is now worth $119.00

    SGT Fines:

Glenda was the Fines Mistress for the evening and

    managed to extract $102.00.

    Attendance:

The acting attendance officer Mez, appeared to have lost her creativity

and simply reported an accurate attendance figure of 80%. No Port or

Baileys for the night much to the relief of the President.

    Fairfield Park BBQ

President Paul, PP Paul, Jan, Mez and Sue (taking the photo)

were on volunteer duty on Saturday 6th

    at the inaugural

Fairfield Park Fair. As a first time initiative of a few local

residents from around the Barrack Flat Road and Fairfield

Park area, there was not a huge attendance, but sufficient to

make it a successful venture. It is likely that it will be repeated

next year and grow as a community project. Our club was

pleased to be able to support the day and we cooked

sausages donated by Lindbecks Butcher, and also provided

drinks. Jan reports that takings for the day exceeded $400

    after costs (which were minimal).

    Childrens Emergency Fund

Most members will be aware that District First Lady Denise looks after the District Childrens Emergency Fund. The purpose of

the fund is to allow her to consider the grant of funds to help a family where a child's ill health creates an emergency situation

that may be partially relieved by such a grant. DG Rowley has recently mentioned this to Club Presidents and this short article is

designed to remind members of the funds existence and how we can leverage it if a suitable case arises.

For example, grants may be considered for:

A family needing help with medical bills for a sick child

A car break-down meaning a sick child cannot be easily transported to medical appointments or a family needing help

with cost of petrol or accommodation near a hospital

Help with the cost of a piece of medical equipment for a child.

This fund is not advertised to the general public, but it is intended as a resource to allow consideration of a request by a Club to

help the family of an ill child in their community. The Club should be satisfied of the emergency nature of the situation and the

need for help before submitting an application. Applications should be forwarded directly to Denise at

    [email protected].

    Spotted at the sinkthis

    week were Colin, Terry,

    Kerry, and Hannah. Well

    done Colin, first week back

    and straight into the clean

    up duties.

This weeks reportwas submitted by Peter and Sue Jarvis

The weather was fine as the sun rose on the EPIC markets on Saturday morning. Our stall

was strategically located to catch the warmth of the suns rays from 7am. Bruce and

Glenn demonstrated to Peter and Sue how easy it was to erect the Rotary stall.

The parking arrangements remained as they were for the last 3 months with very little drama. Sue had a tradeys ute pullup wanting access to pick up cabbages. The driver used a trolley to bring about 30 cabbages out and placed them on top of

his tools. He was going to make coleslaw with them.

Peter was approached by a young couple who wanted to pick up oranges from inside the market area. These were

transported out to their tiny hatchback through three trips on a trolley. The bags were really slippery and there were many

stops to replace the bags which fell off. I reckon they were about 25 x 10 kilo bags thrown into their vehicle. The springs on

the back wheels were given a workout.

Bruce reckoned he had about 100 gday mates on the gate and about 200 good mornings. Glenn fretted that he had no

infringers to bring into line. Peter met a bloke called Paul with three passports, British, Kiwi and Australian. The lady with

the ute snuck in through the barricades when Peter wasnt looking and then asked if she coulddrive through the market to

pick up hay bales. She accepted my ruling that she could do this after 11:30am.

There is one unopened box of bags left in the shed and one other box with only a few bags in it. Might be a good idea to

    take some more boxes out.

Market takings totalled $244. This figure was realised with the addition of a cash Donation of $60 (found at a stall and

handed to Sue by an honest shopper).

    OUR HISTORY

In 1998 the Rotary Clubs of Queanbeyan and Queanbeyan West Rotary decided to sponsor a new Rotary Club based in Jerrabomberra. Bill

Lilley, John Snedden and Peter Jarvis from Queanbeyan West took on the joint roll of mentoring the development of the new club. (Peter

Jarvis went on to become our Charter President).

Advertising for potential members began in March 1998. After a successful campaign, the Club was chartered on 18 November 1998 with 26

    members.

Initial meetings were held at the Jerrabomberra General Store the venue was very good until we grew in numbers. We then moved to the

Jerrabomberra Community Centre for a few years, and we now meet at the Jerrabomberra Public School Staff Room, on Thursdays (6.15 for

    6.30 pm).

(Charter) President Peter Jarvis ran competitions to select a name for our Club Newsletter and a design for the Club banner. There were some

good and some not so good suggestions. Pam Spencer suggested the winning bulletin name Jerraganda and David Stevens was the

successful designer of our club banner. The design incorporated a goose and the windmill associated with the original entrance to the estate

adjacent to the Community Centre. Both the Jerraganda and the Club logo have evolved to keep pace with modern times.

We have always been, and continue to be, a vibrant and fun loving club providing valued community service, both locally and internationally.

    Our motto is,
