By Jim HintelmannLITTLE SILVER — Red BankRegional's (RBR) football fortunesreached a low point from 2005-2009when the Bucs went 5-44 but, in thatlast year, a very talented group offreshmen arrived and produced anunbeaten (9-0) record. Hardly unex-pected, that team set the stage for arevival of the Buc program which sawthe Bucs go 5-5 last year and make theNJSIAA playoffs for the first timesince 2004. Those players are seniorsnow and the Bucs appear ready to takethe next step and achieve a possiblewinning record and a championship."The offense is starting to cometogether and is improving with eachscrimmage," said Buc Head CoachNick Giglio.who has six returningstarters on offense and will utilize theWing T. The Bucs have a solid backfield withtailbacks Tajhi Tomaino, JahimereHinton and fullback Dylan Stambaughbut the quarterback position is up forgrabs between Alex Fox and RossGisondi. "Both of them will get play-ing time,"said Giglio. "They are look-ing good in practice." RBR has one ofthe state's top two-way players intjght end-defensive end Garret Sickleswho signed a letter of intent to attendPenn State as a junior. Sickles is oneof the area's top defenders. He recorded72 tackles last year along with ninequarterback sacks, Also returning fromlast year on offense is tackle Anthony
Sardella. Other likely starters on theoffensive side include wide receiverStephen Megill, tackle Logan
McConnell and guards Tim Vilardi andRobert Ness.
RBR will run out of a '4-3' defense
with Sickles and Wally Bogdon at theends, Isaac Coates at nose guard andShane Sullivan at tackle. Starting line-backers will be Stambaugh and RyanSeely, backed up by Gary Johnson. In the secondary will be cornerbacksMario Williams and WilliamNowglows and Gisondi and Tomaino atsafety. "We've had injuries toStambaugh and Hinton in the pre-sea-son, but we have a lot of speed andexperience. We're playing in B Norththis year, which is known as the Blackand Blue Division," said Giglio.

Matawan Football Wants Winning Tradition In New EraPage 4 Jersey Sporting News • September 4 - September 25
By Mike ReadyWith the retirement of legendary
Head Coach Joe Marrucci, John Kayehas some big shoes to fill as the newhead coach. But, as an assistant coachat Matawan for the past18 years, Kayeis expecting a smooth transition. “I’vebeen here a long time and I know thisprogram. I’ve coached half of ourassistant coaches; we’ll be fine.”
The Huskies have been to the statefinals the last three seasons underMarrucci, winning the state champi-onship last year and in 2009. Kaye seesno reason this year’s team can’t com-pete for a title. “We play a physicalbrand of football; we feel that puts usin a position to win.” Matawan shiftsto the B North Division this year, andaccording to Kaye, “It’s a much morephysical league; they play our style ofball. It’s been labeled the Black andBlue Division. We’ll be reunited withsome of our old rivals.”
Once again, the Huskies defense willdictate just how far they go. They’ll beled by senior middle linebacker DanIncle and senior linebacker/strongsafety Glenn Cross. Junior NickTompkins returns to strong-side line-backer/defensive end, while seniorJohn Alston and newcomer LameenSpann compete at weak-side line-backer.
The defensive line has two returningstarters in junior defensive tackleDoug Weber and senior defensive end
Samad Thomas, junior Chris Vearywill be in the rotation. Senior StanleyHall starts at defensive tackle, whilesenior Seamus Weldon and sophomore
Jake Weber rotate at defensive end. In
the defensive backfield, Cross will bemoving between strong safety and
linebacker, with senior OlajuwonThomas and Junior Juan Gonzalez alsoat safety. Juniors Jordon Pisano andfreshman Kahill Haskins are the cor-ners.
Two- year starter Kashaun Barnes isback at quarterback and will be count-ed on for his leadership. Cross lines upat the ‘A’ back position, while Alston,Gonzalez and Incle will all get playingtime in the three- back system.Tompkins is back at tight end, withreturning starting senior ShawnJohnson lining up at wide out. Thomasand sophomore Chris Solomon willbackup.
The Huskies will return three starterson the offensive line; Weldon at righttackle, Samad Thomas at left tackleand Veary at the center position.Veteran defensive lineman DougWeber will start at right guard andnewcomer junior Brandon Murphygets the start at left guard. Third TeamAll-Shore kicker, Mike Creamer isback and will handle the punting dutiesas well this year. According to Kaye,Creamer is one of the most valuableplayers on the team given the way hedictates field position.

HeadCoach Shane Fallon has lost26 players from last year'steam to graduation. and thatwas a team that finished witha 10 -2 season and won theCentral A Division title bygoing undefeated in the divi-sion (5 - 0). This year's teamwill still feature 18 seniorsand many underclassmenwho have some varsity play-ing experience under theirbelt. For this reason CoachFallon leads his team withthe motto, “we do notrebuild, we reload”.
On offense, the Bulldogsreturn quarterback DanRoberto and he has some of hisfavorite targets at receiver returningas well. Seniors John Ryan, SamShaud both return as does two-yearstarting tight end Henry Rosenburg.Carrying the ball for RFH at running

who Coach Fallon feels will earnsome playing time are MelquanReevey, John Oaks and SamEisenstadt.
On defense, this year's team willneed to play well if they are to match
the 59 total points last year'sdefense gave up in 12 games. The defense last season gaveup an average of less thanseven points per game.Travis Clarke will return andanchor the defense at line-backer along with J.P.Jennings and Tom Martello. On the defensive line JohnGreely, Dan Morea, DonBedell, Kevin Clayton andConnor Phillips all return toform a solid defensive front. In the defensive secondaryMike Clarke, Chris Hublerand brothers Addison andDavis Nitto all return. TheBulldogs also return a strongkicking game as JakeD’Amelio returns to handleall kickoff and field goalduties as well as punting.Coach Fallon is aware of thetalent that graduated last sea-son but he also tells thisyear's team to work hard andto build their own identity.Fallon said, “ We strive to becompetitive each week andimprove as the season pro-gresses. In thechampionship game, the BlueBishops defeated Florence by thescore of 42 - 18. According to Ardizzone,“Even though we lost a lot of skilledplayers, if we prepare and work hardwe will be ready for the season”.

Some other return-ing players include: Domingo Perezwho will start along the offensive anddefensive lines, Jaquele Goodmanreturns at defensive back and widereceiver along with NicholasFamularo who returns at linebackerand tight end.

B y Ted KaiserJERSEY SHORE— Aerial connections byquarterbacks and wide receivers, game-breaking runs by running backs andhighlight reel interceptions by defensivebacks usually steal the spotlight in foot-ball. While those plays gain the mostattention, the guys in the trenches are theones who do the dirty work that makesthe difference between a win and a loss. This year in the Shore Conference, two ofthe top players are linemen and it’s timeto give them a share of the spotlight.Monsignor Donovan offensive linemanBrad Henson and Red Bank Regional(RBR) defensive end/linebacker GarrettSickels are both Division-1, BowlChampionship Series school commits.
Henson is the anchor on theMonsignor Donovan offensive line. Heis fresh off a junior campaign in which hewas a 2nd-Team All-Shore selection and a1st-Team All-Ocean County pick. A four-year starter, Henson is going to play akey role for the Griffins who are hopingfor a banner season. “I’ve never beenmore excited. Our offensive line is com-ing together very well,” said Henson. “Ilove playing the line. At my size, it’s theonly sport where I feel like I can con-tribute and go out and play physical.”
After the 2012-2013 school year,
Henson will be off to the University ofVirginia on a full football scholarship. He felt comfortable with the coaching
staff and saw the Cavaliers teammates asbeing close like a family. “There wasn’ta better fit for academics either,”
explained Henson. “On the field, my O-line coach said they will try me at a fewdifferent spots to possibly play early.”
While Henson heads to the ACC,RBR’s Garrett Sickels will move on tothe Big Ten for college. Sickels is a firmcommit to Penn State despite the sanc-tions placed on the school by the NCAA.“When I committed, I committed to a newera of Penn State. I love the coachingstaff and I want to be a part of it,” Sickelssaid. “The coaches stressed a lot that ourrecruiting class can come in and lead.Defensive line coach Larry Johnson is agreat coach and it’s something to beexcited about.”
Sickels is all set for his college plans,so his focus for now is on getting RBRback to the playoffs for a third straightyear. He is coming off a 2011 season inwhich he had 76 tackles (9 for loss), 11sacks and three blocked kicks (one for aTD). “We have set the bar high,” saidSickels. “We want to keep building andwe’re happy we got to states the last twoyears, but we want to be better than 5-5and go further.”
With the leadership and talent ofHenson and Sickels, MonsignorDonovan and RBR could be in for specialseasons. After all, having a strong offen-sive and defensive line are the two mostimportant ingredients needed for a win-ning season.

By Brian Daneman Most people don’t know him but if
you do you can’t help but root for ayoung man like Jeff Farrah. He is oldschool right down to the crew cut andhigh tops. He looks you in the eyewhen he speaks to you and he is anabsolute leader on and off the field both.Last year, Farrah was taken off the fieldin a stretcher during the Freehold gamewith an ankle injury and he was told bydoctors that he would probably be outat least four to five weeks. Two weekslater, Farrah limped out onto the fieldagainst powerhouse Rumson/FairHaven (RFH) and threw a touchdownpass on the very first series.
For Farrah, starting at quarterback thelast two years for Monmouth Regionalhas been more than a challenge.Monmouth Regional has a very smallprogram and they have played a brutalschedule against the likes of Long

Branch, Neptune, Red Bank Catholic,Matawan and RFH. Last year the var-sity team consisted of about 35 play-ers and most of them were underclass-men. Head Coach Jason Morrell hasdone a great job with the talent he has,but the team lacks depth and numbers. This year their schedule is not quite asdaunting and that should bode well forFarrah and for Monmouth Regional.
At 6’0, 180lbs., Farrah is a littleundersized for a potential Division Icollege quarterback but that may behis only negative. His right arm is acatapult and a very accurate one atthat. He is well known and respectedamong the top players throughout theShore Conference and for good reason. He was named top quarterback at theFBU top gun camp where his per-formance was nothing short of amaz-ing in terms of passing accuracy. Thispast summer he was named MVP atthe Elite Recruits Camp and he fin-ished in the top six at the prestigiousESPN Select camp. He is also apotential candidate for the US ArmyAll- American Bowl in January.Farrah has done well at so manycamps over the past two summers it ishard to count, yet he hasn’t receivedthe local recognition in part becausehe is playing for a rebuilding pro-gram.
Farrah could have transferred to anynumber of schools and started for abigger program but he has remainedloyal to his school, his coach and histeammates. This young player hasheart and commitment and those arethings you can’t teach.
This year Farrah has a couple ofweapons; Sheldon McCue, a 6’2, 225lb. physical specimen at tight end andJose Suarez, a senior wide out withbreakaway speed. Jeff Farrah andMonmouth Regional may not breakany Shore Conference records thisyear, but don’t be surprised to seesome pretty impressive numbers andhopefully a scholarship to a top tiercollege program come his way.
By Ted KaiserLACEY— The 2011 season was anuncharacteristic one for the Laceyfootball program. The Lions missedthe playoffs with only a 4-6 record. The struggles were not surprisinggiven the talent graduated from theyear before, but it was a steep dropfrom the undefeated championshipseason they had just experienced. Onthe bright side, the young, lessexperienced Lions gained muchneeded seasoning last fall. NowLacey could be poised to return tocontention for division and statetitles.
There is a lot of reasons to bepositive beginning with quarterbackTommy Kelly who started as asophomore. Kelly will have the lux-ury of a returning 1,500-yard run-ning back in senior Kyle Spatz.Spatz is an explosive runner, as evi-denced by his 247-yard, two touch-down breakout against Central.Kelly will have another weapon atwideout in senior Brandon Boos.Boos might even line up in thewildcat formation on occasion.
Chris Tutela also returns at receiverfor his junior year. Protecting Kellyand creating holes for Spatz is anoffensive line with two returningstarters in center Tyler Walsh andsenior tackle Joe Elefante.
“We feel like the addition of somenew coaches and having a year oftime under Kelly’s belt will helpus,” explained Elefante. “HavingSpatz back after a big season is alsoa big plus for us.”
The defense looks strong forLacey. The Lions have a mix of sen-iors and some potential sophomoresand freshmen in their front seven. Atsafety, both Boos and Tutela returnto add experience in the defensivebackfield. Tutela also serves as thepunter and might be one of the bestin the Shore Conference.
The Class A South Divisionschedule will be a tough one withSouthern Regional, BrickTownship, TR North and other tradi-tionally strong programs. Laceywill be in the hunt for a divisiontitle and a return to the postseason. Standout players for Lacey are Christian Tutela, Kyle Spatz, Brandon Boos and
Joe Elefante.
