p r o j e c t d e s c r i p t i o n : As one walks along the stone path, they will experience a sense of enclosure by the large, intimidating Eucalyptus trees. The trees line the pathway alluding to a wall surrounding the path. Because of the immense size of the trees, one would feel very small and hidden from what is beyond the pathway. At the end of the trail is a natural pool which is sheltered in the forest of Eucalyptus trees. An appealing secluded experience would surround one while walking this private path through nature.

Seclusion

p r o j e c t r e q u i r e m e n t s :To begin this project, we had to select a word on which to focus. I chose seclusion. From there we had to pick just one species of tree to use and create a design plan based on using one to one hundred of that one particular species of tree. I chose to use all 100 trees in order to maximize the feeling of seclusion. Part one of this project was just a basic design plan, part two was to add topography, and part three was to add in detail.

For this project, we had to analyze a painting and determine the dominante emotions that were evoked . So within the series of analyses, I determined this painting, Seals on the Rocks by Albert Bierstadt, creates lots of anxiety based on the main shapes used, triangles, and other factors within the painting. From this analysis, we had to create a model. I chose to do a zoo featuring a small triangular shaped holding tank that creates anxiety based on the crowded tank and the amount of animals featured within it.

p r o j e c t d e s c r i p t i o n : The freeing spirit of Rusted Root’s “Send Me on My Way” has a smooth and natural sound. This inspired the soft curve which undulates down the center mimicking the playful personality of the flute in the song. A natural yet vivid setting is created by lining the soft curve, which emulates a rain garden, with natural elements like rocks, herbaceous perennials, and groundcovers. The unrefined sound of this song is interrupted with drum beats much like the trees and flower beds breaking up the soft but dominant curve.

p r o j e c t d e s c r i p t i o n : In order to compliment this home’s traditional appearance, a formal garden approach was applied to the front yard. The symmetrical spirals create a formal feeling but stay true to a natural scene. To contrast the harsh angles of the roof line, softer rounder forms were used in the planting materials. Bird feeders add height to compliment the peaked roofs. The plants selected are intended to attract wildlife like birds and butterflies. Careful attention was used when selecting plants for the different seasons. The color scheme, a primary triad muted with purple, is realized throughout the year. In spring, the California Lilac adds a nice blue. The Juniper adds yellow color year round and the Bergenia is an evergreen perennial which has bright red flowers in the spring and an abundance of red in the fall. During summertime, the Hydrangeas and Lavender have blue blooms while the Smoketree gives off great red plumes in summer and scarlet red foliage in the fall. The Sedum blooms red from mid-summer to autumn. Although the Holly is an evergreen, it too has red in the fall from the berries. The Yuletide Camellia has beautiful red with yellow flowers in winter through the beginning of spring. Since the house is a soft blue-grey, blue compliments the blossoming Camellias in winter as well as the other evergreens and plants throughout the year.

p r o j e c t d e s c r i p t i o n : The approach for the proposed courtyard is to create a space where pedestrians are primary and vehicles secondary. A unifying leaf pattern creates a cohesive space which ties all main areas together. The main leaf pattern is found in between Caldwell and Denmark. This space is mainly lawn and intended for studying and relaxing. This area, as well as the second leaf, have built in walls for seating. The second and third leaf landmarks are mainly hardscapes. Changing materials create the veins of the leaves and are intended to guide the eye through the space. The third leaf ends in a grand stair case which is surrounded by a rain garden terrace. When heavy rain occurs, channels built into the terraces collect the water. This then allows the area to become a water feature. All planting material is native in order to expand the boundaries of the Founder’s Garden without taking away from the specimen species displayed there.

p r o j e c t d e s c r i p t i o n : Oasis on Oglethorpe is an exclusive infill housing community. With only 12 lots and each house plan unique in style, this is the number one block in the Athens area. Featured in the high end community space is a beautiful water-fire feature that falls into a natural pond setting. The enclosed patio space is the most desirable hang out spot. A raised planting wall ensures privacy around the two luxurious, free standing fireplaces with beautiful covered arbors. Built in seating is an ultimate relaxation destination which ensures you and your family the best in life style and comfort.

p r o j e c t d e s c r i p t i o n : Oak Grove ConservationSubdivision has 102 lots ranging from 8000 to 15000 square feet. It features access to greenspace from every lot. Meandering trails continue throughout a picturesque setting that leads to a scenic lake. The development is about five miles from downtown Athens and the University of Georgia. This plan is at 100 scale. This project required several inventory and analyses before we could begin the master plan portion. After analyzing hydrology, vegetation, slope, soil, master land use, surrounding land, and vicinity the master plan development be-gan. The main requirements were to keep as many of the existing hardwood forests on site as possible while straying from poor soils and steep slopes.

This service learning project was a group project for Barnett Shoals Elementary School. On weekends, this school is a public park for anyone to come and use the playgrounds and picnic facilities. Our challenge was to gut the existing beds filled with honeysuckle, a chinaberry, and weeds while trying to save any existing herbs that were still there. Our main goal was to restore the beds to the original function of having flourishing herbs that could be used in food dishes or in crafts. Originally the design plan was to outline five different beds by color defining different countries of origin. However, towards the end of this experience, our client thought it would be easier to define the beds by use so we ended up changing the beds to be color coded by aromatic, medicinal, tea, dye, and culinary.

This was a quick photoshop rendering I created in order to show the client our hopes for the garden’s appearance. This was created with the original design in mind with the beds defined by country of where the herb originated.

These paintings are acrylic paintings on either canvas or acrylic paper. All the animals except for the owl and elephant were for a concentration piece. I chose to focus on extreme animal senses. I chose 12 animals that exhibited strong eyesight, smell, touch, hearing, or some sixth sense. Not all of them are shown here. The list shown on the other page lists the sense the animal has. The elephant was created for a topic titled “something crumpled” and the owl was painted as a gift for a friend.
