JESUS CHRIST, THE GOD-MAN

We come now in our study of the Christian Fundamentals were we need to deal with the fact that Jesus Christ is 100% God and 100% man.

He is not just God, half God and half man, or just man. Jesus is completely both God and man.

INTRODUCTION

Page 3: Jesus Christ, The God-Man CHRISTIAN FUNDAMENTALS

JESUS CHRIST, THE GOD-MAN

It was necessary for Jesus, who is God, to also be a man.

It is only by being both 100% man and 100% God that he could fulfill all the prophecies concerning him in Scripture and provide the only acceptable

payment for man’s sin.

INTRODUCTION

Page 4: Jesus Christ, The God-Man CHRISTIAN FUNDAMENTALS

JESUS CHRIST, THE GOD-MAN

Scripture records Jesus as being both God and man.

We will now look at both Jesus as God and Jesus as man.

We will see why it is that Jesus, because he was 100% man and 100% God, was able to pay that acceptable price for our sins.

INTRODUCTION

JESUS CHRIST, THE GOD-MAN

There are many sections of Scripture which show Jesus as being God. There is one that stands out, however, and that is found in John 1:1-5,14,

John 1:1–5 (KJV) 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 The same was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men. 5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.

JESUS CHRIST IS 100% GOD

Page 6: Jesus Christ, The God-Man CHRISTIAN FUNDAMENTALS

JESUS CHRIST, THE GOD-MAN

We just read about the Word being with God in the beginning and making all things. Verse 14 ties it all up and shows Jesus is God!

John 1:14 (KJV) 14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

JESUS CHRIST IS 100% GOD

JESUS CHRIST, THE GOD-MAN

Paul in writing to the Hebrews speaks of Jesus as God. He speaks of Jesus being greater than the prophets; being greater than the angels. Here is what is

recorded in Hebrews 1:7 – 8.

Hebrews 1:7–8 (KJV) 7 And of the angels he saith, Who maketh his angels spirits, and his ministers a flame of fire. 8 But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom.

JESUS CHRIST IS 100% GOD

JESUS CHRIST, THE GOD-MAN

Did you know Paul is actually reminding the Hebrew believers here of what God had already spoke in Scripture? Take a look at Psalm 45:6.

Psalm 45:6 (KJV) 6 Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: the sceptre of thy kingdom is a right sceptre.

Just in case there is any question about this take a look at what is prophesied in Numbers.

JESUS CHRIST IS 100% GOD

JESUS CHRIST, THE GOD-MAN

Numbers 24:17–19 (KJV) 17 I shall see him, but not now: I shall behold him, but not nigh: there shall come a Star out of Jacob, and a Sceptre shall rise out of Israel, and shall smite the corners of Moab, and destroy all the children of Sheth. 18 And Edom shall be a possession, Seir also shall be a possession for his enemies; and Israel shall do valiantly. 19 Out of Jacob shall come he that shall have dominion, and shall destroy him that remaineth of the city.

JESUS CHRIST IS 100% GOD

Page 10: Jesus Christ, The God-Man CHRISTIAN FUNDAMENTALS

JESUS CHRIST, THE GOD-MAN

Jesus is that Star out of Jacob.

Revelation 22:16 (KJV) 16 I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star.

Jesus is that Sceptre we read of. The men who entrusted to accurately translate the King James Bible knew this, that’s why they chose to capitalize the word Sceptre. You won’t find that same capitalization in your new and supposedly

better translations. Of course, Jesus is not held to the same level of esteem by the groups of reprobates and sodomites who sell their new versions.

JESUS CHRIST IS 100% GOD

Page 11: Jesus Christ, The God-Man CHRISTIAN FUNDAMENTALS

JESUS CHRIST, THE GOD-MAN

What we, as Bible believing Christians see here, in our King James Bible, is God the Father calling Jesus, His only begotten Son, God. This matches up with the

rest of Scripture as a whole!

Hebrews 1:13 reminds of again that Jesus is superior to the angels.

Hebrews 1:13 (KJV) 13 But to which of the angels said he at any time, Sit on my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool?

JESUS CHRIST IS 100% GOD

If your religion states that Jesus is an angel, just like Lucifer, than you must be having troubles with what we just read.

The Republican candidate for president here in 2012, Mitt Romney, believes this. He has, after all, professed to be a Mormon. The Mormons believe Jesus

and Lucifer are brothers.

What you believe can harm you!

JESUS CHRIST IS 100% GOD

Page 13: Jesus Christ, The God-Man CHRISTIAN FUNDAMENTALS

JESUS CHRIST, THE GOD-MAN

Let’s take a look at Jesus as 100% man. John 3:16 is a great segway into this discussion.

John 3:16 (KJV) 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

This shows that Jesus is not only 100% God, after all Jesus is the only begotten Son of God. It also shows that Jesus is 100% man because he was born into

this world. That’s what begotten means!

JESUS CHRIST IS 100% MAN

Page 14: Jesus Christ, The God-Man CHRISTIAN FUNDAMENTALS

JESUS CHRIST, THE GOD-MAN

It is extremely important to realize that in order for our sins to be paid for, Jesus had to be God. Otherwise, a man, without being God could have paid the price. But we know this to be impossible for man. It is also equally important to realize

that Jesus had to be a man to pay for our sins. Scripture dictates this.

The plan to overcome sin brought into the world by man was shared back in Genesis when the sin was committed and confronted by God.

JESUS CHRIST IS 100% MAN

Genesis 3:14–15 (KJV) 14 And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life: 15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

It was prophesied by God Himself that payment would be made by the seed of the woman.

JESUS CHRIST IS 100% MAN

JESUS CHRIST, THE GOD-MAN

I believe Eve understood what God was saying here. We see what she speaks in Genesis 4:1.

Genesis 4:1 (KJV) 1 And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the LORD.

I believe she thought Cain would be the promised seed from Genesis 3:15. He wasn’t of course, but Eve was expecting it. This also brings out the idea that the

seed would have to be begotten and begotten from a woman.

JESUS CHRIST IS 100% MAN

Page 17: Jesus Christ, The God-Man CHRISTIAN FUNDAMENTALS

JESUS CHRIST, THE GOD-MAN

Galatians 4:4 – 5 has this to say.

Galatians 4:4–5 (KJV) 4 But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, 5 To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.

In order for Jesus to pay the price of sin committed by man, he had to fulfill the law. He began this work by being born into the world through a woman.

JESUS CHRIST IS 100% MAN

Page 18: Jesus Christ, The God-Man CHRISTIAN FUNDAMENTALS

JESUS CHRIST, THE GOD-MAN

Being born of a woman made it lawful. Being born with the blood of God made the payment for sin acceptable by God.

Hebrews 9:22 (KJV) 22 And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.

Jesus had to be both God and man to accomplish what he accomplished!

But let’s look a little further at how special the idea of Jesus being born into this world is.

JESUS CHRIST IS 100% MAN

Isaiah 7:14 (KJV) 14 Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

This shakes the faith of so many because they just are unable to understand how a virgin can give birth. The simple answer is God can do all things! Start

with this idea in your pea brain and let God expand on it for you.

So what does this name Immanuel mean?

Once again, Scripture tells us!

JESUS CHRIST IS 100% MAN

Page 20: Jesus Christ, The God-Man CHRISTIAN FUNDAMENTALS

JESUS CHRIST, THE GOD-MAN

Matthew 1:22–23 (KJV) 22 Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, 23 Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.

Scripture is wonderful! Not only does God reiterate the original prophecy for us, He adds the meaning to the name Immanuel.

Which being interpreted is, God with us.

Bring forth a son, Man; God with us, God!

JESUS CHRIST IS 100% MAN

Page 21: Jesus Christ, The God-Man CHRISTIAN FUNDAMENTALS

JESUS CHRIST, THE GOD-MAN

We can also read just before this how it all happens and what it means.

Matthew 1:20–21 (KJV) 20 But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. 21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.

Jesus is that promised one that would save his people from their sins. Jesus was that promised one going all the way back to Genesis 3:15!

There are many references to Jesus as the son of man and son of God in Scripture.

Mark 1:1 (KJV) 1 The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God;

The Gospel preached by a man who is called the Son of God.

Unclean spirits recognized Jesus the man as God.

Mark 3:11–12 (KJV) 11 And unclean spirits, when they saw him, fell down before him, and cried, saying, Thou art the Son of God. 12 And he straitly charged them that they should not make him known.

These unclean spirits knew, but it was not time to have this revealed, therefore the charge given to them by Jesus.

The man with the unclean spirit named Legion knew who Jesus was.

Mark 5:7 (KJV) 7 And cried with a loud voice, and said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of the most high God? I adjure thee by God, that thou torment me not.

The centurion at the Crucifixion of Jesus knew.

Mark 15:39 (KJV) 39 And when the centurion, which stood over against him, saw that he so cried out, and gave up the ghost, he said, Truly this man was the Son of God.

I find it amazing that we have seen instances of Jesus being recognized as the Son of God by every group except the people he came to save in the first place.

There are many references that show Jesus as the Son of man.

This reference has Jesus calling himself the Son of man.

Luke 22:69 (KJV) 69 Hereafter shall the Son of man sit on the right hand of the power of God.

Mark 2:10 (KJV) 10 But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (he saith to the sick of the palsy,)

Jesus knew he would be rejected by his own as we see here.

Mark 8:27–29 (KJV) 27 And Jesus went out, and his disciples, into the towns of Caesarea Philippi: and by the way he asked his disciples, saying unto them, Whom do men say that I am? 28 And they answered, John the Baptist: but some say, Elias; and others, One of the prophets. 29 And he saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? And Peter answereth and saith unto him, Thou art the Christ.

JESUS CHRIST, THE GOD-MAN

This was revealed to Peter by God. Jesus told Peter he was blessed because of it. The revelation of Jesus being the Christ is to be kept quiet at this time,

however.

Mark 8:30–31 (KJV) 30 And he charged them that they should tell no man of him. 31 And he began to teach them, that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders, and of the chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again.

While Peter and the disciples were to keep quiet about the revelation of Jesus as the Christ during the time Jesus was still alive, this changed after he was

crucified, buried and risen from the dead. We are to boldly pronounce this now and not be ashamed to do so!

Mark 8:38 (KJV) 38 Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.

Jesus speaks of himself as the Son of man again after the transfiguration.

Mark 9:9 (KJV) 9 And as they came down from the mountain, he charged them that they should tell no man what things they had seen, till the Son of man were risen from the dead.

This also brings out the idea that once he was risen from the dead all the things that the disciples had seen while with him were to be told.

JESUS CHRIST, THE GOD-MAN

Scripture shows us overwhelmingly that Jesus was and is both God and man. Not just God and not just man, but 100% God and 100% man.

Jesus had to be both God and man in order for his payment for sin to be acceptable to God.

CONCLUSION

Page 32: Jesus Christ, The God-Man CHRISTIAN FUNDAMENTALS

JESUS CHRIST, THE GOD-MAN

Under the Law, the blood of animals was required to make atonement for sin. The priest would have to offer the blood of an animal to take care of his own sin first, and then offer the blood of an animal for the sins of the people. This only

allowed for atonement once and new sins would require new sacrifices. But the blood was required for remission of sin as we read again from Hebrews.

Hebrews 9:22 (KJV) 22 And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.

CONCLUSION

Page 33: Jesus Christ, The God-Man CHRISTIAN FUNDAMENTALS

JESUS CHRIST, THE GOD-MAN

Scripture tells us the blood of animals does not make a permanent atonement for sin.

Hebrews 10:4 (KJV) 4 For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins.

CONCLUSION

Page 34: Jesus Christ, The God-Man CHRISTIAN FUNDAMENTALS

JESUS CHRIST, THE GOD-MAN

Scripture also tells us what does make atonement for our sin once and for all.

Hebrews 10:9–10 (KJV) 9 Then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God. He taketh away the first, that he may establish the second. 10 By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

CONCLUSION

Page 35: Jesus Christ, The God-Man CHRISTIAN FUNDAMENTALS

JESUS CHRIST, THE GOD-MAN

Jesus had no sin because his Father was God. The blood of Jesus was perfect and therefore able to pay the eternal price required for sin. He did not offer

himself up for his own sin, because he had no sin, but He did offer himself up for our sin. Because of what we read in Hebrews 10:10, we know this payment was

called acceptable by God.

CONCLUSION

Page 36: Jesus Christ, The God-Man CHRISTIAN FUNDAMENTALS

JESUS CHRIST, THE GOD-MAN

We have sinned against an infinite God. Our own good works cannot save us; we have to count on the offering Jesus made of himself as payment for our sin.

This was freely offered by Jesus to whosoever would receive it.

John 3:16 (KJV) 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

CONCLUSION

Page 37: Jesus Christ, The God-Man CHRISTIAN FUNDAMENTALS

JESUS CHRIST, THE GOD-MAN

Will you believe on Jesus, the God-Man, who offered up himself as the only acceptable payment for sin?

Do you believe that Jesus’ death, burial and resurrection has eternally secured your salvation once you do believe on him?

This is the most important decision you will ever make in your life!

Believe and be saved. Once you are saved, do not be ashamed of Jesus and boldly proclaim the Gospel that he has provided us!

CONCLUSION
