Given the nature of the role and the geographical location, the College is willing to consider full and part-time applications, as part of a job sharing arrangement. Role of the Education Assistant at Nagle Catholic College

The primary goal of the Education Assistant is to support the educational opportunities and interventions

Role overview

Education Assistants are required to undertake the prescribed duties of employment as detailed by the

General Learning Support Assistance may vary from general class support to working with small groups of students for particular activities to providing for the needs of an individual student. Specific roles, tasks and responsibilities will be varied depending on specific needs of the individual, numbers of students and level of assistance required and the types of programs operating within the school. Generally, duties of the Education assistant include:

Provide in-class support to students including help with understanding, guidance in completing

assignment tasks and homework in all subject areas. Be supportive by listening, encouraging,

reassuring, directing, redirecting, explaining, reinforcing and practising skills, concepts and

instructions

Build a relationship with the whole class (circulate and assist the whole class)

Answer students’ questions honestly and directly and direct to teacher if unable to provide satisfactory solution

Demonstrate an understanding of sound skills in all learning areas, especially literacy and numeracy

Direct students to appropriate resources for research

Possess a high standard of information technology skills and applications

When a student shows inappropriate behaviours or difficulty with application to tasks the teacher must be made aware as soon as possible

Demonstrate a knowledge of learning difficulties and specific strategies to assist students with learning difficulties to reach their full potential

Support the teacher as directed with various tasks, resources and student/s

Develop positive relationships with all staff and work as part of a team

Develop positive relationships with students

Provide appropriate encouragement and positive reinforcement for students

Instruct students in small group sessions for a specialised program, for example Quicksmart Maths, Intensive Literacy Intervention, Independent Living, under direction of teacher

Demonstrate ability to work with all students in high school setting, regardless of specific needs, disabilities

Monitor and supervise hygiene and self-care programs such as dressing, eating

Have an understanding of the physical needs of students as well as their allergies and medication

Mentor students in the workplace learning environment in the local business community

Write in or assist student to write in school diary to maintain communication between home and school

Assist in the development of learning resources and assessment tools

Encourage students to learn independently and foster social integration with peers under the direction of the classroom teacher

Special Needs Academic Support Education Assistants may be required to assist in the implementation of special programs for specific curriculum needs, individual mobility needs or personal hygiene requirements. This may involve assisting with the implementation and delivery of social skills programs, protective behaviour or behaviour management programs, speech, physio or occupational therapy programs, life skills and work based programs or transport training as directed by the principal and learning support coordinator.

Monitoring and/or supervision of hygiene and self-care programs, such as dressing, eating, toileting, and for personal needs

Students mobility needs, such as lifting, handling, positioning and transferring a student from one position or place to another

Maintaining, cleaning, setting up and storing of specialised equipment such as communication and vision aids, braillers etc

Recharge essential equipment such as electric wheelchair and stair chair batteries, computers, cameras

Scribe, note take, interpret the needs of hearing impaired students or those with a significant disability

Assist with the use of orthotic devices, specialised equipment and augmentative communication programs either aided or unaided

Assist with specific instructional programs as directed by the teacher/learning support coordinator
