ABOUT THE FRANCISCAN FRIARS OF THE ATONEMENT

Founded at Graymoor, Garrison, NY in 1898 by Fr. Paul Wattson, the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement is as a distinct religious community within the Franciscan family, following a founding charism of unity and “at-one-ment” — the unity of men and women with God and with one another — in simplicity, poverty and peacemaking to minister to people of every race, religion, and walk of life.

They bring witness to Gospel values by living and working with the poor and marginalized throughout the world. Social and pastoral ministries serve the needy; the homeless; people living with HIV; those in hospitals, nursing homes and hospice; and people seeking recovery from alcoholism and chemical dependency. All Friar ministries are known for a spirit of welcome for all who seek help, whether through an elementary education, campus ministry or prison chaplaincies. Annually, the Friars work to serve more than 35,000 people.

Through their inter-faith and ecumenical work, they have been recognized by Pope Benedict XVI as leaders in the international movement to heal the divisions within Christianity and among all faiths.
