Our Lady of the Angels Mission Statement
As a Eucharistic Community empowered by the Holy Spirit, our mission at Our Lady of the Angels parish is to be a welcoming place of worship
and friendship. Through work, play, and prayer, our parish will offer guidance, education and service to all.
It is natural to have a sense of betrayal after hearing Bishop Sulli-van’s letter. A similar letter was read in many of the dioceses across the coun-try. It is sad to realize that many dioceses still have to face the same blood-letting so that God’s truth and justice will be made manifest. I take no com-fort in the fact that all Churches and social institutions will have to face the same scrutiny.
Jesus faced the same betrayal with his so-called ‘disciples” in the Gos-pel passage and today as did Joshua in the first reading. The great paradox of these betrayals is that although the disciples believed in Jesus and his mes-sage, that belief did not stop them nor us today from betrayal and denial. Contrast that with Jesus’ faithfulness; that same steadfast love and resolute fidelity that stood at the heart of the covenant with Israel is now found in the new covenant. The contrast couldn’t be greater: Humanity’s faithlessness more than matched by God’s faithfulness.
We need to ask ourselves: given human frailty, is it possible for us to be faithful to the Lord, or should we just throw in the towel and resign our-selves to infidelity and betrayal on every level of our existence. This of course will lead and has led many to abandon the church and religion instituted by Jesus Christ himself that leads us to eternal life.
It is much healthier to recall the words of the Joshua: as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord. Like Joshua, we, too, have come to know the Lord as Savior, through the gift of the Eucharist. He is the only one who can bring us out of the slavery of sin and who performs great miracles and mighty words before our very eyes. Jesus is the only one who can forgive. That is why he came. If someone has hurt you or disappointed you take that individual to Eucharist and ask Jesus to heal their pain that caused them to hurt others and to heal your pain. This is the way Jesus designed the Gift or Forgiveness.
Joshua invites Israel to choose between the ways of the world and service to the Lord. That same invitation and choice is placed before each one of us and individuals and as a community of faith each day. Let us pray that Israel’ response will be ours: Far be it from us to forsake the Lord for the ser-vice of others gods…therefore we also will serve the Lord, for he is our God.
Did you know that the name “Jesus” is Greek in origin. Mary and Joseph would have called Jesus by his Hebrew name: Joshua. Just as Joshua lead the Israelites into the Promised Land so does Jesus constantly lead us to the Promised Land. He does this through the gift of Eucharist, never forget this and never let anyone lead you astray from the incalculable gift.
The Peach Festival was a resounding success. My thanks and prayers go out to all those who worked so hard to make it such. You are indeed a blessing to the parish and to me!
