Virudhunagar Hindu Nadars’ Senthikumara Nadar College, the sanctum of knowledge was founded

in 1947. Ever since, the awe-inspiring institution with its celestial vision has been shaping every

generation to reach skylights in their lives. The Institution has attained an eminent status with 25 UG, 15

PG, 11 M.Phil. and 10 Ph.D Programme. The UGC granted Autonomous status to the institution in 2012.

The college is accredited with A Grade by NAAC in the fourth cycle of accreditation. The institution has

secured 53rd rank in NIRF Ranking 2020 in College category by the Ministry of Human Resource

Development, New Delhi. To add few more feathers to its cap, the college has been recognised as a

DST - FIST sponsored college and DBT STAR College. Today, after 74 years of its inception, VHNSN

College has grown from strength to strength, scaling new heights and crossing many milestone on the

academic road. Even a casual glance at the campus of this college will speak volumes for its

multidimensional development. The sprawling campus dotted with lush green trees, the imposing and

massive buildings, the sophisticated infrastructure with the state of art technology, the computerized and

well - stocked library, the committed and competent team of staff and the enlightened management has

collectively transformed this great institution into a towering colossus, standing astride and the pinnacle

of academic excellence. The college of 150 acre campus comprises of sufficient infrastructure, to satisfy

the need of curricular, co-curricular and extra-curricular activities.

Society for Plant Research was established in the year 1988 by Prof. S.K.Bhatnagar, Founder

Secretary General. The society was established with the view to provide an open platform to the

researchers in various disciplines of Botany, Plant Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Plant

Biotechnology etc. Besides this, organizing Conferences and Workshops under the aegis of Society for

Plant Research is an essential activity to facilitate scientific discussions, exchange of view and

interaction among scientists. Publication of research journal VEGETOS was also initiated in the year

1988.

About the Seminar

The Seminar focuses on the advances in Molecular Cell Biology and it leads to the development of

whole range of techniques for manipulating genomes, collectively termed as “Biotechnology”. Biotechnology

has also catalyzed a renewed emphasis on the importance of biological and genetic diversity and its

conservation. The methods of biotechnology now permit a greater understanding of both species and genetic

diversity in plants, the mechanism by which that variation is generated in nature, and the significance of that

variation in the adaptation of plants to their environment. They allow to the development of rapid methods of

screening germplasm for specific characters and promote more effective conservation strategies by defining

the extent of genetic diversity. Tissue culture-based techniques are available for conserving germplasm that

cannot be maintained by more traditional methods. Also sophisticated informatics systems enable information

on the plant genetics and molecular biology to be cross-related to systematic, ecological and other data

through international networks. Therefor the Seminar will discuss on Biotechnology and its application in the

utilisation of plant genetic resources through mass clonal propagation in-vitro, in genetic manipulation, in

aspects of phytopathology and safe distribution of germplasm, in characterization and, importantly, in

conserving germplasm.
