COACH-PLAYER-PARENTCOMMUNICATIONS

Ourgoalasastaffistopromoteafamilyatmospherewhereallparentsandstudentsarecomfortable.Thecoachingstaffwillstrivetomakesurealloftheparentsandstudentsareonthesamepage.

StudentsareexpectedtomeetwithCoachHaferfirst,iftheyhaveanissueorproblem.IfaCoachreceivesapointofcontact(e.g.,in-person,email,phonecall)fromaparent/familymemberbeforehearingfromthestudent,thecoachwillpolitelyaskthatthestudentcomestothecoachfirst–asdirectedinthe4-StepJoplinBasketballCommunicationProcess.ThisprocessstreamlinesthecommunicationprocessandpromotesaccountabilitytoallstudentswithintheJoplinHighSchoolboys’basketballprogram.

Therewillbetimesduringtheseasonwhenaparentorplayermaybeconfusedaboutwhysomethinghappensthewayitdoes.Pleaserememberthatknowledgeisthebestwaytofindasolution.Therearemanythingsthatarepartofthegameplanthatarenotseenorheardduringagame.Theseinstructionstakeplaceatpractice,inthelockerroom,onthebus,filmsession,orinthehuddleonthefloor.Theonlywaytobeclearaboutwhatishappeningonthefloorduringagameistogetalloftheinformationsothataclearjudgmentcanbemade.ThisiswhywestressthatplayerscomeseeCoachHaferiftheyareconfusedabouttheirrole,playingtime,etc.

□ 24-HOURSRemember,immediatelyfollowingagame,winorlose,isatoughtimetotalktothecoach.Usuallythecoach,playerandparentareveryemotional.Pleaseadheretothe“24-hour”rule.Waituntilthenextdaytocontactthecoachwithanissue.Usuallybythen,bothsidesmightbemorerationalandabletofindasolutiontotheproblem.CoachHaferpreferscommunicatinginpersonratherthanoverthephoneoremail.Ifwecannotmeetinperson,speakingoverthephoneisthesecondbestwaytocommunicate.Emailandtextmessagingisthelastformofcommunication,ifwecannotfindatimetomeetorspeakoverthephone.



TRY-OUTS

WewillbeginourfirstpracticeonMonday,October30th.Duringthisweek,studentswillbeevaluatedforplacementinourprogram.Eachparticipatingstudentwillbegivenaminimumoftwodaystodemonstratetheirskilllevel,workethic,andbasketballknowledgeinfrontoftheJoplinboys’basketballcoachingstaff.

Aseriesofcutswilltakeplaceduringthisfirstweek,withthefirstroundtakingplacefollowingTuesday’spractice.Ifnecessary,asecondcutwilltakeplacethefollowingpracticeonWednesdaythe1st.OnWednesdaythe1st,eachteamintheprogramwillbeestablishedandpracticeswillcontinueasnormal.

It is our goal to give every student a fair and honest evaluation. Therefore,eachstudentwillbeevaluatedbasedonsixfactorsthatwefeelareextremelyimportant in order to produce a successful basketball program at the highschoollevel.

Thesixfactorsareacademics,basketballskill,basketballIQ,coach-ability,effort,

characterandcommunication.Adescriptionofeachareaisfoundonthefollowingpage.Pleasenotethattheseareasareusedasameanstohelpwiththeprocessofelimination.However,studentsmustfirstandforemostdemonstratetheabilitytocompetitivelyplaybasketballatthehighschoollevel;otherwisetheywillnotbeacandidateforteamplacement.

Thiswillbeanintenseweekandweappreciateeachstudentputtinghimselfinapositiontocompeteforarosterspot.Cuttingstudentsisthehardestthingweascoacheshavetodo.Unfortunatelyitisthenatureofthissport.

Eachstudentmustunderstandthatinaperformancebasedculture,rosterspotsareearnedonanongoingbasis.Thisbeginswithsummerstrength&conditioning,opengymattendance,initialtry-outs,concludingatthecompletionoftheseason.

andrest.

COACHESCRITERIAFORPLAYEREVALUATION

1. ACADEMICSEachplayerinourprogramisaSTUDENT-athlete.Beingmembersofourbasketballprogramisabi-productoftheeducationalinstitutionofJHS.ThereforetheexpectationisthateachplayeradherestoandexceedstheeligibilityrequirementssetforthbytheMSHSAA,JoplinR-8SchoolDistrictandJoplinHighSchool.IfastudentisNOTeligibleacademically,thentheycannotplay.Academicswilltakeprecedencetoathleticsinourprogram.

2. SKILL(Approx.WeightAssessed=70%)

Student-athleteswillbecritiquedonwhetherornottheyhavetheskilltoplaycompetitivehighschoolbasketball.Skillreferstotheirabilitytodefend,shoot,pass,dribble,rebound,anddemonstratehigh-levelfundamentals.

3. BASKETBALLIQ

Referstothestudent-athletes’knowledgeofthegame.Thisiscriticalaseachplayerwillneedtoblendhisskillsandtalentsintoanorganizedandstructuredsetting.Ourprogramwillchallengetheseathletesmentallyastheywillbeintroducedtoawidevarietyofconcepts,terminologies,andschemes.

4. COACH-ABILITY&ATTITUDE

Ourcoachingstaffislookingforyoungmenwhowillacceptourteachingandcoaching.Weexpecteveryplayertorespectthedecisionsthatwemakeascoaches,haveawillingnesstobetaughtandcoached,andfollowthephilosophyofourprogramatalltimes.Attitudeisextremelyimportantwithinourprogram!

5. CHARACTER&COMMUNICATION

Ourphilosophyistokeepstudent-athleteswhowillrepresentJoplinHighSchool,themselves,andtheirfamilywiththeutmostcharacter.Webelievethattheavenueofsportmorethananyothersourcedemonstratesthetruecharacterofhumanbeings.Therefore,wewantourplayerstobeself-less,encouragingtoteammates,respectfulofouropponents,officials,andfans,andhavegenuinejoytocompeteinthegameofbasketball.Additionally,ourplayerswillcommunicateearlyandresponsiblyregardingallaspectsofourbasketballprogram.

PROGRAMGUIDELINES&EXPECTATIONS



ACADEMICS

Inkeepingwiththebeliefthatparticipationinathleticsisaprivilegeandnotaright,certainstandardsofeligibilityhavebeenestablishedbytheMissouriStateHighSchoolActivitiesAssociation(MSHSAA).TheJoplinHighSchoolboys’basketballprogramwillendorseandimplementtheMSHAArulesandregulationsalongwiththeJoplinR-8SchoolDistrictandJHSacademicpolicyforparticipation.

Whileweareawareoftheimportantrolethatathleticsplayinthedevelopmentofstudents,wearealsocommittedtothephilosophythattheprimarypurposeofourprogramistoacademicallypreparestudentstobecomeproductivecitizensupongraduation.

Allstudentathletesmustmaintainaminimum2.0GPAinordertobeateammember;however,weexpectstudentstohaveahigherGPAthantheminimum.Asateam,westriveforexcellenceandhaveateamgoalofa3.0+GPAeachseason.

Thecoachingstaffwillworkwitheachstudentathletetoensuretheyreceivethenecessaryeducationalassistance.Settingspecificandrealisticexpectationsisimportantforindividualandteamsuccess.Onthebasketballcourtandintheclassroom,studentathletesmustlearntoexpandtheircapabilitiestoachievetheirgoalsandaspirations.Ourgoalistoensureourteamisfullypreparedforlifebeyondhighschool.

Classtruancy(skippingclass)willresultindisciplinaryaction,whetheranentireclasswasskippedorjustaportion.Thisconsequencewillbesimilartoanunexcusedabsenceatpractice.

Eachplayermustattendallclassesinordertoparticipateinpracticeoragamethatday.Exceptionsaremadeforappointmentsorpre-arrangedabsences.

Failuretoperformintheclassroommayresultindismissalorsuspensionfromtheteamatthediscretionofthecoachingstaff.Failuretoperformintheclassroommayalsoaffectthecoachingstaff’sdecisionswhenteamsareassignedatthebeginningoftheseason.

HAZING

WehaveaZEROTOLERANCEPOLICYforhazing.PlayersareexpectedtofollowallStateandFederallawsalongwithJoplinR-8SchoolDistrictandJoplinHighSchoolpolicies.

Ontopoffacingpunishmentfromthepolice,schooldistrictandJHS;playerswhobreakthis

policymayresultindismissalorsuspensionfromtheteamatthediscretionofthecoachingstaff.

" Playersareexpectedtorefrainfromnegativecomments,trashtalkingandorphysicalconfrontationswithteammates.

" Playersareexpectedtodemonstrateapositiveattitudealongwithpositivebodylanguage.Playersthatshowcaseanegativeattitudeorbodylanguagewilllosetheprivilegetopracticeandplaygames.

" Playersareexpectedtoknowthedifferencebetween“hurt”and“injured.”Hurtmeansyouhaveobviouspainbutyouarecapabletocontinueplayingbecausethepainismanageable.Injuredmeansyouhavepainthatisnotmanageableandbeyondyourpainthresholdwhereyouneedtoseekmedicalattention(e.g.,teamtrainer).

" Playersthatareconsidered“injured”willnotbeclearedtopracticeuntiltheTeamPhysician,Trainerapproves.

" Playersareexpectedtoiceafterpracticeorduringpracticeiftheyareinjured.Injurydoes

notexcuseaplayerfromattendingpractice." Playersareexpectedtotakecareofschoolpropertyandequipmentincludingthelocker

room,maingym,gym2&3,bathrooms,etc.Nospittingorgumtossingingym.Wewillcleanthegymofallgarbageaftereachpractice.

" Playersareexpectedtoattendeveryregularandpost-seasonpractice.Excusedabsences

willbegivenouttoplayerswhocontactCoachHafer(Varsity),CoachWilliams(JV)orCoachSpencerorCoachTaylor(Frosh-Team)24hoursinadvancewitharealisticreason.ContactingCoachWilliams,CoachSpencer,orCoachTaylorifyouareaVarsityplayerisunacceptable.Unrealisticreasonsaregoingtoanothersportingevent,goingtoagirlfriend’shouse,goingtotheweightroom,etc.Realisticreasonsaregroupprojects,studyhall,familyemergency,familyreunion,sick,etc.

" Playerswithexcusedabsencesareallowedtoplayinthenextgamebutwillnot“start”and

theirplayingtimehasthepossibilityofchangingduetothelackofpracticetimethatweek.Ifyoudonotattendpractices,youfallbehindinallareas(i.e.,skill,IQ,teamterminology,unity,etc.)

" Foreveryoneunexcusedabsence,thatplayerwillsitoutatleastthefirsthalfofthe

upcominggame.Ifaplayerhasmorethanthreeunexcusedabsencesintheseason,hewillbesuspendedalongwithgivenanactionplantogetbackontheteam.CommitmenttoteammatesandcoachesisoneofourtopprioritieshereatJHS.

There’snolimittowhatcanbeaccomplishedifnoonecareswhogetsthecredit.



ATTENDANCE" Attendanceatallgames,practices,meetings,conditioningsessions,andteameventsis

mandatory." Playersareexpectedtoarriveatleast15minutesearlytothestartofpractices,meetings,
