06The Autopsy Unit is a standalone building, built
from scratch, constructed to supply shortages that
the hospital had at pathology medical and scientific
support, including high risk interventions.
This building allows a totally isolated service from
the outside conditions.
The brick walls on the outside combined with the
sobriety of the facades, ensures better integration into
the surrounding green area and limits the impact of the
new built volume within the hospital complex.

07Increasing capacity and adjusting the Accident &
Emergency Department to work within the Manchester
protocol were the project’s main assumptions.
All the existing emergency facilities had to be
demolished to make way for the new unit.
A new building was built, with an updated
architectural language and a layout suitable for the
present requirements.

Scheme design of a new end-of the line unit, with
31.300m2, with the mission to provide specialized
research and treatments.
Located in Dely Brahim-Chéraga in Algiers, the bid
is based on the implementation of systems that ensure
the compliance of the defined principles, namely the
principle of rigor, the principle of efficiency and that of
wellness, while allowing a great flexibility and future
adaptability.
The metric and modular system adopted has
made possible the proposal of an optimised and cost-
controlled construction that nevertheless reflects
the leading edge technology nature that lies behind
an equipment of this nature with a coherent and
contemporary image where one recognises common
thread that integrates all the diversity of adopted
solutions.
We want that the National Institute of Cardiology
constitutes itself as A Place in the City.

Scheme design developed under the international
competition for the design of a new hemodialysis and
laboratory unit for the S. João General Hospital, Oporto,
Portugal.
The main concepts under the development of this
project were the integration of the expansion project in
the built environment, managing internal and external
circuits in order to provide adequate circulation for
staff, patients, caregivers, dirty/ clean material and
respond to the flexibility criteria needed for a Hospital
building.
The quality of the built space and the users welfare,
prioritizing aspects like the acoustic, thermal, visual
and indoor environment comfort was also one of the
main goals.

International public competition for the new
Espírito Santo Hospital in Évora with 68.000m2 of total
gross area.
The new facility, with 351 beds of which 43 belong to
intermediate and intensive care, will integrate a number
of medical specialties, such as Vascular Surgery, Neuro
Surgery and Oncology.
This new unit will be available to 150 thousand
patients of the Évora district and will also reach a
influence area of 440 thousand patients of all Alentejo
region.
Our project is defined by a group of distinct
buildings, related to different medical specialties,
connected by a single corridor. This configuration
allows different relationships between buildings and the
surrounding landscape, increasing solar orientation,
functional and flows seggregation and clarifies patient
wayfinding.
