LETTER FROM MSGR. ART

Dear Brothers and Sisters, I was more than a little amused by a comment by the Republican Presidential candidate, Mr. Donald Trump, regarding Pope Francis and his recent pastoral visit to Mexico. He stated, “I think the pope is a very political person.” One can easily surmise that he did not mean this in a positive way! The issue of politics and religion is inevitable in election years. This issue or critique is usually framed something like this, “Religion and religious leaders should stick to theology and leave politics to the politicians!” or, more succinctly, “The pulpit is no place for politics!” There is no question that the pulpit should never be used as the ‘bully’ pulpit for partisan political harangues from over zealous clerics. However, to conclude that the world of politics that can so powerfully impact the common good of our nation is devoid of ethical implications would be a profound disservice to both politics and the faith we so cherish. For Christians, it is the Good News of Jesus that orients not only what is ‘right’ and ‘wrong’ in our personal behavior but also what is ethically good, right and just in our corporate life in society. Jesus did not preach solely within the confines of religious questions disengaged from the everyday experiences of his people. Rather, his strongest messages were more often than not connected to our life with one another. There is probably no more powerful example of this than in the 25th chapter of St. Matthew when Jesus sets before his hearers the criteria for those who will ‘inherit the kingdom…from the foundation of the world.’ It will be for those who feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, welcome the stranger, cloth the naked, care for the ill and visit the imprisoned… For when one does this, they do it to Jesus Himself, present in the community of believers, within the social fabric of our lives with one another. It is not the role of the Church to determine the intricacies of how one political party or another works out the particulars of how the common good might be both served and achieved. It is, however, the role of religious leaders and, for that matter, every faithful Christian to insure that these questions remain in the forefront of the political dialogue that helps us to become a ‘more perfect union.’ In this election year, I encourage you to reflect on the marvelous statement that the Bishops of our country prepared some years ago that is updated each election cycle that presents for our consideration important principles regarding our role as Catholic Christians within the political process. PREGUNTA DE REFLEXION DE LA SEMANA

MENSAJE DE LA SEMANA: El domingo pasado se nos dio la “orden de salida”: iniciábamos la CUARESMA. Y nos poníamos en camino a la PASCUA. Y se nos proponía hacerlo siguiendo las huellas del mismo Jesús, puesto que también Él ha sentido la tentación de la duda, del cansancio, del poder, de “lo fácil”, del… Pero Él ha superado las tentaciones. Caminar con Él es una garantía para saber cómo superar esas situaciones. El camino seguido por Él fue éste: - “camino de disponibilidad ante el Padre”; - “camino de entrega y de generosidad” a la causa de Dios; - “camino de solidaridad” para con los hombres, sus hermanos. Este segundo domingo nos insiste en que es en el CONTACTO DIRECTO con Jesús donde es posible el cambio. Es necesario “ESCUCHARLE” (nos dirá el Evangelio), “dejarnos pillar” por su llamada, al estilo de Abrahán o los apóstoles (primera lectura y evangelio). Así nada nos podrá separar del amor de Cristo (segunda lectura). Bello mensaje el que este domingo nos ofrece. Si bien, también se nos dirá que el encuentro con Él conlleva la CRUZ: no hay resurrección sin Cruz y sin muerte; no hay gloria sin Pasión.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas, Quede más que un poco sorprendido por el comentario hecho por el candidato Presidencial Republicano, el Sr. Donald Trump, en relación con la visita pastoral a México del Papa Francisco. Él dijo, "creo que el papa es una persona muy política." ¡Uno puede conjeturar fácilmente que no quiso decir esto de una forma positiva! La cuestión de la política y la religión es inevitable en los años electorales. Este problema o crítica por lo general se enmarca algo como esto: "!La religión y los líderes religiosos deben atenerse a la teología y dejar la política a los políticos!" o, de forma más sucinta, "El púlpito no es un lugar para la política." No hay duda de que el púlpito nunca se debe usar como un púlpito de intimidación para arengas de política partidista por clérigos extremistas. Sin embargo, para llegar a la conclusión de que el mundo de la política que llega a impactar tan poderosamente el bien común de nuestra nación carezca de implicaciones éticas sería un profundo perjuicio tanto para la política como para nuestra fe que tanto apreciamos. Para los cristianos, es la Buena Nueva de Jesús, que orienta no sólo lo que esta ‘bien’ o ‘mal’ en nuestro comportamiento personal sino también lo que es éticamente bueno, correcto y justo de nuestra vida en sociedad. Jesús no predica únicamente dentro de los límites de las cuestiones religiosas desconectándose de las experiencias cotidianas de su pueblo. Por el contrario, sus mensajes más fuertes más a menudo que no fueron conectados con nuestra vida sociedad. Probablemente no hay ejemplo más poderoso que el que encontramos en el capítulo 25 de San Mateo cuando Jesús pone ante sus oyentes los criterios para los que "tomen posesión del reino… desde el principio del mundo." será para aquellos que alimentaron al hambriento, dieron de beber al sediento, acogieron al forastero, vistieron al desnudo, cuidaron del enfermo y visitaron al prisionero… Para cuando uno hace esto, lo hace para Jesús, presente en la comunidad de los creyentes, en el tejido social de nuestras vidas compartiendo el uno con el otro. No es el papel de la Iglesia determinar la complejidad del como un partido político o el otro trabajara los detalles de cómo servirá y lograra el bien común. Es, sin embargo, el papel de los líderes religiosos y por otra parte, de cada uno de los fieles cristianos asegurarse de que estas cuestiones permanezcan al frente del diálogo político para que ayuden a convertirnos en una "unión más perfecta". En este año de elecciones, les animo a reflexionar sobre la maravillosa declaración que los Obispos de nuestro país prepararon hace algunos años y que se actualiza cada ciclo electoral y presentan principios importantes de consideración con respecto a nuestro papel como Cristianos Católicos dentro del proceso político. Él nos invita a considerar los siguientes tópicos para nuestra conversión cuaresmal.

RECongress es la reunión anual más grande de su tipo en el mundo. El evento de cuatro días se lleva a cabo en el Centro de Convenciones de Anaheim (California) y es patrocinado por la Oficina de Educación Religiosa de Los Angeles. Inicio en 1968 como "Instituto" para profesores

de educación religiosa (CCD), RECongress ha crecido hasta incluir a personas de todas las vocaciones y reli-giones diferentes. El día anual de la Juventud, reúne a mas de 10,000 jóvenes del Sur de California y otras partes del mundo.
