Symbols of the Mass: Candles

Sometimeago, afewparishioners(inseparateinstances)remarkedasimilarobservationaboutthecurrentconfigurationofcandles on the altar. One said that it looks like I am behind bars while saying Mass at the altar. An interesting observation! The image is a deeply spiritual and realistic one that reached back to the earliest celebration of the Mass. Let’s think back to some of the letters thatSt.Pauldictatedwhileinprison.Paul,someoftheapostlesandearlybishop/martyrswereknowntoofferMassfromtheirprisoncellsorplacesofconfinement.Evenbehindbarstheywerestillvisibletothepeoplewhohadcometovisitthem,andthosevisitorswere putting their lives at risk by doing so. But then again, the Last Supper and the gathering of the Apostles after the Resurrection werecelebratedinconfinementandawayfromthepublicview.CelebratingMasswasriskybusiness, anditremainssoinvariouspartsof the world today. There are many areas throughout the globe where for some, attending and participating at Mass could mean the differencebetweenlifeanddeath.

In another conversation along the same topic, a parishioner remarked that the candles look less like prison bars and more like bars to the Gate of Heaven. I had pondered that image a long time ago in a moment of prayer, and it was a good reminder of somethingthatIhadforgotten.ThesacramentsoftheChurcharethegatewaytoeternallife,andthesignsandsymbols–whichcometousfromtheaccountsoftheOldandNewTestaments–aremeanttoenhanceoursensesanddeepenourfaith.Ienjoyedthe conversations I had with these parishioners about such matters. I cannot say there are times when I feel like I am behind bars orimprisoned, buttherearetimeswhenpreachingadifficulttopicorrunningtheriskoflosingpopularitycreepsin.Regardless, mystruggles are minor compared to what some priests have had to endure throughout the ages. And, I was not ordained to be popular. I was ordained to help people get into heaven.

HereiswhattheChurchsaysaboutCandlesontheAltar.AccordingtotheGIRM,#117:“thealtaristobecoveredwithatleastone white cloth. In addition, on or next to the altar are to be placed candlesticks with lighted candles: at least two in any celebration, or even four or six, especially for a Sunday Mass or a holy day of obligation. If the diocesan Bishop celebrates, then seven candles should be used.” According to the principle of progressive solemnity, two candles would be preferred for daily Mass, four or six for more solemn occasions, such as Sundays and Holy Days outside of Sunday. The candles used on the altar and for liturgical worship are to be made with beeswax.

Note: in a liturgical/religious setting, solemn does not mean sad! In this context, solemn means being marked by the invocationofareligioussanctionormarkedbytheobservanceofestablishedformorceremony, specifically:celebratedwithfullliturgical ceremony or awe-inspiring: sublime, solemn beauty. The observation about saying Mass behind bars included having limitedvisionorsightoftheelementsofthealtar.Therearetwothingstopointouthere:1.TheChurchinherworshipdesiresthatthe symbols and signs of the liturgy be clear and visible to the faithful. WEEKLY INSPIRATION

We only have so much psychological and spiritual energy. We easily get tired. Responding to life’s demands and people’s needs can really zap us of all of our energy. Anger, frustration, exhaustion, discouragement, helplessness, and evenapathycanrunwild.Wecanfindourselvesbitter and irritated by the fact that we have to do it all again. We need to rest, connect, and focus.

Deserted places, free of unnecessary distractions and demands, are great places of refreshment and we all need them. Desiring to be alone for abitandrestdoesnotindicateselfishness.Rather, it radiates wisdom. God is the source of all we do and the satisfaction of every human heart. If we are going to use the gifts God gave us well, then we have to make sure our batteries are recharged and replenished. Jesus invites us to go to a desert place to rest and pray.

Thank you to everyone that has contributed to the restoration of the Blessed Mother statue. After being stored in the garage, Bryan Hills from Hills Monument Studio, came to pick her up and move her to his work space for restoration. With lots of careful help, she was moved out of the garage and onto Bryan’s truck. We will keep you updated on the progress and we are all looking forward to the day she is moved to her new home in the cemetery!
