Business Update

The Advertiser Magazine

An opportunistic meeting with the Chief ExecutiveOfficer of Vodafone UK was instrumental in getting themobile phone signal re-instated from the mast at thenew Tesco site. Paul Brame, President of the FaringdonChamber of Commerce, was attending the launch eventof the Vale4Business initiative at Williams F1 where GuyLaurence, CEO of Vodafone UK, was a keynote speaker.Paul seized the chance to take Faringdon’s plight rightto the top of the organisation. This set in motion a chainof events that led to the mobile signal, which covers alarge part of the town including the centre, being re-instated within 48 hours of this meeting. The issue hadarisen due to the fact that the contractors clearing theformer JDS site, to pave the way for a new Tescosupermarket, had managed to cut through the fibre-optic cable thus rendering the mast useless and leavinghundreds of individual users and many businesses withno means of making or receiving calls or data. Paulcommented that following this chance meeting, “I wasnot expecting anything to happen quickly, but imaginemy delight when in my Inbox the next morning was ane-mail from the CEO himself saying that this was beingdealt with at the highest level” Whilst the mast is now back in action, there doesremain the question over what Tesco’s plans are for thisfacilitythere is a chance that the mast will be re-located or

even de-commissioned, which could adversely affectthe signal in the town. The Chamber of Commerce through treasurer, SarahAllen-Stevens, have used this contact with Vodafone toinitiate discussions of how the town may be serviced inthe future, for all networks. This being particularlyappropriate as the Vale4Business launch was focusingon ways of promoting business in the Vale of WhiteHorse, including the delivery of superfast broadbandand other services such as 4G.This pre-empts the topics for discussions at theforthcoming Faringdon Chamber of Commercemeeting with Tescos, scheduled for Monday 8th July atthe Faringdon Town Hall when representatives fromTescos will be present to answer questions about thenew store and their plans. Whilst attendance will berestricted to Chamber members, there will be a fewplaces available to others. If you are interested incoming to the meeting or even if you are justinterested in posing a question about Tesco’s plans, then please e-mail [email protected] forfurther details. The Faringdon Chamber of Commercemeets monthly on the second Monday in each monthat the Old Crown Coaching Inn from 6:30pm. Pleasecome along and make your views known. If we don’thear from you, then we don’t know what is on theminds of local businesses, so please do let us knowwhat the Chamber of Commerce may do for you.

Our Scottish island hopping takes us next to the Isle of Mull, which is certainly an island where the vagaries of theweather can hamper communication and transport (I gotstuck there for 2 days once – not that I’m complaining…)There is only one distillery on Mull and this is situated next tothe harbour in the pretty town of Tobermory. Ratherfittingly it was originally named Ledaig – which is the Gaelicfor ‘safe haven’.

Tobermory is one of Scotland’s oldest legal distilleries and isa charming place to visit. The site is very compact and theatmosphere laid back, to the extent that one ex-manager ofTobermory told me he had on several occasions foundvisitors wandering into his onsite living accommodationrather than the distillery! It’s verytraditional in style, with the mash tunhaving a beautiful copper lid, but itdoes have one point of difference inthat the lyne arms that carry thespirit vapour away from the pot stillare S-shaped and so some vapourre-condenses before leaving the stilland is re-distilled – resulting in alighter spirit.

Tobermory produces two distinctly different types of whisky. The first of these is an unpeated single malt that is light, dry, malty, nutty and fruity in style. The current range consists ofjust a 10 and a 15 year old. Of these, the 10 year old is mosttypical of the house style and it proved very popular with thegroup I visited with (particularly my Dad…). The 15 year oldis rather special as it is transferred to an Oloroso sherry caskfor the final part of it’s maturation and, although mainlymatured on the mainland, returns to its island roots for finalmaturation resulting in a rich and more coastal dram.

The other whisky produced at Tobermory is a peated stylethat goes under the old distillery name of Ledaig. This isperhaps more what you would expect from an island whiskyas along with it’s inherent fruitiness there is a distinct tarry, peaty, spiciness on both the nose and the palate but, surprisingly, also a definite sweetness. Currently, there isonly a 10 year old distillery bottling but we also have aGordon & Macphail bottling that is close to 19 years old andwas matured in re-fill sherry butts for a quite differenttasting experience.

Best KeptSecret

(Clifton Chronicles 3)Jeffrey Archerpublished March 2013

The exciting saga of the Cliftonand Barrington familiescontinues with this third volume...

1945 London: The vote in the House of Lords as to whoshould inherit the Barrington family fortune has ended ina tie. The Lord Chancellor's deciding vote will cast a longshadow on the lives of Harry Clifton and Giles Barrington. We find Harry, Emma and Giles all living in Barrington Hall.Harry returns to America to promote his latest novel, while Emma stays at home with their son Sebastian – whois a bit of a handful. Emma goes in search of the little girlwho was found abandoned in her father's office on thenight he was killed, as she and Harry have decided to try toadopt her. Giles becomes engaged to Virginia whichupsets the family applecart and the ensuing events causethe relationship to flounder. When the general election iscalled, Giles Barrington has to defend his seat in the Houseof Commons and is horrified to discover who theConservatives select to stand against him. But it isSebastian who ultimately influences his uncle's fate.In 1957, Sebastian wins a scholarship to Cambridge, and anew generation of the Clifton family enters the storyline. But after Sebastian is expelled from school, he unwittinglybecomes caught up in an international art fraud involvinga Rodin statue that is worth far more than the sum it raisesat auction. Does he become a millionaire? Does he go toCambridge? Is his life in danger? Best Kept Secret willanswer all these questions but, once again, pose so manymore.

Whatever else is said about Jeffrey Archer, it must beagreed he holds the reader's interest. Best Kept Secret isthe third in a series of five books - the first two being OnlyTime Will Tell and The Sins of the Father. The next two areyet to be written.I did hope that by the time I read this book I wouldn’t haveforgotten the events of the first two. However this thirdepisode refers back to the previous two with frequentreminders, which I did find helpful. Again the story wasfast moving with interweaving storylines that keep youneeding to know what happens next. Goodies andbaddies galore - plus intriguing plots. I thoroughlyenjoyed reading it although possibly I didn’t become asengrossed as with the first two. Jeffrey Archer keeps youwanting to read more and has cleverly set up theframework for the next in this series which is due to bepublished in March 2014 – I am looking forward to it already.

Summer can be a dangerous time for our bunnies if we are not vigilant withtheir care.Fly strike can be a killer in those warm midsummer months.

It occurs when flies lay their eggs where there is an available food sourcefor their larvae. This could be around your rabbits bottom if they are not

kept clean. Once the maggots hatch theybegin to eat everything around them inflicting pain and – if not attended to –fatal damage to your bunny.Happily there are simple things you can do to avoid this distressing condition.Check and clean your rabbit's bottom at least twice a dayKeep living quarters clean, cool and well ventilatedIf your rabbit seems quiet and listless contact your vetimmediately, even if you cannot see any maggots Ifyou do see maggots this is a genuine emergency andyour rabbit must be seen by a vet immediately.

Here at Danetree Vets we will be only too pleased to offer advice and discuss otherpreventative measures available.

Have a happy and healthy summer with your furry, big eared friends!

Reasons You Should Include StrengthTraining In Your Fitness Program

When people decide get fit, improve theirhealth or lose weight they often start bydoing cardiovascular training, either inthe form of running or cycling. Althoughthis is preferential to doing nothing theywill be missing out on a host of benefitsthat can be obtained through strengthtraining using either bodyweight, resistance machines or free weights.

Increased Resting MetabolismBy adding in strength training to your fitness programme you will bestimulating your muscles to a greater extent than through cardioalone and therefore increase your lean muscle mass - more so formen and not quite so much for women due to the differences inhormones. This increase in muscle raises your resting metabolic rateso that even when resting your body has to burn more calories thanbefore to maintain its current size. That's right, your body burnsmore calories while you're doing nothing and the more strengthtraining you do the more you'll burn!

Burn More Calories During and After TrainingSo you now know that your resting metabolism will increase throughstrength training. Did you know that by lifting weights you'll also beincreasing your metabolism for up to 38 hours after training? This isdue to a process called excess post exercise oxygen consumptionand it means that the recovery process from weights is much greaterthan that needed for cardio alone. So you'll be burning more caloriesand thus burning more fat!

Functional BenefitsThe functional benefits of weight training are vast. Stronger musclesprovide more support for joints, help improve posture and drasticallyreduce the risk of injury from everyday activities. For the elderly it canbe particularly beneficial as it can help slow both the natural atrophyof muscles as we age and also ward off osteoporosis by increasingbone density. To anyone participating in a sport it offers greatbenefits as there is a lot of carryover from strength into sport specificskills.

Physical BenefitsThe reason a lot of people take up weight training is to increase theirmuscular size and improve shape. Although you will only grow asignificant amount if you specifically eat and train to do so (so ladiesdon't worry about accidentally getting bulky), with a generalstrength program you will notice increased muscle tone, firmermuscles and more definition.

Health BenefitsBuilding muscle tissue increases the demand in the muscle forglucose, so that more glucose is pulled from the bloodstream: bloodsugars will not get too high thus reducing the risk of diabetes. It alsohelps reduce visceral fat (the fat that builds up around organs)further reducing the risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Many of the same benefits from cardiovascular exercise are alsoobtained through strength exercise such as an increase in lungcapacity and decrease in blood pressure and resting heart rate.

So next time you are in the gym consider lifting a few weights!

Wickedly Wonderful Wasps!………

This is now the time of theyear when people start toget ever so slightlyhysterical. The universalcry to be heard above allothers, as everyone getsup and runs away witharms flailing, isundoubtedly, "WASP!".Prepare yourself, wasps belong to the family Vespidae andat present there are 4,000 species known to us. I would liketo take this opportunity, whilst on my soapbox, to come tothe aid of the lowly wasp. Wasps ARE BENEFICIAL! They feedtheir grubs on protein. That means they catch insects, suchas flies and caterpillars  making great pest controllers in yourgardens. Wasps will also eat carrion and pollinate plants. They in turn feed others such as birds. There really is a pointto wasps other than the one on the end of their beautifulbodies. Wasps will sting it is true but this is in defence, andunlike a bee, an individual can sting many times. A bee stingis barbed and pulls the venom sack out of the bee as shepulls away. This tears her body and she dies as a result. Thewasp sting however, is not barbed, so it can easily beretracted. Please believe me when I tell you bees and waspsare out there just getting on with their short lives and notjust waiting to hunt you down! The sting itself is the femalesovipositor, or egg laying tube, that has evolved into adefence weapon. Living in a colony with only one preciousegg laying queen means there is no other use for theovipositors of the female workers. This is also why male beesand wasps can not sting. All too soon the frosts will be hereand the wasps will all die except for the newly mated youngQueens who will over winter ready for next year. If you doget a chance to see a wasp nest up close just take a goodlook at its construction. Built out of chewed up woodentirely by the female workers it is truly a marvel. Inside thecells are all perfect hexagons. Ponder also on the thoughtthat wasps have been making paper long before us humanseven learnt to write. That alone should give you respect forthe wonderful wasp!

A Zest For Lemons!A zest for lemons.I know that lemons are not grown here in our fair land butthey most certainly have been an integral part of our cookingfor hundreds of years. Brought over from the Azores inquantity around 1494 apparently, the lemon has wormed it'sway in to many sections of our cookery. Sweet or savoury itjust works with everything!I kind of hope that we may get some sunshine this year but ifnot, lemon will lift the spirits and tone of any recipe. It'sbright, vibrant flavour picks out many facets of other ingredi-ents and helps a recipe really come alive. Lemon is also highin vitamin c, high in dietary fibre and really low in calories. And boy, do they taste good, especially in a G&T!Even dishes that you wouldn't think of adding lemon tobenefit enormously. Pork roasted with lemon and thyme, cubes of lamb leg skewered with lemon wedges for thebarbie or big flat field mushrooms roasted with a lemonparsley butter. And of course lemon goes handsomely withfish. A huge wedge with any piece of fish on my plate is thelaw! Puddings too. Lemon zest grated in to shortbread, or areally easy lemon tart made with condensed milk and loadsof lemon juice poured over a crushed biscuit base. The chem-ical reaction of the acid with the dairy sets the condensedmilk enabling you to cut the tart. You could of course pile onbillowing meringue and bake until golden for a really easylemon meringue pie.But for today I thought we would turn our attention to somereally summery flavours and something a little radical, per-haps. Go and see the fish man on the market then make thisSouth American dish called ceviche. The lemon juice will

'cook' the fish leaving you with a glorious dish fit for any patio. For 4 people, take around 600g mixed fish. Things like salm-on, halibut, tuna and squid are great. Thinly slice and place into a bowl. Zest and juice 2 lemons and add to the fish thenstir carefully together along with a generous pinch of saltand a good grind of pepper. Peel and slice a red onion andfinely dice a fat red chilli - not a Birdseye or Thai chilli unlessyou love it hot - and add those to the fish. Leave to marinatefor about an hour. Lastly stir through 100g cooked prawnsand 4 tbsp chopped coriander then serve the ceviche on abed of cucumber sliced with a vegetable peeler in to ribbons.Hope you enjoy it, even if you do have to pretend there issunshine!

This Summer, ‘V’ is for Variety! We are spoilt with the abundance of choice of wines on the modernmarket; a huge variety of styles and flavours fit for every occasion! It alarms me however, that many of us (I am probably one of theworst culprits) fall into the typically of human behavioural patterns, whereby we simply stick to what we know.I recently posed this observation to John in Phillers when Ireluctantly decided to change my usual sandwich order (for afleeting moment…). Needless to say, I hastily reverted back to the

‘old faithful’ (The Tendulkar – YUM!), as it had been tried and testedand thoroughly enjoyed time and again. Is it the fear of investinginto the unknown that ties us to familiar territory, or is it the fear

of disappointment when it does not live up to ourexpectations?I propose a challenge: variety! Trying something new, with a focus on white wine (it is TRYING to be summerafter all)! Randomly selecting the letter ‘V’, a couple ofgrape varieties spring to mind – vermentino andViognier.Vermentino is commonly found throughout the lengthof Italy and is slowly gaining in recognition. It issuspected to have originated in Spain, migrating toItaly and beyond in the Middle Ages. It has mutated toan estimated 40 different versions, appearing in theLanguedoc-Roussillon, neighbouring Provence, whereit is known as rolle and in the far reaches of Australia.Vermentino offers aromas and flavours of citrus zest;lemons, along with some slight nuttiness. To me, themost appealing aspect of this wine is its crisp acidity

which leaves the palate refreshed. This characteristic allowsvermentino to match with a host of cuisines.Viognier, on the other hand has a more distinctive flavour andaroma profile; anything in the range from stone fruits; apricots, peaches to floral notes of honeysuckle and primroses. I enjoy themedium+ weight of some of these wines as many are likely to havebeen fermented or matured in oak. Oak adds secondarycharacteristics of vanilla, which when balanced can be reallyenjoyable.Viognier is most famous in the Rhone Valley, starring in the finewines of Condrieu, but also appears as far as California andAustralia. The aromatics of viognier makes it a great partner forThai food as well as seafood. So, take up the challenge and try some variety!Le Beau Chene Viognier 2012Languedoc, FranceAvailable @ Den Boer Wines £8.49

The Royal Oak

The Royal Oak is, as you would expect in this part of thecountryside, old and lost in time. You enter through the frontdoor into the large dining room, with the bar at the far end. There is ample room for about fifty five diners plus drinkers.Scrubbed tables with an assortment of chairs and benches,   avariety of ornaments and knickknacks everywhere with comical, quirky pictures and posters of animals and people decoratingthe room.We relaxed in the corner by a window, watching the comingsand goings of locals and visitors, all greeted with a smile and aword from one of the staff.Starting with a bowl  of Devilled veal kidneys and bacon in abrandy cream sauce with a sprinkling of chives, shared as astarter, very tasty and enough  to awaken the appetite. Our main courses followed, a large slice of Pork cider and applepie with new potatoes and freshly cooked vegetables, deliciouswas the verdict, we sampled each others. Tenderloin of pork, apricots and vegetables with a hint of   tarragon was anotherchoice, again compliments to the Chef. The Shin of beef servedin a red wine sauce with polenta and vegetables, well… it justfell apart at the touch of the fork, beautifully cooked...There was more to follow, after a short pause, while the bottleof Bousquet red was again passed around.English strawberry salad with iced raspberry mousse, was onechoice of dessert. It was lovely and refreshing.Lemon tart with a scoop of buffalo milk ice cream was anotherchoice. The sharp tang of lemon with the smooth ice creamwent together like a dream…Whether it be for a three course dinner  party or a pint and a sitdown, do not hesitate to go into the Royal Oak.Only  home grown organic produce is used  throughout the year, this includes lambs, pigs and cattle reared at the owners nearbyfarm. The staff were attentive, friendly and smiling.Thank you very much Tim Finny (manager and landlord)A definite recommendation!…..
