Hand Car Wash!……Small Cars-Wash & Dry …only £10.00

Electric bikes mean cycling for almost all…………Our youngest customer is just 14 and rides his Wisper Sport across the tank tracksof Salisbury plain to school and our oldest in his nineties and uses his to get to theshops…another commutes 35 miles a day to work and back on his…Being ableto maintain a constant speed of 15mph or more makes electric bikes an amazinglyversatile mode of transport and well worth the investment.

What is an electric bike, ebike, pedelec..? Very simply, bicycles that are fitted with a small electric motor inone of the wheels, a battery pack, a handlebar switch

for varying the speed and possibly a twist throttle (as per a motorcycle). You can ride all ebikes asyou would a standard pedal cycle however when you switch it on and continue to pedal the motorcomes in and propels you forwards making it much easier to pedal. It’s a bit like having a tailwindbehind you at all times. So you really can forget all that strain pedaling into headwinds and thesteepest of hills becomes effortless….You get the odd person who says it’s cheating but thesecomments are often from people who seldom get out of their cars….

With recent advances in battery technology typical distances on a single battery charge are now 30to 50 miles, costing under 10p for a re-charge. With no insurance, road tax, mot to payeconomically they also make sense. There are versions for shopping, commuting, touring, mountain biking you name it.

Why not get back on your bike for 2013 and enjoy the fresh air and freedom it gives you…… ?

Birdie Tales

(Bombycilla garrulus)This winter has witnessed large numbers of Waxwingsflooding into Britain from Scandinavia, usually seen in thenorth of the UK and on eastern coasts, they are venturingfurther inland in search of food.Large flocks of Waxwings known as “irruptions” swoop into feed on hedgerow hawthorns, rowan berries androsehips, 30 to 40 birds occurring in one place is mostcommon.Waxwings can turn up just about anywhere there areberry-bearing trees or shrubs, and that often means ourtown centre's and supermarket car parks. The capacity of Waxwings to strip berry bushes bare islegendary and as a result they are constantly on themove searching for fruit – so it is worthwhile regularlychecking out a local source of berries to spot them inaction. The birds, often described as dumpy, are about the sizeof Starlings, and have a distinctive crest. They are buffish-brown with a black bib, black and yellowtail feathers, and yellow, black, white and red wingfeathers. As well as the crest another distinctive featureis the mascara-like extension of the black bib aroundtheir eyes. The name ‘Waxwing’ comes from the red tips to the wingfeathers which resembles old-fashioned sealing wax.Another name is ‘Silktail’, presumably because of thebright colours on their tails.Despite their exotic almost tropical colouring, Waxwingflocks are frequently mistaken for Starlings, at least twicea week a group of around 20 or so call in just before darkinto a large tree across the road, and yes’ I thought theywere starlings!Often they are indifferent to human presence, allowingus time to observe them at close range.A good tip to entice them into your garden is to hangsmall pieces of chopped apple around your bird table, keep a good stock of apples though, they love them….

Last , I reflected upon one of my greatloves - bubbles, being anything from Champagne andProsecco through to a good quality Cava.As the season of love is again upon us, I feel it onlyappropriate to talk bubbles once again, with a focus onChampagne.Champagne is a sparkling wine produced in the Champagneregion, north east of Paris, France. The bubbles are producedwhen the base wine undergoes secondary fermentationwithin the bottle. After bottling the wine, fermentation yeastand a small amount of sugar are added to the bottle toinitiate secondary fermentation. Carbon dioxide, the by-product of fermentation becomes dissolved within the wine, creating the bubbles. The Champagne Appellation (regulations by whichChampagne producers abide in order to label their sparklingwine Champagne) has 7 permitted grape varieties; Pinot Noir,Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier, along with Pinot Gris, PinotBlanc, Petit Meslier and Arbane. The majority of Champagnesinclude a blend of the first two to three varieties listed.Non Vintage (NV) refers to the use of the fruit (in the form ofbase wine) from several different years and it accounts forsome 85% of Champagne produced. It is less expensive thanthat produced in a single vintage (single harvest).

Some more Champagne facts to win friends andinfluence others!

There are approximately 49 million bubbles in onebottle of Champagne (I spent 4 hours last nightcounting them all - not really!!) someone obviouslydid but was too embarrassed to own up to that one!

The pressure in a bottle of Champagne is 90 poundsper square inch, about three times of that in yourcar's tyre - or the same as that of a tyre on a doubleDecker bus!

A Champagne cork leaves the bottle at a velocity ofaround 38-40 mph, but can be as fast as 100 mph!

Legend has it that Marilyn Monroe once had a bathin Champagne. It supposedly took 350 bottles to fillthe bath tub. (Do try this at home!).

My favourite: By the law of averages, you are morelikely to be killed by a flying Champagne cork than bya poisonous spider!!

| The Advertiser | page 12 | Healthy TipsThe top five supplementations for optimal body

compositionThere are hundreds of supplements on the market today. All have differentproperties and uses and some are better than others. After years ofpractice, trial and error and endless research we recommend the top 5 tohelp get your body into a healthy state, which in turn will give you the bestchance of achieving your weight loss goals. Without improving health, long term weight loss will prove very difficult. So what are they?

Fish oils – Magnesium – Zinc – Vitamin D3 - ProbioticsWhy fish oils? - Taking fish oils on a regular basis is something very easyfor people to do. It raises serotonin, increasing mood, decreases feelingsof depression and anxiety and reduces carbohydrate cravings. The omega3 fatty acids contained in fish oils are a great stress fighter andsupplementation on a regular basis helps to reduce your production ofstress hormones. Scientists have also long suspected a link betweeninflammation and obesity-linked diabetes. Omega-3 fatty acids have areputation as potent anti-inflammatory agents.

TIP: Take fish oils to reduce inflammation to reduce weight.

Take magnesium to improve body composition – Magnesium isknown as the anti-stress mineral, it is involved in 300 essential biochemicalreactions in the body. It helps activate enzymes that control digestion, absorption, and the utilization of proteins, fats, and carbohydrates and isnecessary to allow insulin to steer glucose into cells. If there is not enoughmagnesium to do this job, both insulin and glucose become elevated. Theexcess glucose gets stored as fat and contributes to obesity. Magnesiumcan neutralize the effects of stress and reduce cortisol (the stresshormone) signals in the body that shutdown the metabolism and makeweight loss almost impossible.TIP: Magnesium improves digestion, reduces the effects of stresson your body and eliminates constipation. What is the importance of zinc? – There are lots of benefits of takingzinc, from improved performance and strength to lowering cholesteroland inflammation. Symptoms of low zinc can be cravings for salty or sweetfoods. Additional zinc in the diet is believed to help control appetite andaid weight loss. Low zinc levels may even impair your ability to exercise, animportant part of any weight loss program.TIP: Zinc reduces unhealthy food cravings.Does vitamin D3 make a difference? – Yes it does: An adequate levelof vitamin D is known to help with blood sugar regulation, increase insulinproduction and reduce insulin resistance. Several studies suggest there isa link between low levels of vitamin D and basic cognitive functions anddepression, which is important when mood affects your ability to stick toa weight loss plan. With the right amounts of vitamin D you will be morelikely to be in the mood for exercise. Your body also needs vitamin D forleptin production which is the hormone that tells your brain that you’re full.If you feel full you are less likely to overeat.TIP: Vitamin D3 improves your blood sugar regulationWhat do probiotics do? - Good quality probiotics play an important partin gut health. They directly affect nutrient absorption and lower chronicinflammation. If your gut is unhealthy, you will be more susceptible tostress and anxiety, which can lead to the release of stress hormones, suchas cortisol. Studies have shown that stressful events trigger cortisol andlead to the onset of chronic gastrointestinal disturbances. Stomachproblems and elevated cortisol directly affect insulin health and lead tobelly fat gain. Taking a probiotic can lower cortisol levels because itimproves gut flora that affects the brain. There is an established linkbetween stress, mood disorders, brain function and gastrointestinaldisease.

TIP: Get the most from your food and reduce gut irritation bytaking probiotics.

little invertebrates.Sadly, they generally get bad press on account of the unfortunate habits of a very few. We have fossils of them thatare 350 million years old and they have changed very little in design since. The old adage of 'if its not broken- don't fixit' comes to mind. A true survivor of several mass extinctions, they are still going strong around the world today.  Sofar we have identified 4,500 species and expect there are many more yet to be discovered. Some species are trulyremarkable reproducers. A single female German Cockroach can live for 6 months and produce around 20,000offspring in that time.  Now I do not want to frighten you here, so let us put everything inproportion. Less than 30 species world wide are considered pests toman so remember, that actually leaves a huge number who aren't, infact only 4 imported species are classified as a problem in the UK.  Around the world literally billions of cockroaches are busy recyclingorganic waste right now and some are even pollinators. They keep amassive amount of individual ecosystems healthy and are a hugelyimportant source of food for loads of other vertebrate and invertebratespecies.Historically cockroaches were ground up into a powder or boiled as atea then offered as 'cure all' medicines. Today instead,  you can pick upa tasty protein snack of fried cockroach in countries such as Cambodia. Contrary to popular myth, they can not survivea nuclear impact but they can tolerate a massively high level of radiation. Some can survive without eating for up to6 weeks, some can even hold their breath for 40 minutes living a semi-aquatic life and yes, they can survive for over1 whole week after being decapitated! They are fast too,  a sprint of 80cms per second has even been recorded.

Love them or loath them, they are here to stay!

Clare Balding’s prize winningautobiography covers the first twenty or soyears of her life. It describes her growing upsurrounded by dogs, horses and an eccentric family. Eachchapter is named after an animal that was significant to herand her family at that particular time in her life.To use her own words: “I had spent most of my childhoodthinking I was a dog and I suspect I had aged in dog years. Bythe time that I was ten I had discovered the pain ofunbearable loss. I had felt joy and jealousy. Most importantof all I knew how to love and let myself be loved. All thesethings I learnt through animals. Horses and dogs were myfamily and my friends. This is their story as much as it is mine.”Her school life was fun at times, traumatic and surprising atother times. She relates the difficulties of fitting in andchoosing friends, making mistakes and putting things rightagain. A few surprises for the reader here, and a few chuckles.Clare’s father was a very successful race horse trainer untilhis retirement, and as a result she grew up to be anoutstanding horsewoman. At the age of two she is picturedon top of the Grand National winner Mill Reef. Sheeventually became a top amateur jockey herself, winningmany races.Clare Balding has been a familiar name to most of us forsome years and is in fact often now referred to as a NationalTreasure. This, in my opinion, is thanks to her hard work, enthusiasm and the ability to entertain as well ascommentate. She has been a presenter on radio and onmany television programs. Her commentaries on the recentLondon Olympics were excellent and have made her ahousehold name – they were enjoyable and informativewhichever sport she was covering. She co-invented the Mo-bot, and who will ever forget seeing her introduce Bert tothe nation – Unbelievable!!!!My Animals and Other Family is funny, frank, surprising andinteresting. The reader does not need to be horsey or be adog lover to enjoy this memoir; it is simply a pleasure to read.I am sure there is much more to be told and I hope Clarefollows up with a continuation very soon.Happy Reading.....................

Winter redsJanuary, and February too, are funny monthsaren't they? There's kind of not much going onand the weather will most likely be keeping usfeeling a bit miserable, in hope of signs of springand perhaps a little sunshine. Maybe the littlepromise of spring bulbs peeping through thedark soil and some over winter vegetables mayalso be nearly ready for the taking.Food needs to be warming and comforting tooalthough after the indulgence of Christmaspeople are often thinking of being careful. Butalso wanting something to eat as a bit of a treat. And with celebration dates like Valentines, letsthink of something a little bit special!I was supping some mulled wine overChristmas and I had a thought it would be lovelyas a pudding, so here goes!To make a mulled wine jelly pour a whole bottleof red wine in to a pan. Plump for a good fullbodied one. Add the juice and zest from anorange, 1 cinnamon stick, 10 cloves and 200gsoft light brown sugar. Split a vanilla pod, scraping out the seeds and add both to the winetoo. Warm the wine then turn it off and leave toinfuse for about 30 minutes. Meanwhile, soak 7leaves of gelatine in cold water until soft. Pleasedon't ask me about powdered gelatine, I cannever get on with it and don't understand it atall!!! Warm the wine up again then drop in thegelatine. It will dissolve easily but make sureyou give it a little stir anyway! Cool then pour into wine glasses and chill until set. This will bearound 6 hours but is much better over night!Whip 300ml cream, adding 50g icing sugar oncethick and around 2 tbsp of your favourite liqueurthen spoon on to the top of the jellies to serve.

| The Advertiser | page 19 |Lets Talk about Whisky

There are thousands of expressions of malt whiskiesavailable and they all taste different. One of the elementsthat has an influence is the type and quality of the barleyused and, some would say, the ‘terroir’ it is grown in. Thiswill subtly affect the production process (such as theamount of sugar available to ferment, how the estersform etc) and lead to the creation of different flavoursand aromas.

For many years Golden Promise was the distillers barleyof choice but varieties such as Optic are now far morewidely used that, amongst other benefits, yield morespirit. Despite this, some distilleries continue to useGolden Promise as they believe that it gives more bodyand complexity to the spirit. Both Macallan andGlengoyne use a proportion of it to make their whisky(although the Glengoyne distillery manager would notdivulge to me the exact proportion…) and Benromachdistillery produced a batch of whisky made entirely fromGolden Promise and, helpfully, also produced a batchmade entirely from Optic barley. We stock both of thesewhiskies and they would make for an interesting

‘compare and contrast’ tasting.

There is also a growing movement in whisky distillingtowards the use of both organic and locally grown barley. These involve additional costs as local growing conditionscan be very difficult. and organic whisky productionrequires stringent pre-cleaning of the equipment, but thedistilleries obviously feel that the characteristics broughtto the whisky make this worthwhile.

Jim McEwan of Bruichladdich speaks of the clean, puretaste of their Islay Barley 2006 (where the barley comesfrom a single farm on Islay), and I can certainly concurthat there is a freshness to both the nose and palate thatis quite delightful. Interestingly, Bruichladdich alsoproduce an organic single malt and I find this to have acreaminess to both the nose and the mouth feel that I’venot found in other whiskies, so again the subtle way inwhich the barley acts and reacts within the productionprocess seems to be leading to a different type of spirit.Give them a try and see what you think!

| The Advertiser | page 21 | Talk to the Vet!

Graham Pursey 01367 242 777

Happy St. Valentines day to you all! Whilst we all enjoy indulging and spoiling our loved ones during February, lets notforget our pets, who also have hearts that need looking after.

Various breeds of dogs and cats are prone to certain diseases of the heart, most of which, if detected early, can be successfullytreated. Unlike skin or gastric conditions where the symptoms are easily identified at home, heart disease is not somethinga pet owner can easily see. Often heart problems will only be identified at your vet when the vet listens to your pet’s heartduring an examination. A routine health check should always precede administration of the regular vaccination (“booster”).This is another reason why the annual injections are very important! The symptoms you may notice at home with heartdisease could include breathlessness, reduced energy, coughing or wheezing, and a swollen belly, which, if seen, may warranta check up with the vet.Diseases of the heart can include problems with the muscle of the heart, the valves within the heart and with the electricalconduction system that controls the way the heart beats. Some diseases are present from birth, and others can develop laterin life. A vet may hear a ‘heart murmur’ in a young puppy or kitten, which could indicate an early heart defect. This is notnecessarily bad news as sometimes these correct as the pet gets older. Whether detected early or late in life, your vet maywant to investigate the cause of the murmur. This is to ensure that correct treatment can be initiated at the earliestopportunity. Investigations may include X-rays, blood tests, ultrasound scans of the heart and ECGs, which check the rhythmof the heart.

Many of the heart conditions can be treated with medications that help the heart work more efficiently. In very rare cases,an operation may also be needed. The medications are very similar to tablets human heart patients would take. Oncediagnosed, regular checks with the vet will help ensure the treatment is successfully managing the heart condition and willallow for any appropriate changes to the medication to be made. Investigations and treatment into heart disease is coveredon your pet insurance.

Obesity in pets, as much as in people, can put pressure on an otherwise healthy heart, which may lead to heart failure. Fatcan build up around heart and lungs. This will cause the heart to work much harder. It is important to keep your pet’s weightat the ideal for his/her breed and age. If your pet gains too much weight, speak to your vet about how to reduce the weightsafely.

If you have any worries about heart problems, or weight gain, in your pet, please make an appointment to see your vet for acheck-up. Wishing you and your pets, a happy and healthy heart!

It looks as though the winter is going to hang on for anothercouple of months – so if you are planning to go away for aweek or two, or even a few days:

Beware of lowering the heating too much. It may save onthe heating bill, but is it worth the risk of a frozen pipe?Leave your central heating on low at around 15°C toprevent pipes from freezing.

An alternative solution, particularly in the event ofextended absence from your home, is to drain theplumbing system entirely. Seek professional adviceshould you consider this appropriate.

Ensure that pipes in unheated areas like lofts and, whereaccessible, under floor spaces are insulated with goodquality lagging.

Water tanks in lofts should also be insulated, but avoidinsulating under the tank as heat from the house will helpprevent it from freezing.

Have someone keep an eye on your home, and ensurethey know where the stopcock is should they find a leak!

Home improvements in the pipeline? If you are planning any DIY, consider the following; Avoid drilling or hammering nails into pipes by using a

pipe detection device; you can’t always predict wherepipes are located!

Try to source all plumbing materials from the samesupplier (particularly when working with plasticplumbing) to avoid inherent gaps in joints and fittings.

If working in a ‘water zone’ area, such as a shower tray, make seals and joints as watertight and sturdy as possible.

Discovered a frozen pipe?If you act fast, a frozen pipe does not always mean a burstpipe; Turn off the stopcock. Remove any furniture or equipment from the area which

may get damaged by melting ice and water. Open the tap closest to the area, and begin gently

warming the pipe with a hairdryer or hot water bottle, starting from the end closest to the tap and workingaway from it.

Remember, although damage to pipes occurs when theyfreeze, bursts only become apparent when the pipebegins to thaw.

Sprung a leak? Turn off the stopcock and drain the system by opening

taps in baths and sinks. Seek professional assistance in accordance with your

broker’s guidelines.
