WoW, summer is here! With the rainy season upon us, we dodge raindrops to get out on our boats whenever we can. Beer can races and sunset cruises have been canceled due to weather. We did have a nice sunset cruise Saturday, June 17, with light winds for us sailors, and calm seas for all. Watch for notices for the sunset cruises and come join in. It is a casual outing intended to get us out on our boats and ending up back at the Tiki Bar to socialize and enjoy our club.

Father’s Day brought out a large group of families to celebrate our Dads. Awesome hot dogs, and we kept Gage and crew busy serving up food and drinks.

Overall, the clubhouse and property are looking good. Vice Commodore Heimensen has a project in the works to renovate the boater’s restrooms and the dry-dock. This area has been neglected for some time and by the end of summer, things should be looking much better downstairs.

I hope everyone enjoys the summer, whether you stay in town or get out of town and away from the heat.

As always, Nancy and I will see you around the club.

do You liKe To raCe? If so, consider the E-Scows at the Clearwater Community Sailing Center. The CCSC has recently obtained 4 E-Scow racing boats and they have a team who have thrown down the gaunt-let to challenge all CYC members who want to partici-pate in match racing.

E-Scows are a twin centerboard fractional sloop with an LOA of 28 feet, a beam of 6.75 feet and a draft of 3.75 feet. These are high performance planing hulls built by Melges Performance Sailboats. If you would like to join in the FUN, contact CCSC at (727) 517-7776 for further details.

Be sure to check out the NEW and IMPROVED CYC Regatta Schedule for the upcoming season:

The WaTerside meeting took place on Wednesday, May 31 and the fol-lowing efforts continued in the CYC Marina:

Club boat maintenance: four prams had fiberglass repair and the trailer is getting new raised LED lights

Dock maintenance: Dan and Linda have installed LED bulb replacements on all the pedestal lights on “C” dock and will continue to replace all the lights in the marina

Floating Dock: divers cleaned the floating dock to re-duce the bend

Budget review: plan painting new, waterborne and re-maining pilings and the pedestals once lights are replaced

We have completed a review of area slip fees at other yacht clubs and marinas and are tabling any actions pend-ing Long Term Planning Committee efforts and recommen-dations. The next Waterside meeting will take place on Wednesday, July 26th at 6 p.m.

We are now in hurricane season (1 June—30 November). All boat owners should check their lines, anchors and emer-gency equipment this time of year, and update your hurri-cane plan and “boat buddy” arrangements.

Slip holders: please ensure a current copy of your insur-ance is on file with Michelle in the office. And check out a full list of hurricane tips for boat owners on page 4 of this issue.

We are continuing with CYC Sunset Cruises about once a month. The fifth in the series will be on Saturday, July 29. Skippers will get underway from the CYC marina about 7 p.m. We invite both power and sailboats planning for sunset (8:23 p.m. that day), with a post-sunset, informal no-host gathering at the Tiki. We will send out more infor-mation by constant contact and e-mail; skippers please let Gerard at [email protected] and me (info below) know if you plan to cruise or if you want more information.Nautical Trivia of the Month: The answer to last month’s trivia contest was “ketch”, as a two-masted, fore-and-aft-rigged sailboat with a mizzenmast stepped forward of the rudder and smaller than the foremast. Pat Dowling, our fearless CYC Book Club leader with excellent timing, was my third correct answer, so I owe her a Dark N Stormy next Book Club meeting. For this month, what is the name for a concentrated column of sinking air coming down from a thunderstorm and spreading out in all directions when it reaches the surface, generating winds of up to 120 knots? Text or e-mail the correct answer to me; the fourth correct answer will get a drink on my account at the Tiki.

I can be reached at my NEW e-mail address [email protected] or on my cell phone by text or voice at 727-641-8633.

From Pinellas County’s all Hazard Guide

No matter how seaworthy you or your boat is, don’t ever consider staying with your boat in a hurricane. Make preparations early and evacuate for your safety. Monitor weather and sea condi-tions closely. If watches or warnings are issued, don’t venture onto the water. Follow the tips below to minimize damage to your vessel during a hurricane:

PrePare Your BoaT• Create a hurricane plan for your boat and file a copy with the marina operator. • Take a photographic inventory of your boat and its contents. • Purchase and stow mooring line for storms – line should be about twice the diameter of normal line. • When a storm is approaching, remove loose items on the deck – bimini tops, dinghies, etc. – and store them on land. Shut off fuel lines at the tank. • Keep batteries charged; make sure bilge pumps are oper-ating properly. • Keep insurance up-to-date AND IF YOU HAVE A SLIP IN CYC’S MARINA, BE SURE A COPY OF YOUR Boat INSURANCE IS ON FILE IN THE OFFICE.

hiGh and drY • Store boat and trailer in a secure covered building, such as a garage. • If left outside, secure using ground hooks and straps. • Fill boat partially with water for stability. Keep water away from engine/batteries. • Put wooden blocks between trailer frame and springs for extra support with added weight.

moored aT doCK • Secure hatches and doors. • Double up on mooring lines and spring lines to secure boat in its mooring. • Use several cleats to distribute the load on the boat.• Allow extra line for tide and storm surge. • Use chafing gear, such as reinforced radiator hose where lines will rub for protection – several feet on each side. • Disconnect electric, water and other dock connections. • Remove valuables.

anChored • Anchor on the lee side of protective land rather than mooring to a dock. • Use two anchors and no stern anchor. • Line length should be six to nine times water depth for storm surge shift. • Remember the boat’s position may change drastically during the storm.

Lastly… batten down the hatches! For more information and the full All Hazards Preparedness

Guide, visit www.pinellascounty.org/emergency.

Hurricane plans for boats

Don’t let this be your boat.

During the approach of a hurri-cane, Pinellas County’s 10 bascule bridges – or drawbridges – will operate in a modified mode to give preference to evacuating vehicle traffic until the bridges go into lock-down position to ensure barrier islands are evacuated and to protect the bridges from wind damage. The U.S. Coast Guard will coordinate with local and state

agencies to issue a special marine advisory when the bascule bridge operations will be modified. NOAA weather radios, local media and

BRIDGES IN A STORM

marine broadcasts will announce these changes.

summer sailinG CamP 2017 began on Monday, June 12, and we are looking forward to our best summer youth sailing program ever! Parents and kids are motivated and our outstanding volunteers are well prepared to ensure a safe and fun time for our campers and staff.

Youth Sailing programs are a foundation of Yacht Club tradition and very often the “feeder program” for a growing membership roster. Please make an effort to visit with kids and parents during summer camp, and most especially to attend a graduation ceremony. Your presence and encouragement are very important and, therefore, I have posted our summer schedule again.

Till then, may you be blessed with good health and the love of family and friends. Father Bob: [email protected] (727) 510.6153

Who are The Gulls? How many times have you heard “The Gulls are the

little old grey-haired ladies that knit”? I’d like to take a few moments and respond to this statement.

LITTLE: For those of you that don’t know me I am almost 6 feet tall. That does not constitute little.

OLD: Old is only a state of mind. I know there are no old Gulls and I’m pretty sure there are no old mem-bers at CYC.

gREY hAIRED: OK, so some of us do have grey hair. (Key word being some not all.) But I can assure you I worked hard for every one on my head.

KNIT: Again some but not all of us knit. But knitting is not all that we do.

Clearwater Yacht Club

has been supporting our community and various charities for over 100 years. The Gulls also strive to support the club, our com-munity and charitable organizations. Just last month we donated lap robes and knit cancer hats to veterans in memory of Dennis Reardon. Susie Reardon picked up 12 handmade lap robes and 12 hand knit cancer hats to be delivered to local area VA hospitals. In the past, our hats and lap robes have been delivered to Bay Pines VA Healthcare System in St. Petersburg, Florida and Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland.

May also saw a dozen cancer hats and 10 baby hats delivered to Morton Plant Hospital.

The Gulls have supported CYC/Arc Fun Day for many years and we were pleased to be able to help again this year. As in the past, we filled out the name tags for the clients and staff attending. We also folded over 300 T-shirts to be handed out that day. Just a note, when we stated doing name tags there were approximately two dozen, this year there were over 300. Obviously, this club function is very successful.

The house and Grounds committee has been busy with many projects. We completed the fence around the dumpsters on the east corner of the property to give a better first impression when driving in the east driveway, and it turned out beautifully!

We continue to get great feedback from mem-bers on the dining comment cards available to you every time you get a chit from your server. Many members have commented on the improved service and food temperature at the Tiki Bar on the weekends, as we have added staff to better serve the membership.

The next project we are working on is remodel-ing the dry dock restrooms and showers. We are in the process of getting approvals and permits for the project. Todd Crosbie and PC Tim Roberts are leading the charge on the project. We have many projects in progress that we will be sharing with you in the coming months as we get more details worked out.

As we look forward to the rest of 2017, we are orga-nizing a list of proposed projects to improve the Club. We would love your input on ideas to improve the facility and the operations. The committee will be meeting on Tuesday, July 11 at 6:30 p.m. in the board room. Please join us for a short (I promise) meeting and then stay for dinner!

See you at the Club!

Having Funon the Dry Dock

You know it’s a small world when CYC members visiting Cuba run into other CYC members doing the same thing. That’s what happened in May when Jim and Sandee Pfister (far right), were on a tour and found themselves face-to-face with PC Tim and Terry Roberts (far left) and Mary Kay and Michael Delk (center), who were in town for the Havana Yacht Club’s 25th anniversary.

Father Bob Wagenseil (right), who has run the successful youth sailing program at CYC for many years, is giving the helm to longtime volunteer Ned Covel (left). Rogers Howard (center) will continue being a big help now that Fr. Bob and wife Patricia are selling their Catalina 35 and moving to Crystal River. Fr. Bob will continue to help out with the youth sailing group he founded – officially called the Indian Rocks Family Sailing Association – and will remain CYC’s Fleet Chaplain.
