JULY 2019
Term two has certainly been a busy term in which Burnside State High School has really shone. Term 3 is fast approaching and is an important time
for our Year 12 students as they enter the final stages of their schooling years. I wish them well in their last six months of schooling.
The end of Term 2 also sees the school say a sad farewell to nine of our
wonderful International students. Although it will be sad to say goodbye we know that they will remain a big part of the Burnside family and we are sure
the many friendships they have forged will continue for years to come. Farewell to Julie, Una, Gianna, Auphelie, Clara, Phoebe, Henrike and Alisa.
The start of Term 3 will see the school welcome our newest intake of International students:
Alessandra Maio - Italy Malte Peter Reuen - Germany
Martina Kesslova - Czech Republic Luiza Franzoso Martinez - Brazil
Monserrat Martinez Albanez—Chile Lia Manghi - Italy
Elle Marie Young - USA Isabell Schloegl - Germany
Study tours from Korea, China and Japan will arrive in Term 3. The school
also hosted students and teachers from our Indian sister school Rishikul
which was an amazing experience for our Burnside students and host
families and also the students and staff from Rishikul.
The school has also re-signed our sister school partnership for the next five years. This is a landmark signing,
with Burnside State High School being the only school in Queensland with a sister school in India.
The support we have received for our International Program from within the
school community has been fantastic. If there are any families who would be interested in hosting a student please make contact with Kylie Postan, our
Homestay co-ordinator.
We have also started our transition program for Year 6 students and advise any parents with a child currently in Year 6 to ensure you hand your
enrolment in as soon as possible. This allows the school to monitor our numbers and oversee the approval of our out of catchment enrolments. Deputy Principal of the Junior School, Ms Allsopp, will be visiting most
primary schools to hand out information about enrolments for 2020.
Burnside State High School has been enrolment managed so there is a process in place if you wish to apply for out of catchment enrolment. If you
know of any families who may have their first child attending Burnside SHS in 2020 we are more than happy to give them a tour of the school and a one
on one information session if they wish. Families are welcome to make contact with the school to organise individual tours.
We also start the process of subject selection for 2020 for our students in
Year 7 to 11. The Subject Expo is held on the 24 July in the Student Centre and further advice around the program will come out closer to that time.
I also take this opportunity to thank all the students who entered either
art work or food items into the Nambour Agricultural Show. Many
students walked away with awards. Thank you to the wonderful
students from Burnside who assisted in serving meals at the opening
ceremony supper. I was one very proud Principal enjoying the nibbles
and refreshments!
It is certainly going to be a very busy term and projected enrolments for
2020 are looking at being over 870 students which is fantastic news. We also will have approximately two extra teachers on staff next year. This
demonstrates the great confidence the community on the Sunshine Coast has in Burnside State High School. I hope you all had a safe and restful
holiday and look forward to working with you all in Term 3.
Regards

Relay for Life
On the weekend of May 18/19, Burnside’s team captained by Heather Van Gemeren braved the elements to participate in Relay for Life, an event raising money for the Cancer Council of Queensland. Heather was joined by teachers Carly Reilly and Kay Taylor and fellow team members, Caleb Kimmings, Katelyn Bertram, Orion Matthews, Lily Van Gemeren, Tom Prior, Jack Drury and Tane Powell. For part of the time we were joined by Matthew Noll and
former student Jamie Noll. Held at the Kawana Sports Fields overnight on the Saturday, the relay involved walking for 18 hours (from 2pm until 8am) in honour and memory of those fighting, and who have fought, cancer.
The most poignant part of the night was the Candlelight Vigil, where those lost to cancer were remembered. Walking on wet grass in a chilly breeze certainly tested the fortitude and resilience of the participants, but an amazing amount of money was raised for this worthy charity to continue their valuable work. Well done to all involved – you did our school proud!
Non-Uniform Day
In the lead up to Relay for Life, a non-uniform day was held at school to further raise funds. To make this more interesting, a beanie competition was
held, as beanies are a symbol of the fight against brain cancer. Students wore an impressive array of headwear and the competition was tight, before Tane Powell emerged victorious. Thanks to everyone who supported our fundraising efforts and more than $600 was raised in support of our Relay for Life team. Calling 2020 Student Leaders!
On Wednesday 17 July, during the first week of Term 3, a number of Year 11 students have volunteered to come to school to take part in a YLead workshop on leadership, the first step in building Burnside’s 2020 student leadership team.
The workshop will focus on both personal development and goal setting for 2020 and at its conclusion, students will be asked to nominate for leadership positions, which include School Captains and Vice-Captains, Student Representative Council President and Secretary as well as committee chairpersons.
Students who have nominated for the workshop are asked to report to the Conference Centre at the beginning of early start, finishing the day at 1.30. If
any Year 11 student has not as yet given their name to Mrs Taylor, there is still time to do so. We wish to encourage as many students as possible to experience the many benefits from attending this important workshop. Photo Left: Year 11 SRC representatives, Emily Fuller, Matthew Noll, John Leverett and Olivia Hastie looking forward to Wednesday 17 July.
YLead Success
Year 12 student Tane Powell achieved for the senior leadership team with his video, Burnside’s entry in YLead’s Project Action which was recognised with their Innovation Award.
Well done Tane and the team! Thank you Jack Drury for the excellent narration and contribution. Photo left : Jack Drury and Tane Powell with their award.
FLU SEASON
Influenza A is a highly contagious virus. The flu season occurs annually in QLD
between May and October. This flu typically occurs with a sudden onset of symptoms,
common signs are coughing, runny nose, sneezing sore throat, fever, headache,
fatigue, chills and body aches. In order to ensure a safe and healthy workplace for all
students and staff, we ask that parents be vigilant in observation of their student’s
health. If the condition presents itself, medical advice should be sought and the
appropriate treatment commenced. Children may return to school on the advice of a
medical practitioner. Thank you for your support in this matter.

AIR BORNE CHEMICALS- AEROSOL BAN
Some members of the Burnside State High School community suffer severe allergies to
aerosol sprays or perfumes that can act as a trigger to an (often) serious asthma
attack, or bring on a severe migraine. The allergy can be sufficiently serious to put one
of our students into anaphylactic shock if an aerosol or perfume has been sprayed
anywhere in the student's vicinity. This can be a life threatening situation, resulting in
the student’s airways closing and the student having to be transported to hospital in
an ambulance. • Aerosols are banned from school premises, excursions, sporting
events and all events where students are in confined spaces. To provide the safest
environment, students are banned from bringing aerosol sprays and perfume pump-
packs to Burnside State High School. This includes for any excursions, camps or other
onsite or offsite activities. Risk management strategies will be in place for any aerosol
sprays used as part of the curriculum and school business. Aerosol sprays or perfume
pump-packs brought to school by students will be confiscated and disposed of.
Breaches of this policy will result in disciplinary action. Remember: No student is to use
or bring aerosol deodorants or sprays to school. Roll-on and stick deodorants are
permitted at school. Thank you for considering the health and safety of others.

UNIFORM GUIDE
Burnside State High School is a progressive and socially responsible school maximising
student learning outcomes and preparing young people to become active citizens in a global
society. Burnside State High School is a uniform school because the Parents and Citizens
Association, representing the parents of the school, has decided to support the wearing of a
school uniform.
The Minister for Education has stated that the advantages of wearing school uniforms include
“developing a sense of belonging to a group, pride in membership of that group and
identification of students to and from school”. Research has also shown that there is a clear
link between dress standards, school discipline, school spirit and community perceptions of
the school in general.
It is our policy that the correct school uniform is worn each day and we urge all parents to
support the accepted standard of dress as detailed in this brochure. The Burnside State High
School uniform can only be purchased from the school uniform shop.

coloured soles are permitted. No boots or high tops of any type are permitted.

ALTITUDE DAY
This term a group of Year 9 students were chosen to represent Burnside State High School at YLead’s annual Altitude Day. Well done to the students who attended!
DLH NEWS
SAVE THE DATE! We need your vote! Voting period June 20 to July 3
Our Year 9 and 10 Alternate Science Garden program would love your support. The students have entered into Focus on Ability Short Film Festival and we would like our families support by voting on our documentary in the school documentary section. Below is the instructions and link to vote, students are excited about this and it is great for our school showing the diversity of learning experiences at Burnside High.
The films will be available for viewing and voting on June 20 via our website www.focusonability.com.au from 10am. The voting will then remain open until July 3rd. In some years the difference between winning and 2nd has been under 5 votes so every vote certainly counts.
People can only vote once per category and those categories are:
International Documentary - International Short Film
Open Documentary - Open Short Film
School Documentary - School Short Film
When your film is on our website, under your film will be a vote now button. People simply click on the button and enter their details. All votes must be verified to count. That means everyone who votes will be sent an email with a verification link, they then simply verify via that link. This means people cannot cheat and put in fake email addresses. To incentivise voting, we are giving away daily a $50iTunes voucher to random voters.
STEMM NEWS STEMM students recently participated in the 'Seeds of Resistance' activities at Nambour Community Centre for domestic and family violence prevention month. They made 'Seats of Resistance' using recycled craft materials and proudly delivered one of the seats to a new home at the Nambour Police Station. Along with these activities, the students also participated in a self-defence course with Gerard Kelly from Universal Taekwondo. They learnt about how to defuse a situation to make it less threatening or safer and how to protect themselves against an attacker. Both activities were empowering and enabled the students to gain important life skills.
This term a group of Year 8 students attended an excursion at the Abbey Museum in Caboolture. The day consisted of a range of activities focusing on Medieval Knights and Chivalry. Students enjoyed hands on experiences such as examining medieval armour ,trying their hand at traditional archery and exploring the Museum’s collection of medieval artefacts.
YEAR 8 ABBEY MUSEUM EXCURSION SWPBS Schoolwide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) is a program in place here at Burnside State High School that focuses on improving and supporting positive behaviour. Students receive a “Gotcha” ticket for positive behaviour. We would like to thank our valued SWPBS supporters:

GUIDANCE NEWS Career Planning and Subject Selection for Year 10 Students
The coming term will see our Year 10 students continue their journey across the senior phase of learning as they complete their Student Education and Training (SET) Plans. The SET Plans will involve students actively working with their parents and school staff to further explore realistic career options and possible learning/training pathways.
Additional information around this important process will be provided to students and parents over the coming weeks, with specific activities including:
The opportunity to attend various university and training organisation open days, along with career and tertiary study expos;
Meeting with a number of employers and industry representatives as part of the school’s Beacon activities;
Participating in classroom and online activities exploring personal abilities, interests, career opportunities, and learning/training pathways;
Completing a week long block of work experience; and,
Meeting with the key school staff to help guide SET Plan Development, culminating in Year 11/12 subject selection.
Applications for 2020 University Entrance
Year 12 students intending to apply for university entrance in 2020 will meet with me in Term 3 as the next step in their Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC) application process. Initially though, some important dates to be aware of:
QTAC guides provided to students in July.
QTAC applications will open in Term 3, and in some cases will need to be completed by the end of the Term.
At this stage, I also recommend parents and students become familiar with the QTAC application process through qtac.edu.au. This site is also a great place to confirm dates of university open days and regional expos, including:
Tertiary Studies Expo (20/21 July)
Sunshine Coast Careers Expo (23 July)
As always feel free to contact me to discuss any of the information highlighted above.

Meishu Hitachi: For the past four weeks, Hyori, Hazuki and Karin from our Sister School in Japan have been immersed in classes and courageously
working on their language skills. The month’s exchange is a wonderful program allowing many of our students to engage with native Japanese
speakers and improve our understanding and knowledge of Japanese culture. The girls have been extremely generous with smiles and sharing of cultural practices. Thank you to wonderful host families who have welcomed
these students into their homes.
Rishikul Vidyapeeth: Our Sister School from India visited for ten action
packed days of school activities and excursions to Australia Zoo and Brisbane. They also braved the winter weather and jumped on boards for a
surfing lesson. The Director of the school, Mr Dheeraj Sharma, two teachers and ten students participated in the study tour. This exchange will be
reciprocated in December 2020 with a study tour from Burnside heading to Rishikul in northern India. Thank you host families again!
Goodbye Internationals: Julie, Una, Gianna, Auphelie, Clara, Phoebe, Henrike and Eliza have completed their final week at Burnside High School. We sadly said goodbye to these courageous students with a Goodbye BBQ at Cotton

UTE DAY 2019 On June 7 Burnside State High School hosted its annual Ute Day event. During this event, Year 10 students had the opportunity to speak with over 15 diverse companies including Rosemount Turf, Reilly Electrical, Holcim, Paradise Seaplanes, Linfox, U-Haul, Department of Transport & Main Roads, Shadforth and The Pump House. Whilst rotating through the various companies, students were able to talk to the business representatives about their typical jobs, training requirements and experiences staff had had in their roles. Students could also ask questions at each station to further their knowledge and start planning their careers. This event is invaluable for year 10 students as it gives them exposure to a wide variety of careers that are available to them once they complete school. We would like to thank all businesses involved in the event as we appreciate the time and effort involved and our students benefit immensely from their support.
