Mahaffey rally earnswin in top GNT flight

The District 9 team from Florida captained byJim Mahaffey rallied from 35 IMPs down in thefourth quarter to win the Grand National Teams,Championship Flight 146-144 over the District 16squad led by Malcolm Brachman.

For Mahaffey, of Winter Park, and BarnetShenkin of Boca Raton, the victory was their firstin the event. Teammate Jeff Meckstroth of Tampahas won the GNT six times, while Eric Rodwell ofClearwater Beach and Michael Seamon of MiamiBeach have captured the title five times. GaryCohler of Miami is now a two-time GNT winner.

The runners-up, from Texas, are Brachman,Bart Bramley and Sidney Lazard of Dallas, MikePassell of Plano and Eddie Wold of Houston.

Brachman jumped out to a 55-47 lead after onequarter, but Mahaffey was ahead by 7 IMPs at thebreak. The Texans blasted their opponents 53-11 totake the lead with a quarter to go but could not hold it.

District 6 stampedesto GNT Flight A win

The way Sumner Steinfeldt sees it, baseball greatTed Williams had a lot to do with his District 6 squad’svictory in the Grand National Teams Flight A – a winby nearly 100 IMPs against a District 12 team thatwithdrew after three quarters.

“It was the Ted Williams tee shirts,” saidSteinfeldt, who lived in Boston for many years butnow calls Washington DC home. Steinfeldt has fourTed Williams tee shirts, which he wore four days in arow in the district qualifying tournament. In NewYork, he wore the same four tee shirts in the sameorder during his squad’s run to the championship.

Whether Steinfeldt’s teammates were aware of thetee shirt magic, they were happy winners: team captainMarshall Kuschner, Reston VA; Hal Hindman,Annandale VA, and Mark Chen, Oak Hill VA.

The runners-up, from Michigan, are MarkLeonard, Ypsilanti; Thomas Rozinski, Ann Arbor;Barry Lippitt, Southfield, and Richard Mydloski,Taylor.

Kuschner is a part-time tournament directorwhose wife Candy, is a full-time TD. He andSteinfeldt, a retired web master for the U.S. PostalService, have been playing together for more than 20years.

Hindman, an OB-GYN doctor, and Chen, asoftware developer, have been regular partners forabout seven years. Chen was anxious to mention hiswife, Yin-Ching and their two daughters, Erica andGrace.

The District 6 team started strong, opening a 48-16 lead after one quarter and extending it to 110-55 atthe halfway point. Their opponents withdrew afterthree quarters, trailing 190-93.

Susan Sugarman ofthe New York Citychapter of theAlzheimer’sAssociation, isflanked by ACBLCharity FoundationTreasurer ShirleySeals, right, andFoundationPresident JayneThomas at thepresentation of theFoundation’s$100,000 check tothe associationSaturday night.

If you don’t think Alzheimer’s disease is agrowing problem, consider this statistic: at presentthere are 4.5 million Americans affected by thedisease – not counting the families and care givers ofthose with the devastating illness.

If researchers don’t find a cure by 2050, thenumber of Alzheimer’s cases could grow to 16million.

“As Baby Boomers enter the age of greatestrisk,” says Susan Sugarman of the New York Citychapter of the Alzheimer’s Association, “Alzheimer’sis becoming the leading public health crisis of the21st century.”

Sugarman visited the Summer NABC Saturdaynight to receive a check from the ACBL CharityFoundation for $100,000. The association wasselected by the ACBL Charity Foundation as theCharity of the Year for 2004. Charity FoundationPresident Jayne Thomas and Foundation TreasurerShirley Seals presented the check.

Sugarman, vice president and director ofmarketing and communications for the NYC chapterof the association, said there is a lot of Alzheimer’sresearch going on at present.

“There are many reasons to be hopeful,” she said,

“but we are not there yet.”The association was founded in Chicago in 1980

and now has 81 chapters nationwide. The NYCchapter was among the founding organizations.

Sugarman said that there are more than 200,000people with Alzheimer’s disease in the five boroughsof New York.

Alzheimer’s, she said, does not cause mentalillness. It is a disease of the brain the same way heartdisease is a disease of the heart. Brain cells die andthe first sign is usually a loss of short-term memory.Impairment of judgment comes next, and in advancedstages, people with Alzheimer’s lose the ability to dotasks – such as balancing a checkbook – that wereformerly routine.

The cost to American business in terms of lostearnings and work time and care for those whocontract the disease, Sugarman said, is in the billionsof dollars. Far from being a disease confined to theelderly, Sugarman said, Alzheimer’s can affect peoplein their 40s and 50s.

The local chapters of the Alzheimer’sAssociation provide support for education, trainingand support to the families of those with the disease, including a 24-hour hotline.

‘It’s so much funI had to come back’

Sandy Schlyer of Westlake CA, one of theNewcomer players, is attending her third NABChere. “It’s so much fun that you have to keepcoming back.”

Her partner, Teryl Burke of Thousand OaksCA, believed her and flew cross-country to play inher first NABC. “I’m trying to stay young. My 85-year-old mother told me to play bridge and docrossword puzzles if I wanted to stay young. So Ihave to play a lot of bridge because I don’t docrossword puzzles.”

They’re doing a lot more besides winningmasterpoints here. They have already seen“Hairspray” and they’re going to see “The Boyfrom Oz.” They took the Radio City Music Tour, and today they’re going to Yankee Stadium to seethe Yankees play. Teryl especially enjoyed theRockettes. She wanted to be a Rockette in heryounger years, “but my legs weren’t long enough.”

They’re having success at the table as well. OnFriday they had a first and a second.

Teryl has been playing cards all her life –pinochle, poker, hearts and cribbage) – but shedidn’t try bridge until she saw an ad for bridgelessons. She took some lessons from Jim Lynch, and now bridge is her only card game.

SerendipityIt’s amazing how things work out sometimes.

Alan Kleist, East, lost his concentration for amoment and passed a forcing bid at the six-level.But the result was a near top and enoughmatchpoints to just barely qualify for the secondday of the Life Master Pairs with partner NobleShore. They were playing against Kit Woolsey andFred Stewart.

director was called, and he ruled that the Passstood. So Kleist was sure he had blown the slamand the qualifying.

And then he saw the dummy after Stewart led atrump. Seven spades to the king-queen – hecouldn’t believe his eyes. Don’t forget – his partnerhad never bid spades showing spades.

He won his trump ace, cashed his ♣A, pitchinga heart, and ruffed a club. He drew the rest of thetrumps, then led to the ♥A and ♥K and ruffed aheart. That set up the suit, so he crossed to the ♦Aand pitched his losers on hearts to wind up with all13 tricks.

Lots of pairs got to slam, but they played inhearts, where they had to lose a trump. It also madea difference that the contract was played from thesingleton side. If Woolsey, North, had been on lead,no doubt he would have started with a diamond, and then it would be extremely unlikely that Shorecould take all 13 tricks.

Shocked and amazedPaul Soloway, ACBL’s top masterpoint holder,

many-time North American and world champion, isnot easily impressed. During the evening session ofthe Life Master Open Pairs, one of his opponentsgave Soloway something to talk about.

Here’s what happened.Soloway, East, was looking at♠A K 7 4 3 2 ♥3 ♦J 8 4 2 ♣K J 8 7 5

and heard his left-hand opponent open 1♥ asdealer.

Soloway’s partner passed and his RHO bid 1♠.Soloway bid a natural 2♠, LHO and Soloway’spartner passed and RHO, the 1♠ bidder, ended theauction with a bid of 3NT.

Intent on not giving up a trick by leading hisspade suit, Soloway started with a low diamond.Dummy hit with

♠J 5 ♥K Q 10 7 6 4 ♦A 6 ♣Q 10 9.Declarer won the ♦A in dummy as West

signaled with the 9. Declarer then played a club tohis king. Soloway took the ♣A and, still trying toavoid giving up a spade trick, continued with adiamond.

At that point, recalled Soloway, his opponent“flopped it (his hand) on the table, claiming 12tricks.” When Soloway saw declarer’s hand, hecould only look on in admiration. The full deal:

Soloway was impressed with North’s 1♠ bidon three to the 10 – but he liked his opponent’s bold3NT bid even more, especially after Solowayshowed a long spade suit.

“It was like re-raising in poker with nothing,”said Soloway. “He made a terrific bid of 1♠ – and his3NT bid was out of this world. He earned his top.”

New Life MastersAnne Derkat of Edmonton AB earned her gold

card playing with her husband, Floyd, in the SeniorPairs Saturday. It was especially enjoyable for theDerkats, who are on their honeymoon. They weremarried about a month ago.

Also joining the ranks of Life Masters wasJason Bribitzer-Stull, who earned his gold card inthe Stratiflighted Pairs, Flight A/X, playing withMatthew Bribitzer-Stull. Both are fromMinneapolis.

Congratulations arealso in order for DavidAmsterdam of Wayne PA.He became a Life Masterby winning the B/C/DOpen Pairs.

A great concert onfor tonight

Be sure to be in the Trianon Ballroom at 11:15this evening. Two superb pianists, David Levy ofCannes, France, and Julian Evans of Cologne,Germany, will offer a piano concert to die for. Thefeature arrangements will be Gershwin’s“Rhapsody in Blue” and Tchaikovsky’s“Nutcracker Suite.”

They usually give solo concerts, but they haveappeared together in many concerts all overEurope. They have received glowing reviews.Their next European concert will be in Cannes,France, next month.

They’ve known each other since they were 15when both were students at Manchester, where oneof Great Britian’s best music colleges is located. They have found some places to practice togethersince arriving in New York. Special pianos havebeen rented for their concert tonight.

Evans is not a bridge player, but Levy loves thegame. As a matter of fact, he’s going to play in theSpingold tomorrow. He’ll be playing with PaulHackett, John Armstrong and Connie Goldberg.

District 21 tops inFlight B of GNT

The District 21 team that won the Flight BGrand National Teams championship had to do alot of regrouping along the way. Their originalcaptain couldn’t make it – he’s still in Europe. Butthe new captain, Jim Leuker of San Francisco, found the players he needed for a winningcombination. Playing with him were Bruce Tuttleand Shelley Lapkoff, Berkeley CA; SathyaBettadapura of Campbell CA and Tanakorn “Big”Lavanakul of Dublin CA.

They triumphed over the District 14 teamwhich included Jonathan Cohen of Prior Lake MN,Charles Nauen of St. Paul MN, Mark Krusemeyerof Northfield MN and Patti Stuhlman ofMinneapolis.

Leuker, Tuttle and Bettadapura were originalmembers of the team. Leuker, a retired computerconsultant, knew that Lapkoff and Lavanakul hadhad some experience playing with other membersof the team, so he asked them to join.

Why is Lavanakul called Big? It turns out thathe is the only boy in a family with six sisters, so hewas always the big brother. He’s a softwareengineer, as is Bettadapura. Tuttle is a retiredproject planner for Charles Schwab. Lapkoff is ademographer.

Snack bar Alert! The expansive snack bar on the third

floor of the Hilton will operate from 8:30a.m. to 3 p.m. daily. After 3 p.m., there willbe a beverage station set up outside theMarketplace Restaurant on the first floor ofthe hotel. So stop by for a beverage beforeyou start the evening session.

Caddies will be available during thegames to get drinks for players.
